  • I'm comparing adoption in Sims 1 vs. Sims 2 vs. Sims 3 vs. Sims 4. How does the adoption process work in each game, how does each one differ, and which one is the best (in my opinion)? The answer might surprise you!

In the Sims 1, adoption was simple - but also harder. The player could not initiate the process. Instead, you had to wait until the adoption agency randomly called your Sim on the phone and offered. And even then, you could only adopt babies.
In The Sims 2, you could now call up adoption services from the phone and order your very own baby, toddler, or child. You could choose age only - nothing else (even gender) was within the player's control. And there were limitations. You had to have a certain amount of Simoleons and if you had children taken away before, you couldn't adopt again.
In The Sims 3, you had even more control. Now you could choose the age AND gender of your adopted child. Plus, the financial requirement was gone and you could even name your new family member! The social worker also came immediately instead of making you wait a day like in Sims 2.
In The Sims 4, adoption was now costly - $1,000 for a baby, toddler, or child. You can initiate adoption on the computer, and your Sim would go pick up their new child immediately. Unfortunately, there are no social worker NPCs in TS4, which I found a little disappointing.

I'd say Sims 2 is the most realistic. The whole aspect of having enough money to properly bring a new child in, waiting for the next day, not being able to adopt anymore after getting children taken away, they getting back to the "orphanage", and so on.

Well, I know that if you adopt a child, you cn legally change their name. I know of adopted children that usually come from a bad place and want a "fresh start" so their adoptive parents let them pick a new name. No one forces them to change their name, but a lot of them do get their names changed when they're adopted.
In the Sims 3 you have the ability to create that type of story line, in which the child wants to change their name, and then picks a fun name or something like that haha

Very true, but it does happen. One of my best friends was adopted at 9 and her mom changed her name. I had made a wicked witch of the west once and saved her to the bin and forgot she was there. A few months later I did an adoption and got a green baby. I mean, even if I could, I would feel bad taking away a child's name and identity from them, especially in a stressful situtation. Sims 2 is definitely the best version for me here. I actually really don’t like that you can change the name of a child-aged Sim in TS3 (and 4). IRL I don’t think you would/should change a child’s name unless they are too young to remember. I also don’t like that children who are taken away just disappear and don’t go into the adoption pool in TS3.
TS4 is the worst though - I only found out a few months ago about the child just ‘poofing’ away through watching a GrayStillPlays video and I was appalled enough just by that. I had no idea they hadn’t programmed in a social worker (but really, I should have expected it). That game is so bad.

In The Sims 1, homosexual couples would get the adoption prompt instead of the "Should we have a baby?" prompt that heterosexual couples get when engaging in romantic social activities (read: steaming hot kissing).

I'm skeptical about The Sims 3 because sadly, without AwesomeMod, the kid will end up having a pudding face 99% of the time (which means all adopted kids have exactly the same face).
The Sims 2 has the best system imo. Adoption doesn't cost anything, but you need to have some financial stability to be able to adopt. And re-adopting is super cool. Lack of gender choice might be a bummer, but you can always save right before the social worker comes and repeat the adoption to get different results (like with labor). Plus, I am IN LOVE with the fact that adopted babies are bred from existing townies, so babies always turn out to be the most unique looking, with mixed up appearances instead of just basic templates :D

    "There's no social worker npc."
    There's nearly no npcs period.
Also, the immediate adoption just goes to show that The Sims 4 lacks any and all consequences.
I do like that kids went back into the adoption pool of The Sims 2. It allowed for fuller story telling. I remember I had a kid taken away from one sim and had her sister adopt the baby - sort of like trying to keep the child with some family member before adopting them out to someone else.

I generally prefer TS2 because I like the lack of choice - they're adopting a child, not shopping for one. I feel like the lack of control respects the fact the child is a sim person in their own right. You know, as far as you can respect a fictional child.

The Sims 2's adoption system is my favourite of the bunch, although it's not perfect. I actually like having to wait a day for the social worker to come. I know people irl that have adopted (or tried to, at least), and it can be a very lengthy process (at least where I live). I imagine that day you have to wait is used to do background checks on the parents, do all the paperwork, etc. It's annoying, yes, but so is the real thing, lol. That's why I also like the money requirement and that they won't let sims who have had their children taken away adopt. I take it as the sim social services making sure they are giving the child to suitable parents.
Something I really like about the sims 4's system is that you can choose from a "pool" of available children, which I find very realistic. Orphanages and such only have so many children, after all, so that's kinda realistic. I *really* dislike that you have to pay, though. That makes it seem you're buying the child, which sounds just awful.
One thing I'm sad none of the games have is the option to adopt more than one child at once. I know people who, for example, adopted siblings so as not to separate them. That option would be nice on the sims 2, since children that have been taken away go to the "adoption bin". Though I suppose you can just adopt them one at the time.

I think I prefer not being able to name adopted toddlers/children since it would feel cruel to 'force' them to change their name at that age!
Also like some other people mentioned, I love that babies are generated from the DNA of townies in the neighborhood in the Sims 2!! It makes it really fun to adopt lots of babies and find out who they end up looking like.....

Even though it’s a mod I believe MCCC allows for neglected kids to not disappear into the grey area. You know where cars, improved babies, classic NPC and gameplay exists lol. I do hope that they expand on adoption for TS5. I’d love for it to be a little bit harder to adopt. Like sims who have the hates children trait shouldn’t be allowed to adopt. I wish we had orphanages where our sims could go and bond with potential children instead of picking them out of a catalog like they are objects. Just a little more realism and challenge.

I actually think it is more realistic to not be able to change the first name, other than a baby, because said child would already be familiar with their name. Also, I do think having 3k funds is definitely reasonable.
What I would love to see in the future, an application process, perhaps similar to the Head Master scenario in Sims 2.
I did not know about Sims 3 having a grace period to allow another adoption, I just assumed it was like Sims 2, and since I never had my Sims removed for neglect, I actually did not know that. Thank you!

I think the first time I adopted in The Sims 2 it was with the Oldies. I gave them two children one day after the next and then started adopting babies so that one they died, the oldest two could presumably take care of their younger siblings. I think I adopted five children for them, so Mary Sue ended up with a lot of siblings.

Back, before I installed MC Command Center, I played a few 4 toddler challenges. The one where you set up the home and don't intervene, leaving the sims to raise the toddlers entirely on their own. In one household, an angelic toddler's hunger got too low and was taken away. That toddler didn't appear anywhere else and in the family tree, remained a toddler even after the other 3 toddlers aged up to child and teen. Looks like when children get taken, they're wiped from the game entirely.

I don't really mind not being able to name the adopted child in Sims 2, because in real life if I were an adoptive parent I wouldn't want to change say, my new 7 year old's name lol unless they want to pick something. If they're a baby they aren't conscious enough to know so in that case it would be different, and that's exactly what the Sims 2 mirrors, which I like.

I'm so different in that I'd like harder requirements to adopt a child, maybe 5K in your funds and working beds for the children that they could send a social worker to check out the next day and if you have like really bad furniture and all the cheap appliances with half painted rooms, they could reject your application. That'd be so much cooler than in sims 4 where everything is so easy there is no incentive to do anything.

I had it happen two times that whisked away children in the Sims 4 were automatically adopted into townie households, buuuut watching your video I guess that MC Command Centre might've made that happen.
The first child got whisked away because it got stuck in some animation randomly and thus couldn't eat and when I noticed it, it was too late.
The other child was adopted automatically because their NPC parent died, so the household had no adult or teen anymore who couldtake care of them.
