I've been such a metalhead for the last few years, I've barely listened to anything else...coming back to this right now brings out some emotions. I still remember the night I discovered this band and listened to several songs from Act IV, including this one. I wish I could relive that feeling.
This is one of those songs that is so good.. that when you're alone and have a few minutes to completely zone out..you tear up in between waves of goosebumps, as the hair on your arms stand up..
Man Casey, you and your team are so musically genius. All the way from Act 1 to today. Im so thankful to hear and see your work!! The man who sings gold every track.
+Epps or Yes. It has been a month so I presume you are already heavily addicted. lol My only concern when I found this band 6 months ago, was: will I ever find another band that can top this? Or is this as good as it gets?! Kind of a depressing thought, but I think I am okay with this situation so long as they keep it up for another 5-10 years.
I dont know where was I? Why I did not discover this band before? This Band deserves more views, subscriptions and publicity. Please share their music as much as you can.
I find it kinda sad that bands have a hard time making befitting music videos for their concept albums. Because they need music videos for distribution but the songs are mostly supposed to play off the imagination. As soon as Act 6 comes out I DEMAND A PLAY, CASEY.
TTALeapMonster COME ON MAN I'm already working on a musical/rock opera project about another band's album, I don't need another project to be consuming my life. In short, you have me extremely tempted to begin writing such a play/musical.
The Acts are truly the gift that keeps on giving. The deeper you dig the more there is to find. The music and lyrics are unbelievably well written. The best set of concept albums I have ever found and it is not a close contest
I'm digging this video. I'm so glad that it does have some strong similarities to the actual concept of the Acts. I just can't wait for someone with a lot of money and talent in the film industry to realize that Casey has a good two to four movies on his hands.
They'll just do like they did with Coheed and Cambria. Mark Wahlberg bought the rights to the movies and never did anything with them :-/ I have little hope sadly
Frankly, I think it's fine as a musical piece instead of a hollywood production. It's made into a unique story on its presentation and execution alone. Besides, if it makes it to the silver screen there won't be a faithful portrayal to the original work. It always happens. For example, when the Hunter meets the poison woman, I imagined her giving him a poisoned drink but stops him from taking a drink as he brings the cup up to his mouth. She realizes he is living in anguish and gives him poison for him to take at his choosing instead of outright killing him like she did with other men. The director of The Dear Hunter: The Movie will interpret that part of the story some other way than how I did.
I honestly can't get over just how insanely good TDH is, and how long it took me to actually pick up their stuff. Seen 'em since they were first touring with Coheed and immediately went "These guys are pretty good," and now I probably know every one of their songs front to back just like Coheed, lol.
I know how you feel. The first few songs i heard, i was like ehhh, not really my thing. But once i sat and listened to act 1-3 i was hooked. The first time i saw them live it was mind blowing. Once the bar was closing down, the owner let them play an accoustic set for the 15-20 people that stayed around.
Waves The Dear Hunter I thought that I knew love But it was just a wave crashing over us And in the breaths between the ones we meant to breathe I had my head under my feet You knew the way things were You knew the way they would be We knew exactly how it'd end Strays on a stale sea Oh anchor the engine to a canyon far beneath Water rushed up from the boards below So I started slicking my hair with the kerosene You knew the way things were You knew the way they would be We knew exactly how it'd end And I'm preparing for a burial at sea But I can see the lighthouse Yet I'm praying that these waters don't take me 'Cause I can see the lighthouse I was screaming that the ship was sinking But you were telling me to just keep drinking Corded in the parts again Arms and legs at the bottom of the ocean And the thing that made it so much harder Was the fact that you were someone's daughter I knew the way things were I knew the way they would be I knew exactly how it'd end And I can see the lighthouse And I'm preparing for a burial in sea But I can see the lighthouse Yet I'm praying that these waters don't take me 'Cause I can see the lighthouse Yeah I can see the lighthouse I thought that I knew love But it was just a wave crashing over us
You're music carries an authority over story telling. In three minutes you bring to life such a strong emotion, but I suppose its more like you've recreated it, as is the case with honest songwriting, and you've earned my respect.
It's so amazing to see you guys grow over yourselves again, and again, and again. I do have my own recording of this song that is now a little over year old, did it with my phone during a private aftershow that I was not supposed to be at. Doing it felt like cheating so much that I've never ever let anyone listen to it. I only listened to it a couple dozens of times myself, pulling it out during those nostalgic and harsh moments. Somehow this song became an anthem of this last year for me and I am very grateful that there are such humble, friendly and warm people that make this life-changing art. The album is nothing what I excepted, but is so much more. It's pure progress, pure growth, pure evolution. All the reprises make me shed a tear, taking me years back. It already started growing on me so fast, that I am scared a little. Please, keep doing this no matter what. Please.
Been waiting 6 years for this. Did not disappoint, this work of art is by the far best in the whole series. But I love them all, not to mention the other works.
The intro is so similar to intro to "The Carnival of the Animals: XIII. The Swan." I was listening to it to help me concentrate on a few big work projects and it blew my mind. Love it!

Not the biggest fan of the video but the song is phenomenal! It's songs like this that make me remember why I fell in love with you guys in the first place.
When ur suffering from a severe case of ongoing broken heartedness, that line can really, really hit home... I cant play this song at open mic with my friends without thinking of my ex fiance, its an instant night ruiner lol...
A pain that recedes with time, until all the bitterness is removed from your memory, and the tears of regret and sorrow become tears of reminescence and joy. I speak from personal experience. Keep pushing through.
+Thomas Sears Ummm... and by just bought this album I meant just bought all of their albums :). MUST support fabulous bands like this. If you can afford to... BUY IT!
I love the bands riffs and rhythms... they slide perfectly into each symphonic section. Loving how they just keep pushing their boundaries while holding on to their concept. Feels just like it should... Another act in the epic saga!
Wow! I keep getting impressed over and over again with TDH. What an amazing song! What an amazing band! Casey, I have to thank you for your music. Greetings from Brazil.
unfortunately no, not really. i love their songwriting but it's not and will never be for everyone. they've always had quite a bit of hype throughout their career since no one was doing anything remotely as ambitious as this (or The Color Spectrum, for that matter), and they can pack 500-cap rooms anywhere in the US, so that's already very successful in my books, but you'd be hard pressed to find even a handful of rock operas from the 2000s that actually blew up on the mainstream (My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade comes to mind). bands like TDH, Coheed, BTBAM, Thrice and Alesana just end up garnering very faithful but niche followings from the prog/alternative/indie rock camps. then there's the fact that it's not just one or two concept albums -- the band itself revolves around this six-part, six-hour, ten-year body of work that's not even finished yet. it's a huge commitment required from new listeners, moreso from those already used to the modern, singles-driven, fast-food-like industry. that's not to say TDH don't have a very refined pop sensibility and some massive bangers that can stand on their own, but everything they do has this tone, sophistication and production that all kinda push them away from Top 40 radio or tiktok virals (lol idk) that said --if we're talking TDH's non-conceptual adventures, i've seen "Whisper" randomly included on a shit ton of popular spotify playlists recently. that song in particular covers several bases when it comes to the average listener's preferences and is most likely their most famous song outside of the core fanbase. i do think Casey still has it in him to write an absolute unit of a song and make it as accessible as possible. Migrant was a rollercoaster of emotions, hooks and general awesomeness. a more straightforward version of it (i.e. less strings/horns/baroque choirs) could crossover to several huge audiences.
Im sorry guys. I saw The Dear Hunter open for Coheed and Cambria years ago and thought nothing of it. You guys have matured in to something unreal. Im sorry it took so long, but I get it now. Im here to stay.
You guys are amazing. I really hope you actually do a project with Tommy Rodgers. Between the buried and me and dear hunter tour together. That explosion of emotion would be just too much to handle.
+David Marsh They toured with Haken not that long ago, It was one of the most beautiful gigs I've ever been to. The Dear Hunter brought me to tears at a show a few days ago, I honestly think BTBAM with The Dear Hunter would make me a blubbering mess.
I absolutely love the 'Act' series. I was incredibly excited when Act IV finally came out and this is one of my favorites from that album. Can't wait to continue the story in V! Thanks for the music, guys.

only really just got into TDH, which is nuts but am absolutely loving them. Fantastic songwriting, incredible voice, wonderful arrangements, eclectic styling, serious heart. What's not to love! This is a standout track

i recently discovered the deer hunter after i was watching a neal morse video i saw them in the suggested videos section so i clicked and I am utterly impressed act 1-5 of what ever the album is called is awesome I love prog rock so they are right up my alley what a gem XD
even though I was really really young when this excellent band made these awesome albums, sometimes I feel it was my fault not discovering this band when they were on their early days of starting the band, let's say I was maybe hmm.. well when they started I think it was 2006, not too sure I'm not done with my researches, but they probably started before I was even being made, or at least before I was born, still upset I'm young but I will always support this band till I'm old enough to support them with all what I have. . Edit: I LOCE YOU THE DEAR HUNTER I LOVE YOU THE DEAR HUNTER I LOVR YOU YHE DESR HUNTER
All these years later, this is still one of the best songs I have ever heard...
I was obsessed with it when I was in high school. All these years later, it's still unbelievable.
Its a crime that more people dont know every single Dear Hunter album front to back.
I got to see them live in Seattle.
They were amazing
One of the greatest bands I've come across. Just.. daaang
then you also need to go check out The receiving end of sirens as well!
Okay, I'll have to keep that in mind

I'm so sad that after 4 years, this video still has less than half a million views. :(
I'm so disappointed. I thought for sure they would blow up. Any idea if they still make music?
@Sebastian Ramirez ah, really? I'll check it out, thanks :)
Just over half a million now.
I find it kinda sad that bands have a hard time making befitting music videos for their concept albums. Because they need music videos for distribution but the songs are mostly supposed to play off the imagination. As soon as Act 6 comes out I DEMAND A PLAY, CASEY.

The short film (music video) for Gloria is pretty much a perfect visual for the Acts.
I also, would like a play. plsntycasey.
Agreed. It's an awesome music video, don't get me wrong. But it's completely inappropriate for the story of the Acts.
The Acts are truly the gift that keeps on giving. The deeper you dig the more there is to find. The music and lyrics are unbelievably well written. The best set of concept albums I have ever found and it is not a close contest
UA-cam needs a love button. For real.
Why can't these guys be more mainstream...its imperative that they are.. the world actually needs this.
Fantastic!

Honestly, if Narnia made it to franchise, I don't see why The Lake and the River shouldn't be made into -at least- 3 feature films.
They'll just do like they did with Coheed and Cambria. Mark Wahlberg bought the rights to the movies and never did anything with them :-/ I have little hope sadly

Waves
The Dear Hunter
I thought that I knew love
But it was just a wave crashing over us
And in the breaths between the ones we meant to breathe
I had my head under my feet
You knew the way things were
You knew the way they would be
We knew exactly how it'd end
Strays on a stale sea
Oh anchor the engine to a canyon far beneath
Water rushed up from the boards below
So I started slicking my hair with the kerosene
You knew the way things were
You knew the way they would be
We knew exactly how it'd end
And I'm preparing for a burial at sea
But I can see the lighthouse
Yet I'm praying that these waters don't take me
'Cause I can see the lighthouse
I was screaming that the ship was sinking
But you were telling me to just keep drinking
Corded in the parts again
Arms and legs at the bottom of the ocean
And the thing that made it so much harder
Was the fact that you were someone's daughter
I knew the way things were
I knew the way they would be
I knew exactly how it'd end
And I can see the lighthouse
And I'm preparing for a burial in sea
But I can see the lighthouse
Yet I'm praying that these waters don't take me
'Cause I can see the lighthouse
Yeah I can see the lighthouse
I thought that I knew love
But it was just a wave crashing over us
I feel pity for the replay button

And I'm preparing for a burial at sea
But I can see the lighthouse
Yet I'm praying that these waters don't take me
'Cause I can see the lighthouse
I was screaming that the ship was sinking
But you were telling me to just keep drinking
Corded in the parts again
Arms and legs at the bottom of the ocean
And the thing that made it so much harder
Was the fact that you were someone's daughter
I knew the way things were
I knew the way they would be
I knew exactly how it'd end
And I can see the lighthouse
And I'm preparing for a burial in sea
But I can see the lighthouse
Yet I'm praying that these waters don't take me
'Cause I can see the lighthouse
Yeah I can see the lighthouse
I thought that I knew love
But it was just a wave crashing over us
Heard this live and they play so damn good.
i recently discovered the deer hunter after i was watching a neal morse video i saw them in the suggested videos section so i clicked and I am utterly impressed act 1-5 of what ever the album is called is awesome I love prog rock so they are right up my alley what a gem XD
Heard about you guys on The Attack! Awesome group.
even though I was really really young when this excellent band made these awesome albums, sometimes I feel it was my fault not discovering this band when they were on their early days of starting the band, let's say I was maybe hmm.. well when they started I think it was 2006, not too sure I'm not done with my researches, but they probably started before I was even being made, or at least before I was born, still upset I'm young but I will always support this band till I'm old enough to support them with all what I have.
.
