Julian's vocal is not the best and perfect in any way, but its ability to envoke nostalgia and emotions is undeniable, especially combined with his songwriting skill.

"One Way Trigger" is easily Julian's most insane vocal work imo.
The entire album, "Comedown Machine", which is the painfully underrated predecessor to "The New Abnormal", is chock-full of Julian's falsetto.
Would love to see it on this channel someday.

Julian takes a lot of inspiration from 20s-60s crooners and mixes it with a more modern pop rock type of style. Even 80s new wave bands used baritones that reminded you of golden age crooners. But a lot more edgy

Oh man I KNEW there was a reason I fell in love with Julian's vocal performance, and a huge thank you Chris for so comprehensively covering all the nuances he displays. The New Abnormal is like an antithesis to over-produced albums; it's as you said - feels sparse yet so full in its sound (no doubt thanks to the great mixing) and Julian's vocals are just so damn interesting and captivating. Julian's vocals and your videos have given me a greater appreciation of talented vocalists and just how much detail there is in a good vocalist's performance.

Great work btw, I'm addicted to your videos, such knowledge & passion.

I think it’s lovely that a vocal coach is taking a deep drive into Julian’s voice. Too quickly people dismiss his voice as a one trick pony with the mic doing his work. I think he has the most distinctive voice of the last 2 decades, the strokes, solo and collaborating with the biggest to provide vocals. His presence brings a grandeur and now timeless quality. Like Scott Walker or Jaques Burel his growth as a vocalist continues beyond the first impressions .

A good friend of mine showed me this song last week & I have to say is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, the song is a masterpiece from start to finish but the emotion Julian evokes with tone changes throughout his vocals is outstanding. My fav parts are “and I got it all, I got it all, I will not show my teeth too quick , I needed you there/ but I didn’t know x2” And the build up of the last verse to end with that momentum gets me everytime . AMAZING.

One of my favourite vocal transformations is Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys :) not sure how famous they are in the US but have been huge here in the UK since the mid 2000s. The difference between their last 2 albums, 'AM' and 'Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino' and their earlier work is incredible. It's particularly interesting for me, being nerdy about this stuff and now living in their hometown of Sheffield. Alex used to sing in a really distinctive Sheffield (Yorkshire) accent, and it's only detectable on certain vowels now, but somehow his voice is still so distinctly *him*. I can definitely hear the influence of Julian Casablancas on AT's voice. It's sssssssso interesting to watch singers polish up their technique! I worry sometimes as I'm only just taking my singing development "seriously" at 29, but some of these guys are singing better than ever in their 30s and 40s.

The song itself os a masterpiece and worthy of a Grammy. We hear so many songs about growing up poor with nothing but still having the love of your father. Julian's song is about growing up with everything and wanting the love of your rich father and all he does is throw money at you. Now hes gone and you have no good memories of him, just him equating money with affection but you have hope for your future generations that you wont do the same to them.

He put emotion and intimacy on this last "roar" like if his voice brakes in a silent crying ... like swallowing the last note into some little emotional brake down... that part make some fans brake to cry in the live shows when they play this song ... BTW Julian have the awful habit to forget and change the lyrics alive ... jajajaj you need this band playing alive

i love your analysis of julian's voice! this definitely changes how i hear their music and appreciate it even more than i already do
is there any chance you'd analyze a song from Phoenix? i'm genuinely curious to know about Thomas Mars' voice because it doesn't *seem* remarkable (in fact it may be heard as overly nasally?) and yet they remain one of my favorite bands! i also try to sing along and i'm like, how does he effortlessly get some of those notes? hahaha
of course there's their most famous song 1901 but i'm extremely curious about their song Entertainment!
thanks for reading! excited to see more videos from you :D

Analyze the Strokes' At The Door - I think this is one of Julian's best vocal performances
