Their sound is evocative of that hazy, "I'm buzzed and all-is-right-with-the-world" euphoria one experiences just before intoxication. Thanks for doing The Strokes, Beth!
At 3:50 you began to describe a perfect example/understanding of what I’ve never been able to put into exact words, but believe is the reason many others including myself love the strokes. They have this rock/punk raspy edge that makes you want to break free, in a way rebel. But at the same time the smoothy jazz/upbeat music keeps you safe and allows you to feel comfortable enough to dance freely and express yourself with joy.
I love both versions of Julian, but I agree. His vocal skills have really improved over the years. His insane falsetto is something I never thought I would hear when I was listening to The Strokes in 2001. They have been one of my favorite bands since the moment I first heard them, and while I love the calculated messiness of early strokes, I do love the more modern polished sound they have now.
If I'm not mistaken, this video was actually them performing live because they didn't want to shoot a traditional music video. Hence why you can hear Julian's random vocalizations which are not on the album track

Now whats really gonna bake your noodle as that this isnt the version on the album. What you are hearing is what they were playing when they shot the video!
Boy this is an interesting mix that I can't place my finger on. It is kind of punkish reminding me in part of the Suburbs with a Stray Cats twist but even that doesn't come close. This one has me scratching my head.
Love their music. Thank you so much for reacting. Hope you could also react to WALANG HANGGAN (Everlasting) by ALAMAT (P-POP group). Would love to hear your opinion on their vocals.
why do I feel you know I'm watching certain videos! 😅 the things you pic up are awesome... plus the research is great! super video! it would be cool if you reacted to Future Islands Performs "Seasons (Waiting On You)" | Letterman (this singer is quite something!)
This is a live video. Not sure how people don't notice but I get it. Julian and the band didn't want a normal video lip singing to the music. Everything you hear is one live take.
Definitely give them a listen. Their debut that this song is on is 37 minutes of aural bliss. Their discography is a little inconsistent but several albums are great and every project has something great on it. Also check out Albert Hammond Jr's solo records. They are really good and his output is probably more consistent than the Strokes.
You must be joking. 2006 was the reason he quit drinking. He could barely hit any high notes in 2006. He took a few years off, sobered up, learned to sing properly and came back better then ever.
@@mikecondy6010 Mf, he quit drinking in 2006 because he had committed 2 felonies, at least actually pay attention. And he never had songs with a lot of high notes until the 2005 album which he never hit those super high notes on first impression once in his early career. Stfu
G'day Beth, It would be Awesome for you to check out James Reyne & Guy McDonough of Australian Crawl, along with Hoodoo Gurus they are one of Australia's Awesome Surf Rock Pub Bands, quite a lot of their Lyrics are so hard to get right they would be frontrunners for Most Mondegreens with songs like Errol (about Errol Flynn), Things Don't Seem, Beautiful People... Any one feel free to add more Aussie Crawl Faves 🙃👎
I don’t think Julian casablancas is classically trained in music theory. He said he learned everything about songwriting from listening to a Doors tape cassette. But, he’s the sole songwriter for all the songs on The Strokes first 2 albums- words and music. So he’s a huge musical talent. Great review! Thanks!
@@finnthekreatormusic5397 Sh*t band inspires other sh*tty players to form bands. Um, yay?! Listen, I know I'm in the minority, but this derivative, basic, simplistic music getting popular just makes it more difficult for more complex, talented bands to get heard.

Pretty cool description. Throwing the mic stand and sitting down is straight up drunk fuck it behavior.
Julian is a stone cold musical prodigy. He wrote everything on the first two albums. He doesn't miss.
First three albums.
The Strokes stole my heart in 2001 and never gave it back. I don't even mind 😄
Don’t be lame
Same lol
The Strokes ooze style and rhythm. It's why they are one of my favorite bands of all time.
I agree!

Ooh, I would love to see you react to one of their newer songs to compare and contrast the differences between 20+ years of their music.
i think a song like selfless would be perfect for this!
Good ole' drunk Julian, loved him but don't miss him. Sober Julian still exceeds talent.

They did their part. They kept rock n roll alive. A great bar band.
Man… what I’d give to go back and hear this one for the first time again.
I ALWAYS get such a kick out of your genuine enthusiasm. And oh yeah- you're gorgeous too

Good song. So many to choose from for Julian Casablancas. I also recommend some Josh Homme.
Hey, Beth!! You're a genius!!! It's impressive how surprising your analysis is. Always. Tks for this one.
first time to see this video of them. he is 100 percent doing Jim Morrison and the Doors here i have no doubt
I worked in a music shop back when this came out. Sept 11 resulted in the album being pulled and re released with New York City cops removed.
he is also a full time smoker that's why probably his voice was like that
Oh Beth! Now you’ve done it. Love this band!!!!!!
beth: analyzing
Julian: Im just drunk bro
btw loved the video and ofc I love the strokes
Beth thank you very much You taught me something I didn't know that this gentleman and Frank Sinatra did the same thing by being just a little behind the beat to make get even more cool more smooth and more effective Thank you I learned something Today! Eric Sahagun
I love the strokes, ty for the reaction
Love this take on this song. I was literally obsessed with the Strokes when I was about 17/18 . I tried to dress like Casablancas
Me encanta The strokes y tus reacciones también! Buen videoo❤️
I miss singing this at karaoke 20 years ago
Some of the phrasing in the singing and the music reminds me of Jim Morrison and the Doors...
He is a big Doors fan
Now whats really gonna bake your noodle as that this isnt the version on the album. What you are hearing is what they were playing when they shot the video!
He was just drunk in that song lol, actually they were all drunk 😂😂😂

I would love a reaction to the latest songs, like the adults are talking and ode to the mets
I’d love to see a reaction to Looks like Rain, The Grateful Dead. Great video, as always!
I loved this episode!
oh it would be really cool that you react to anything on their latest album they’ve changed a lot
you should check out and react to their album the new abnormal
If you want a really fun and silly Julian Casablancas song that shows that more cleaner voice and his huge range look up Lonely Island - Boombox.
Boombox is GREAT. Has me rolling every time.

Holy shit. Yes! I've heard people say that Letterman was laughing at them. No way, he fucking LOVED it.
Yes they are rather nostalgic to the mid 70's new wave. Do one of Black Honey or The Strutz.
Awesome!

Albert Hammond is the daughter? Too cute lol
I like it even though I have not heard them before, thank you Beth

I believe Julian used to plug his mic into an amplifier with effects.Which gave it that distorted sound.
I feel like every member of The Strokes would have sold acid in college if they weren’t in a band.

Sounds like a high school group of friends with "musicians" who are just now learning chords and a singer who's testing out his best nasal. Brutal.
