  • A true hero of motorsport, Sir Stirling Moss will be remembered beyond his years. With style, swagger and the driving skills to back that up, Stirling had a long relationship with Goodwood Motor Circuit, the very place where his motorsport career began. A true gentleman racer, Stirling Moss is cited by many of motorsport’s greatest drivers as the ultimate in the sport. Truly, the best never to win an #F1 championship title. In this stirring tribute at Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard we have a rendition of Going Home by Dire Straits’ own Mark Knopfler and some emotive words from the Duke of Richmond himself.

Imagine that career-ending crash not occurring. Imagine Moss mixing it with Clark, Hill, Stewart, et al through the sixties.
But then, he might not have made it into a ripe old age...

@@GBURGE55 We (or me, anyway!) tend to think of Moss as being older than he really was. The early start to his career and that receding hairline makes it easy to forget that he was younger than Graham Hill. Moss always said that he would have just carried on racing until he was uncompetitive. Just imagine how that would have affected F1 in the sixties...

In my mind’s eye I still can see Stirling and Dan Gurney in nearly identical Lotus 19s at Laguna Seca. Moss won, but it was a epic battle between a great driver and a coming to great driver.

In 1959 a little club track in Coquitlam, British Columbia Canada just outside Vancouver opened. It was designed by Sterling Moss. That track operated till 1990. Many drivers including myself enjoyed that track that was built on a mountain side.
Sterlings impact on racing was felt far and wide and will be forever remembered.
    Rest In Peace
There are numerous videos of bike and cars racing there as well as the opening ceremony for the track attended by Sterling Moss in UA-cam.

Interesting that Sir Stirling's first race was at Goodwood, and it was a race at Goodwood that ended his career. A model citizen, a model racing driver and a person that every professional athlete regardless of his or her chosen sport could do very well to take a few cues on how to behave both at and away from the sports arena. Class is timeless. We are very lucky indeed to have ever had a fine gentleman like Sir Stirling Moss grace this earth.

Even if he had never done anything else, driving a thousand miles in 10 hours 20 minutes on busy roads in 1955 was a titanic feat of endurance and skill. In his races, he usually either won or retired with mechanical troubles.

A Knight Bachelor title of Sir is a lifetime award only. It dies with the holder. As such it's usual etiquette for the naming to revert back to normal after somebody's death. For example the Kinrara Trophy has now been re-named the "Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy". Not the "Sir Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy".
