Hey man, pretty sure I was the guy that talked to you guys as you were packing up the boat at Sibbald Point. We were the only other boat in the parking lot. Really cool to see what you were talking about as you mentioned you were filming schools of perch that day!
They are spawning it looks like. With the huge female in the centre of the ball. Also you can see the eggs floating all around the water ,making the water look cloudy.
Thanks! When I was Young my father used to net fish (varvo) and that is one think he told me "if one female get in the net you could fing up tp 50 males in too".
Richard Belanger we've had similar experiences with longnosed gar where one large female is surrounded by numerous smaller males. Trying to catch the larger fish usually results in a number of the smaller males being caught first.
Nice to see. The schools are not as big as they used to be unfortunately. Years of cormorants, and invasive species as well as increased phosphorus loading have really done their damage on fish populations. In this video, you can see all the smaller males following the larger hens (jumbo perch) waiting for the opportunity to spawn when she is ready.
Outdoorsygal O Thanks for the feedback and description Outdoorsygal O. We traded the rods for cameras when we noticed as well that it was a female centric school of pre-spawn perch.
Incredible footage of one of my favorite fish to catch!! I would love to be able to fish Lake Simcoe one day.
It's one of my favourites too! And one of my favourite places to catch them.
Incredible. Hundreds of smaller perch following that one giant. I've always found fish behaviour to be fascinating
Incredible video footage from 5 years ago!
Thanks Peter! Appreciate the comment!
Very nice video. Now I must get my boat ready.
Corey Drysdale Thanks Corey and good luck on the water!

Dima Mykhasko It was great meeting you out there! Maybe we'll see you there again as that is where we usually launch on Simcoe.

Now THIS is an impressive way to "catch" fish! These clips are amazing.
At :19 - :22 in the video look in the bottom far right corner an you will see a 2.5 pound perch!
Yes I saw that monster too... awesome fish

Awesome video!
Thanks Dean. Looking forward to posting more of these this season.
Beautiful man
Great work!
I hit cooks bay a handful of times every winter. Always a good time. There are some brutes in this video
Perch is one of those versatile cooking fish, delicious fried, baked ,grilled ,smoke&even in sushi.
Gonna have to try making perch sushi now!
Haven’t tried perch sushi either but perch whether fried, baked or grilled is definitely in the top three for me
at 00:23 the big one may be a female with all males around it! Month of May may be the end of the breeding period...
Definitely Richard. There were a few schools of multiple males following a much larger female.

Overfishing and ice anglers targeting females full of eggs can be added to that list.
id like to see the reaction on the school after a catch and release to see if it spooks them all
Water is quite clear, eh?
What camera did you use for this? A GoPro?
+Panfish GoPro Hero4's for the underwater shots. And lots and lots of patience!
Awesome! !!
love the perch
do perch live in fresh water or sea water?
Fresh water
You can find perch in the Baltic sea as it's water isn't that salty.
