- All of the teaching staff at St. Peter's United Church of Christ Preschool in Ohio recently quit their jobs. Although the teachers said they had dedicated their lives to helping children learn, their decision came because of a lack of financial transparency from the church council. This included finances the teachers themselves had raised.

Just because they use a church label doesn't make them any more honorable in their business dealings.
In fact, there are more shady people, because the church gives you this veil of honor, no questions asked. Especially when it comes to access to children or money, there will be those who have ill intent.
In my opinion, as soon as anyone attaches their church label to anything, they immediately throw down red flags and become suspect.
@@Susweca5569 You should be suspicious of everyone until they've proven trustworthy. All people are capable of wrongdoing, given the right motivation and opportunity. True Christians, and churches operated properly, will be trustworthy because they'll live according to Christ's teachings and apply those principles to their business dealings. But bad people will call themselves Christian or use a church as cover for their own purposes and they don't always strive to do what Christ would. Just like bad people have become doctors, nurses, politicians, police officers, and non-profit charities in order to prey on others. The Bible teaches Christians to correct one another in love, but to remove a person from the group who refuses to correct their wrong behavior. Churches who haven't done so are not behaving as they ought.
It automatically makes them less trustworthy than lay businesses.
In fact, because churches depend on selling lies and myth as truth for money, they should be deemed _less_ trustworthy right from the get-go.
It takes a lot of guts to do the right thing and leave. The fact that the teachers all resigned in mass says so much. I am glad they had support from parents.
That's good character. Wrong is wrong. What a shame nobody can be trusted.
Let's hope that these wonderful people find positions at other schools.
LOL! Good one.."in mass". Nice play on 'en masse'. 💪
This smells like malfeasance in office and a cover-up. Need an investigation or audit immediately. The parishioners need to force those in charge to make this right.
Some churches rely heavily on tuition from their schools. Without their preschools and K-12 schools some of these churches would have to lay off staff and make other budget cuts like delaying maintenance.
And why aren't they talking about possibly relocating .. Theres thousands of church buildings .. to consider Restarting at another facility
@@cathymiller2798they have no money, the church has it!!! Duh!

Someone there was enlarging their swimming pools, or upgrading their yachts! They're hiding what they did with the money!
A lot of churches would have to lay off staff or close if they didn't have the income from preschools and K-12 schools.
@@OrioleBeagle this is just preschool , 2 days a month is $115- $125 and 3 days a month is $155 and they had 102 kids , that is a LOT of money every month plus there was donations from people and also fund raisers , there is absolutely no reason or excuse for why the amount collected was never available , the so called "church" has obviously been stealing the entire 18 yrs , that is why they couldnt be open or transparent or give an exact amount at any time . . Wanting transparancy and to know how much is in the budget makes complete sense and when your entire staff is about to quit over it there is no reason to not have transparancy if there is nothing to hide but obviously they couldnt do that , their stealing would have been found out .

Wish the staff could start their own preschool. Sounds like they are very caring teachers.
All those religion tax breaks make a difference. As church school, the fact that they can take money in with no tax burden, like anybody else has to pay, disincentivises a nonaffiliated school because now it has to follow the rules the rest of do. Church schools are inherently an opportunity for a racket.
@@yippieskippy2971A few church schools are. But I think if you did a percent analysis, there would be more corruption in the public schools. The curriculum of the public schools has deteriorated. Yet it is important to have public school.
@@lizhall2961 "the curriculum of the public schools has deteriorated". Citation plz.
Glad they walked out! Bravo
except now all the children have to find another school.
@@nancyfarkas3592 That's addressed in the clip. Parents are in support of the teachers, and they're the ones who will find another school, not the children.
I am so sorry for the staff. I have been through chosing to leave an unethical daycare, and resign from my teacher position. Not all people involved in daycare, or churches are moral, ethical people. 😢
Organizations that have humans have that problem, religious or secular.
Going through it now with the nonprofit that I work for. It’s crazy!
In my experience many are not.
Choosing, not chosing.
A church not being transparent about their use of funds, especially those raised by others? SHOCKER

That takes capital. It might be possible to raise it in the community or another church may be willing to start a program or hire them to expand a program. There's certainly a need in the community; 102 kids were enrolled there this year ....

As Dr. Phil always says, "People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing." What is the school management hiding? Best of luck to all of the staff.
Phil should of said that to Trump about him hiding documents in Mar-a-Lardo.
Dr. Phil seems to have forgotten his own words as of late.

The IRS needs to send in an auditor. This is NOT a church; it’s a regular business that should be paying taxes. And they have the nerve to have an officer escort the teachers out. Close the school down!
Funny. IRS has done one in five years.
@@User12347ejdj. Are you saying the IRS has done an audit in five years? I’m not really understanding what youmean.
@@libbyworkman3459 just one church has been audited in about five years.
Religious organizations are not audited by the government. The preschool is run by the church. People give their money freely to the religious organizations. No laws are broken. Only in extreme cases when many people complain do some small church gets shut down . There are some government regulations that need to be followed to declare itself a tax free organization.

Nope. They love it because they hate school. Lol. Get to stay home with mom time.
With all the vacancies all over the countries, those teachers will have no problem finding other positions.
It will be harder as I know a lot of school districts are now requiring teachers be bilingual in English, especially in the lower grades where the youngest children are least likely to know English.

My kids went to a private school. We paid $900.00 a month for 3. We did all we could, volunteered for sports, fundraisers , scouts etc. so did all the other families. Awesome community. Sometimes, I voiced my opinion when I didn’t like what I was seeing! The teachers did everything for the students because they believed every child deserves it. They could have gone to teach elsewhere, and made more money , but they liked the caring community.
I am sorry that things have come to this ending. I pray you all are able to find employment soon so you and your families are taken care of. Something will be exposed now that this has come to light.
I would urge someone to investigate for possible fraud or misappropriation of funds. I also feel that the parents should seek other daycares for their children as this one seems shady.
What if you all got together and opened your own preschool? Not like you don't have the experience.

Wow! I'm glad they all went in unison because of the terrible management of the school!
This is a classic example of why many parents and educators are against school vouchers. There is lack of transparency and oversight for the funds,
This story is heartbreaking it’s obvious she cares deeply for her students 😢
this is a very sad story. i hope that the staff remembers that they are courageous and that they stood up to an injustice as they move on. what a shame.

We lost 32 teachers 😢at our school this year because of behavior, cell phones and lack of support from administration. “It sucks”
Church is a business. Making money off the faithful and ones who barely can make it. The higher ups don’t care.
Christians love all those shepherd metaphors so much that they forget shepherd don't protect their flocks out of the goodness of their hearts, but because they want to keep fleecing them year after year.
I'm not saying there aren't ethical churches that provide community and a trained on-call counselor in times of crisis, whose members feel they're getting good value in exchange for their tithes, but an ethical church is transparent about their financials.

I agree ☝️
The bigger the church, the more corrupt it is.
Using school funds to make up for shortfalls in the church budget. It happens all the time. A lot of churches would have to lay off church staff or other budget cuts if they didn't have the revenue from preschools and K-12 schools.
So misappropriation? In a church? The parishioners should oust the council and Pastor & prayerfully begin again.
This is to the parents of all those kids thank you for supporting those teachers I would also say to them band together buy lap top computers for your children and hire those teachers to be on line teachers for your children .this way your children can still learn from the teachers they know. and still have live conference interaction .
There's a kleptocrat in every church and school.

There's no indication of that.
Did they say which city in Ohio? There are a few of that particular church in Ohio.. did I just miss it?
You didn’t miss it! The reporter is not very good! She never mentioned the city only the state. Duh! I googled it………it’s in Amherst. Maybe she should give a FULL report!!
My first thought also: Oh, just the state name? Because there are no cities in Ohio? If the interviewer were from, say, New Zealand, and the particular city name would be meaningless and the state name was already a fine detail for them then leaving out the city name would be OK. A North America interviewer? Pathetic.
News readers do it all the time…Midwest has a tornado and you have to wait until the last sentence to find out what state even. Mass shooting gets two paragraphs before they say where. Serial killer, airplane crash, etc. too.

The church is often no longer the example of Christ in the world. It resembles the culture not the Savior. You willl know them by their fruits. We must endure (persevere) till the end.
BUT YET THEY REAP THE REWARDS OF BEING TAX EXEMPT 🤷🏻♂️
If a church won’t show its finances it need to pay taxes. Plain and simple.
There needs to be an audit
Parents and staff can open their own preschool without the church involved. PROBLEM SOLVED 🤷🏻♂️
The Catholic Church reduced my friend to tears and really broke her. She was a young single mom, barely scraping by, but they literally sent her a letter dismissing her because her tithing was not higher. Ppl, God is free. No matter what god you believe in. If you believe. I stand with these teachers.
Incorrect. Only the grace of Jesus is freely given. All other religions rely on behavior and good works. Study all religions. Jesus is the only free gift. He is the only way to be washed and reconciled to The Father.
The Church of Christ is not Catholic. Catholics don’t tithe.
Catholics don't tithe. You can't be dismissed from the Catholic Church for being poor. Now if she wanted to put her kids in Catholic school and couldn't pay, that's another thing.

Greed is everywhere.

Very very VERY sus!
95% of the time this means that they are embezzling the funds - using them to buy things for themselves and not for the institution that funds were collected for.
One possibility is that an in-group is using the money to give themselves no-interest loans or outright buying things for themselves and making it look like school supplies. Sad.
Some churches rely on their schools to make up for budget shortfalls in the church. It happens all the time.
It’s probably been squandered on exotic trips to attend a meeting in Hawaii.
The money is gone and it is in somebody's pocket. What about the Annual report and the IRS reportsd

Brave and honourable teachers. I hope they are able to start their own school with the children that attended that school. Time for an audit!
This happened at a local elementary school, where did all the funds go?
It’s hard to take an educator seriously when they say “expeshally” as soon as they start talking.
I hope she didn’t say “expecially” to the children.
I'm UCC - Proud of all of you for standing up for what's right in addition to teaching children (one of the most important jobs in the world). Prayers for the whole staff.
It sounds like the church council is the problem, not the entire church. Usually, the council makes decisions and works with the school. This whole situation is sad for the children and teachers.
Crooked at the top. There is yer trouble.
Very sad but maybe they will find out later that the church was surviving off the monies that came in from the day care. If that was the case they should of told the employees that. I think any time a church and daycare are together there does need to be accountability of the funds so then it i clear where the monies are going? Also if the daycare is run separate from the church there needs to be different budgets for each. So maybe that was not happening and then that is why they would not show it on paper.
I'm so sorry for the teachers and children. Shame on the church cover-up.
Love the journalist! She is so smart and demure.
*They need to given the funding & resources to start their own school.* They already have the community behind them, & they’re the ones who should be running things, anyway.
Except that the community has already donated a lot of money to the church for exactly this purpose. Do they have the resources to do it again?
The parishioners of the church should have a strike: No more tithes until the church council opens all the books. Hit 'em in the pocketbook; that's where they'll feel it.
Somebody’s got their hand in the till. Whoever the AG is in this area needs to investigate.
The funds is in somebodys pocket
COUNCIL has an N. Thanks!
Was there no way of keeping a record of what money came in before turning it all over to the people in charge?
Bravo Believers! God bless you all!! 🙏
The church literally called the police on their staff. 😢
After eighteen years and they never gave you a budget? 🤔
Per another news source, the "entire staff" quitting was four people. The total amount of funds in question is approximately $53,000 over the years. Perhaps preschool and church funds were comingled with the latter paying salaries and expenses during years when enrollment and fundraising weren't high enough. These women should have raised this issue when it began 18 years ago or whenever.
I felt like the news was purposely not saying.
For all its faults, you don't expect this from a UCC church.
I heard the church in Flora Indiana a tiny little town has like 4 million what's up with that
In Australia we have the freedom of information system for the general public. Why wasn’t the dept of Internal Revenue (Taxation Department )contacted to complete. An audit for the past 7 years so the outcome could be revealed to the school treasurer / bookkeeper dealing with petty cash and requisitions for student necessities during lessons ?
Who wants to bet the school administrators had their fingers in the school cookie jar? Why else would they be so secretive?
I admire these teachers putting their jobs on the line. Those who donated money could stand up and demand an accounting for its use. If they donated it for the school, it should not have been used elsewhere without their consent. It's not unreasonable to demand transparency for donated funds. Unfortunately, there are poor practices (and outright bad ones) in many organizations, including churches. This doesn't mean all churches are evil or bad.
Why did they bring in an officer to escort those people out? Did they think there would be violence? I really question that managements ability.
PROBLLEY no funds left.
The staff should know how much funds are allocated to each one of them. How are you supposed to plan classes? If the board has a misappropriation of funds that can be proven, all the better. My best to all of you.
I recall when I was 6 or so being at my Grandma's house and on Sundays she'd have the one Church station on the TV. Back then, it was for the elderly who couldn't get to church to hear the weekly sermon. I'm in my 60's now, and there are SO MANY televangelists and instead of sermons, there is YELLING and a live audience. It is all about the money. These women worked hard to raise money for their school and the church absconded with their funds.
I’m confused, what exactly happened? Was the staff not paid? I don’t understand.
The director doesn't give straight answers either.
People need to stand up for what they believe in. I applaud them. Hopefully change happens.
People are fed up and I don’t blame them. University’s are closing as well at a rapid rate 😮💨
Audit needs to be immediately.
Stealing lead to it.
I feel like that was just so shady and so cold of the church that particular church because not all of us are like that.Praying for all of their will beings. And that God will open up more and better opportunities for them.
Long ago there should have been an audit.
just quick math they are pulling in between $15000 + to $11000+ per month so your budget should be pretty good
(actually probably a lot more)
Just a thought these teachers should reorganize and do online classes for the same children I would think that would be a great solution to tide them over we practiced that new way during covid and I think it would be a good thing for the spirit of the children and these teachers to be able to do this community building effort together I'm sure they could get someone if they needed it to help organize it quickly
I don't know what the situation is here, but in the past, I have seen at least three "pre-schools" use church facilities. The folks who run them do not pay a reasonable rent for the use of the building--electricity and heat, cleaning and insurance costs. So those costs are born by the church members despite the fact that they have no control over the program or the budget of the school.
I work at a university that has existed for over 200 years, and the last few years there has been sort of a political coup coordinated with state government. That past leadership got us through the Great Financial Crisis, caught up the IT infrastructure, and got us online during COVID. The new leadership immediately put all the marketing people under one roof, and rather than serve all the university, they only serve the new president in a doublespeak campaign. It seems less about value creation and more about political control. It's weird.
Fishy
I wish those staff members would start their own preschool and take the children from the chursh with them to the new school.
That’s cold. I’m sorry.
She put up with this for 18 years, so what changed now?
They were using those funds as a piggy bank.
It's funny, no matter the situation people will always look for a way to exploit systems and gain unfair advantages. I used to go to a church and quit due to depression and personal issues, shortly after it split because one of the staff was caught having stolen more then $150,000 from donations for the new building; fled to another state and the leadership didn't press charges. So obviously that caused shock waves and basically caused 1/2 the people to leave.
Why weren't the funds separate from the church's?
For lots of churches, the only thing keeping them afloat financially is a school. But I wonder if either the pastor, or the church board (or both) has been in place the entire time? It sounds like they have been using school funds for church expenses without keeping good books.
Pastor is saving up for his Bombardier Business Jet....
Their nonprofit status should be investigated!! Contact the IRS.
The IRS needs reasonable grounds for suspicion in order to start an investigation. What they're doing is skeevy, but I don't think it's per se illegal. Churches are traditionally given a lot of leeway in how they run their organization.
Plus, it would also be political dynamite in today's climate. We've already got Christian Nationalists martyrbating about how the evil secular government is coming for your religious freedom. The IRS even starting an investigation of a church would be like throwing jet fuel on a bonfire.
I've never done this but I messaged them on FB and gave my 2cents politely. Then I blocked them as I don't want to hear their opinion of my thoughts. Having worked in preschools as a teacher, it is a low paying job out of old sexist thinking. "Women's work". Yet I'll bet this church's leaders preach about Jesus's love for the little children. God love them.
The funds are there - and by ‘there’ we mean the Cayman Islands.
