Cooper started his career at BBC Radio London before presenting and producing programmes for BBC Hereford & Worcester. He also worked as a journalist at Three Counties Radio before becoming a producer at Radio 1. After a brief sting at Capital Radio as an executive producer, Cooper returned to Radio 1 where he became Head of Mainstream, then later Head of Programmes between 2006 and 2009, where he brought Vernon Kay to the network. He was appointed the station's Deputy Controller in 2009 and oversaw a major restructuring of programming, which included introducing Fearne Cotton and Greg James as weekday presenters. He became Acting Controller in July 2011 following Andy Parfitt's decision to step down as Controller, and was appointed as Controller with immediate effect on 28 October 2011.
Absolutely brilliant advice!! Some extra piece of advice I would give is, don't be fooled in to thinking it's an easy job where you meet the stars, earning loads of money, etc... It doesn't happen unless you're a big name working for a big station! If you want to reach the top, you've got to put A LOT of hours in(!), and A LOT of hard work(!!)... and don't get over your head thinking you're the biggest & best broadcaster in the world, 'cos no presenter is bigger than the radio station itself!!
Amazing video, I am impressed.
Great interview! Enjoyed this :)
Excellent advice and i am very lucky i do community radio hosting a show each week which was my dream. i hope to be on a bigger station does not need to be radio 1. But a nice commercial station is good enough where i can be paid. the advice will help.
Posted 8 years ago when there was an industry to get into. Back then the writing was on the wall as Global continued to lobby Ofcom to relax the rules around local output. Finally in 2019 Ofcom caved and with it the radio industry.
Really inspiring
Ben is a very cool guy. He gave some very useful insights and they are very straight forward. All that is required is energy for the pursuit. Please feel free to share.
my name is Dylan and I want to work in a radio studio
He has to have a lot of skills cause his voice is unremarkable.
Clueless!
