      Labels are simply not in the artist development business anymore. Like any business trying to attract an investor you have to show proof of concept. In the music business that means that you demonstrate the talent skills drive and presents in the market that would attract investment. If you don't want to participate in the business exercise you can be very very happy artist outside of that. But if you want to do business you have to show that you're able to do business.

    Go for an independent label! Generally they are nicer and have respect for the artist. They also enjoy the music and support the band. Majority of them have a lot of contacts and some money to help with tours, records, etc. They are also generally based around a certain style or genre/sub-genre. Thus they are able to get a bunch of similar bands on their roster, and they genuinely like that type of music. Great indie labels include Hopeless Records (All Time Low, Neck Deep, the Wonder Years), Fearless Records (Pierce the Veil, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, Mayday Parade), Nuclear Blast Records (Nightwish, Slayer, Anthrax), Run for Cover Records (Basement, Modern Baseball, Turnover), and Pure Noise Records (the Story So Far, Four Year Strong, State Champs). If you do consider indie labels, just remember to avoid Victory Records as they will screw you over.

    To the comments below me: "Selling your soul" is a synonym for "I traded everything I had". Whether you want to make it in music, UA-cam, or sports, you absolutely will have to put 40-75% of your time to your craft and say "no" a lot to the people that wanna hang out. There's a lot you're going to lose in exchange for what you want to achieve, that's where the phrase "selling your soul to the devil" came from.
    Little background story. When I was 14 I believed in that pretty much, to a point where I went to a priest and spoke with them about it for an hour or two to hear their opinion on it. I heard so many musicians say that and I actually believed in it too, but later the more I was writing songs and analyzing lyrics and going deep in some subjects I realized it's not exactly real.

Sell you soul , yes that is very much a real thing, and its worth more than gold to them , its your integrity, your essence, your hope and morals, your beliefs, your future. Its your light. And you better believe the want it. Just say no, thank you, and do things your way. Thats your God given right.

    This is why music sucks nowadays. Artists are spending 80% of their practice and session time goofing around trying to create a social media presence. Im sorry, but thats the labels job. Theyre supposed to have some intern setting up all the social media, while the artist is IN THE STUDIO. You don't see brain surgeons operating the phones at the front desk, and you shouldnt have your musical prodigy typing away on their smart phone when they could be making hits. Its all very well having a big social media presence, but there are a lot of people out there who came of age when the whole idea of social media was in its infancy, and no one really considered just how far it could eventually be applied. When UA-cam first came out most people viewed it as an online version of You've Been Framed. A lot of aspiring musicians at the time didn't think of how an account with millions of views could lead to a potential career in the music industry, we never thought that the music industry would eventually take it seriously and become dependent on it to make critical business decisions. Opportunities like that were entirely missed - it was only in hindsight that a lot of people thought 'shit, we should have started doing this ages ago'. So its a bit unfair to assume that just because a musician doesn't have millions of followers means they're not worth taking a chance on.

    • @theinternbook
      @theinternbook  9 років тому +4

      Alexander Wood I think the point is today A&Rs from labels look at signs that help them make a decision to sign someone or not. A major one being, does the band or solo artist i'm looking at have a following of people who enjoy their music. Its not to say someone with a zero base of followers won't get signed, it just makes it a lot harder. Some labels are willing to take someone from zero to one hundred.

    • @alexanderwood3465
      @alexanderwood3465 9 років тому +15

      theinternbook Yeah, I know some labels will take a chance even if the major labels won't, but I just think its a shame because they could miss out on someone who's really talented, because their opinion would be based on the size of their following as opposed to the quality of the music. Personally if I was in this position I wouldn't bother with major labels anymore, the sheer amount of lowest-common-denominator stuff they've put out is an insult to people who live and breathe music. The audience that gets prioritised are those who see music as a distraction/novelty from their everyday lives and not a valuable life-affirming experience.

    • @alexanderwood3465
      @alexanderwood3465 9 років тому +9

      Ellis Banks At least someone does :) I'm one of these people. I'm a musician who composes, writes songs and am in the stage of setting up a band page, but by the time I reach the amount of followers they're looking for i'll be regarded as too old to gain any kind of experience in the industry. And coming from Hull I'll face more resistance since I won't be part of the hip cosmopolitan 'in-the-know' scene they'll expect from someone who they would consider signing.

    Won't even consider signing an artist who doesn't already have a digital footprint is a great practise if you are *only* interested in money, but horrible if you genuinely want to find new and up-coming artists who have talent and passion.
    He wants us to have the will and dedication to build our own fan base so we can get noticed by Sony. And in the less polite term, he wants us to put in all the work, time and effort so we do their jobs for them. Yes, if you want to be 'ripped off' in terms of what percentage of money is returned to you (after total deductions from the record label) go ahead and strive for that 'golden' deal. However, listen to the man himself.....IF a person is going to have to do just about everything themselves....why would you need a record label???? Online environment is saturated with musicians. However, the value is created by scarcity. The artist is now greatly devalued. What does e.g. 5000 youtube views really mean? Does it automatically translate to e.g. 5000 profit (e.g. 1 euro per song)? I don't believe it. I would be very scared to sign with a record company that hires summer interns that count views and followers and then report the numbers to the big boss you see in the video and then he signs tha one with the most views. I don't have a master plan but I think the world needs more vision. Like where is Adele now? Lady Gaga is fading. Lana del Rey exited me but is now laying low. Big butts everywhere. The sound quality is good but where is the feeling, the soul, the VISION? Uhh, I must be too naive for this world but I need something exiting.

    The government really needs to intervene into this industry. The record labels have had too much power for too long and many artists struggle in such a competitive industry while their bosses make band and leaves most artists in debt. The system is formed where only the biggest artists survive, and it's sad to see how many upcoming musicians will have to sacrifice their own "souls" just to land the spot. The film whiplash and Black Swan really illustrates that message well of a struggling artist. And who's to blame? It's the system, and rampant Capitalism.

I couldn't call it "The Natalya Flores Band" because I am writing the music and lyrics, so I chose "Isabella Wainright" because Isabella is a classic vampire name and kinda creepy, and Wainright because it sounded victorian and prestigious. WainRight and not WainWright was just to be different, or add realism. When developing the theme for Isabella Wainright, I took inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock, Twilight Zone, and b-grade horror movies from my childhood. On Friday, October 13th (purely coincidental) The first thing I did was line up a pro photographer to shoot the photo of Natalya for our main profile photo and started up all the online sites, just about every platform I could. I knew I wanted the music to be heavy rock, melodic, and mainstream, but still have that creepy element; just enough mystery to draw you in. I was remembering Hitchcock's "The Birds," in digging on youtube, found a bunch of documentaries on crows. I combined that with my frustrations of dating in the modern era and wrote our first single "A Murder of Crows." Musically I stuck to the KISS technique of keeping it simple. To make it flow nicely I made sure to set up the chorus with a pre and a post. I repeated the title of the song enough times to get it stuck in your head, but not bore you to death. I had been posting lyrics and pictures for about a month or two, and started to build a good online presence using a lot of suspense- Facebook, Twitter, Revebnation, all those sites. Took about a month to find the right musicians to record with, wrote a few more in the process, went into to the studio for a 3 song demo, and got it to the music sites with distrokid. Fanbase grew pretty rapidly. We played the open mics and the opening acts. Made sure to get some live footage online, and started a buzz around town. Played a battle of the bands sponsored by a radio station, and our name was all over the radio for a few weeks. Took to Instagram @bellawainright and the vision I had before was much easier to convey. We have the most followers there. Now we're at the stage where we're headlining our own shows. Fanbase is steadily growing. Next move is to put together a press kit and start working THIS part of the industry. Thank you again for sharing this information, it was very educational! -Daniel James Brennan, Isabella Wainright Music

    I appreciate him trying to educate us and all and i appreciate the raw truth but this theory has some flaws, just because someone has a huge fan base it doesnt necessarily mean theyre the greatest, Ive heard amazing people who dont even have a youtube. Alot of people online build fan bases and success by buying likes or promoting a giveaway, not just raw talent o.o Thats why its called scouting theyre supposed to be scouting through the rocks to find gems. theyre making it about what can make the 'big boys' wallets fat fast, and less about the actual talent, the music or shaping communities and even generations with the messages they put out.

    So, how you "make it" is by basically already "making it", then a major label grabs you and either you "make it" and they profit off of you, or you/they dont.... C'mon guys, you dont have to make a million dollars OR be stuck in a crazy contract to "make it".

      Jessica, if you look good in a miniskirt and can sell products, they'll want you. The music industry? It's not what you think. But if you want to be a musician you have 2 or 3 choices .... start a killer cover band and play corporate gigs, weddings, parties, etc., and you'll make a living .... do your own thing but move to Nashville if you want to get placed ... or score for TV (you have to know someone or have a relative on a production team.

    Beware that record companies will do you no favours. This is a brutal and ruthless industry. Even being signed does not mean record companies will go out and promote your work. It's a well trodden road. Even great artists have been rogered by the big companies. Get a good lawyer before you sign anything and always try to retain some ownership of your material.

    Trying out for talent shows like "The Voice", "American Idol", "America's Got Talent", "X-Factor", and etc... that (TO ME) is the absolute SMARTEST and BEST way to get recognized. 1) You are saving tons of money (all you're doing is paying for hotel, travel, food, & whatever else). 2)You are being seen by millions and millions of people at one time than going venue to venue being seen by 20 people to a couple of hundred people day after day...etc.
    Those that have a problem with going on talent shows are jealous because they never had a talent show as BIG as those shows when THEY were starting out. Believe me, if they had something like these shows 20+ yrs ago, they would have been one of the first people in line to try out.
    Those are my thoughts, and I'm sticking to them..lol

    • @mythicalfair8130
      @mythicalfair8130 10 років тому +5

      You have to consider that a single initial audition for American Idol can draw thousands of people and you have to survive several cuts before you start appearing on TV. Plus shows like Idol are only looking for a specific age range. Certainly artists should submit to those shows, but not to look at them as a serious alternative to do the things this video is discussing.

    • @neetrab
      @neetrab 10 років тому

      Mythical Fair Well, if I'm traveling from New York to audition in Tennessee, I'm certainly taking it as a serious alternative. I understand what you're saying though. But hey, not all shows are looking for specific age ranges. Heck, look at Susan Boyle. She wasn't exactly 20 or good looking when she tried out for that Britain's Got Talent (or whatever show it was she auditioned on..lol). One thing she had was some serious talent. I think it goes without saying that you must be the best of the best, or you are definitely wasting your time. If you've got the "it" factor, you will most likely get at least in the top 10. That's why when you audition for those types of shows, I recommend that you are what you KNOW they are looking for. Not just going there with mediocre talent.

    • @neetrab
      @neetrab 10 років тому

      Mythical Fair Remember, I said that that's the BEST way to get noticed. I didn't say that was the ONLY way. Of course there are other options.

    I'm a drummer and I'm very talented at that. The only problem nowadays is that Starting up to be a artist is harder on your own. Take UA-cam as an example I could upload videos of me drumming and doing covers to songs but how do I get publicised and famous because that's the only way of really making money is having people demand music from you and then you can go on to tours albums but individually it's easier to do that as like a singer or rapper because there's much more character around that role.
