  • In responding to wrongdoing, both criminal justice practice and theological reflection have been controlled by the language of guilt and punishment. Both have largely failed to factor in the role of entrenched shame in understanding and responding to human transgression. Yet the unique saving power ascribed to the life, death and resurrection of Christ in the New Testament includes its capacity to expose, absorb and disrupt the tyranny of toxic shame in human experience.
Professor Chris Marshall recently retired as inaugural holder of the Diana Unwin Chair in Restorative justice at Victoria University of Wellington. Before moving to Victoria University in 2005, he taught New Testament for 19 years at Laidlaw College. Author of seven books and over 70 articles and book chapters, Chris has won several awards for his research, teaching and public engagement.

This is one of the most profound messages I have ever heard. (Once I adjusted to the kiwi accent!) Thank you so much.
