Luxembourg in Eurovision Song Contest (1956-1993)

- Here's a recap of all the songs that competed for Luxembourg in Eurovision Song Contest from 1956 to 1993, now with some better footage. Please, enjoy!
Luxembourg has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 37 times since making its debut at the first contest in 1956. Between 1956 and 1993, Luxembourg missed only the 1959 contest. Luxembourg has not participated in the contest since its last participation in 1993. Luxembourg has won the contest five times. Only Ireland (seven) and Sweden (six) have more wins.
Luxembourg's first victory was in 1961 when Jean-Claude Pascal won with "Nous les amoureux". France Gall then won in 1965 with "Poupée de cire, poupée de son". Luxembourg achieved back-to-back victories in the early 1970s, with Vicky Leandros winning with "Après toi" in 1972 and Anne-Marie David with "Tu te reconnaîtras" in 1973. Luxembourg's fifth victory was in 1983, when Corinne Hermes won with "Si la vie est cadeau". After hosting the 1984 contest, Luxembourg struggled to make an impact, only reaching the top ten twice, with Sherisse Laurence third (1986) and Lara Fabian fourth (1988). Since being relegated from taking part in 1994, the country withdrew from the contest indefinitely.
In 2014, Luxembourg's Minister of Culture, Maggy Nagel, expressed her desire for the country to return to the contest. This was later explained as a "misunderstanding". A collaboration with San Marino (SMRTV) was proposed, but it was later announced that the project would not move forward due to funding problems.

I'm here after Eurovision 2024 Luxembourg 13th well done!
I was waiting with excitment for the one single video on your channel dedicated to my country to be remade like the other ones, and I'm very happy that it's out.
To all people wishing for Luxembourg to return, I appreaciate that you want to see us again, but even more so, that you haven't forgotten Luxembourg and it's past! ❤❤❤
Luxembourgs Eurovision past currently has an influence on my personal life, believe it or not. Take a look at the drummer in the backround of Luxembourg 1989 and Germany 1998. This is Rainer Kind. I meantion this because he's the person who currently educates me to become a professional drummer, and I think it's really cool that he took part in a TV competition that I very much adore!
I'm curious... Do the Luxembourgish want to return to the contest? Because I know that your broadcaster doesn't want to, but what about you people?
@@im.joeyb. I honestly don't have a real answer for that question. I did have some conversations with other Luxembourgish ESC fans. We talked about Luxembourgs past in the Contest, about some of their songs and their surprising succes. However, none of them expressed desire, nor dislike in Luxembourg returning to the competition, but that may just be because I didn't ask any of them.
@@iseneau27 I honestly hope so. Luxembourg has always been one of my favorite countries. Especially in the 70's.
It's really cool to hear how eurovision has an impact on some people's today lives, and even more from the countries who are not in the contest anymore. So nice that he encourages you to become a drummer. I really liked the song from 1989 as well.
Send you my best regards, from neighbours Belgium
@@im.joeyb.we are planning to retourn in 2024
Welcome back luxembourg!!
30 years later, THEY'RE BACK
I wish Luxembourg & Andorra & Monaco would return and Lichtenstein would make its debut. They should look San Marino's success in 3 years. Even if they get bad results, everybody loves them in contest. I think small countries & microstates juice up to the contest by sending interesting songs.
Luxembourg is far from a microstate. They have more population than Iceland and Malta.
@@yeaboi564 They're still small compared to others.
Same. I also wish Kosovo and Kazakhstan would also make their Eurovision debut
@@victoriadeguzman6198 I'm not sure for Kosovo but Kazakhstan should make its debut too. They are successful in JESC. Idk why they don't participate?
Kazakhstan used the same dial code with Russia so they cannot compete in ESC yet.
Soon this video will need to be updated with the Luxembourgish entry of 2024!
I want a video about Morocco
There already is one

Massive Luxembourg fan here! Such iconic entries!!! The good and the bad 😅

Tali with Fighter will be the next entry on this list!!!
Luxembourg sent my favourite Eurovision entry ever: Tu te reconnaitras. I wish they returned again
@@Richardsonprincess00 omg I know I‘m so excited!!!
It's ironic that Luxembourg is one of the countries with the most wins of all - at a whopping 5 wins - yet none of the winners were actually from Luxembourg
The reason is simple, the Luxembourgish didn't care much about Eurovision, even though there's some Luxembourgish artist represented their country but still, most of the singers who represented Luxembourg are either French (for example: Anne-Marie David), German or sometimes Greek (for example: Vicky Leandros). It's also one of the reason why they quit the contest for 30 years, the lack of audience interest, the broadcaster won't willing to pay for the particiaption fee despite they could afford it and more importantly, their poor results during the late 80s - early 90s which also played a major part on their withdrawal. The wait is finally over, as Luxembourg has annouced their return to Eurovision in 2024, though I doubt the representative would be Luxembourgish, it could be either a French or a German singer.
@@quangminhtran2916 No, the reason is more that Luxembourg because in the Jury system French was a good language to get the votes from Belgium, France, Switzerland etc was always performing in French (only two times not and that were bad years). But the French of the Luxembourgians is quite difference in pronounciation than the original french.
I'll guess in 2024 they will just go along with the nowadays major language of the Song Contest: English. And maybe even come with a Luxemburgian singer, as the luxemburgians can speak quite well english nowadays thanks to 30 years being the major tax haven of Europe ;)
We can say that Luxembourg has long been the true representative of France. The representatives of Luxembourg (and their song) are much better known in France than the representatives of France! It's quite paradoxical, but France Gall, Hugues Auffray, Nana Mouskouri, Michelle Torr, Jeanne Manson and Lara Fabian have had real successful careers in France, while apart from Serge Lama (and a little for Isabelle Aubret), none representative of France only managed to make a career in France after participating in Eurovision...
(But RTL, the Luxembourg channel, was until ten years ago the most listened to radio station in France)
For me that is because our country was always open to other countries since I was born. All my best friends in Luxembourg to childhood and adulthood were foreigners living in Luxembourg, some took on the Lux nationality at age 18. My aunt-in-law is indonesian too. Lol haha. And my family is from italia Monticelli too. But I am Lux born
Who's happy we'll get a 2024 update of this -
😍😍😍
It's been 30 years since they left; 40 years since their last victory. If they were to return once more, it'd cause a commotion, not to mention a compete shock.
It has happened.

Anne-Marie David is really fantastic ❤
One thing's certain, fellow small state San Marino took Luxembourg's spot as the country where anyone from another European country or Australia can take part.
And, expect a culture shock because countries like Lithuania and Poland weren't around when Luxembourg was last there.
Vicky leandros 🇬🇷❤️🇱🇺
*_Not my favourite entry, but I HAVE to big her up: Nana Mouskouri (1963) is INCREDIBLE!!!!_*
-She's Greek (Not really important, but it's just something else to celebrate)
-She's released over 200 albums in twelve languages including Welsh and Mandarin
-She'd sold twenty gold records by 1974 - she was barely 40 at the time!
-She's the best-selling Eurovision entry of all time
-Had an album in the top 10 American charts for 6 weeks.
*_And that's just her career as a musician! Outside of this, she:_*
-Took over Audrey Hepburn's role as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF
-Became a politician from 1994 - 1999
-Forewent her pension to help Greece during the financial crisis
And the best part? She's still alive and kicking! ❤❤❤
she also made a special appearance in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest's Grand final where the iconic salt timer fail happened
❤Luxembourg, this little country always fascinated me
Luxembourg were the one of the first country who brought also non-native people to this contest... Nana and Vicky for example...
And because of Vicky wins we learned in Greece what Eurovision is
Having Baccara as representative of Luxembourg is a rlly big flex for ppl in the 70s
Who's here after that luxemborug is going to the grand final?
Vicky should have come first as well with l'amour est bleu, she actually had two very very strong songs
Indeed. I am from faraway Singapore and born in 1980, yet I knew that song (probably due to the Paul Mauriat version). Never knew it was from Eurovision until I listened to all the Eurovision songs last year. If a song has such a global impact back then when global communication is not as advanced, it is surely that good!
3:54 I don't think anybody hates this song. Let's keep it that way. It's so great.
unrelated but i love your pfp amazing album, and yeah poupee de ciree the best winner of the contest

Why have Luxenbourg leaved the eurovision song contest?
As well as Monaco, Andorra and Lichtenstein (which hasn’t debuted yet), Luxemburg is a tiny country, to which a small amount of people pay attention in circumstances of increasing amount of participating countries.
After hosting the 1984 contest, Luxembourg struggled to make an impact, only reaching the top ten twice, with Sherisse Laurence third (1986) and Lara Fabian fourth (1988). Since being relegated from taking part in 1994, the country withdrew from the contest indefinitely.

1963-1966 is almost weird. Nana Mouskouri, Hugues Aufray, France Gall and Michèle Torr are well-known singers in France. So are Jeane Manson (1979), Plastic Bertrand (1987) and Lara Fabian (1988).
meanwhile 1967 was famous in greece
1956- 7/10 (Strong debut performance)
1956- 9/10 (Such a sweet ballad)
1957- 8/10 (Love her distinctive contralto)
1958- 8/10 (Same as above I love her distinctive contralto singing voice, she didn’t deserve last place though)
1960- 6/10 (OK, but nothing special, nice to hear to hear the song being performed in Luxembourgish instead of French)
1961- 9/10 (Very good performance overall)
1962- 10/10 (Love his baritone singing)
1963- 7/10 (Fairly good, not the best, not the worst. Nice singer and I like how she is able to perform in different languages in addition to her native language)
1964- 6/10 (OK, but nothing memorable)
1965- 9/10 (Guilty pleasure, number one, R.I.P France Gall)
1966- 9/10- (Another guilty pleasure, her pronunciation might be shrill but I admire her happiness)
1967- 10/10 (Another brilliant performance, another Greek singer who is able to sing in different language, hats off to Vicky)
1968- 5/10 (Disappointing, not their worst entry, but nothing special about it)
1969- 5/10 (Not very interesting, it reminds me of a waltz song)
1970- 7/10 (Definitely didn’t deserve last place and nul points)
1971- 9/10 (Guilty pleasure number 3, very catchy and I like her smile when she sings pomme, pomme, pomme)
1972- 10/10 (Very deserving winner, her first performance was good but I like how she has improved a lot as she is very powerful)
1973- 10/10 (Such an adorable voice, another worthy winner)
1974- 8/10 (Not a terrible performance, but not as good as Vicky or Anne-Marie)
1975- 10/10 (Another cute singing voice)
1976- 7/10 (Above-average, not their worst, not their best, fairly good)
1977- 9/10 (Mesmerising with the church bells)
1978- 10/10 (Legendary duo, I never knew they could sing in French, very impressive)
1979- 8/10 (Powerful voice)
1980- 10/10 (R.I.P Sophie & Magaly, such a cute song as it is very catchy and another guilty pleasure)
1981- 9/10 (Risky to go for a ballad but still very good singer)
1982- 9/10 (I like her husky voice and I like the backing singers they are haunting)
1983- 10/10 (Very worthy winner, she’s got a very beautiful deep, clear mezzo-soprano voice)
1984- 10/10 (Adorable singer and I love how happy she is)
1985- 4/10 (One of their weaker entries, not my favourite)
1986- 9/10 (A massive improvement with a solo singer, she deserved to be within the top 3)
1987- 2/10 (One of the worst performances, not a big fan of Plastic Bertrand in general)
1988- 10/10 (Incredible singer and massive improvement from the previous year, she was incredible as Esmerelda’s singing voice in The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
1989- 3/10 (One step forward, one step back, not very interesting)
1990- 8/10 (She might be a bit shrill in her pronunciation but a major improvement from the previous year)
1991- 8/10 (Very good, not perfect but still very good)
1992- 9/10 (Such a cute and adorable voice, nice to hear Luxembourgish making a return after many of the previous entries being performed in French)
1993- 10/10 (One of their last entries, it might not be special but their vocals are very powerful and emotive)
R.i.p😭🥺
Maybe i shouldt say this because it means more work for you Lucas, but i'm so happy that this video is going to be obsolete!!
It's been almost 30 years since their final performance, yet Luxembourg is still one of my favorite Eurovision nations. So many excellent songs throughout the years. I would love to see them return, we need more smaller states in Eurovision.

I guess many of us ESC-fans miss Luxembourg in the competition. For me it is something missing out when the Grand Duchy is not in ESC anymore.
Les années 63, 64, 65 et 66.... On peut dire qu'ils ont eu du pif...
1988 is my absolute favourite from Luxembourg and one of the best entries in the history of Eurovision in my opinion. I can’t say Lara should have won over Céline though, because Céline is simply a living legend, but I think Lara deserved to come second right after her, not just 4th. It's a shame that two such amazing performances had to compete with each other in the same year.
I am sure Lara was very happy with the 4th place cause she has/had a great career in the French speaking countries and she's back living in Belgium to be closer to her father...
