You can ONLY play this genre if you own a tele. I believe it's illegal otherwise.

does it have to be a standard tele? or is my 70's tele deluxe custom not considered?
@@telecasterjade Only the modern player series counts, unfortunately ;(
Me playing this genre on a warlock.....
Psychobilly and surf sound great on a tele
@@temryava_ was gonna say that :') me playing it on a B. C. Rich
As a primary bassist who has been writing some emo style music on guitar recently my favorite part of recording is getting to write a super cool bassline that no one will notice lol.
i notice ! basslines are actually my favorite part of songs and they always stand out to me ^^
My first instrument being Bass; trust me I look out for it… that said they are extremely buried
@@ImmobileLizard its like guitar hero said, if the audience can hear your bassist, he's too loud.
as a guitar player, i still always notice
This is literally me. Primarily a bassist, recently just bought a tele lol
still kinda blows my mind that midwest emo and Japanese alternative have evolved to actually be pretty damn close to another style wise while having very little influence on each other. the musical worlds a weird one.
I thought they were the same lmao
There's some pop punk and midwest emo that's come out over the past decade or so that's shared a lot of musical similarities with country music as well lol. I love having such a wide berth of music taste that I can listen to 2015 Transit and go "this would've made top ten country if it came out today to the right audience"
I was just thinking that this sounds like an anime intro and the realization spun my head around.
what do you think midwestern emos are doing after school? watching anime 💀💀
Because globalization wasn't a thing in the 2000s? Japan loooooves western music. I personally know bands that no ones cares for here in Germany, but in Japan they play in front of hundreds of people. So, yeah, there probably was influence.
dude, do not expose us like that
Woah the actual midwest 😂
@@chrismaghintay 2
@@chrismaghintay midwest: the sequel
Eh Midwest 3 is better then Midwest 2 imo which is WAY BETTER then Midwest 4 which was a massive disappointment especially because the 3 before it were so good but I feel like the series really came back to it's roots with Midwest 5 which feels like love letter to the previous movies. But hey that's just me
@@chikinonfrydai midwest 2: electric boogaloo
Honestly these emo-ish pieces you write are so cool. Definitely my favourite type of video from you. Would love to see them more regularly
Anyone actually think this was a decent tune and appreciated all the different cliches? Just me?
47 emos agreed.
But seriously I don't think the guy meant it's bad, just cliche.
fuck yes
Meh, cliches are just what makes a genre a genre.
played in an emo band for a bit and the part about the buried bass lines is so true 😭
1:03 Dude, this is a sick riff.
It would be so good with a big vocal chorus, it's so insanely catchy. That's how you write music that normies will like too, get more people infected with the math rock bug
check out Dance Gavin Dance and tell me what u think of that riff now
@@Kaleb35 could you please tell me which specific song got that analogous riff, that's too sick for me🥲
@@adent5487 i think their older stuff in their downtown battle mountain album is where i hear that riff
@@Kaleb35 yeah dude, after this comment I listened a lot their stuff, including this album. They are absolutely fit my appetite, thanks man!
So basically, despite the hate, emo songs were actually very well written.
Death Cab for Cutie could be called emo, and their music is very well written
i mean midwest emo instrumentals are usually pretty damn good and intricate even tho the vocals and lyrics are mediocre and shallow
The style that got most of the hate was pop-punk, which is nowhere close to emo
@HeadFull that’s why I usually never tell ppl I like emo bcs the term has been bastardized and lost it’s meaning, whenever people think of emo, they think of lil peep and my chemical romance and not sunny day real estate or American football
@@marioncarbonell6047 my chemical romance has some fantastic songwriting
Dude, forget the clichés, this was legit awesome!
Can this become as cliche as we’re told so I can hear music like this all the time? That’s something I’ve realized as a guitarist by going back in time to the 2000‘s and trying to play songs from the scene of music. It’s underatedly really interesting playing and it’s harder than the average bear‘s level of guitar playing.
Look into Free Throw. Next top suggestions would be Hot Mulligan, The Hotelier, and Origami Angel
@@brandonphipps5363 I second that and add algernon cadawalader, sleepy dog, and marietta too
@@gramble968 I will add Hyakkei to this, for the beautiful instrumentals
Bro pretty much every midwest emo revival band from the 2010s sounds like this. You could listen to a new band every day for weeks and you'll hear the same shit. Love emo but the revival bands are incredibly homogeneous in style, it's why I typically go for 90s and early 00s bands instead.
@@freddiefackelmayer5267 fifth wave slaps. Weatherday and lobsterfight are killing it with personalities and great noisy sounds
And from every era of music there are some lame generic bands that can ruin someone's perception of the whole decade of culture but revival bands did bring a lot to the table. Bands like The Brave Little Abacus (greatest emo band of all time (i am not quirky rym dweller i just love good music)), Modern Baseball, and even god gamn marietta are really good
The piece written to illustrate the cliche's sounded really cool.
Your videos lately have been getting more and more awesome. I love this new direction, and this video in particular is sophisticated and subtle as well as low-key really funny in a deadpan way. It makes me want to learn how to do all of these technical things on guitar that you seem to be able to do with ease (though I’m sure this video took a LOT of work in order to look so effortless and cool). Looking forward to more of this!!!
Thanks for the kind words Rich!
This man is speaking some mega facts here
I feel like this is more "Japanese-Emo" than any other type of Emo
Anime Opening Type Beat. Perfect length too.
Math rock
This is literally midwest emo
You don’t *need* a telecaster…
But also you need a telecaster
Bro, these aren’t clichés. They are tools to make good songs
Didn’t realize emo guitar players were this cool, playing in open tunings and all that jazz.
I didn’t realize jazz was emo
there's actually a surprising amount of jazz influence in emo revival, it's great to see the musicianship and experimentation
Finally, an answer to the question: “Compositionally, what *is* emo?”
that tapping riff along with the song fits too well bud
This takes me back to freshman year circa 2003 hanging out with my best friend Jojo in her room as I played these licks on guitar and she straightened my hair. 😂 good times.
@Jack asking lifes real questions
jojo? masaka
Jojo was a dude.
Thanks for all of the song writing tips!
We're all EMO deep inside
But deep inside all emos is a sweet and fragile soul
This new Modern Baseball/ Tiny Moving parts album sounds sick!
I wish there was a midwest emo band with this clean of a tone and catchy riffs and a vocalist who could actually sing lol. Would be an INCREDIBLE gateway band
Title fight
The Obsessives
Golf!
Imagine being a fan of emo and asking for singers who don't sound like shit. Definitely a poser
yeah title fight
@@canadiansthcky the obsessives is goated
Fall Out Boy post-Cork Tree may not be emo, but Patrick Stump would've been an amazing vocalist to have in a midwest emo band. Just imagine him singing on a Cap'N Jazz/SDRE lite instrumental; probably would be like the best emo band ever.
There's also he who must not be named from that one band that talked about quiet things and sowing seasons, but you won't know him anyways.
I would legit sing for a band that sounded like this. Even when you try to meme it, it still hits
somehow this gives me chon, polyphia, dance gavin dance, and protest the hero vibes all in one.
That’s high praise
Ah yes, Polyphia - a staple for any emo playlist. Their lyrics especially resonate with me when I feel like my life totally sucks.
THE PIANO lol reminded me of TTNG's first couple EP's
It's funny because thanks to this video I started to listen American Football, and for American Football I started to listen Math Rock (my favorites Table and tricot). Nice video!
That's cool to hear!
@@SugarpillProd No jokes here. This video changed my life XD.
sounds insanely good. 🎸🎹👌
Curious if you have any SoundCloud or any other cloud accounts where can listen and buy your music. Would love to buy for sure. You're rulez, dude! Cheers!
Thanks! My bandcamp has all of my bands music on to download - sugarpillcovers.bandcamp.com/
That tapping melody sounds so damn familiar. The 2006 me is scrambling in my head to figure it out. Anyone know what songs that melody is reminiscent of?
Awesome job!
Thanks!
“pretend your playing in an odd meter” left me for dead in the desert
That little riff at 1.17 is actually sick.
Thanks!
you have a great talent with the guitar or big bass bro take my like
This just gave me nostalgia for pretty much every early 2000s anime opening.
Thanks for this man! Now im gonna become a emo superstar
Cool vid ;) very much enjoyed. Everything is very true. Blink have some of these let's say they acquired some of these traits themselves consistently despite not being generally labeled/labelable as 'emo' but thats another topic entirely, and one that doesnt need that much of a discussion. It suffices to keep in mind that genres are none than labels and admixtures and contaminations are always inherent to them, as a general concept. Plus yea if we wanna talk blink they had some kind of emo inside of them, always had, especially the post 90s era with boxcar and self titled and so. But u know theres no really a timeline specific for this argument, it's just there if you catch it. Anyway, cool riff
i used to play bass for a blues band that buried my super cool bass lines in the mix :(
i neeed a full song of this please !!!!
Damn a black tele with rosewood fingerboard looks beautiful
Love the little Bo Burnham shout out. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
that tapping part really sweet dude. give me diabetes than reading romantic novel
Lol, I now find myself wanting an endless AI generated beats track with these principles guiding it. Can you do a 10 hour version?
can we get a tab or full song for this?
Hey I played in a lot of “emo” bands, and I made a rule to only tune one string differently if I did an alt tuning, but I made it work in standard 90% of the time….I do play a tele though.
Dsmn, TMP sounding really good here
So where is the full version of this song, because it slaps
You forgot about the trumpet part
Please do Metal/Metalcore next!!
what do you think about the new tmp album?
I wasn't aware there was one, haha.
@@SugarpillProd well, have fun listening :D
Low key I feel like almost all their songs sound the same 😭
i don't listen to emo music pretty much at all but the capo being very high sounds really cool imo
this is literally dance gavin dance lol
The steamed hams shirt on point
It's a cool toolkit for sure
This sounds so good
Thanks!
This is really great. I'll take this over birds waking me up any day.
The tapping riff made me think of Scary Kids Scaring Kids
You missed the single sad trumpet!
This sound and looked so much fun to jam too tbh.
Experiencing everything in irony leaves one empty.
Dude this is fire
I wasn’t even aware of emo for the most part of my life but I like playing around with most of these things on guitar
Apparently emo is pretty dang nice
That was beautiful
This is so good wtf
They work for a god damn reason..all I heard were great riffs man
Qual a afinação?
What's left is a picture of a house to be a cover art for this song
Damn low key want that soundtrack
WE NEED A GUITAR TAB FROM THIS PLZZZZZZZ
Never been here before but I love it
I was waiting for the tapping. 🤣
this is lovely
I love how he makes all these videos kinda making fun of the genre in a positive light and it still sounds good
sugar pill has been daddy for years and it’s continuing
What open tuning was used?
what is your guitar model?
It's a Donner telecaster.
and i fucking love every one of them
on a blind guess i would say it fits 100% as Billy Talent track
what tele is that?
So august is falling! This rocks
I think it's still a bit too early in their career until they reach their emo phase. Give 'em a few more years though, haha.
"Background piano of sadness" :')
Background piano of sadness... my mortal enemy!
In which key was that songs played ?
Sounds good to me!
I'm ticking far too many of these boxes without realising
i wanna hear some emo recommendations
Ngl that was awesome
wich open tuning is it?
You even played it on a telecaster!
That's sounds like an anime intro.
Where do I start if I want to learn this Midwest emo stuff
I'd recommend just learning some popular songs from the genre. That'll help you get you used to some of the common tropes of emo, like playing in open tunings, tapping, etc.
OK, but where the tabs at?
What drum machine was that?
What about octave swipes
I coild still hear the bassline on shitty speakers of my phone so its not so buried.
Great 👍
heyy, what's the name of the chords he uses? :)
I unironically enjoy all of these
Anyone know what the tuning is? And if yes, why this tuning? Or is it made up? I used to try and figure out some emo tunes and get so annoyed because I was sure it was an open tuning I didn't know.
