Just seeing this video reminds me I need to sharpen my lawnmower blade. Thank you.
This is the stuff I would learn from my grandfather or Dad. Common skills we should learn. Unfortunately my grandfather has passed so thank you for enlightening me with your knowledge. I watch every video and enjoy every one of them. You literally could go around the house and explain all the fixes. Thank you.
You have to learn this?
Single oldish lady here 😅 I really needed this , thanks 🙏
*BONUS TIPS:*
•General rule of thumb is to sharpen the blade about every 20-25 hrs of run time.
•To test the sharpness of the blade, pick up a piece of recently cut grass and check if it has a clean cut (meaning blade is still sharp) or torn edges (meaning it needs sharpening).
•After unplugging spark plug like Chris said, pull the start cord gently a few times and stop when you feel the most tension. This is the top dead center of the piston on the compression stroke. This leaves no space (or very little space) above the piston for oil to get trapped, which could cause a hydrolock.
•When removing the blade bolts (especially if they're tight/rusted), use a block of wood to wedge between the blade and the deck. Not only does it free up both your hands, but you can now apply more torque to work the bolts loose.
•Most new blades have a 30-35° angle (usually 30°), but sharpening at 45° (as Chris mentioned) also works and is much easier for beginners.
•Sharpen the blade to a blunt edge (about the thickness of a dime); this will help it stay sharp for about 25 hours of use. You want your blade to be butter knife sharp, not razor sharp.
•Most blades need to be installed in a specific orientation. The cutting edge of the blade should face down (towards the grass), while the dull edge should face up (towards the mower's deck). Luckily, most newer blades have a stamp or sticker stating which side should face the grass.
•After you've cleaned the blade and the deck, get some Graphite, Silicone or Teflon spray and apply it to the blade + underside of the deck to prevent grass from building up. Non-stick cooking spray (like Pam) also works, but not as well as the others.
Thank you for another awesome video Chris.
And if anyone has any other helpful tips, please add them to the list.
Grease or anti- seize on the blade bolt"s" will assist removal. (torque correctly)
Occasionally tap the air filter element on concrete - - you'll be amazed what comes out !
Love how you were able to put a camera under the deck to show us the blade in rotation.
I had to make sure the camera wasn't going to fall into the blade!!
Great fatherly advice, easygoing feel, I enjoy these videos for their vibe.
Glad you like them!
Good advice. A lot of people can't be bothered but it's worth it. A dull blade tears the grass making it rip and sometimes dries out and dies. The grass does better with a clean cut.
Glad to hear from you Chris! Good subject for this time of year!
Before I started using pneumatic tools to remove lawn blade bolts, I used a block of wood attached to the deck with a clamp to keep the blade from rotating.
Excellent advice. The only thing you missed is setting the piston at TDC to help keep oil out of the cylinder when you tip it.
Thanks for another great video. Blade cleaning/sharpening is now on the to-do list as I was going to mow the lawn tomorrow.
If your oil needs to be changed, this would be a good time to do that, too. Check your manual for proper oil viscosity and if it can just be drained via the oil filler cap.
@@ronsamborski6230 Thanks …. Fortunately mine is electric so I I spared myself all the gas/oil stuff.
@@idandez Oops, I didn’t even think about the people who have the electric mowers.
It’s great how you explain every detail thanks for posting love your content
@4:32 At this time, I also spray Rustoleum Rust Reformer on the inside of the deck. It's amazing how much that alone deters rust and helps keep wet grass from sticking to the metal.
That's a good idea! I use WD40 once or twice a year.
That's one hell of a garden. Beautiful!
That is all my wife plus she likes to cut the grass!!
Good video. I typically use a file on my blades. When I do, I use a combination file that has a rounded side and flat side. The rounded side is use on the bend that all blades have. I also use a torque wrench on the nut when I install the blade. I have used belt sanders, and bench grinders but always had a problem with sharpening that bend. The file is the best choice.
Grass buildup will dry on the outside however the inside of the grass matting will stay damp for a very long time. Not cleaning it out at the end of the year, and/or mowing damp grass and not cleaning will accelerate the rusting of the deck. When you sharpen the blade, yes its smart thing to do to clean out the grass with a pain scraper and/or a power washer. Let it dry and then spray a couple coats of a rust reformer or such. A YT did do a test with that wheel well coating that hardens into a hard plasticized coating after the rust reformer and reported it lasted several+ years with almost nothing getting through it to the metal. $10-15 bucks is worth a shot especially for those of us with lawn tractors with big, very expensive to replace decks that can easily survive for 20-25 years.
I have the same ratchet you are using and I love that thing.
I have the same rachet but the position lock is broken already.
Good as always! Thanks Chris.
Glad you enjoyed it!
last time when i was working on my lawnmower, i did not know about the air filter thing..
when i started it there was so much white smoke coming out of the exhaust, i knew something was wrong.. then i saw the oil dripping out of the airfilter.
thanks for the tips.
Good informative video. My blades are usually toast by the end of a season. We live in a hollow on a mountain. All of the topsoil was strip off when the house was built 19 years ago. We are still picking up small rocks.
Great video Chris. Thanks!
Thank you 🎉
I ALWAYS love your videos! ❤❤❤ Thank you!
You are so welcome!
your videos are quite awesome, one million + subscribers well deserved :)
Wow, thank you!
Hi Mr. Chris! I never thought about sharpening the lawnmower blade. But now I know how. Thanks. I watched the Fireball filing video, too. Boy, that was a while ago, huh?
The fireball tool video was made 2 years ago.
Literally just did my blades on Sunday.
I use a high speed cutting tool with grinding bit , has worked good.
This is awesome!!! Was just thinking about this other day but had no idea how
Go for it! You’ve got this!
Good stuff.
Another excellent video! ❤
Thanks.
Good to know dad!
I have a battery electric Stihl 20",and for the first few years, skipped sharpening,as the owner's manual said to tighten the blade with a torque wrench to some metric number. I don't have a torque wrench,so only sharpened it for the 3rd season by taking it to the dealer. The first few years of cutting did not leave brown tipped grass after cutting, which is why I didn't sharpen it.
👍👍👍. Thank you
Great 😎👍🏻
Cheers mate using an electric mower makes blade removal a breeze I use a metal file, steel brush and balance it on a nail sharp enough to make clean cuts! Very good video. My blades use a 30-degree convex edge unlike yours however that's interesting
Extra tip: sometimes the nut (or nuts) turn the opposite way from normal when you remove them. I.e turn clockwise to remove! Check user manual. Also a scrap 2 x 4 piece of wood is handy for holding blade from spinning while loosening the nut. No need to hold blade with your hand.
This is when you realize how soft the metal blade is , I thought it was actually really easy to use the file when I sharpened my blades , and we can also see how quickly it removes metal on your vidéo .
I have one of these machines and a rather rough turf. I only mow when the grass gets long and the wife starts complaining. So my circumstances may be a little different. Having said this, I basically just run the blade down till there's hardly anything left of it and I start noticing it does not cut that well anymore. And this takes a long time. Currently the blade is hardly recognizable, it probably has only half of its original weight but it still does the job. It seems it does not matter much what's underneath as long as it spins fast enough.
Using a Sharpie, color the entire cutting edge and then file...it will give you a good idea of your angle and progress
Thanks for the tip!
I tried grinders before, including those you can fix to your drill, but I find that using just a file is by far the easiest, fastest, and most controllable tool to use to sharpen a lawn mower blade. Sounds like a cheap 5-star review when I read it back, but it's true.
You are totally on point!
Get yourself a battery powered impact driver. you won't regret it. Useful for many tasks. Like taking the lawnmower blade off without throwing your back out. ;-)
I've used an air impact gun for years. I'll be buying a battery powered one this fall when I swap out my summer tires. They are the bomb! No hose to drag around and get in the way of the floor jack.
I need a video on how to get my grass to look like his!
All I can tell you is it is not me! My wife cuts and maintains our grass and gardens. I am one of the luckiest guys alive with a wife like this. She's a gem!
After cleaning under mower deck, I spray the Big Blast version of WD-40. Not a fanatic about it, just when I have blade off.
I do the same. WD 40
💖
A "sharper" blade would have the leading edge curl and dull readily because of not enough strength behind the cutting edge.
It's fine on wood chisels but not on fast blades turning potentially hitting debris.
Hi Chris, I'm an unfortunate soul who doesn't have a vise. Any suggestions for a work-around? Thank you!
A couple of C clamps would work to hold it down.
Thank you, Chris! 😉
I used to use a mower when I was a kid, then I grew up. Now somebody else does my lawn.
Do you live in Florida? 😂 Everyone here has their own lawn guy. Well, except me. 🤔
70 dollars an acre gets expensive here in W.V.
How to hold blade if I don’t have a vice, nor work bench?
A couple of C clamps from the dollar store would work.
Tip. Buy a 2nd blade. They’re inexpensive and you will always have a sharp blade at the ready for mowing.
i've been meaning to sharpen my mower's blade but it's stuck on there, need a long breaker bar to get it loose. also i don't understand why the inside of the decks aren't coated with plastic or something so the metal doesn't rot out
You’re right about why don’t they coat them!
@@chrisnotap Planned obsolescence on the part of the manufacturer?
What about using a bench grinder?
If you can get the angle right and you have a steady hand yes.
@@chrisnotap I'm building a sharpening system for my lathe tools, so maybe I can sharpen that too
I use an angle grinder😁
Be careful not to remove to much metal.
It hurt a little bit watching you file there... Yes it doesnt hurt the file when you move it backwars. BUT: The file doesn't do much work if you only push it sideways. Yes, sideways movement is alright, but you actually have to make forward motion for the file to do it's work properly. And your forward movement was really minimal or even not existant at some point. This doesn't matter if you just want to break the edge on the back but if your blade is really dull and you need to remove a lot of material it will be a huge pita if you forget the forward movement. Thise is also why you see those sideways orientated groves on your blade.
My lawnmower hasn't have a gas tank or extension core of over 10 years. Man it's the way to go, just keep it at 60v or higher for standard city lots.
My favorite thing about an electric battery mower is not caring about which way I flip it. Heck, most of them seem to use that as a selling feature since you can store it upright if you want to.
@@jandastroyI remember way back when I was a teenager, I mowed lawns to earn spending money. One customer had an electric mower. I had to be careful not to run over the extension cord that supplied the power. No onboard battery back then. Mid 1970s.
another reason for not having a razor sharp blade is that saplings and similar will tear or "explode" when they are hit. A super sharp blade can turn a sapling into a super sharp spike or Punji stick that will go right through a shoe.
If you file it while the lawnmower is running you'll finish way faster.
Ouch!
That’s a Honda …it should have two blades …I think …
Most lawnmowers only have 1 blade. There are the odd exceptions though.
... "to see if they need sharpened" .... is chatgpt writing your scripts, or are outsourcing that to India?
No not yet! It's all me!
There are a few places in the US where this grammar anomaly is found. Normally it would be “to see if they need sharpening” or “to see if they need to be sharpened” but in a few places it’s common to hear as in this video.
"Take out the lvl on your iphone" ?? as if everyone have a iphone, so brand beaten Chris .
I've never had an android phone but I have assumed all phones had a level.
@@chrisnotap then say, take out your smartphone :-)
@@coreoncrackwow, maybe this channel is t for you.
Nothing wrong with that blade. Why even has a bevel!
I have to buy an iPhone to sharpen my lawnmower blade!? 😅 But no really the title should be the proper way to sharpen, or the through explanation of how to sharpen... Because easy this is not.
Misleading thumbnail. I thought you were going to sharpen it with a rake somehow. I'm very disappointed. Much dislike. Sad times. Upset.
You’re rather sensitive. One may say, too sensitive. Your impression from the thumbnail is simply unique to you. I did not think for one second that rake would be used to sharpen the blade…nor the gas container. Did you think the container was also going to be used to sharpen the blade?
@@mst5632 yes, I thought all of those things. All of them!
@@mst5632Sarcasm, look it up 😅
Major bummer for sure.
He was joking fellas.
Thank you 🎉
