I have a 2011 4Runner and it is beautiful. I think the preface lift (2010-2013) looks very tough. It has been very reliable and at almost 150k miles it feels and drives like new! Highly recommend it to anyone that wants a great SUV.

Hey nice comment...I'm in the market for a 2010-2011 4runner...what kind of engine oil and brand you recommend ?

I have the identical 4Runner, Blizzard Pearl 2010 SR5. I love it. BUT there are 3 engineering and design errors that I have never seen written about, so let me share them. (1) The radio and info screen above it are illegible. The color scheme is gray on dull orange. If you obey the law and turn on your headlights when you use your wipers, these displays disappear as they dim, and there is no control to defeat this behavior. No the dash brightness control won't help. I don't know what year Toyota corrected this but at some point it was fixed. (2) The parking brake simply doesn't work. It's better than nothing but will not hold the car on a hill. When new I tried to get my dealer to correct this. I was told that in order to tighten the action sufficiently the cable would not stay on its track. It is not possible to force a recall on a vehicle with such low production numbers (25k/year) because even if a hundred people complained, it wouldn't appear to be a serious problem.I like to apply the parking brake, release the foot brake and then, AFTER the car has settled, place it in Park. On a hill this strategy won't work with this year 4Runner, as it will simply roll away. (3) The "trailer hitch" is a vestigial little thing. In order to place the spare where it is, the hitch had to be abbreviated. It is so short that many accessories can't even be shoved in far enough for the pin holes to line up. IF you plan to tow with the stock setup, do your due diligence to assure that it is possible. Sounds like I have a lot of gripes about my 4Runner but that's about it. I just drove 1000 miles at interstate speeds. I was loaded so I stopped at a weigh station and it was 5380#. But I got my usual 21.9mpg on regular gas. Sure, around town I get 2/3 of that, but I'm happy.
When I have a lot to carry I remove the rear seat bottoms (4 bolts) and fold the backs down. With the seat bottoms out of the way it is possible to recline the front seats all the way, for a nap. You definitely want either rock sliders or running boards. I have the OEM running boards, which are different for the 2010-13 from later ones, so be careful when selecting. With them you can reach the front half of the roof. The rear is a different story. If you stand on the plastic bumper pad there is nothing to grab onto on the roof, so you'll fall off unless the car is pitched downhill. This will never be corrected since this is the only place you'll ever see that issue mentioned. . . . Finally, I'd consider a new 4Runner, but the 2019 is essentially unchanged from my 2010, and it may be some years before Toyota adds electronic safety gear to this limited-production vehicle. That would get my attention.

I have a 2015 with 80k. The ride reminds me of the ride that my '86 Lincoln had. I'm going to replace the front suspension and the rear shocks with a Monroe kit from Rock and I'm lifting the front an inch.

How many miles do you think is too many when buying a used fifth generation assuming all maintenance was done on time?

  • @rileysmith9843

    They should offer at a minimum 3 V8s: the 4.7, 4.6 and 5.7.

A 4Runner with the 5.7 would be something else!

Mike C it would be fast. 381 hp, it would compete with the Bronco 5.0 and the Wrangler Hemi.

I just bought a 2010 4 Runner Trail model I have had a couple Landcruisers in the past which were full time 4 WD and easy to shift to low or high but I am confused as what all the other knobs are for like Trac locking etc and when to use them. I live in Florida we are not allowed to take on the beach and most likely will never be able to use the features but would like to understand the uses and when needed, I watch a lot of videos of off road use out west and really enjoy them at 77 I just enjoy having the power , looks , and comfort of the 4 Runner if you have the time maybe you could explain all the knobs also I was playing around and the screen said Mongul what is that ? thanks

Torque converter is better suited for off roading. Much less demanding on the driver during serious over landing situation.
