- Please comment. When Scraping a Popcorn Ceiling, there is a very Common belief, that you can just scrape it and paint it. this is WRONG. And, I've seen it done many times. Learn why this is NOT a good idea. NOTE: Click 'SHOW MORE' below to open up the full description.
IMPORTANT- Be sure your ceiling doesn't have asbestos in it before doing anything to it. If it has asbestos, don't disturb it and you're fine. Be sure to watch these videos where I discuss the asbestos hazard.

Someone commented suggesting shortening the videos, and I get what he's saying, but I can really appreciate how thorough and detailed this is. I've had a naked bathroom ceiling for 2 years or more. I had scraped the plaster, it was a nightmare.👎I did a very mediocre job. Some of my ceiling issues are things you covered. I've spent the last few months mulling it over. I was going to texture wallpaper the ceiling, but now I think I'll paint. I'm rather new to home improvements, and I know nothing. Your video really helped me. I'm going to start on it in the morning. Thanks. 🙂

Thanks, I appreciate that 😎, & Thanks for subscribing!
I started at 18 years old doing drywall I've been doing it for many many years I've also plaster work as well. Most people think it's crazy but I just absolutely love it. I love design patterns I've got a Tuscany pattern I've got a fresco finish I'm slick finish in my house and I love to help people. Not for free usually sometimes😊
Only do whatever I have to do here at my house but I feel like I'm going to start a UA-cam channel just to show people all of the beautiful patterns I love the lace patterns as well it's just absolutely beautiful. And you can actually make figures of horses which I love of course I never met a animal I didn't love❤
And I love doing so finishes with the paint on top of the Fresco finish or the Tuscany southwestern finish all you do is paint a light color satin paint on it nothing really shiny and then you go over with a darker color and you have two buckets of 5 gallon buckets I'm sorry of water clean water dirty water you wipe it down first the dirty water which is actually clean to start with and then you close the clean water it's beautiful also leathering I love it Happy finishing 😊

Thanks for sharing. I've also been told to just scrape it off and paint it. Now I feel better prepared to do the job properly after watching this video and tour other one. Thanks again.
Awesome sauce! I know so many get told this so I'm glad I'm helping others understand it's not quite that easy.
This video is spot on. With our drywall business we have discovered that it is best to just hang over it and not deal with the mess and frustration.
Thanks so much commenting. I appreciate it and thanks for subscribing
Ive been a drywaller 22 years this guy is 100% right
I don't care how long the video is good wisdom is something worth any amount of time thanks again for this great video. Getting ready to do my Nauna's condo
We always had to put three coats of joint compound or mud the screws before we ever sprayed the ceiling we just didn't have to pull the the top angle take but it was usually always a good idea to bed back that top angles height.
Another thing to be careful of is to make sure that nobody has put any oil-based paint on it I have used a orchard sprayer I'm just mist the ceilings. Sometimes some of the texture stays up there without the actual vermiculite AKA popcorn being up there.
I have had people to tell me they like that.
You have a lot of good points thank you 👍 helping you and yours have a very blessed day 🙏😊👍
This video is spot on. Problem i encountered because i didn't get every bit of the popcorn base sanded off was that the paint would peel off when removing the tape when painting the walls after the ceiling
Check this out- You MUST Sand Popcorn Ceilings After Removing. SUPER IMPORTANT!

You are so welcome!
Test for asbestos before you scrape!!!!!!!
Great, informative coverage of drywall issues. Love your videos. I have been in the business for many years and I always learn from you if not get another professional opinion on these issues. Never stop learning. Thanks.
Dave, I appreciate hearing that. I love learning too and pick up tips from others like Paul Peck & others now & then. Do you specialize in the Drywall trade? 👷🏼♂️ And are you in the US? 🇺🇸
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY In the U.S. I have done painting, textures, venetian plasters and drywall repair for over 25 years. It is amazing all the variations on texture technique that are out there. Every geographic region seems to have its own version of skip trowel and many variants such as old world for instance. Paul has also got good content. I love to see how other pros are doing things and your channel is one such opportunity. I look forward to more vids.
That’s something a fair amount of Drywaller‘s don’t seem to understand, is that there is many many variations of hand textures. I’ve been criticized for the way I do it telling me that it’s not how a skip trowel is done, LOL. And I made up my own texture because I like it that way as do my customers.
I took a weeklong faux finishing class years ago and learned how to do venetian plaster‘s, Ovilla plaster’s, and many other cool techniques that I plan on doing videos about one of these days.
Thanks again, Guy
Thank you, Kilted Guy!
Susan, you’re welcome! Thank you!

Thank you, and glad to have you as part of our community. Feel free to ask questions on videos and good luck!
BAD NEWS- Hey everyone, as of 9/21/20 we have some bad news. We are suddenly being kicked out of our rental due to the sale of the home, (we were planning on buying next summer) and I'm having some tough medical issues such as Prostate Cancer, Permanent Vertigo, Restless Legs, Neuropathy (nerve damage) etc. So we put out a video explaining this and many of you asked us to create a Gofundme so you could say thanks for all the help I've given you on these videos, my comments, etc. I really hesitated, as I hate asking for donations, but then you said it wasn't a donation, it was a way for you to say thanks. So if you want to know more here's the video explaining what all has been going on (moved 9 times in 12 years, my wifes 3 knee replacements, my cancer, $7,000 dental Bill and much more). ua-cam.com/video/aRMwK_LTQQs/v-deo.html
You can also just read about it on the gofundme page at: gf.me/u/yzzrkz
NOTE: please don't contribute if it puts any strain on you at all, and there is zero expectations, or anything like that. But if you'd like to give back, Thank you.
What is your Go Fund me link?

Was thinking about scraping our ceilings in the house we had built 33 years ago and being somewhat naive in regards to home repairs...a friend of my told me to just scrape it and paint it! I would of never thought of ALL the possibilities of what I might of found under the popcorn. I am so glad I watched your video. Thanks Kilted Guy!
Deborah, that’s exactly why I put this video out. So many people think you can just scrape it and paint it and even if your ceiling is in good condition, it will still look bad. Thanks for the comment
People need your knowledge. Hope you keep making videos.
oh I’m not going to stop for sure. I love doing this and plan on doing it full-time in about one month or so. Thanks so much
Yes the videos are a little long. However, everything is explained properly. I feel as if I am in the room listening to him. A good thing. He has tons of experience and can save you many hours of mistakes a novice would make. Also mistakes will cost you money. Another point the videos are extremely detailed, pitfalls are pointed out, then you can decide if it is something you would want to tackle. It is worth the time to watch and listen to the complete video as there is lots of quality information. There is no substitute for experience.
Thank you. Guy
Thanks! You've just saved me from making a huge mistake.
I was anticipating a one or two day job from start to finish doing about 400 square feet. Now I know what to expect and look for.
Although there is more work than thought, I am motivated to do it the correct way. Thanks.
Cool. Be sure to check out this video as well- ua-cam.com/video/IkqCj0wFzwU/v-deo.html and Thanks for hitting that subscribe button.
I just got finished scrapping my kitchen ceiling. It came out great. After i scrapped it i sanded the some spots to make sure it was smooth. I didn't have a problem. Looks great. Getting ready to do my entire house. I just used hot water in a spray bottle and a scrapper. I made sure i had on a mask made by 3m. I had a pretty good time doing it. Had my music going and was done in know time.
Hopefully no asbestos
Eric Jones, did the same thing, actually used what the kilted guy recommended in another video. Worked great & looks great. I do need someone to touch up some areas. What a difference !
That really helped. Just bought 1978 home and now I'm thinking twice about removing that popcorn.
This was an extra bad one, as they aren't all this bad, but they all need some work. Just know what you are getting into.
Thanks for the informative info🙂 i Scraped a little , but I'm glad I caught this video before I Went to far😇
This is awesome! I'm getting ready to scrape popcorn off every room of the 2200 sq. ft. 1991 house we are buying. I'm glad to know what to expect and look forward to your other videos :)
Glad I could help. Be sure to watch my other video that details more about how to do it properly. It’s called- Removing Popcorn Texture? You Need to Watch This first! ua-cam.com/video/IkqCj0wFzwU/v-deo.html. Thanks, Guy
Mike Bell thanks but I’m planning on skim coating and sanding myself. We have 4 months of work getting done and aren’t moving in anytime soon. I figure by then I’ll be the professional. Just like icing a cake. Upside down ;)
Just realize that I do have a video on the skim coating and I’m going to be putting out more, but skim coating won’t fix half of the things in this video. Your best bet is to fix items individually and then skim coat if you just want a smooth ceiling. Watch some of my other videos on repairing cracks on the ceiling and such for advice on repairing the other items.
All I do is go through and recoat all of the nails or screws, which I have a video on that too, and then tape and finish all of the cracked joints like in my ceiling repair video, and then sand those smooth and apply a texture, or skim coat to leave it smooth.
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement got it! UA-cam University has me covered! 💗Starting in the closet and upstairs bedrooms and moving my way downstairs where more people will notice any imperfections in the ceiling. Skim coating for a smooth ceiling. Some of the texture is already peeling off from the roof leak so hopefully, it won’t be too stubborn!
BTW: the professionals are fixing that part of the ceiling.
I will have to do a video review on this item. I've tried a home made version and went back to my usual method, partly for speed and I also felt it was clogging my vacuum hose with wet, sticky mud crud requiring washing out the hose and the inside of the vacuum, since you are scraping off wet sticky popcorn texture which is carried by a mud. I think I'll stick to the fast method. You can just wear shoe booties and take them off when walking out, and let it dry overnight, then sweep it up. It's not really that bad if you do it this way.
So I'll plan on buying this one day and see if it's worth it for homeowners.
For people saying that this video is too long I will say this is exactly what I was looking for. everybody else was just showing how to take the popcorn off which is not hard and there's a plethora of videos that show you to wet it down and scrape it. If you have any experience with construction you will see as soon as you scrape it down you'll realize, you have some work to do if you wanted to look professional.
This guy has some good information but the vids are way too long. make the point quickly and directly. This will greatly increase your views.
I agree I'm subscribed but I have to watch the videos in 2x speed....
Could be but I appreciate him taking his time to explain it. I am a details guy and I appreciate his explanations. But everyone is different, but a very knowledgeable guy and his info is invaluable sometimes.
The long videos include more detail. Shut up and appreciate the time he took to make it
@@juanito3821 Juan are you his Publicity Agent?
@@bigdchi I wish 😆
Just scraped my bedroom and refinished it. I knew a man once who took a hose in his house and washed the texture off his ceiling. LORD he made a heck of a mess.
John Sellers I bet, lol

Thanks for sharing your talent! Your really a hard worker.
Thanks
Very helpful video. Thanks KG.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for commenting. Take care, Guy
I got pretty lucky with the job I'm on now. It's a custom built home that the current owner wants the popcorn removed and painted. With it being a custom home the drywall finishers did a better job on the ceilings, I've just had to spot nails and run the angles. The flats and butt joints are ran pretty well and just had to do some light feathering of the edges in places. All five of the rooms I have done have turned out beautiful!
Nice. Before my vertigo hit me so bad, I was preferential to doing a skip trowel and the way I do it I could bury the angles and never had to coat them. Now I just don’t do them because it’s too much for me. Sounds like you got a nice job to do there. Thanks for the post.
Want to fix knock down on my walls and bad drywall muddling it’s painted there are valleys and dents
Hi, 1, Do you have to prime it after removing the popcorn and before skim coat ? 2, Do you have to skim coat entire ceiling or just bad spots?
I thought you might mention something about the possibility of asbestos, especially with ceilings done in the 1970s.
I have mentioned the asbestos thing in other videos but I might have forgot here. So here it is. Some of the houses with popcorn ceiling texture have asbestos in it, but not all. And only up till around 1980 although it can go into 81 or 82 because they were allowed to use up their existing stock. So on older houses we always have it tested or we won’t work on it.
Here in Colorado, homeowners can still remove the popcorn texture even if it has asbestos. Contractors cannot unless they are licensed to which is why we leave it alone. Everyone should check in their area to see what the laws are and be extra careful if you do choose to remove it with asbestos in it. I would do a lot of research on how to do it properly.
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement is there a special way to remove it or is it identical. I know ir it has asbestos you have to wear PPE. But is there any thing more to it.
As a contractor I'm not allowed to remove I it so I haven't. But basically you are supposed to protect all surfaces from the asbestos debris, minimize dust like with water, wear full body safety gear, high quality masks, bag it really well, usually double bagged, HEPA air cleaner etc. That's why it's so expensive to remove professionally. That's just what I know about it and not legal advice.
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement makes sense but idk why contractors can’t do it. It’s like any other chemical.
@@bermudezeg Because it's a very dangerous substance, not a chemical actually. And if handled wrong it's very dangerous for the homeowner after you leave, as well as yourself and employees, so it requires special equipment and handling, which requires licensing to ensure it's done safely.
Garage ceiling (in Florida). Has fallen down in chunks several places over 30 years.
It is ugly with a capital UGH.
But it doesn't have to be perfect like inside the house.
Glad for the advice, because it is just a real PITA job/project.
That did help. Good warning. Thanks
Very helpful and extremely informative!!
Thanks, glad you appreciated it and found it helpful.
I did the bathroom today and learned all these lessons and having to skim over and retape at the joints omg not scrapping the rest of the house 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️

Cathy, Thank you for your service. And I’m glad I can help you. Thanks for commenting! Guy
As an asbestos worker who has had to clean up and decon ceiling scrapes done wrong. I strongly recommend that you have tested before you scrape. If it turns out to asbestos it can lead to a expensive clean up. Went it can be tested for about 100 $ can save thousands of $.
Agreed
I found out how bad it looks when you scrape and paint, did it to my kitchen ceiling not knowing until I painted it. Looks bad. Trying to fix it now the best I can. Thanks for the video. Won't happen to me again.!
You can fix it. I would sand it with 80 grit, then skimcoat it like in my video below, then leave it smooth or texture it. Good luck. Guy

I liked the video. Soooo much good info. Regarding comments about editing or shortening the video, I think if you titled the video differently then problem solved. But im sure that process isnt fun.
Tried to fix some joints on a wall last year, but didn't know exactly how to do it properly...it looks terrible and needs to be re-done. So, if we get a chance to correct the mistake this year we will. In addition, we have these popcorn ceilings that collect all sorts of dust and cobwebs. Doesn't matter how many times we carefully try to vacuum, they still look dirty and the cobwebs always seem to come back within a month (yes, we bug bomb too). So, that might actually be the project for this summer. Anyhow, thanks for posting, videos like this really help with the planning of these projects and know that it's not just a mater of scraping it off, but there will probably be a lot of repairs to do as well before we can even think about new texture and paint.
Hello, and thanks for the comment. I hope my videos can help you with your projects. If you find you need a lot of assistance with a project, consider our advice page at: www.thatkiltedguy.com/advice-page - Thank you
Arkine i remove wet method in ;oth bathrooms and now doing hallway, you dont need to coat the entire thing, use a plastic spatula and be carefull in the edges not to peel the tape, do small sections and dont over saturate i use a spray bottle and only path a few scrape marks. VERY IMPRTOTNT, BUY CEILING PAINT, dont use rwgular paint ceiling paint and primer, i use primer only with color add it.
I have scraped alot of these........some had more repair than others but it's not that big a deal as long as you know (which I did) that probably gonna have to do some taping after.......I did a whole house 6 months ago, it was a smooth finish and turned out great......
It's a messy job but goes fairly quick.....key is water (even hot water) and there is a very easy way to apply the water on ceiling fast, evenly, and without tons of water on floor...
Kirk, how do you apply the water then? I'm curious. I have a great way I like, which you can see in my video at: ua-cam.com/video/IkqCj0wFzwU/v-deo.html
With this setup I can spray up to 5 gallons continuously and it goes on nice and even.
We're are you located I need to hire you for my house in Atlanta.
Lol. Grand Junction Colorado
Thank you so much for the knowledge :)
Glad it was helpful!
You’re a life saver!
Glad to hear that. Thanks for commenting. Guy
What about this stuff is on a concrete flexicore ceiling in my moms condo
Thanks for the informative video. When you say caulk the gas between ceiling and wall, what is the caulk to use? And when to decide the gap needs a corner tape. Thanks!
I’ve always been able to just caulk them. Just use a really good quality non-silicone interior caulking. It varies with your region
Wish I would have seen this before I scraped my bedroom ceiling. SMDH
Whoa. I didn’t know Bruce Willis was doing dyi UA-cam videos. (That’s a compliment)
This is a four bedroom two bath Clayton built modular home and those ceilings are everywhere in every part of this place! If I don’t known then how bad I was gonna grow to hate these things I wouldn’t of bought this place for that one reason alone! I love everything about this Home it’s still in great shape because I’ve always taken immaculate care of it! But the ceilings just drive me crazy I hate them so badly!
What do you charge for a room like that 11x20?
Wow, this makes so much sense. Could you use an orbidle sander, or rewet the carrier mud and try to scrape that off?
You could do that, I just use the 9 inch drywall sander because it’s nearly dust free and much much faster.
I've scraped and floated the divits and sand smooth numerous celings and they are mirror like finish, just take your time and be through
If you take your time, and do it right, sure you can leave a ceiling as smooth as you want. Thanks for commenting
Great video. Thank you
My house in NH was built in the 70s and sprayed with that older vermiculite and likely asbestos stuff. Popcorn was also painted 2x by me.
I've gotten to be an ACE at wet scraping these down to the chalk lines. I touch up with mud, prime, re-mud where necessary paint and my ceilings look brand new.
It is easier to just tear it all out? Maybe but with 8' ceilings I can only do so much on a 2 step ladder.
Thus, I'll continue to scrape em all.
Hello Chris Augusta. I would NEVER tear one out, as there's MUCH simpler and cheaper ways to do it, like the wet scraping, dry scraping or even skim coating. Tear outs would also require new insulaiton, wall repairs, and much more. Thanks for commenting. Guy 😎👣
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Agree. Wet scrape and patch up is much easier. Walls I tear out as I can change them easily. I've probably hung 120 sheets in this house remodeling and only tore out bathroom ceilings as they are small.
I want these popcorn ceilings gone from my house so bad! But I’m 67 years old and can’t do it myself and it’s way too expensive to have somebody come in and do it so I just have to keep living with those dirty things I guess.
This was a great video! A lot of information I wasn’t yet aware of! Thanks!
Your welcome.
Hi I enjoy watching your videos. Last year, I scraped and painted the ceiling of one bedroom. Of course this was before discovering your videos. It doesn’t look bad, but I can see some imperfections. What should I do? I just retired - I get very little assistance with my efforts. I really would like to do the whole house, starting with the garage. Do you think I can do it? The texturing that is - what’s the easiest on the arms? Thanks! I think you’re great.
Hello Leticia Reinhart. , Thanks. As for what to do next, you have to repair all the minor or major defects so the best advice I can give you is start watching my videos on this playlist-
ua-cam.com/play/PLCrazHylAOEmgaS622xokiefd_jIRMrow.html
Ok, all hand textures can be a workout, but probably the easiest is a brocade texture or a stomp brush texture. You can find them in my videos at: ua-cam.com/video/jed1ObhddZ4/v-deo.html
In my travels as a handyman business owner I see a lot of shitty looking ceilings that the homeowner have had scrapped and then textured. The texture is usually too thin and the ceiling was never floated out after it was scrapped.
I hear you. There’s too many people advertising that they know how to do this, but they don’t understand how to do it right. After scraping, all of the joints usually need refinished, and if they do that right, then you can get by with a thin texture. But they often skip that step and go straight to texture and it usually looks pretty bad.
I appreciate all your comments, thanks.
Guy
You should have saw the celings I bid on today
Why, what did you come across, LOL. I don’t get shocked much anymore, but sometimes still do.
I have enjoyed a number of your videos. Have successfully taped inside corners with paper tape on "new construction" at our old farm house. After popcorn was scraped from the ceilings I have some damaged tape at the ceiling next to textured walls painted in semi gloss. Have two large bedrooms to do. Do you have any ideas for how to repair?
If you didn't damage the wall, remove the tape from that section on the ceiling, and just caulk it. Sometimes you let it dry, then caulk again but it works well.
What do you use for calking ? There are so many different brands and types.
Caulking is one of those things a lot of people are picky about, but not really for me. I find most work fine for what I do, but this one tends to be my favorite, because I like the fast dry type. amzn.to/2Ibrfq7
All good points, with one exception; don't ever use caulk to repair a bad, broken, or completely separated paper tape corner joint. That is a cheap cheat maneuver that you will regret when trying to fix again after the caulk dries, separates, and/or recedes back into the void.
Just go ahead and retape the joint and float it back out as necessary.
Do it once. Do it right. And You'll thank yourself later.
Hi thanks for the video. Where do you get that tape and plastic that you has taped the crown and draping to the floor?
Hello, you can usually get it locally at hardware stores, but if you want, you can order it off Amazon for a decent price at: amzn.to/2TXv7jT . Thanks, hope that helps.
Removing PC from my garage. Parts were fallen down anytime there was high humidity or condensation in garage. About finished one stall. If I wanted to reapply PC, has quality improve so it won’t flake off or is there a suitable primer
I would never Re install it
Really informative, thank you! what would you recommend for a make over of a brush swirl ceiling texture? My house is from late 50's and I've read some times the material can have asbestos and should not be scraped. (Would love to see you make a how to video)
tia easton check out this video and see if it relates. Skim Coating Drywall to Smooth out Walls, Hide old Texture and Fix defects. Part 2 ua-cam.com/video/F5W9YlRRHno/v-deo.html
Probably skim coat that ceiling, that's probably a plaster ceiling.
How much would it cost to have 4000 sq ft done
Thanks, Bruce Willis :))
After removal of popcorn..what's next step after repairs...I've primed the surface..then shot a knockdown primed again then paint...I can still see bright white tape lines?
Doug, all I ever do is spray texture over the raw drywall, then I apply a drywall primer from Lowe’s that cost $50 per 5 gallons, and one coat of Sherwin-Williams super paint and it comes out perfectly every time. My only guess is you are using a cheaper paint or a poor quality primer. Or you are putting it on to thin, or not letting it dry properly between coats, (Read the can for the re-coat time as it is important).
When you see those long recess joint lines in a ceiling are those caused by the sheet of drywall/nails have pulled slightly out of ceiling joist or is that from a ceiling joist that's slightly lower than the others that the drywall seems happened to fall on? I never get to see drywall/mud on a new home build so not sure if those are there on day 1 or do they happen over time.
If you can see them through paint, it was bad finish work
How do you remove popcorn ceiling that has been painted over several times? I’ve sprayed vinegar and warm water and it’s not coming off. I’ve done all the other ceilings in my house no problem but this one is not coming off.
Try scraping off some of the popcorn bumps opening up places for the water to penetrate. Scratching through the paint can help too. Use extra hot water and add Krud Kutter, a great cleaner that helps slightly. Soak it every 15-20 minutes, thoroughly, up to 6 times. It can take hours if it’s been painted several times. Keep using hot water.
Occasionally it’s not possible without damage but I’ve removed dozens of painted ceilings.
as a newbie laborer thank you for this lol
I bought a house last year built in 1979. Someone removed a load bearing wall. The attic has been reinforced but now I don't know whether to scrap the popcorn off and do a solid patch or just replace all the ceiling drywall. What would your suggestion be?
Scrape and repair
Hey brother, i got a question off topic from the video. But wanted to see if you knew the answer from your experience. What is the best tool for the job in cutting metal?
I have an angle grinder, jigsaw with metal blade, and sawzall with a metal blade. I also see things like those hand held bandsaw for cutting metal.
Let's say for example, cutting angle iron... Which tool would be safest and fastest?
Hi Michael, I actually have decent experience in that. I've used the horizontal bandsaws, grinders with cutoff wheel, etc, but my favorite especially for angle iron is this Dewalt Metal Chopsaw. I own this as I wrote a book about Biodiesel Called Do it Yourself Guide to Biodiesel which is on Amazon, and I manufactured the equipment for 6 years and often needed to cut heavy metal. So I bought this saw - amzn.to/2MYXNTq and it works great. No sparks, clean cuts and plenty of power. BUT, don't rush it, which I've seen some people do. It cuts quite fast, but it's not a wood chopsaw, even though they look the same. And you can lock the metal in the built in clamp, so it's safe. I cut a lot with it and never had a problem.
Hope that helps, and be sure to click that link, then if you decide to get it, within 24 hours of clicking the link, we'll make a little, and you pay the same as normal. Or, put it in your cart, pay up to 90 days later, and we earn a little.
Thanks, Guy
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY ah! Got it. Hope i dont take too much of your time with these questions, but which tools will do the closest in performance to that chop saw? Just so i can understand the ranking system of metal cutting tools....
I assume by what you said, the metal chop saw is best for metal cutting, and then i assume a metal cutting hand bandsaw would be 2nd in line? Then the angle grinder... Then the recip saw, and lastly being the jigsaw?
Not sure I could rank them, other than the chopsaw being the best for heavier materials. There's also the abrasive chopsaw like this one- amzn.to/2WSJeWk which is more affordable, but shoots sparks everywhere, so lots of grinding debris, and more burrs. And I haven't used a handheld bandsaw, but they should work well for material clamped down while cutting. I'd saw next would be a recip saw with a bi-metal blade, then a jigsaw for medium thin, but rigid material, and then the angle grinder.
Hello and thanks for your helpful videos..we just scraped off our popcorn ceiling and it didn’t come off as easy and smooth as in your videos even though we sprayed with lots of water..after scraping, it kind of looks like knockdown right now. I scraped and scraped but it doesn’t look smooth. I plan on sanding and then dusting well before painting. Any tips or ideas? By the way, we had a company come and give an estimate for removal and he said it wasn’t even popcorn ceiling it is made from perlite which I never heard and can’t find any information on. I’m ok with not having a smooth texture but want to make sure before painting I do all the right things. Thank you for any suggestions!
You might have to skim coat it then texture it. I have videos on skim coating.
How about if you are taking off popcorn ceiling from a concrete ceiling. Underneath is not drywall it is spackle.. It leaves a lot of tiny holes and when I trying to put primer on it first...it bubble not adhering..very frustrating.
Check out this video and see if that helps-- ua-cam.com/video/S8omX9yZm6g/v-deo.html
What about asbestos? A man in my building removed the popcorn and a building inspector found out and he got a ten thousand dollar fine. This is in Honolulu.
For finding rough mud. Use a light next to the wall. Go clockwise and counter clockwise it will show high and low spots. A taper that does multi million dollar houses should me that. And it will make the imperfections jump out even for someone not knowing what to look for. Things that show up after the paint is applied.
I show that in videos now and then but it’s hard to show on camera. I’ve been doing that for a long time and I think any good finisher will do that some, especially if your eyes aren’t perfect vision.
But I did just order $700 worth of studio lights last night and one of them will have a 4 foot tall narrow diffuser that may allow me to shine it across the sheet rock and show things better on video.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY saw one of those videos. It works!
At what point do you caulk the edge where the wall meets the ceiling if you feel the tape has been cut? Before skim coating the ceiling or after?
After will give you the smoothest result
Great videos. Do any DIY folks ever do the popcorn removal and hire a pro to repair and paint? Is that a workable arrangement?
Yes
Thanks for the video! I just have one question. How do I best remove a popcorn ceiling when it’s been painted over with an oil paint? Thanks in advance for your reply!
Good question! You likely can't remove it. Once in awhile they scrape off due to being primed or painted under the popcorn, but most likely you have to cover it with new drywall, or skim coat it like I've done many times. Here's some videos on that- ua-cam.com/play/PLCrazHylAOEmwdiWbPXir9EiERjjj-6_x.html
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY that's what I have. took your advice and bought a Wen to knock it down first.
Can I skimmed mud over painted popcorn ceiling? I am planning to prime over it for better adherence. Is that a good idea? Not sure if it contains asbestos but my house is from the 70s so most likely it has it.
Yes, search for my video on Skim Coating over Popcorn ceilings. Yes, prime if not painted. I'd test it first instead as many 70s homes don't have asbestos and scraping it off is way easier and costs less.
Great info. thanks! so just covering popcorn with shiplap or boards shouldn't hurt anything right? plus no scrapping needed
covering popcorn up is fine as long as your ceiling can handle whatever weight you use but most products are pretty light. i’m curious as to what part of Colorado you are in? I am in Grand Junction. And does tune addicted refer to cars or?
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thank you. I'm in Fort Collins. Tune addicted refers to music
I'll scrape a popcorn ceiling if it was painted once with flat paint or less. I use a Hudson sprayer and soak it with water first and use a broad knife. Then patch where needed prime with Zinxer B.I.N and paint with SherwinWilliams CHB ultra flat paint.
Hello! Just finished scraping and I was hoping i could just spray some orange peel over it and be done. Since its covering one texture with another, I'm assuming that would be ok right? Hopefully you see this. Love the content. It's been been a blessing for my wife and I who just bought our first home
Look up my video on sanding after Popcorn removal
Newbie here. I watch your video after I already scrapped off dry popcorn ceiling with scraper. I have two questions first question is could I wet the existing surface and scrape it off like you do in the video still? Second question, how do you feel bigger gaps in between sheet rocks after removing the mobile home strips?
You can wet scrape it at any time. search my channel for pre-filling, and then type my channel name after it and you will find how to fill the gaps
Thank you for this video. My ceilings are the easy kind, just popcorn coat and not painted. My question is what do you do with the drywall tape at the seam? It's gummy. Should I sand it, use a sharp razor or edger to get it off and/ or apply more tape/compound before we paint?
This video only showed why you should never just scrape and paint. My other video should Answer your other questions better- Removing Popcorn Texture? You Need to Watch This first! ua-cam.com/video/IkqCj0wFzwU/v-deo.html
Could we scrap the popcorn then skim coat it with joint compound, and then paint it? Would that be safe to do?
Watch this- ua-cam.com/video/SY-mHkvM2P8/v-deo.html
Hey I scraped my popcorn ceiling and what was left was a woodlike base instead of drywall will skim coating it work and if I do decide to paint it will the paint just get absorbed into the wood base?
Please help me
thank you😭
I can't say without seeing what you have.
I think I’ll just leave it and wait for it to come back in style. Lol great video
Lol. I think you might be waiting a long long time. Thanks
I believe your right but I’m willing to wait. I scraped that crap (LOL) off my mothers ceiling and it’s a lot of work if you do it right.
And you are so right. Most people have no idea how much work it is until they try it. At least if you do it right. So I get really annoyed when I see people commenting about how easy it is. Just spray some water on it with a spray bottle and scrape it off and paint it. LOL
Great video! I have a question, just bought 24 year old home that has sprayed texture that looks like 36 grit pebbles/very course sand finish. It's so rough that if you bump bare skin against it it could draw blood! Whole house ceilings, walls, garage, bathroom virtually everything was sprayed with this texture. Any idea what I can do with it? I am very handy with drywall but have never dealt with this before! Thank you!
You can usually skim coat over it. Check out the videos below-
ua-cam.com/video/N2RSDsYbA7Y/v-deo.html

Thank you for your speedy reply! Have a blessed day Sir!
To all the drywall people out there, No-matter how crappy the DIY turn out, you guys are like Picasso when it comes to covering up all the imperfections!
Got confused by title, thought you were saying NEVER scrape popcorn ceilings, do _____(this)___ instead.
After watching the video I think you're saying that IF you scrape it, the ceiling still won't be ready to paint (and look good), you'll normally also need to sand and texture to get it looking nice. Otherwise thanks for the great info, appreciate ya!
Wow, wish u did my ceiling before. All they did was remove the popcorn ceiling and then paint the concrete ceiling without sanding, priming or plastering it. They just paint it and it look horrible with bumps, and u see all the screws and etc from the ceiling.
Sadly a lot do that.
