I think the Marksman revolver is really cool because of how it embodied the impractically practical creativity that drives this game's combat. It'd be more "straightforward" to just shoot someone, but shooting someone with a coin is so extra that it somehow becomes _more effective._ And exploring how far you can push this simple yet ridiculous mechanic is Ultrakill at its core, and the coins are perfectly representative of that.
Imo it's not exactly impractical, it still follows the same idea as the default revolver (trade time before shooting hitscan), but the reward is weak spot damage instead of increased damage + piercing.
@@burneraccount7831 it's impractical in the sense of "why go through the trouble of shooting a coin so the bullet reflects into an enemy, when you could just aim at someone directly and shoot them"
It's not just extra stilish, but Hakita did put care into making the coins worthwhile, not only by style. but with mechanical reasons too. The fact the coins alway throw out in a predictable arc means that there are situations whee hitting the coin is easier that hitting some enemies, the raw damage increase they offer. Anyone who has played Half Life knows that the Gravity Gun is the most iconic weapon from that game. Its obtained early on, and is good for dealing with low-level threats. It doesn't require ammo, which makes it a constant fallback. Its hardly weak if you use something like sawblades with it. There's an achievement for clearing an entire section of the game with just the gravity gun, and another one for clearing the entire game with it (you can also use the crowbar for that one though), proving that its viable throughout the entire game. At the end, you get an upgrade to the gravity gun that lets you tear through the final area.
Some of my most fond Half Life 2 memories come from using the gravity gun. Like the time in Nova Prospekt where I was using a metal table as a shield and one of the soldiers threw a grenade at me but the table caught it, so I launched the whole table at the squad and killed one guy with it while the grenade flew out and took the rest of them out. Or the time I was playing deathmatch and me and another player were legit having a dodgeball match throwing a filing cabinet back and forth at eachother until I made a perfect catch as he threw it at me then sent it flying back right through his face. Or when I'd use it to suicide bomb people by throwing a grenade at my feet, picking it up with the gravity gun then sprinting straight at someone and taking them with you.
the Trope of shooting the coin and reflecting bullets is definitely much older than ultrakill, but the completeness of the interactions it has and the alignment with the thematic of maximum style just makes it perfect.
the early game + late game thing is what I love about ultrakill. You're never just done with a weapon. You rarely go a minute without using most if not all of your arsenal. They're all so interconnected and work in just the best ways to make their spot in your weaponry all the more valuable.
As a huge calamity fan and huge ULTRAKILL fan I love to see people use examples like calamity’s “Midas prime” weapon and things like ULTRAKILLS Marksman revolver

But yeah def the best weapon in ultrakill once you figure it out. Ps. Did you know Ultrakill was not the first game with a "coin gun" although it is the first to have all the advanced combo tech.
Supergiant Games is amazing at this. Bastion’s Cael Hammer, Pyre’s Book of Rites, Hades’ Infernal Arms and, of course, Transistor’s Transistor, all tell the story almost as much as any other character in the game. Hell, two of them literally tell the story!
I think the marksman revolver can be best simply described by that one scene in Forrest Gump where Bubba is listing all the different ways of preparing and making shrimp. I wouldn't really call it much of an early game weapon. Actually, I think I and most people who have played this game probably didn't use the marksman all that much in the beginning. Of course, there are exceptions, but have you noticed how every time a streamer picks up this game, they barely use it? I know my first playthrough consisted of mostly projectile boosting with the green shotgun. But that's fine. The Marksman revolver _should_ be accessible from the early game. The Ultrakill pistol is the best designed pistol I have ever experienced. Most pistols (Especially doom 2016 *COUGH COUGH* ) are basically pea shooters and feel unsatisfying to use, basically a backup for the main weapons. But in Ultrakill it feels so smooth and clean, and with the style mechanic it's like the perfect side grade, especially with the Alt revolver. And don't get me started on coins. What's going on at the beginning of the video? Starting around 0:24, there's a bunch of what are obviously weapons from ultrakill, but that's obviously not ultrakill
i love ultrakill's marksman, its so satisfying to be able to finally shoot the coins myself instead of it being a automatic combo or a animation of another attack, thank you hakita
Fun fact about the ultrakill revolver: The reason it doesn’t have to be reloaded is because it fires -raw kinetic energy- highly charged flakes of metal, the chamber being the generator used to charge its shots.
you probably confused it with something else it doesnt reload cause it uses tiny metal flecks as ammo (also it would take a week of firing to empy out an revolver) and they get propelled using electricity
I think the best and most obvious reason why the marksman revolver is so iconic and best represents ULTRAKILL as a whole is the blend of style with substance. ULTRAKILL is about clearing out rooms of enemies quickly, effectively, and stylishly. And, honestly, I can't really imagine anything more flashy than ricocheting a bullet off of a coin to land a headshot. The fact that it lands a headshot, every time, without fail, and the flashy nature of the weapon, perfectly encapsulates everything this game represents. The fact you can also ricochet other hitscan weapons off the coins also keeps the weapon relevant throughout the game. Thus, that is the reason I truly think the Marksman revolver is the perfect pick to represent this game.
Hakita understands one very important thing about gamedev: if reallism goes against fun, it must be cut out. Entire game functions on a dream logic, from being able to punch your own shotgun shots to make them stronger, to rocketlauncher not doing any damage if you don't hit a target, everything is weird but fun to play around.
"That's right the power to throw coins" - Max0r Also kinda sad to see 416 being forgotten (not really that forgotten because some national armies still use it) it is in fact also iconic ones despite uncommon to see In every tactical shooter or fps games.
I think my favorite part of the Marksman Revolver is the fact that the coin still functions as a coin. Toss it at the Ferryman to skip the boss fight, throw it in the fountain for a secret.
This is the first I've heard of this weapon so how _iconic_ can it be. I get what you're saying, this is the weapon that defines the game, and it's a pretty resent game so it doesn't have nostalgia or a massive selection of sequels to fuel it's notoriety. Perhaps it's just me living under a rock and not knowing what ultra kill is, or using a skewed definition of the word "iconic," but to me an iconic weapon is the gravity gun from from half life. I don't know jack about half life, but I know about the gravity gun and why it's great. To me calling something iconic means if some one only knows one thing about an IP that's what it is. My dad doesn't even know if spider-man is a DC or Marvel character, but he at least knows that Batman is DC and iron-man is Marvel because they're just that iconic.
ultrakill's biggest strength to me is the way all your weapons can combo together, and the marksman revolver is iconic because it represents that aspect of the game perfectly, being one of the most versatile weapons for comboing with others.
A little addition to your final point. I would also say the marksman it's self is a perfect representation of the philosophy behind Ultrakill's gameplay. Shooting coins out the air is hardly efficient or practical in the slightest but it is VERY stylish. The revolver in all it's glory is a reminder that this is a game about styling on you enemies.
At the end of the video I was like do most games have not so iconic iconic weapons? The feeling I got is that an iconic weapon is something heavily associated with the game in every way and not just a starter weapon. It must be the weapon of the game
Wiz8's bloodlust is obtainable the moment mid-game begins, gets largely outclassed by most other weapons later for many classes, but is one of the most well-known swords of the game.
I think it should also be touched on that the coin mechanic in of itself represents ULTRAKILL more than just it's usefulness with tech. It also represents ULTRAKILL's gameplay as a whole. The fact that you're tossing a coin as a core mechanic in of itself is unique, much like how ULTRAKILL encourages you to use each and every weapon in a rather unique way in order to optimize your score and killing efficiency. Using the coin to get kills is a stylish act, and ULTRAKILL actively encourages stylishness with it's Devil May Cry-esque combo system by rewarding you more points for killing things in unconventional and flashy ways. Finally, like you touched on, the fact the coins have so much tech hidden within them encourages skillful play, a trait that's shared across every other mechanic in the game, and especially with the secret Prime Soul bosses and how they put your skills to the test.
I've noticed that a small number of people may have missed the overall picture in regards to what the topic of today is, but I don't blame them since I wrongly assumed it would've been inferred after completing the video.
I love the style of the video and the editing is immaculate
if only the titanium rail gun bounced off the midas prime's coins, I'd love to railcoin moonlord
truly one of the weapons of all time
6:24 "Make Link consistently left-handed! You cowards!" (spoken in Mr. Plinkett voice)
fantastic video mate, really high quality script and editing for a relatively small channel, love it.
I remember when I first played this games demo, I got the marksman and I instantly fell in love. Such a cool and fun weapon.
this is the most video essay to ever video essay
The number one weapon to effectively teach, in Max0r’s words, a *Smith* *&* *Lesson*
Good Lord, this is an amazing video, maybe its just cause I'm a sucker for ultrakill but honestly good job.
ultrakill's biggest strength to me is the way all your weapons can combo together, and the marksman revolver is iconic because it represents that aspect of the game perfectly, being one of the most versatile weapons for comboing with others.
That was the most stylish chargeback i ever saw
When you're arguing with an ultrakill player and they start throwing quarters into the air:
A little addition to your final point. I would also say the marksman it's self is a perfect representation of the philosophy behind Ultrakill's gameplay. Shooting coins out the air is hardly efficient or practical in the slightest but it is VERY stylish. The revolver in all it's glory is a reminder that this is a game about styling on you enemies.
"YOU CALL SHOOTING A COIN A MARTIAL ART"
You just made me buffer irl for a second seeing a ultrakill railgun in doom on that footage
At the end of the video I was like do most games have not so iconic iconic weapons? The feeling I got is that an iconic weapon is something heavily associated with the game in every way and not just a starter weapon. It must be the weapon of the game
pump action shotgun and revolver are the two most iconic weapons.
One is widely famous on wild west genre, the other in zombie movies.
"We will be talking about the marksman"
**shows the peircer in the thumbnail**
Wiz8's bloodlust is obtainable the moment mid-game begins, gets largely outclassed by most other weapons later for many classes, but is one of the most well-known swords of the game.
ultrakill weapons in doom is gold
i cannot for the life of me make enemies hit my coins, how do you do it so consistently?!?!
Lotsa practice hahaha
Long and short range. The shotgun is just as iconic as hand-cannons
I did a triple take when you pulled out the ULTRAKILL shotgun in Super Gore Nest
Underrated youtuber
That TLDR summerizes it perfectly:
Any reference weapon featured in calamity is one of the most iconic weapons... looking at you Murasama
why are there so many calamity comments
why are you so underrated
That is the most title you ever titled in a video title ever.
0:50 read me like a ducking book
this is the most weapon to ever weapon in all of weapons
If ultrakill were a pvp game it would be chaos
I'm listening to this while doing a ranged Calamity playthrough and that ending bit caught me way off-guard
Congratulations this is the one video that got me into ultrakill
ultrakill weapon models in doom eternal got my brain freaking out though
