Yes there is. There is a lever you push up on from underneath that then engages a latch on the cover. It ensures the cover doesn’t open during transport.
Good question. I was wondering the same before I first used it. So I just used it at a gathering from 11-4. The first canister was used up in an hour and a half on med-high for the lunch rush. The second one lasted the rest of the day on low, occasionally off, but was empty at the end. So I’d say 2.5-3 hours
