Thanks for going through all the trouble to size all that luggage. People must have been looking at you and saying "I think she overpacked" LOL. It is really helpful.
Thank you for doing a live testing for us, your video is going to make choosing a new carry-on so much easier for a lot of people out there! Last year me and my family traveled internationally for the first time in years and we had to buy a carry-on for everyone. I did my research (and wasted so much of my time!): I watched videos, I read REVIEWS. I finally bought four Samsonite Freeform carry-ons just to find out months later (when I couldn't return them anymore) that they don't have the right measurements for a standard carry-on so they won't fit in any of the sizers at the airport. I was soooo mad! I had two options: risk going to the airport and having to check our carry-ons because they were too big or buying AGAIN another set of carry-ons. I figured that the second option was the least stressful one so I ordered four Delsey Helium Aero 19" just to be on the safe side and yeah, they are small. Anyway I'm now a proud owner of eight carry-ons, four of them completely useless!
Interestingly I have been seeing a lot of people selling carry on luggage - now I know why as so many types don’t fit in the sizer We already have some and now will need to buy new ones 😂
Love your videos Aly :) Especially love that you are a fellow Canadian, and that you include the Amazon links for Canada. Great videos, great content and well done. Cheers!
Thank you for doing it as a Canadian 🇨🇦. I actually was going to shop for luggage today and this video really helped me . I never knew WestJet was strict with carry on luggage
Great video, I’ve travelled a lot with a 2 wheel bag the last 8 years and think they’re the only way to go for maximum useful space and durability with the 2 wheels
THANK YOU!!! This is exactly the type of video I was looking for! I just purchased a new Monos Carry-On and was going to return it after realizing it is 1/2" longer than approved for some international flights I have coming up on Air Canada and KLM. Seeing it easily slip into the Air Canada bag sizer set my mind at ease! Which is great because the bag is beautiful! :)
I've been scared to buy a monos for this very same reason! I'm scared of that 1/2 inch difference, but it was great to see how it fit for Ally! ....still scared to make the purchase though, lol !
Aly, thanks for making this video. Watched before and had to come back because traveling on United Airlines soon and wanted to confirm details. Love your content!
Thanks for including Canadian airlines! And so glad to know I’m not the only crazy one about making sure it fits in the sizers. Also I have good experience with heys Airlite for its lightness and size for air canada. Would love to hear your opinion
That was incredible! VERY practical and helpful! I dont care what they advertise as the size or what my measurements may be, if it dont fit in their sizers, i'm up a creek! So thank you!!!
In my last flight, the airline had all passengers at the kiosk put their wheeled carryon through the sizer. Mine fit but they still asked if i wanted to check in for free. I said no. I was thinking too that those sizers are smaller than the posted dimensions. When i boarded the airplane, i saw that the reason they wanted as many passengers as they could to check-in their carryon. The staff used at least 4 rows of overhead bins to store their supplies (ie. Plastic cups, napkins, cutlery etc.) And that's excluding the overhead binS they use for the safety demonstration stuff.
Thank you for this video. It was exactly what I was looking for since I’m traveling with Air Canada for the first time and was confused by the carryon size restrictions. The case I have will fit.
Can you do a video for the “ Personal “ bag please. I have seen many very unsatisfied travellers being told their personal is too large. Especially on European airlines.
Just check each airlines. In Europe, it's mostly Ryan air and wizz air for budget airlines. I always buy personal item ticket and just fine for 5 days away. But the key is you need to wash your clothes. That's all.
We just returned from Milan with a layover in Mtl. We use Air Canada carry ons that have a certificate of 'Carry On Approved'.... The lady at the gate approached us about using the bag sizer as they were trying to get people to check some of the carry ons.... She was actually a little rude stating that the attached label stating 'Carry On Approved' meant nothing and she was quite annoyed when I pointed out the labels. She didn't end up measuring the bags but it still left a very bad taste in my mouth, especially after a few delays and long layover. We only travel carry on and bought 'Air Canada brand approved carry ons so that we would not need to deal with hassles. Might have me reconsidering the Airline we fly with in the future!
Air Canada is lacklustre for sure. They're usually rude, and I swear a good chunk of the employees are looking to pick fights with passengers. I try to avoid them. But Westjet hasn't been that great recently either. It's all about making the shareholder happy, not about the consumer.
“Airline approved” is a stupid tax on people not used to traveling. Airlines can change their policy at will and without prior notice. Plane type can also change without prior notice not to mention airlines give crew discretion on gate checking luggages. If the lady at the gate says the bins are full so they are gate checking or it’s for plane balancing reason, do you think the approved label will help you?
@@Peizxcv Well she reluctantly backed off after I mentioned the labels. It had nothing to do with balancing - most people don't want to check their baggage because of the continued problems of lost luggage. I have never checked a bag in all my years of flying. She was just looking for gullible passengers. Actually the flight was even held at the gate an extra 40 minutes so that friends of one of the pilots could make the flight and the stewards even cleared out one of the overhead equipment areas for their 'carry ons'.... What I didn't mention is that we had equipment with lithium batteries that would not fit in our personal bags in our carry ons that couldn't go into belly of the plane....
@@bernie.b The point is if they want to check your bag there is nothing you can really do; It’s bag checked or kicked off the flight. Nothing you can do about special privileges either, they can kick you off the plane to give way for airline employees
But watch out for the little CRJ and Q400 where majority of roller bags have to be put in the hold. Almost all flights in and out of my city are in these tiny regional jets, so I use a 36L hiking backpack which fits into any regional jet overhead, squishes into 1/2 size spaces between other folks roller bags, and even under the seat in a pinch.
I love your videos, they are so helpful! - I read on reddit that some AC flights are now using those machines to weigh and laser the size, and the tolerance is much less than it is in those metal sizers - I would be curious what passes in those machines
Thank you! I have been frustrated finding a bag that meets the posted dimensions. Glad to know some fit the Air Canada sizers. But annoying that there’s a size discrepancy.
Love my Delsey underseat bag that is light, maneuverable and just the right size for minimalist travel. Must have taken it on over 10 overseas trips now. To Poland in 2 weeks. 🇵🇱 🇦🇺
I love joy Rick Steves’ Backdoor backpack carryon. It fits perfectly on tight carryon airlines (made to fit smaller European airlines) and it’s only $79 USD. It ships anywhere. My carryon spinner broke when I flew to Portugal (2016] and I decided no wheels are better on the cobbled streets that are everywhere in the country, and I have used this bag ever since. It’s extremely lightweight and has traveled many, many miles/kilometres over the past 7 years.
Thanks for such a thorough video on this! I have a 40L backpack style carry-on similar to the TomToc but it has slightly more height . However, being a backpack style, I think it will fit fine even for WestJet.
Where some of these would fail is the gate agent that may be on duty and whether they do the sizing or just watch you size it. It isn't uncommon in Toronto Pearson airport to have an agent have everyone size their bag before entering security. Some give it a thumbs down if there is any struggle to get wheels or sides in. The agent you asked mush have been feeling generous that day. But I so agree with minimizing all the other 'stuff' you are carrying aboard to look compliant.
Never knew about the Dakine bag. The price seems affordable, it's not as heavy and it looks pretty durable, plus the size is right. I think I found my bag, Thanks!
I also rate bag by how they handle my personal item. It has to sit on top with no slipping, and when waiting for a flight, it can not fall over because it lets the personal item lean.
The max size is 22x14x9 most of these bags are slightly bigger in one dimension. What am I missing are the airlines slack and allow that extra 1/2 inch? All the models I look at are also slightly bigger one dimension or another, I don't want to be over and need to check it in.
I’m Australian so our limits are strict, so ours are 56cm(height) x36cm(width) x 23cm (depth) and usually 7kg sometimes 10kg limit carry on size. Otherwise the checked bags are usually included with the airfare 👍
Do you know if your Monos would pass an electronic sizer? I've heard airports are starting to use them and the 22" spec is making me nervous about buying one as a Canadian, even seeing it fit in the sizers in this video! Thanks :)
Thank you so much. Very helpul. Funny enough when AirTransat asked me to place my TRAVELPRO Carry-on in their bag sizer box just before embarking, the agent asked me to check the bag at no charge. I thought I was within limits. I suspect that bag sizer was a bit smaller at the departure gate than the one located at the main check-in.😮
Hi @alysmalls. Thanks for sharing this video. Quick question - Is the Travel Maxlite Pro 5 that is seen in the video the 21" carry-on or the 20" compact carry-on? I only ask because the Amazon link goes to the 21" carry-on, which is 23" rather than the compact version at 22". Maybe a mix-up given Travel Pro makes so many variations of the same bag. Much appreciated!
Great video. I have a carry on that is 23 x 14 x9 including 4 wheels. I have been using this for quite a few years and never had any issues at check-in or fitting in overhead bins. We are from Texas and primarily travel domestic, Caribbean and Central America. I like this bag because it has a protected pocket for laptop and don't need extra laptop case. We are going to Grenada in May ( American Airlines ) and are concerned about sizing on American ( 22x14x9) . Since i am going with my partner we planned to take only one carry on. Checking the carry on would be a disaster since i would not have another option to carry the computer. I could take a softside Briggs and Riley brief case designed for carrying computers as well but trying to minimize the luggage count. Are airlines getting that picky these days that is would be a problem? Your experience on this would be appreciated.
Air transat is the one I have the most trouble with! They have reduced the bag allowance and apparently my 22 inch suitcase needs to be checked! In the past I was able to carryon without problem. :(
Great video. We're duffle bag carry-on people as I want to be mobile at all times as wheels and cobblestones may not mix.... Currently using MEC's FastTrack bag that is no longer available. Tomtoc option looks good.
We are heading to Europe tomorrow with Lufthansa and were shocked at their luggage rules. Carry on max 18lbs and smaller. Personal bags can also only be 4" thick. I ended up buying an it luggage carry on at 4lbs.
I’m replacing my TravelPro because it keeps falling forward and after my trip, I’m done. Purchased a Tutto which is not well known, but a great carryon!
You really have to hold your tongue right to get them in the sizer for Air Canada. For sure great info Aly, thanks for the effort! And your videographer!
Monos/Away are great because they also fit on regional jets. I have tried but looks like the Level 8 and TomToc will as well. I have mixed results with B&R and Tumi in terms of getting it to fit in the cage/box.
Do you by anychance know if the Wrangler 20" carry on will fit for United? Its 21.5"L x 9.5"W x 14.5"H so its slighly bigger. Im not close to an airport so i can't check if it will fit until the day of my flight 🥲
I'm actually looking at the Level 8 Gibraltar and will be taking an Air Canada flight. The dimensions for the Gibraltar are all around larger than the required dimensions on Air Canada's website. Is there a bit of give in the luggage sizer? Loved your video!
For me the 2 wheels are the best by far as I travel the cobblestone streets in Europe and those hard/small 4 wheel designs just are not good for pulling on rough surfaces. Also prefer soft sided.
I haven't been on too many flights but I found only with low cost airlines like flair do they make people use the sizer before boarding when I flew to Thailand with air Canada they had the sizer off to the side and asked maybe 10 people to check if there carry on fit.
So that's the trick to the cages - wheels first? I have a Tumi and always seem to struggle with the cage while an Air Canada staff member watches me disapprovingly.
Thank you very much for the valuable information. I have a question about Air Canada. I own a carry-on bag that has a depth of 9.8 inches and looks similar to the mixi bag. Air Canada's policy states that the maximum depth is 9 inches. Is there a possibility that my bag will be measured before boarding, and that I may not be allowed to bring it on board?
I need to buy a few carryon suitcases on cyber Monday but none of these bags fit Air France! help! They say: The maximum dimensions of your hand baggage are: 55 x 35 x 25 cm/21.7 x 13.8 x 9.9 in. (including pockets, wheels, and handles)
Hi there! I really appreciate your videos that actually test the bags in airport sizers! After watching your videos I’ve decided to get the TravelPro Maxlite 5. However, is the version being tested there the Compact version or the regular version? The dimensions shown are of the Compact, but the name provided is the regular version. I would greatly appreciate some clarification. Thank you for your videos!
I don't fly often. I have a suitcase that meets dimensions except for the handle is about half an inch too high. Any thoughts if they will make me check it?
Great video! I'm trying to decide between the Dakine carry-on roller (42L) and the Travelpro Maxlite softside. While I care about durability, I care more about maximizing space since I'll be packing for 4 months at a time (digital nomad life with washer access!). I welcome any opinions. :)
Thank you sm for this video, it was very helpful!! You mentioned that you have flown with westjet a lot and I was wondering if westjet asks the passengers to put their hang luggage in the sizers to check whether it's within size?
Hello i'm trying to understand why online the bags say they are 20 inch but when you look and see they are more like 21 or 22 inch. Do travel flights to Europe allow for this extra 2 to 3 inches for the wheels????? Thanks❤
This is a great info vid. I'm still concerned my briggs and riley isn't going to fit the Icelandicair's 7.8 depth... my bag flattens to 9. Any thoughts?
Opted for cabinmax 30l aa invetween size eaayjet accrpt it as priority think but will have to pay extra on most airlines..will have that bag only..no more checking in at all. Trying to avoid being asked to checkin..where I go so will my bag...❤
Hello, Love your video! I'm trying to find the spreadsheet you have on your site with a list of all the bags that fit each airline carrier but I'm having trouble finding it. Where is it in your site?
Shoot! I have just started watching your channel, Aly, and in about the second video you featured the MIXI 20" bag, which I understood would fit in the overhead bin. As I'm traveling to London soon, I bought the bag immediately on Amazon, even in the same color, green. Now I come to find that the wheels don't fit in the thing, so now I'm worried I'll get in trouble. How much would I have to pay for this? If it's $20.00, that's ok, but if I have to pay $100.00, I'll be upset. Well, may be I'll just google this for a quick answer.
This applies to most planes, but not for something like a CRJ or De Havilland models. The overhead bins are small. Know what planes you will be flying before you get to the airport so you can get appropriately sized luggage if the plane's overhead or under seat is smaller. I just flew to New Orleans on a CRJ-900 and was asked to gate check an under the seat luggage where my plan was to put my backpack in the overhead and the luggage under the seat. There was plenty of room and I knew it. I did not want to be a Ken and argue to keep my luggage with me, so I gate checked knowing the overhead bins would be empty and the under seat was large.
Hi ! Thank you so much for your concise and thorough review! Do you have a recommendation for which suitcase and wheels work best in Europe with cobble stone roads? Secondly, I feel it's really important to have a bag that is at least slightly expandable. Also, we are looking for backpacks as well but we absolutely MUST have a waist belt! This backpack does not have one. Any advice on which ones would work for these needs? Thank you
Just picked up a Travelpro carry-on, but mine is the "international" size, which is a bit shorter. Seems like it would fit even better than the maxlite 5. Your sweatshirt is so cute! Where's it from, if you don't mind? Thanks for the vid.
Test the Cotopaxi 35L for carryon? It is 22x12x10. I watched the TomToc in your video, but I think it’s shorter. Our airline limit is 8kg so I actually cannot pack my Cotopaxi full because I’ll go overweight. Thanks for your video. I’ll go check the website.
Sometimes it's not about the bag being able to fit in the overhead bin, it's about limiting the number of bags coming into the aircraft cabin. Too many people opt-in to bring a carry-on bags these days instead of a checking the bag in, because of the convenience or/and not trusting the airline.
The most efficient option from the perspective of outside volume is a travel pack. Suitcases take up inefficient space with a handle and wheels that does not contribute to interior space. The funny thing about my travel pack is that gate agents don't even look at it. They are laser focused on my wife's wheeled luggage. Its comical.

Great comparison video! So glad that my new Monos carry on will have no issues in the sizers.
Wow. This presenter is really beautiful. Great information. Not painful to watch. SUBSCRIBED from Denmark
Truly enjoy your channel and content. This was a great video!
Thank you for doing this content! Very helpful for us traveler.
I suspect that bag sizer was a bit smaller at the departure gate than the one located at the main check-in.😮
Thank you for taking the time to do this
Great video. I’ll be getting the Level8 Roadrunner Pro. Thank you! ❤
THANK YOU for doing this! Could you do this with personal item bags as well? Thanks again! 👍
Yes, here is the video! ua-cam.com/video/hcfJ0HmxzXM/v-deo.htmlsi=CHFeHtB13nBAq5WY
It's the 21" and I got it from Amazon!
@@alysmalls Good to know. Thanks so much!
This was great…thank you👍🏾
Great video.
It's unfortunately 21 inches with Air Transat... hard to find !
Great video. We're duffle bag carry-on people as I want to be mobile at all times as wheels and cobblestones may not mix.... Currently using MEC's FastTrack bag that is no longer available. Tomtoc option looks good.
Thank you for the testing and the great 👍🏻 tips. Have a great weekend 😊
I always wanted to try the sizer but was afraid if my Level 8 didn’t fit an airline employee would call me out 😊 thx for doing this!!
We are heading to Europe tomorrow with Lufthansa and were shocked at their luggage rules. Carry on max 18lbs and smaller. Personal bags can also only be 4" thick. I ended up buying an it luggage carry on at 4lbs.
Thankyou for making this. I needed to know if the travelpro max lite 5 would fit in air canada carry on bins
I really did haha!
Monos/Away are great because they also fit on regional jets. I have tried but looks like the Level 8 and TomToc will as well. I have mixed results with B&R and Tumi in terms of getting it to fit in the cage/box.
Good to know, thank you!
Thanks for another useful video for planning a trip.
In Egypt there are carry ons that are 7$ and very good ones at 10$ I am amazed at the prices you are saying
Do you by anychance know if the Wrangler 20" carry on will fit for United? Its 21.5"L x 9.5"W x 14.5"H so its slighly bigger. Im not close to an airport so i can't check if it will fit until the day of my flight 🥲
Great information! Thank you.
Thanks for doing this. I have several of the level 8s so this was helpful.
Excellent review, many thanks!
So that's the trick to the cages - wheels first? I have a Tumi and always seem to struggle with the cage while an Air Canada staff member watches me disapprovingly.
Well, if the wheels stick out it means it goes over the allowed length. The rules state wheels and handles are part of the measurement.
Wow, this is actually very useful. Thanks!
This explains why I had to gate check my bag my last flight even though I triple checked the measurements before I went to the airport...
I assume you have seen the bags that airlines have allowed on plane for the past 15 years. Some take 75% of the overhead bin.
Hey! You mentioned that travel pro is 22*14*9. Do you have the compact carry on? Their usual one is 23*14.5*9.
have you tested if the osprey meridian 22 suitcase could fit in the carry-on bag?
Thank you.
Thank you so much. My English is the second language . I am has to move out the state, go to Airport first time alone, 65 years old.
Excellent comparison, thank you so much. Side question: Do you know of any physical stores in Canada that sell the Dakine? It's kind pricey on Amazon.
Aly thanks for the video. Can you confirm the travel pro you tried in this vid is 21”? I just bought one.
What about Icelandair?! Their dimensions are crazy! None of these options mentioned would "technically" fit according to their dimensions
Good plan!!
For international travel, is it standard for 9" x 14" x 22" bag size? thanks-
This applies to most planes, but not for something like a CRJ or De Havilland models.
Thank you
Thank you, outstanding job!
Just picked up a Travelpro carry-on, but mine is the "international" size, which is a bit shorter. Seems like it would fit even better than the maxlite 5. Your sweatshirt is so cute! Where's it from, if you don't mind? Thanks for the vid.
Yes, that one should fit even better! My sweatshirt is actually from Amazon! amzn.to/3KKjZ2y
Thanks for all your information 😊Can I ask where are your white sneakers 👟 from ?
Got them from Amazon! amzn.to/45RMOUE
Where do you pack the dog?
Thanks for testing all these! Do you have the mixi carry on video/ review on its own?
The most efficient option from the perspective of outside volume is a travel pack. Suitcases take up inefficient space with a handle and wheels that does not contribute to interior space.
The funny thing about my travel pack is that gate agents don't even look at it. They are laser focused on my wife's wheeled luggage. Its comical.
