- We decided to take things a step further from our last major DIY... we built our girls a self-growing pasture for them to graze on! Or in other terms, a hydroponic cage. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without the use of soil. We built ours to be able to have a constant flow of water going in one direction. A pump pushes water up one tube to the sprinkler PVC pipe on top, the water travels down the acrylic glass wall and onto the seed covered surface. It then travels into the gutter and back down a tube into the water source. Have you ever seen anything like this before? Let us know in the comments!

So here I am, after just finishing building a home for my little brothers piggies and I was thinking, “man, this home is heaven for a guinea pig”. It has two floors, an abundance of space and all the things a piggie loves.
Naturally, I sit down for a much deserved rest, pop on UA-cam, and this is the first video that pops up in my feed?!?!
Lol I guess I gotta get back to work and try building this now for the little piggies!

That was great. We have a little herd of four boars who love grass. My husband rotates them on the lawn. Has not been mown by any other method for twelve months.

Cool! An own pasture for your piggies indoor made in such a clever way! There's just one thing I would suggest to change: Perhaps a long plank as a walkway would work even better than stairs. Your Guinea pigs will grow old in a matter of some short years and won't be able to climb up and down the stairs anymore. It will be easier for them to reach the grass level with a ramp. Anyway, I think I'll suggest this idea to my husband and perhaps we will build one for our three piggies too. Thanks for this great idea. :-)
I definitely recommend that for older piggies :) I might do it 2-3 years later if I still have this set up. Who knows? I might just have an elevator by then! Thanks for watching, and that's a great recommendation with people with old guinea pigs.

I want to try this... I'm in no rush for another piggy though... My baby girl Trinity died last Thursday on Halloween, at just under 9 years old. She would have been 9 the Monday after Christmas. She was a huge part of the family. Its never gonna be the same without her... But I think this would be an amazing thing to do before I get another one.

I had a Guinea Pig that lived to 11 or so. The world record was 13 and it's name was Snowball, and albino. Still standing? Didn't check, from memory! I remember because it was so unusual and all of my pets lived a long time over the years. Fed him cherry tomatoes and strawberries and lettuce a lot. Gave him the pellets too, of course. But, we also let him out in the yard A LOT. So, I'd like to think the real food and outside time contributed to his long life.
Guinea Pigs are the best. Ridiculous, funny, animals.
You guys are the best guinea dads EVER, love all the talk the piggies do
Hydroponics. Don't forget to add liquid feed occasionally and add fresh water in the system to detox, after 6 months or so.

Hmm, don't know exactly, but probably as much as our IKEA cage. About $250? I think the acrylic was still the most expensive.

My family recently got guinea pigs and we switched from bedding to y’all’s fleece cover. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
Very clever.years ago I did a similar setup for my gerbils.i grew my own greens for them.you made those pets very happy.

First off Love the videos❤️ Secondly do you ever think you would do a limited edition fleece for like Christmas 🎄 Valentines Day Halloween 🎃 or something like that because I love to use your fleece for my cage it’s so easy to clean and my guineas love it. But I also like to decorate their cage sometimes to match the holiday and I would love if the pocket or something could match the holiday/season 😊 Thxs ❤️❤️❤️

I have over 10 guinea pigs which we let free roam in our large backyard, so we never really have to mow, and when you walk outside you can see a herd of guinea pigs running around. My sweet little cows ❤

I bought a big fleece liner for my cage from guineadad! I loved it and it was so cozy. The guinea pigs used it everyday!

This is a really cool idea. Great job! Reinventing animal enclosures to be pretty close to self sufficient. Almost like a terrarium for animals. Stirs up a lot of ideas.
Ive considered a pallet type arrangement to be brought inside, left for a couple days, then rotated out for another. Where we live my poor pigs wouldnt last an hour open to the sky; red shouldered hawks would eat them . My first thought is how do you keep this clean? Its gonna be full of poo in no time. What I ended up doing for now is going outside with a box, pulling up handfuls of grass and dumping it in their pen. Not a staple, but a treat. The freshest thing they eat. FYI the plague of overwatered southern lawns "dollar weed" is a favorite, and people can eat it too. Tastes like celery.

How truly wholesome! I don’t feel safe about putting my piggies out in the grass because we use weed killer and I don’t want it to hurt them. Definitely thinking about doing this for my boys!
