Purple is our best selling color for many years now here at our garden center in Fallbrook. I always feel so blessed that we have such mild winters, a 9 or 10 month bloom season. We use many of your purple selections for our hummingbird gardens. Thanks again from California
Gardening since I was a small child with my grandmother. Relatives passed away: grandparents and great aunts and uncles. Father and my mother recently. I've really got into gardening as a healing way to go through grief. Gardening is so healing!
This video is exactly what I was looking for! My husband passed from Pancreatic Cancer in January, 2020. I’m trying to build a flower bed with purple plants in honor of him as purple is the color of the Pancreatic Cancer ribbon. Wish me luck!
If you are in a climate where it will prosper, lavender is a fragrant choice. It does not want a lot of water, comes in many varieties, and will perfume the air.
You are very talented Wow 😂😳 so many things you do cooking your home design teaching. also teaching children how to love garden. God has made a beautiful 😍❤️ peace of himself in you , may God continue to bless you with good health long life and much smiles and your creativity..
My absolute favorite color!! Every year I mix lavenders, creamy whites and chartreuse green wherever I plant...the pots, the flower beds, etc. I use a lot of golden globe arborvitae as backdrops and borders, fill in with several varieties of white hydrangeas and then any beautiful purple perennial and annual I can find, and Allen, my purple vitex Shoal Creek plants are blooming!! Whohoooo! I put them in pots on the patio for summer and am starting to get butterflies! I filled in around the base of them with periwinkle petunias and purple salvia 🤓☺️and they are just gorgeous!! Scabiosa skin disease😂😂. That’s a good one! My Russian sage is growing like crazy and it is so easy to root new plants! I can’t wait to watch all these grow and bloom over the summer. Oh and yes, the catmint! I love, love the Walker’s Low and it is easy to propagate too! I put the catmint and Russian sage around the borders of my veggie gardens and....can you tell I’m excited about purple?!? 😉😉
I paint watercolors and love purple flowers....actually most all flowers, especially old fashioned cottage flowers. Flower gardening is a wonderful hobby💕. Thanks for your knowledge and creativity😊
I’m so jealous of the purple plant winners! Can this be my question for a win too??? Lol! Congratulations winners! Rock that purple plant passion!!! 💜💜💜
Allen - thank you. It really helps me when you sit down with so many examples of plants. I can jot down the names and look them up later. I love your walks through gardens too but this is easier when you just have them all right there! I think my new favorite is Russian Sage!
Wow!!, I must put a few Velvet Elvis's, Pin Cushions, and Artemisia... thanks for sharing, I just got inspired.. I've put a lot of emphasis on whites, pinks and blue perinials, but my house color is periwinkle..(I shocked my neighbors)... purples are my new theme for the season..
I love everything you do Mr smith. My mother loved you too. I live in an apartment can't grow anything here. Your gardens are absolutely beautiful. All my friends here love you too. Keep up the wonderful work ❤
I love....love...did I say love purple flowers? Good show! You are welcome about following you. I really like seeing what your able to do with your yards, farms etc
Hello I have enjoyed your shows I randomly find them and I will start watching and realize how fantastic you are at explaining telling talking about the subject that you're on I find you very very inspirational I love what you in the kitchen I love to watch you in decorating I love to watch you with your chicken it's just a fun time thank you for sharing your knowledge your design keep up the good work and thank you again
Just planted purple salvia out in front of my front porch. Have plans for more! Talked my sister in law into them at her house next door too! Purple power!!! Lol
I love your channel. I too am a painter, and I like to plant according to what I see in nature. I just planted my purple salvia, and beside it the light purple butterfly flower, among with dill, and cosmos
The Russian sage also has a nice aroma. Mexican sage blooms really nice after the second year, no fragrance. The purplish salvia seem to always get infested with bugs for me...nice video and informative
Couldn’t agree more about the salvias - May Night & Black & Blue With day lillies & lady’s mantle, rose campion & perennial geraniums- is one of the prettiest beds I have.
Love your show on utube! Especially love this one on Purple plants. I just gave my friend a Purple Elvis as she is an Elvis fan. Now I want one for my own garden! Thanks again! Jeanne
This is absolutely my favorite episode. I love all things purple! I'm a newby to your channel & I'm here to stay! Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift. 🪴🌻🦋⚘
Ive always been drawn to purple flowers. Im trying to introduce other colors, but my gardens are predominantly purple. Im only into our second year at our home and have been a crazy plant lady year round! Im really getting interested in propagating and wonder if you could do a video in more depth. Or feature a colder zone garden plan. And im definitely ordering those lilies!!! Thank you so much allen! Ive been a fan for years but am absolutley loving this channel!!
I just planted fence border of Salvia intermixed with Blue Butterfly Pincushion. Beautiful. I had not finished planting when the pollinators were buzzing about.
I'm watching these gorgeous flowers while its snowing here in ohio. I love purple and salvias, they also bring in the butterflies and honeybees like crazy!!! 🐝🦋🌼🌷🌺🌞
I’ve just found you on UA-cam and so glad I did. I live in St John’s Newfoundland in Canada. Zone 5b. I’ve been gardening all my life well 55years anyway. Please keep going I love your show 💜
Thank you I have Day Lilly’s in yellow and orange but didn’t know there were purple - have lavender and mini mixed petunias in a purple and white stripe and yellow center so pretty - loving purple
I love that I can now watch your programs "on demand" here on UA-cam. I live in Vermont and inherited at least 3 different types of peonies - I'm only guessing the varieties are: Sarah Bernhardt, Karl Rosenfield & Festiva Maxima - or very close to these varieties. I LOVE you suggestion of planting Russian sage to provide a screen to maximize the continued growth of the peony tubers...when should I plant Russian Sage, should I grow it from seed and when/can I divide it? Thank you for your time and if you can provide any answers I will cherish the interaction!
Thank you very much for this great presentation of several purple flowers and foliage plants. Can you please be adding a list of plant you mention under your videos and maybe on the screen while you talk about them? It would help a lot in case we would like to buy them. Thank you.
Chiming way late, like 10 months,,lol, but I love Mexican Heather. It’s a clumping, low growing plant that has a mass of tiny purple blooms that the bees LOVE. The green foliage is pretty too. I bought 4” pots and they ended up about 2 feet in diameter! Another is Mexican petunia. There’s two versions one is short and squatting and another version is taller and spiky. The Mexican Petunia can be invasive. They over winter here in the Houston area.
I blend purple dames rocket, purple cornflowers, and evening scented stock together for a nice fragrant garden. Adding sweet scabious, sweet sultan, and pink ragged robin helps extend the blooming time.
Love how you explain companion planting and design in the garden, landscape and containers by deconstructing plants, color and groupings. So helpful, I can't tell you. Plus you are so elegant in your presentations. I'm in southern Oregon zone 8a.
I just added salvia nemorosa in my garden. I am searching for more to add along with my salvia for more interesting groupings of plants. I am glad for this episode. Isn't it because purple is a royal color? Making every garden interesting. Regards from Texas
I just love how you do what you do! When I watch you on TV, I really appreciate how you put each item (in recipes or designing) name in large font. Thanks!
Thanks for a great informative program. I wanted to say that I grow many types of salvias. I am in zone 8B so we have HOT summers, the salvia is one of the few plants that continues to bloom until the fall frost. Of all of the types of salvia that I have the Henry Duelburg is by far the best bloomer even better than the Blue Black salvia. Thanks again for such an informative program.
Yeah 🎉 you talked about all the plants that grow beat in my sugar sand and the heat of south Texas. (San Antonio) Ha ha I never realized that I loved purple till you focused on them. Thank you so much for all the beauty you bring to each with each of your videos and the confidence you give to to try and keep trying ❤️💕
I love salvias. They get huge and I cut them down and they come back and are always loaded with flowers! They don’t like too much water as they will flop. I loved the salvia long plant the best. It stayed green almost year round for me in zone 8.
In Australia and almost tropical and have had success with Indigo spires Salvia. Love them . Have lost a lot probably due to humidity. Love your site by the way
Luv purple 💜and always👍have! I really don't have many purple plants though. I've had a purple oxalis forever and I love it! Another purple plant that I'm trying to contain is Mexican Petunia! Such a bright beautiful purple color. I recently put in castor bean, the one with large purple leaves! I've got elderberry which has purple berries in the fall and American beauty berry which also has purple berries in the fall. I used to have agapanthus but died off due to lack of sun. And another plant I have is purple 4 o'clock! I luv them all! 💜🌄🍇☂️
Have you ever planted Society Garlic flowers? I see it coming back again in Central Florida. Often used as a group or board plant. Pretty purple flowers.
Hello P. Allen Smith....love your channel and all the wonderful advice you give. At the end of this video, you talked about the purple fountain grass. I love this grass and planted them in the front of my house but then noticed oh so so many grasshoppers, the brown colored ones. I don't know why but they freak me out so I removed the fountain grasses. Grasshoppers, friend or foe? Appreciate your input.
There are so many gorgeous purple hues in nature ...and it is also associated with royalty. I'm in love with purple especially the deep vibrant hues. The first time I saw a Persian Shield plant I thought it was artificial, with that beautiful iridescence. Since then about I've planted it nearly every year except this year I couldn't seem to find it anywhere. Allen, I just wanted to tell you thank you for always mentioning your sponsors and providing the Gilbert H Wild & Sons website. I went there today and placed my First order but forgot to use the TV10 code for the 10 free daylilies! I got so wrapped up in placing my order that I totally forgot, I guess you win some and loose some LOL! Love your videos!
FYI about salvias, they are a major nectar source for migrating Monarch butterflies. If you love pollinators, please grow them - many colors available - many are hardy to Zone 4. If Allen doesn't mind, I would add the purples of butterfly bush specie and varieties and the newer purple Altheas - Rose of Sharon. Since this video a new variety, Purple Satin, has been released, still hard to find. I'm in Zone 5 and I'm buying one for the color and because Rose of Sharon is a hummingbird nectar source.
Purple is our best selling color for many years now here at our garden center in Fallbrook. I always feel so blessed that we have such mild winters, a

Lucky you 😍😍!! In Wisconsin, we only get 5 months 😍😍!!!
This video is exactly what I was looking for! My husband passed from Pancreatic Cancer in January, 2020. I’m trying to build a flower bed with purple plants in honor of him as purple is the color of the Pancreatic Cancer ribbon. Wish me luck!
What a lovely idea!
Sounds wonderful. 🌺
Butterfly. Bush. It's. A. Shrub
If you are in a climate where it will prosper, lavender is a fragrant choice. It does not want a lot of water, comes in many varieties, and will perfume the air.
The very best of luck
Lol I love how he kinda whispered about the peonies like he’s gossiping about them. 😂❤️
I think this is my favorite gardening episode. I love purples!

Oh no! Just when you get it all looking spectacular, the first Japanese Beetle comes to scope it out! Aaaaaagggghh!
Purple flowers so beautiful
This is why you are my favorite. Through the years you've taught me to love all blooms, colors and shapes.
I've learned so much from you. Purple is one of my favorite colors. The Midwest has lots of purple naturally. From violets to paper money.
U r right. Salvias just grow so easily. I see hummingbirds visiting my front garden sometimes🥰🙏🏽
I paint watercolors and love purple flowers....actually most all flowers, especially old fashioned cottage flowers. Flower gardening is a wonderful hobby💕. Thanks for your knowledge and creativity😊
