We kitbash & paint our own 80's Action Movie inspired Space Marine! | Duncan Rhodes| Warhammer 40K

- The 80's had arguably the greatest action movies ever made (Aliens, Predator, Die Hard, Commando, They Live to name but a few) and we love 'em! So we figured it would be fun to create an 80's Action Hero Space Marine inspired by some of our favourite action films from that decade. Cue Major Dutch McClane of the Void Predators from Death World Nakatomi! This bad a$$ Astartes believes that Xenos (Especially Tyranids) are a disease and he is the cure!
Converting miniatures is one of the most fun aspects of the wargaming and Warhammer hobby and is an amazing way to unleash your creativity and make something unique and in this tutorial we show you how to do just that! We also delve into our methods for creating a colour scheme and how to find inspiration for your theme.
This was a lot of fun to make and we reckon a Kill Team of these guys would be seriously bad a$$!

Get to da choppa!!!! Thanks for watching! We hope you enjoyed this one and if you did, please leave a comment letting us know you're favourite 80's action film. oh, Subscribe and leave a like too to help appease the chaotic Algorithm god! Have an amazing weekend one and all!
What an utterly joyous vid, excellent idea. Aliens and Predator are timeless in their enjoyment and entertainment. Off to watch the Hive Fleet Hadley's Hope vid....
"C'MON! CONVERT ME! DO IT! DO IT NOW! THE PARTS ARE RIGHT HERE! COME ON! DO IT!"
Amazing model, Duncan. This would make a very fun homebrew chapter.
Nice indeed
thats great lol
The idea of a 10 foot tall space marine with an equally huge f-off gun wearing cammo face paint so he wont be seen is just hilarious. 😂 Excellent work.
Camo paint cause it looks cool! 😎
Over the top to an extreme as it should be
Raven guard are silly enough, paint your Armour black and afix a silencer to a gun that shoots mini nukes
The Raptors Chapter would like to have a word with you.
Honestly the painting tutorials are the b side of this channel, the skits, jokes and production take first priority every time and I love it
Dutch McClane from Nakatomi. Thank you, it's a lovely homage to dear Bruce Willis who sadly isn't the person he used to be anymore.
Very sad indeed :-(
I don’t think any of us are the people we were 35 years ago.
@@johntailby74 He is reportedly unresponsive from dementia.

The commitment to the headband Duncan is commendable. Didn't stop smiling all the way through the video.
Imagine: diorama with norn emissary painted as alien queen VS. Morvenn vahl painted as Ripley 👀👀👀
That would be cool
Had thoughts of painting Deathleaper as a Xenomorph, not sure how to paint his cloak, though.
There are a lot of funny moments in this video. And I don’t know why, but somehow Duncan just casually wearing the headband for the whole video gets progressively funnier every time the camera cuts to him and completely tops them all.
This is amazing.
I can't wait for the re-release of warhammer fantasy and the fun we'll all have with the new / old kits :D
Me too 😁
I for one cannot wait to hopefully see Tamurkhan return, or some new Ogres perhaps
I feel like the conversion minis are more fun to watch than "standard" minis 😊
I agree
Always
HOLY COW!!! This is possibly the best Space Marine conversion/chapter creation I've ever seen, great job once again Duncan!!!
This is such a big win. Love the model, love the editing!
Thanks so much!
"I like this backpack, which is why I'm going to glue it on last" 😂
To survive a painting session, you have to become a painting session...
~ Rambo, probably ~
You want a painting session? I'll give you a painting session like you wouldn't believe!
Yup, that's a proper BFG for ya! I'd say you knocked this out of the park--looks like what would happen if Guile from "Street Fighter" was a Space Marine. The 80's references throughout were on point, too!
Amazing work. This is what the hobby's about having fun and making awesome stuff.
My fave is predator (still the best one). 80's and early 90's were golden age of awesome action movies.
This is so much fun. I always love conversions because they really help your get attached to your models. It's an extra step in really making them YOUR DUDES.
You can just feel the fun and love pouring off this video and miniature- bravo 👏🏻
Thank you so much 😀
Major Small Soldiers vibes for me, Major Chip Hazard reporting for duty! hahaha.
"What's the matter? The DRPA has you pushing too many brushes?"
My Flash Gitz' Snazzguns are smaller than these lads shootas. However, your kitbash is (as usual) absolutely magnificent!
Lovely conversion, '80s' action heroes were iconic, plus early WH40K 's characters were clearly inspired by them!
P.s perhaps pinning the head would be more sure, CA glue too often don't work well with GS.
"I like this backpack which is why I'm going to stick it on last" is definitely the best refence
Love this paint job and the whole feel of the marine, 80s nostalgia at its best. Truly amazing
Thank you
That looked like you had way too much fun with that intro. Loved the subtle “DRPA VHS Film” and other homages to 80s action films. 😅😅 some of my favourite 80s action movies were most of Arnold Swartzenagger’s plus a lot of the Sho Kosugi Ninja films.
Glad you enjoyed it!
i need a Diorama with this guy - and a complete 80´s army.......fantastic kitbash and paintjob
Long Tall Sally... I JUST got that, and it's awesome!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely badass!!!
These tutorials you do are top level and the banter is just the icing on the cake.
I mean it's the only way to be sure especially when we all ain't got time to bleed. Just paint.
I like the idea with the face camo.
So if he has to be extra sneaky he can simply remove his helm.
Thanks @Duncan this is exactly what I was looking for. I want my models to have that gritty Rogue Trader 1987 look from back when Space Marines were warrior-fanatic-psychos and not monastic knights.
This harkens me back to an old White Dwarf article, where they created a 'Movie marine' list they made way back when. As a casual, tongue in cheek joke, they rolled the rules for astartes back then up to 11 to represent a squad of marines that were an entire army unto themselves. All the stats were buffed up a few points across the board. They added 'rending' to EVERYTHING bolter related. The lascannon on the Razorback could shoot through multiple models at once. So hobbying up multiple 'Army of One' models always makes me smile. Hell, I try to kitbash deathwatch marines with this mindset.
Nice
Coming back to 40k after 5 years l. Im glad you are still doing all the painting stuff. Congrats for this channel its freaking awesome. Wish you the best and thanks for everything you do !
Needs a training montage of Duncan scaling mountains (or the nearest hill) and maybe downing the odd shandy as he gets ready for the challenge!
Aw man I loved this movie as a kid!
I honestly think if you just don’t use that ammo belt the launchers look a bit better.
love the new paint/palette cam angles, helps get a better idea how you mix and load brushes!
That is truly ridiculous... I love it! For your next trick Duncan, you should do a Kill Team based on all of the 80s & 90s action heroes, Expendables-style. I think that'd be hilarious!
I've just seen this on the site and found it again on YT. I HAD to leave a comment to express how fun this video was. I really enjoy your occasional, atypical thematic videos like this... especially when you fille them with memorable quotes like in this one! :D
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍👍👍
Pick a fav 80s action film?! It's impossible Duncan, please don't ask such things from me! Predator? Aliens? Roadhouse? It's too hard!
Great conversion though. I've gotten into swapping Escher ganger heads onto my Adepta Sororitis, and I've done as you've shown, only i found pinning the head and pushing the pin in (whilst the green stuff is soft) with superglu gives a fantastically secure connection.
Be nice 😉 such a great movie
“I’m here to chew ass and kick gum. And I’m all out of gum”
This is definitely the poster-model for the rule of cool.
Beyond awesome, as usual.
For anyone interested in Duncan's idea of a kill team from predator: check out mad robot miniatures. They have a set of heads for this. Plus others.
Favourite film is too hard but either Aliens or Terminator 2.
Somehow this has made me respect and want... just a tiny bit the desolation squad. Haha great work Duncan.
Fun project to watch. Have never kitbashed Warhammer, and it was neat to see you put this together.
Somebody just recommended this channel to me as a beginner to miniature painting, and this is the first video I’ve watched so far. Thoroughly enjoyed it and now subscribed. 😊
I say “beginner” as the last time I painted miniatures was way back in the early 90s when I attempted to paint my Hero Quest board game miniatures… which wasn’t a great first attempt! These were the days before miniature painting got more specialised with additions like contrast paints, washes, and oils. It looks a whole lot of fun today, but there’s more for me to learn. 😅
That's fantastic and thank you for the sub.. We have a full 15 part beginners course over at our Academy (www.duncanrhodes.com) if you are interested in checking that out 😊
"yaaarrgghhh, live with me if you want to come"
Ok, you've sold me. Im gonna paint my intercession killteam in this style now.
This was brilliant! Maybe some colonial marines style guard from Aliens? Tau backpacks would be a great kitbash piece for their shoulder lamps, and I have some Elysian lasgun carbines I could send you for a pulse rifle base.
One of my favourites from the 80s which no one has mentioned is Big Trouble Little China. 😊
Thank you for the 80's theme ! And remember, ridiculous can kill (others).
Love the 80's Ref's. Having been born in the late 80's I grew up with a lot of those films and the super hero films in the 90's. Could easily imagine a bunch of these guys, sent in to extract a Sister Hospitaller who's fallen fowl of a heretic cult and is being hunted by a stealthy Xeno, will they survive? Who knows.
Nobody catching the Commando references, but my 80’s ears perked right up. I’m going o go make some breakfast, probably some green berets.
Love it! Only thing I’d have changed is the knife from the reivers kit. They’re a bit larger and have a cool serrated detail.
LOVE the intro... As always an amazing tutorial!!! THX for your effort after allí these years🦾
It's our pleasure
Simply brilliant! 🌟
Duncan, you son of a *explosion sfx*, you've knocked it out the park again
Now this is the content i want from duncan! Fresh and original!
Yes it makes much more sense to put some camo grease paint on your face right below your bright red bandana while smoking a glowing cigar than it does to wear your already camo protective helmet.
Love the new format of showing the painting
As an Ancient who grew up in the 80's, this was right up my street. love the result and appreciated that you kept the headband on for the whole video :) And remember, If it bleeds...
Thanks, we're glad you enjoyed it
Love the Commando reference in the start, this is an excellent kitbash and paint job. Makes me want to make some of my own 80's marines 👌
This was awesome. I wasn’t sure when you started but the finished product was epic. Great theme. I picture this model in a futuristic version of the movie Commando
You know, couple of years ago I bought a set of resin heads that were inspired by action movies heroes, just on a whim. Guess it's time for the small force of Void Predators from Death World Nakatomi to arise!
All this video needs now is an Arnocorps soundtrack to make it more purefect right there, exactly.
A fantastic video, well done!
I can imagine this Void Predator marine telling some of his battle brothers and Catachans guardsmen "Get to the Thunderhawk, do it now!".
Very cool idea, great kit bash and paint job as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
I love the DRPA 80s retro series!
There was rules in a white dwarf a very long time ago called Hollywood marines, a squad of ten was practically a whole army.
Marine would go great with those old movie marine rules from one of the late 00s white dwarfs
Sweet, nicely built and painted
Thanks :-)
Those colours also would fit raptors successor chapter perfectly
Thank you very much, Duncan. It was fun and I loved it.
This is absolutely epic 😮
I can just see it he runs out of ammo then holds his hands up and in one swift motion while yelling sonic boom he crosses his arms and rends his enemies with an energy blast
I spat out a lung when you said "I'll be back"
Also very nice reference to Last Action Hero in the opening. That movie was fantastic
Awesome kitbash Duncan. Im tryna channel 80s action movies with my boarding actions and some great ideas
This is so cool!!! love the references! great work guys!
Thank, it was a blast and so much fun
Dont ever stop being you!! That was really cool and a lot of nostalgia from my youth!!
I might have to buy another Sly Marbo figure just for the head!!
Thanks for inspiring the grey matter again!! 😊😊
For me my all time 80’s favourite film hands down is Conan the Barbarian.
Oooh maybe thats what you could do next a Sigmar Conan 😮
Col. Hunk Mc Largehuge! He just needs backup in the form of Ernest Borgnine in a suped-up Landspeeder, and Caroline Munro as the Imperial Assassin with a thing for tight leather.
Nice job, Duncan. I like to see you do conversions from time to time. Pete the Wargamer has some Raptors in a very similar style.
Amazing! This was definitely a fun idea.
This was great fun! Thank you, Duncan.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Holly shit! It's Johnny Lawrence!!
Cobra Kai!
Inspired. Well done.
This was tons of fun, no joke! 😂
I'm not gonna lie, as cool as that is, I'm amazed you didn't give him bare arms to show off the _real_ guns!
😅
We considered it tbh
I've never clicked on a notification so fast
Right! You could lure me into an active warzone with the words ‘80s’ and ‘space marine’
Hell yeah!
Yippi kai yay muddy funster! Glad I got to stick around
I want to be that good. I want to. But man I dont have the time.
Excellent work as always.
I never noticed until now how much Sly's head looks like SF2 Guile. Sonic... BOOM!
Love this. Brilliant video.
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it
That’s the headband duncan used before he fought people in the carpark when he worked at gw
When Sly Marbo took the space marines power armour all the Tyranids run from the galaxy, the Necrons went back to sleep, the eye of terror closed and the Orks run after the Tyranids.
We dont know what happened to the Eldar and the Tau.
So In the year of the Emperor 120 M42 peace was achieved.
YES!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA - Sly Marbo
Awesome...!!
Love this!
This is DOPE AF!
What a fun video!
I always thought that the desolation squad looked like one of them cheap knock off toys with ridiculous guns emulating 80s action heros, ones youd find in on a sunday morning market somewhere with badly translated writing. Finally someone made an amazing use of that design cause this is perfect!
Great Conversion pity there is no full chapter of Space Marines of The Void Predators From Death World Of Naktaomi I think if ever a project like that was done it be the coolest custom chapter, Always wondered what a Space Marine and 80's Action Hero look like and now we have one Totaly Awesome job :)
This intro reminded me just how much I need to re-visit Kung Fury.
That must be the bandanna Duncan wore for all the fights in the GW car park....
