    On the B group/generation engines and some late N63 I believe, Valvetronic and Vanos is used as the "throttle" while the actual butterfly valve stays open, maintaining positive manifold pressure!

    Just got a recall (23V-707). VANOS Assembly Engine Bolts. Anyone have this work done? Is it the bolts that hold the assembly to engine? No warning lights so far on my 2010 Z4 3.0 but occasionally a whirring sound that I thought was loose belt. Car experiences a hesitation form stop light but not in sport mode. I'm thinking a loose or broken bolt has caused main gear to brush up against VANOS unit housing.

    I have an N55 135i that has started having these symptoms and I initially replaced the spark plugs, turned out they needed replacing but it didn't solve the issue. Looks like solenoids are next! I'm glad I watched the video because most of what I could find in the forums had me considering a full actuator and eccentric shaft replacement.

    However on a cold day or if she hasn't been run after a week. I start it up and it's missing fire in all cylinders... To fix I just switch her off, count to 5, start her up... And it's fixed?

    Hi, wanted to get your thoughts please! I'm trying to figure out the solution to flashing check engine light, drivetrain malfunction error and misfires on my 2013 328i n26 85k miles. Codes are 130304, 131401, 131808 pointing to VANOS issues on exhaust side. Car sat for 6 months. Changed oil, charged battery and engine started right up and ran smooth but soon started misfiring. The ex solenoid tests good with direct voltage so could it be the sensor? Also could bad plugs cause those codes? Had a leaking turbo oil return line and lots of exhaust smoke but that's getting fixed today at the dealer under recall. I'd hate to waste time and money on a Vanos actuator gear replacement only to discover that doesn't fix the misfires. Thanks for any ideas. (oh dealer wants to charge me $295 for a full diagnostic but not sure that's money well spent when I already have a decent bi-directional scanner.

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  6 місяців тому

      I'm guessing you have an issue with the solenoids, even though they're testing fine power wise its possible one is a bit clogged or gunked up. They are easy to replace so I'd recommend just getting a cheap replacement one, like URO and trying that. It could be a sensor issue but you'd probably notice more material symptoms than just some misfires if its the cam position sensor. If it's misfiring really bad then it could be. The last and probably least likely thing is it can be an issue with cam timing with the cam blocking rings but I'd say this isn't very likely. Also, I don't think it's this but this is worth looking at: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/SB-10053485-8362.pdf this is most common after a timing chain replacement

      @mascho22 6 місяців тому +1

      @@8020Media Ok, thanks. Dealer said they wanted to remove valve cover to inspect Vanos unit based on the fault codes so that's where I'll likely go if no change from a solenoid swap. I assume the software is updated since the SB you provided is from 2014 but will check if dealer can confirm if that was done. Actually drove the car today for the first time and a weird humming noise started coming from the engine. Removed the oil cap and it stopped. Definitely suction there. Now I know why someone drilled a hole in the oil cap as a workaround which I had covered up with a piece of tape. Time for a new valve cover. Cant just replace the PCV like on the N20.

      @@8020Media Hello again!! I pulled the valve cover and exhaust cam timing was way off like 15-20 deg! I had to loosen the central valve bolts to adjust and re-time it with the locking tool. When rotating the engine to check though I noticed the ex cam gear vanos unit jumps or skips a little bit but remains in time when I bring it back to TDC. The intake side does not do that! Suspecting it to be faulty, I bought a used ebay replacement gear (guaranteed working good they said) and installed it and it does the same exact thing. I will try swapping the central valve bolt but not sure that would matter. Would appreciated any advise here...Thanks!

      Ok that is my next step. But it so confusing. I found differen gap sizes on bimmer forum. When i pulled the spark plugs. It was gapped at 0.044 but they said its 0.032, 0.040. So i tried both, on 0.032 ti wouldn’t even run. On 0.040 it idled bad soni put it back to 0.044. All my coils are good tho but still misfiring. Could bad camshaft cam and exhaust caused misfire?

    Vanos is not like VTEC one bit, VTEC is variable cam lift almost, there's effectively a high and a low cam on the car, and the engine switches between a high lift camshaft and a low lift camshaft (even though both are on the same cam). Vtec isn't really anywhere else as far as I'm aware. Every brand has variable valve timing at this point, once again not the same as VTEC. Valvetronic is much more similar to VTEC, but then again, VTEC has been here since way before.

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  6 місяців тому +2

      I wasn't getting into the similarities and differences here, but yes they are somewhat different. VTEC literally stands for Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control. They all do the same shit, they just work differently. But I get your point
