Prodigy were huge UK 90s band, came about when everyone was going to underground raves and doing a lot of drugs, theyre legends. Watch 'Smack My Bitch Up', it'll surprise you
Prodigy was a british "electro" style band that was very successful in the 90s. In 2019 singer and frontman Keith Flint (the guy in this video) died and the band broke up
@@dubzer0649 Yeah... for me it was the transition from punk to techno, kinda the first electronical music that got me. I still think calling it a mix between both is a good fit. :)
They formed in 1990 and went on to become one of the biggest bands of the 90s, especially here in Europe. Initially, they were a rave band but with their second album they started incorporating guitars in some tracks, hip-hop beats in others, and basically invented their own unique sound. Their third album, which features Firestarter, came out in 1997 and topped the charts in over 20 countries including the US, while 6 out of their 7 albums (excluding the first one) topped the charts in the UK. They used to have 4 members during the 90s and they all briefly appear in this video. The blond guy with the sweater (Liam) is the one who produces all of their music, while the vocalist (Keith) was just a dancer for the first 5 years of the band and Firestarter was the first time he ever tried singing. Although Firestarter became a hit and topped the UK singles chart, he only featured as a vocalist on 4 of the 10 tracks on their third album. I would recommend reacting to Breathe, which was the single that followed Firestarter, as it also features the other vocalist in the band (Maxim), and is arguably their biggest hit. In 2000 the other dancer in the band (Leeroy) left and they remained a 3-piece band until 2019 when sadly Keith died. They stopped touring immediately, but the two remaining members are still working on some new music.
@@dubzer0649 One more thing - since you mentioned Rammstein in the video (which is one of my other favourite bands), it might be interesting to know that their keyboardist (Flake) is an admirer of The Prodigy and being quite familiar with both bands, I can definitely hear some influences in some of the electronic parts of Rammstein's music. They even sampled Firestarter in their song Benzin.
When I bought the Breathe single for this album, the guy behind the counter handed me a black cigarette lighter with the Prodigy ant image on the side. It was the Firestarter. The Prodigy is that blonde guy in the video, he's the DJ. The crazy dude and the guy with the white contacts in were brought in as dancers at their races, and eventually became singers.
@@dubzer0649 Definitely a re-up for this - KILLER trip-hop track! There's a LOT to explore in trip-hop, get ready for a hole... The next one you'll get recommended is Portishead - 'Glory Box', which uses the same sample as Tricky's song and was released in the same year, but they wrote/recorded the two songs without any knowledge of each other. One of those weird coincidences. It's also a killer track... [though I think I'm in the minority preferring 'Hell is Round the Corner' over 'Glory Box']
Musically speaking, The Prodigy are drum'n'bass. However, they are closer to the British punk wave of the 80s- The Sex Pistols, Joy Division. Them, Chemical Brothers, Faithless were part of a British resurgence in the 90s.
Have a look at German Industrial like Feindflug-Stukas im Visier or Schwermaschinenindustrie. Don't know if you know Cybergothic, it's related and also interesting like Grendel-Soilbleed or Phosgore-Warhead.
Cool to see your intro to the Prodigy. Picking out 'genre' and UK music doesn't really mix, coz usually its all mixed - especially int' 90s - dance/rave, hiphop, rock, R&B, indie, techno, psychedelia, jazz, D&B, folk, reggae, punk, ambient, soul etc etc all smashed together, sometimes with a bitta tongue in cheek dark naughtiness, for a loverly multicultural millennialist milieu
I'm a little late to the party watching your video 😂 Firestarter came out in 1996 and was the debut song from their 3rd Album, Fat of the Land and was the 3rd time the Prodigy had evolved and helped shape electronic dance music in the UK in the 90's. I'd definitely recommend listening to each album but if I had to pick one from each to demonstrate their evolution it would be... Out of Space from their first album Experience. Their second album, Music for the Jilted Generation is probably their most influential album so it's hard to recommend just one but I'll go with Their Law. Enjoy
They might have been before your time, but in 1997, the Prodigy were quite big. They gained success during the "electronica" dance wave of the mid to late 90's, and were considered to be one of the best live acts to see.
They are a band starting in 90’ from the Netherlands. Not so long ago one of the member’s committed a suicide, it was Keith Flint aka Kiff. They are kinda of underground drum&base techno oriented… even on MTV when they were on chard’s they were classified as just Prodigy… The commercial was something like this …MTV your music channel with 24/7 of rock, pop, heavy metal, rap, soul, r&b, the Prodigy and many more. Best of are Smack my bitch up Breathe No good Voodoo people Narayan Diesel power Poison Their law Out of space And some more, I guess….. But the best is the Smack my bitch up video original length uncensored, if your able to find it because it was later banned from MTV even though it was only allowed to be played after midnight and until 4 am. I think the video even got some kind of reward. And I think that it really is one of the best videos I ever saw, no matter the controversy, period.

This was brilliant!! Always gets me going in the morning
They're industrial techno group that are very influenced by hip hop beats.
Oh ok 👌 thanks for the information
The Prodigy always defined themselves as 'electronic punk' - and that kinda captures what they did.
Maxim was brought in as the MC of the band, but he did of course perform some dance moves.
this type of music is called the prodigy

As a tenured art professor, I feel that the artist known as Prodigy will be compared to Mozart or Tchaikovsky in the next 300 years.
