Maybe you could make a part 2 of this dash cam setting, while recording at night. Also test how long before the camera overheats and turns off, with the battery off the camera. With this setting, it will be a great idea to record long trips, day and night.

Can you confirm that it overwrites the "dash cam" video file it was recording in a previous drive whenever you start the car up again. Or does it start an additional file every time you start it up?
An additional file each drive, so with a 256gb card ($25), you would need to dip into the app every ten 30 minute drives to batch delete the files you don't need
Are you sure about this? My understanding is that it doesn't actually save anything unless you press the record button, then it saves whatever you've defined in settings. It says that in their blog: "When you're on the road and something capture-worthy happens, simply hit record and Loop Recording will save only the last defined period - saving you time and SD card space!"

Love this feature. but it has me wondering if the looping is hassle free. The gopro does have looping (not power on looping) but it only loops on each recording session so after some time you have to go in and delete files, whereas on my dashcam, it deletes the oldest file when the card files up.

I wonder how it will work in summer. I used Osmo Action 1 as a dashcam, but in sunny, hot days it overheated after 10-15 min of work inside car, being exposed to sun outside window, even when the temperature inside car was aprox. 22' C. @@DavidManningvlog
This is amazing! However, if I have a 30 minute drive to work every day, will it save the 30 minute file every time I shut the car off? Or will it start to overwrite the last drive I had if I never press the button? OR, does it just delete every drive I have when I turn it off if I never pressed the button and then start with a clean slate when I start my car back up? Does that make sense?
That totally makes sense, and you're exactly right, you would have a file from each drive. A quick drop into the app and you could clear out a bunch of them at once though👍
I bought a mini Comica mic (with Type C) and also a BOYA wireless mic with transmitter & receiver (Type C). Unfortunately, both mics don't work with the Ace Pro Type C (I used the Mic adaptor). It seems like the Ace Pro can only accept the 3.5mm jack. Have you tested your Ace Pro using Type C Mic connection? Would like to hear your feedback on this.

Great feature! I will use it to replace a DJI Action-2 that I use as a dash camera. I live in China so I have an Insta360-X2 and the DJI in my car at full display when parked. No theft issues at all for the last 2 years. I bought the Ace-Pro last week and I am impressed with its features & video quality. Is it possible to disable / enable the dash-cam mode quickly (a shortcut)? I use 2 action cameras (front/rear) on my bicycle as accident recorders. Actually, I was involved in a minor hit-and-run accident last year. I was able to identify the car based on my footage.
Great video, and thank you for sharing it. I love that suction cup... might need to pick one up. Cool concept. And the quality of the recorded video is way better than my current DC. Could be decent on a longer trip. I do feel like there are 2 things that are missing: * Most dash cams will automatically lock a looped file when an accident/shock is felt. A driver should never have to remember to hit save/stop/whatever to save the file. * Looping on a DC does not just save 1 file, but keeps saving file after file and overwrites the oldest file when needed. Does that happen here? Or does it only keep the last 30 minutes total once the power is removed? Thanks again.
The Ace-Pro is a fairly new toy for me. Can it powered by a USB cable without the internal battery being present? As in the 'pass-through' mode for GOPROs. Should I remove the battery door for better cooling?
GoPro Labs firmware technically has offered this feature since 2020 (and backward compatible to Hero7). However, I tried it with a Hero8 (bought an Ulanzi door to expose the USB-C port) on my *rear* window (makes it less conspicuous) and it was very unreliable. I suspect part of that was it was a 3 year old battery and the charging speed for the USB-C still wasn't faster than the drain when the camera was on. So you really should try using it for a week to see if it works as well in practice as it does in theory. For one thing, batteries degrade in hot weather and having your camera bake in the sun all day isn't great for the health of the battery and/or circuitry. That being said... the other features of the GoPro Labs are pretty convenient - you can program setting via QR code, and you can do things like schedule recording/timelapses to a specific time (e.g. start recording at 6AM for the sunrise, that way the battery is conserved in the hours before that time and you don't need to wake up early to turn it on).
Not sure if it works with GoPro Labs on the Hero 8, but on the Ace Pro you don't need the battery in the camera for this feature to work. So if you're looking to save your battery from the scorching heat of cars sitting in the sun, that's pretty solid!
@@DavidManningvlog Technically the GoPro works without the battery with the "turn on when powered via USB-C feature"... but if the USB power cutoff, the video can get corrupted because not all of the buffered recording was save on the SD the moment the power cut out. I doubt they added a capacitor (this is what some dashcams have instead of a battery to deal with the temperature) to the Ace Pro to avoid this so it depends on how graceful the Ace Pro handle sudden loss of power.

Great video - and possibly the one reason I will get off the fence and buy one of these cameras - but not for dashcam use! How long does it take for the camera to turn on and start recording?
Funny, I first bought my GoPro Hero 3 to be a better dash cam. It had looping and I gave it external power, with 5 minute loops. Got lots of good footage of bad drivers that way. Good to see the camera makers are finally back to that, LOL.
I wouldn't dare leave this visible in my car, the Bay Area blippers would smash and grab it in a heartbeat. I've had problems establishing and maintaining connection with the remote and can see this being a great alternative to get recordings to start though.

The more I research this action camera, the more comfortable I am with getting one. It doesn't seem to have all the bug issues that the GoPro's do.
I think I found a major flaw in using the ACE Pro as a dashcam. Once it gets sunny and over 50 degrees Fahrenheit it quickly overheats and shuts off. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, any workarounds?
That's something I changed with the mount after filming this video. Instead of dropping straight down, I pushed the camera forward on the Falcam mount so the lens was almost touching the windshield. Much less reflection in the shot!
Are you sure its saving 30min prior to pressing record button, and not recording continuosly 30min segments overwriting the oldest when space fills up, as its usual for such scenarios?
If you set it up exactly as I do in this video, when you turn your car on, the camera will automatically power on and begin recording without pressing any buttons👍
@@DavidManningvlog I can drive at slow speeds in town or come up on someone at a stop sign and see the plate numbers, but moving fast on a highway is not so good. Most of the time, I can't even make out the plate of someone passing me on the highway, much less a crash up ahead, which is usually what you would want it for, and I haven't seen any camera that works well for that purpose. Other than that, it does make a good dash cam. However, I worry about putting so many dash cam hours on the camera sensor. I don't know how many hours the sensor is rated for, and maybe it's not a big issue, but I've had a few phone cameras go out on me. Anyway, I sometimes use it as a dashcam or at least have it mounted and ready to turn on if needed. So far, I like this camera, but I am still testing it.
This functionally can also be accomplished with GoPro, but you need to install the "Labs" firmware and build a QR code. It's nice that AcePro has all of it baked right into the menus, right out of the box. For GoPros that have GPS, the Labs firmware also lets you create a speed trigger - for example, start recording when you hit 25mph.
@@DerGuteGeist24 LOL oh, no... I never said it was easy; just that it can be done. 🙂 After the initial pain/learning curve, it's not so bad. GoPro made a little-known app to build the QR codes and can save a whole "library" of various codes. Some settings stick between reboots. For example, my GoPro shows my contact info when it powers on, and changing the battery or memory card doesn't stop it. Still nice that Ace Pro has some advanced modes built-in from the factory.
Love the camera but will never buy it. The loop recording limitation is a deal-killer for me. Who thinks it's a good idea to never have history beyond 30 minutes into the past? Who thinks its a good idea to have to stop recording so you don't lose the video of the crash that just happened in front of you and there's no more recording until you can off-load the crash video you want to save? Yeah, I know, you can pull over and switch back to non-looping. But, why is so much maintenance required? It's loop recording done WRONG! He compares it to a DashCam. Well, a DashCam will make short clips until the card is filled and then go back and replace the oldest clip, then the next oldest clip... The history I get from my DashCam is DAYS in the past! NOT just the last 30 minutes! Plus, When I see a crash, I can press a button on my DashCam so to lock that video segment so that it's never over-written. My Sena 10C Evo helmet communicator for motorcycle riding did loop recording right. Just like the DashCam, it filled its card with three minute segments when plugged into shore power before going back days to start replacing the oldest recordings when the card is full.
So you're saying that a feature on your dashcam is that when you see a crash, you can press a button to lock that segment so it's not overwritten, but that on the Ace Pro it's a bug that you have to press the button to save the video? Agreed that this isn't the perfect dash cam, but for an 8K shooting action camera that's incredible in it's own right to ALSO be able to act as a dash cam is pretty sweet!
Not what I said. Ace Pro and Go Pro do segment lopping whereas, for example, my Sena 10c EVO helmet communicator with 0:04 a camera, does SPACE looping. Segment lopping only continuously rewrites a 30-minute segment. You’ll never have video history going back more than 30 minutes!. If you want to save that video you must stop it and start a new segment which interrupts the ride. My Sena 10c Evo has SPACE looping which means recording 3-minute recordings until it fills up your card and only then starts replacing older segments one at a time. You can ride for days and see your whole video history. Something happen you want to save? Just press a button and only that segment will be protected from being overwritten but you continue to ride and continue to record. Segment looping is truly a stupid idea on an action camera.

There's no way to record from the rear of the car. It still can't replace an actual dash cam.
You won't get readable plate numbers unless you're super close to the other vehicle.
From my footage, if you're within about 30ft, I can read a license plate
That's one expensive dash cam, nice feature..... better options
SHHHHHHHHHHH DJI adding induction charging to OSMO ACTION 5
This functionally can also be accomplished with GoPro, but you need to install the "Labs" firmware and build a QR code. It's nice that AcePro has all of it baked right into the menus, right out of the box.
For GoPros that have GPS, the Labs firmware also lets you create a speed trigger - for example, start recording when you hit 25mph.
lol Look Like a easy out of the box solution, noooooooot
@@DerGuteGeist24 LOL oh, no... I never said it was easy; just that it can be done. 🙂
After the initial pain/learning curve, it's not so bad. GoPro made a little-known app to build the QR codes and can save a whole "library" of various codes. Some settings stick between reboots. For example, my GoPro shows my contact info when it powers on, and changing the battery or memory card doesn't stop it.
Still nice that Ace Pro has some advanced modes built-in from the factory.
lets talk about magnetic mounts! LOL
No. Get Viofo A229 PRO for a dashcam
most expensive dash cam ever :)
TOTALLY! But, if you're a person that uses an action camera AND wants a dashcam, this can act as both and actually save you money👍
Why TF would anyone live in CA at this point?
you can put battry out of it and it will run + no overheating :D thank me later. @DavidManningvlog
