  • Tear down and visual inspection of the left side Final Drive from a 1953 Allis Chalmers tractor I am restoring.
    This tractor was purchased by my father in the early 80s. I grew up on this tractor working on 12 acres, mostly mowing but occasionally other projects. It was also the first vehicle I ever drove with a clutch and more than one cylinder. It has been sitting under a tin roof under the shade of oak trees since the mid 90s. (Ran When Parked) In north central Florida this is not a good thing. Thanks to cool nights and humid days with no sun on the tractor the iron would cool overnight and then moisture condensate on it with no way to dry until late in the day. This thing seemed like it was always wet. I bought a parts tractor that has been out in the weather all that time with much less rust but due to sentimental value I want to primarily use parts off this tractor where I can even if it involves more work.

    These videos are great! As you said in the comments, they might be boring to other people but surely not to us. I'm from Holland and we are restoring our '47 B. And I'm just watching your videos over and over again while doing it. They are just so extremely valuable! Thank you for making them.
    P.S. I'm also stuck on getting the axle shaft out.. just no movement at all.

      Glad I could help. Thanks for the comment. Removing The brake drum was the hardest part of the whole project.

    When you are dealing with stuff like that even the smallest thing that goes right is a triumph. I completely rebuilt/restored a early styled 39 B Deere down to almost the last nut and bolt and I wouldn't do it again. If I did after what this first one taught me the second one wouldn't take half as long.

    I got 3 off today in about 3 hrs with other stuff going on as well like finding things. I used a setup very similar to yours. I borrowed a strongback from work, and took my 1/2" all thread and put it through the holes and fished a couple of washers in behind the drum as well as a nut. My strongback was not set up for a forcing screw so I borrowed a portable powerboat sure of tonnage used as one was stubborn, but they all came out.

    I can not get the axle shaft to come out. It will not punch out of the bearing. Any tips?

      Can you tell if it is caught in the bull gear or is it the bearing.

    • @joemcdougall7605
      @joemcdougall7605 2 роки тому

      I would say both. I backed off the nut but the bull gear won't move on the shaft. But the bull gear does not apear to be up against the housing and the shaft still won't go through the bearing

      @@joemcdougall7605 Hi did you manage to get the shaft out? I'm doing my B right now, one side came out just like the video, but the other shaft won't move. Bearing stuck on and bull gear stuck on shaft spline. Have tried heating bearing up to no effect. Am considering drilling side of bearing and splitting it off the shaft with a chisel. I think once the bearing is removed I should be able to get the bull gear off with more play on the shaft.

    Where do you get the bearing washer and snap rings? I have a 1940 b I am working on

    • @JPN76
      @JPN76  3 роки тому +1

      The bearings might have a number on them that can be crossed or if you take them to a bearing supply house or Napa autoparts they can match it up by measurements. Snaprings are probably standard sizes but not sure where to order those. Maybe a bearing supply also? Lucky for me out of the 4 final drives I have to work with I only need seals to make two work. What bearings do you need? I'll see if mine have any obvious numbers that can cross.

      @@Vintagetractorrepair nice! I was just looking and my transmission has Timken and the final drives have Bower bearings. Ran a couple numbers off the bearings online and they are available almost everywhere if you search that way.

    What's the best way to get the hub nut off?

    • @JPN76
      @JPN76  2 роки тому

      I used a pipe wrench. Not sure if it's the best

    • @Meglev21

      There is a custom wrench for it. Runs around $70.

    My right final drive was all chewed up at the wheel

    • @JPN76
      @JPN76  3 роки тому

      One of the four I took apart had signs of that happening. The outer bearing was a replacement. Housing had rub marks and the bull gear was running at an angle at some point and wore a groove through the pan. Had JB weld all over it.

    If you get views for every time I watch these you will get a lot of views. I will go through and watch like comment now and when I can start tearing it apart more I will watch again and again and again that section(s) until I have it disassembled or know what I am doing.

    • @JPN76
      @JPN76  2 роки тому +1

      That's what these are for! I'm not a youtuber or really in it for the views. While I was researching things while planning this restoration I noticed there are not many videos really showing how to do it or close ups. So I figured I would try fix that. These may be boring to most people but if you are like me looking for info on what to expect while building this tractor these should be great. Many more to come I hope.
