On the bench that all was should only have taken an hour no more lol, and in my heyday I could have done it with cab and body on in five hours, by hand and no lifting gear. Ask me how I know lol
SO THOROUGH!!! Bravo Sir. Foreman and Wilms' UA-cam channel has a very engaging, frequently humorous and thorough rebuild of a Series 1, that Gavin was gifted. It had a V8 in it!!! All the best Maestro.
Adding extra precautions to a land rover is 'multiple points of failure'. Made me chuckle. A while ago I was helping a guy at work change his alternator in the carpark. He was struggling, lying under the car in a puddle, holding a maglite in his teeth. As I had to do once upon a time. I came home and got on with servicing the bike, in a warm and lit workshop. With a cuppa and radio4 playing. I realised how lucky I was.
Nice to see the old Stanley Yankee screwdriver coming out! I bought a set off eBay last year and made a rack for them. Very handy on occasion, and lovely bit of old school engineering. Keep er lit!
Excellent work, Max. Take a tip from me from my experience with Hot Rods. If pushing anything with open wheels, always push on the top of the tyre. You get a 2:1 advantage compared to pushing on the frame. I'm enjoying this build, Kermit really will be a minter after all this work. All the best, Mart in Solihull.
Look like your Somerset weather hasn't been much better than my North Devon weather. Wet and grey and more mud than I can ever remember. Another great video Max, thank you.
When I was still at infants school, we had a tire fitting bay about 2 doors away from our house... So whenever you get that air-spanner out the sound of it fills me with joy as I'm transported back to my innocent youth. This whole episode seems to be a strange 1970s nostalgia trip for me, 'cus, I mean, just look at the graphic design on that Corteco oil-seal box "it's cosmic man".
It's really coming together. I couldn't help but notice you've reroofed your house with solar panels. One of your first videos I watched was a tour of your homestead, it's come along way since then. Great to see the progress over the years and would be interested in seeing a updated tour of your place and the much improved power system. As someone that lives off grid with solar and battery bank primary system and generator backup I seem to never have enough power without running the generator more than I'd like.
Great video as usual. It is nice to see how calm you are in the face of adversity. I think I would have been throwing spanners and cursing quite a bit if this were me. Keep up the great work.
Project Kermit is unbelievably satisfying to watch. i rebuilt a 1975 Ford truck 20 years ago basically the same as this but i cut a lot of corners and didn't have much money to spend on it.
When I had my 2.5 n/a diesel rebuilt it practically pi$$ed oil from the crank seal. I couldn't park it in anyone's driveway because of the leakage. So, engine back out and new seal put in dry. No leaks, from there at least, since. Your video, and honesty, just saved a bunch of home mechanics a lot of aggravation.
there's a strange sort of relief you feel at the very moment you accept you did something wrong and decide to go back and get it right, regardless of how much effort will be involved. kind of a strange boost in self respect
Too add again :) I had to completely build my own exhaust manifold and down pipe, plus the rest of the exhaust disco 200tdi into left hand drive series 3 :)
Something you might want to consider whilst it's all accessible Max. Many years ago, I replaced the drum handbrake on my defender with an X-Brake cable operated disc. It's not cheap, around 250 quid, but it's one of the best mods I ever did. The drum inevitable fails and just isn't very good. The disc is a rock solid piece of kit that has never even needed adjusting and I swear it would hold the beast on the side of a cliff. Lovely to see your progress buddy.
For what it's worth, I'm fairly sure the original used a cable operated front brake from an old JCB. One of those might still be findable and then all you'd need would be a man who can fabricate brackets. Wonder where one of those could be found...🤔 ;)
@@maximusironthumper I've got one and they're not fantastic to be honest. Maybe worth it if you're constantly off roading and filling the drum with mud but they are far too expensive to buy or even to replace the pads.
It's amazing to think that sometime in the vaguely near future, I'll get to see Kermit in better condition than I remember him from my late teens/early twenties!
thank you max....... from wiltshire. Love your vids and the kermit restore is ace. I know nothing about cars and engines. i havent even got one : ).. cheers.
Rentable workshop space / garage would be nice. I'm glad I have very good neighbors, so I can do some mild fast blacksmithing and spray paint some parts in my balcony during winter :D
I have the Heystee disc brake conversion front and rear on my Series 3 and was able to keep the series brake pedal box by using the 8 inch servo also from Heystee. That servo will mate up to the Defender 110 master cylinder. It works great.
👍👌👏 2) 😱 Not green??? But I love nearly everything that is green. A Landrover simply has to be green! Best regards, luck and especially health to all of you.
Great job. Liking the old skool yankee screwdriver use. I'd love a workshop. Scratching around on the driveway under the vehicle isn't much fun especially this time of year. Looking forward to the next episode.
Hey Max, I enjoy your channel so much. You mentioned in this video you are limited in your knowledge about transfer cases. Well I also am subscribed to a channel called Brittanica Restoration, he is out in Canada. You may get a lot out of his videos. Highly recommend it. Cheers for now.
Just remembering back doing an automatic box change in a frankenstein landrover 110, gearbox out, everything done, or so we thought, the guy who was with me didn't scrape the old gasket off completely, everything reassembled, filled with oil and.............. Drip drip drip....... Box back out, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled correctly....... 16 hours of gearbox shenanigans, and still failed. Don't you just love landrover 😂😂
one of my friends has a motto ' i do it nice because i do it twice ' .. i often tell myself that phrase ( it never makes me fell any better about re-doing work )
Did the same thing with the crankshaft seal except I had it back in a running vehicle before realising its was leaking and had to strip back out from underneath, learning the hard way. Also got the second one from Turners been in 8 years now and still good.
Thank you for another wonderful video. I am delighted to see that your old 88 Landy is still trundling around! Incidentally, I am reckoning the new one will be blue. I can't decide if it will be Oxford blue (the colour of old coastguard landys) or marine blue (which my old 88 was!)
Great work! I would love to see some kind of proof that the microscopic amount of oil will continue to lead more of the oil out from the motor. That sounds unbelievable. But it does not matter, now you know that it is done right. Thanks for all the good videos.
It's coming along nicely Max, you do know that you can 'clock' the turbo into a position that's more suitable for you don't you? Just Google clocking turbo for ideas. I did this on my old Defender with an aftermarket turbo.
A workshop is an essential for work like this, a polytunnel is also good because you get really good light when working on such things as putting a Landrover together. This is, and all the other video's too, are all really good content. Also it is good to learn something new every day, even if it is just a crankshaft seal. Thanks for another great video. I wonder will you move the Landrover to the polytunnel for the finishing off of the body once it is on the chassis? Then you will still have the workshop free.
Did my series one Spice. Which was a slightly dark orange ( same colour as the large dinky series one model from the fifties. Did the wheels maroon/ red. Looked great.
We’ve all been there, thinking you’ve cracked on really well to find something not right… usually a spare bolt for me🤦♂. Kermit sis coming on well, definitely easier with a roof over you and a hoist! I worked on my first unimog in the mud and cold trying to fit parts in a field 🥶 thankfully I’ve a work shop now to keep the worst off!😁
Rather sucks about having to re-do the seals, but you know what they say, "We do it right cos we do it twice!", plus it got better parts anyway, so sorted out and should last longer... :D
You’ll sort the dip stick no bother. I ended up making up an outer out of two dipsticks and after a LOT of checking and rechecking made sur that the inner I was using gave me the correct dip level. Subsequently proved when I did an engine oil change and 7.5 l came to the right point after changing the filter too. 🎉
You're doing a great job. The right approach and humility too! Honestly, I'd watch you rewire a plug.
😅🤣😂
That wonderful feeling when you have spent four hours doing something to end up at the point you started.
On the bench that all was should only have taken an hour no more lol, and in my heyday I could have done it with cab and body on in five hours, by hand and no lifting gear. Ask me how I know lol
You're so right about having a big workshop. I had to give mine up when we moved house and I've never stopped going on about it!
Well done Max, good job you took the advice and followed up on the fix. Great entertainment, looking forward to the progress.
Great progress, that's going to be one very well sorted Series. Thanks for the shout out, appreciate it!
Progress! Excellent to see things coming together, despite setbacks.
SO THOROUGH!!! Bravo Sir. Foreman and Wilms' UA-cam channel has a very engaging, frequently humorous and thorough rebuild of a Series 1, that Gavin was gifted. It had a V8 in it!!! All the best Maestro.

Shouting "Gasket" then you realised. Then laughing at you doing a brilliant Benny Hill impression walking up the yard on time lapse! Great video Max

How is life in Solihull? I left Hall Green in 1990 to live in New Zealand. thatcher's Poll Tax was the final straw.
Look like your Somerset weather hasn't been much better than my North Devon weather. Wet and grey and more mud than I can ever remember. Another great video Max, thank you.
I would have made that exact same mistake! Thankful for your uploads to protect your viewers with series vehicles 🤙

‘and on that bombshell, cheerio!’ lol
Loving the old school glass meths bottle! Suspiciously like a hop flask...
Nice save, thanks John!
Great video as usual. It is nice to see how calm you are in the face of adversity. I think I would have been throwing spanners and cursing quite a bit if this were me. Keep up the great work.
It's all progress, good to see things being added
Nice work Max have a great 2023!
Thank you for showing us it's fun to own a landrover
Project Kermit is unbelievably satisfying to watch. i rebuilt a 1975 Ford truck 20 years ago basically the same as this but i cut a lot of corners and didn't have much money to spend on it.
Good to see solid progress, moving the thing was a nice bit of strongman training for you!
It's nice to see you n Robbie working together 🙂
Excellent work sir make sure you temporarily fit the rear tub in order to set the bulkhead up with the correct door gaps 👍
Now there’s a cliffhanger. I’m not mechanically minded, but I’m loving it.
Enjoyed every minute, haven't a clue on engines. but great to watch....take care
When I had my 2.5 n/a diesel rebuilt it practically pi$$ed oil from the crank seal. I couldn't park it in anyone's driveway because of the leakage. So, engine back out and new seal put in dry. Coming along nicely looking forward to the next installment

I was tempted but it's a lot more than that now!

A great video and a tidied workshop to match the tidy mind reflected in your other interesting videos. Happy New Year !
Great to see the progress. It has to be Marine Blue!
fantastic update
It's amazing to think that sometime in the vaguely near future, I'll get to see Kermit in better condition than I remember him from my late teens/early twenties!
And also in far better condition than when he left Solihull as a nipper!
Thanks for 6.40, the great leveler, we all have those moments.
Britannica Restorations Ltd is another great channel for all things LR... Mike's been dismantling a Series 3 gearbox over the last few episodes....
Another great vid Sir Maximus
Outstanding progress
Makes my day when seeing one of your videos is posted :)
We all make mistakes Max great video very interesting looking forward to seeing the next one 👍
Nice going Thumper. I like steam wally's old engine resto's too.
love the editing - torqued to spec :-) good job!
thank you max....... from wiltshire. Love your vids and the kermit restore is ace. I know nothing about cars and engines. i havent even got one : ).. cheers.
Awsome job 👏🏻
Nice work Max
Proper Job! And Keep it up matey, we're rooting for you and the project.
Great content Max!
Keep chipping away…
Great job 👍
Colour is a very personal choice
Mine is Blue
Mark Yorkshire England
Slowly Slowly easy does it. Your making great progress can't wait for next part👍👍
Good work Max, soon you will have two working Landrovers, a motorbike and a Zil!
A good mechanic
Just says ar well
Good job
You learn every day
Always enjoy, keep up the good work 👍
Love the videos they are very informative and interesting.

👍👌👏 2) 😱 Not green??? But I love nearly everything that is green. A Landrover simply has to be green!

Yes and after its installed it must be left a while to shrink into place before being filled with oil. Maybe it is just applicable to defenders.
one of my friends has a motto ' i do it nice because i do it twice ' .. i often tell myself that phrase ( it never makes me fell any better about re-doing work )
Is anyone else not getting notifications from this channel ? And yes I got them turned on 😂
A stitch in time saves nine. If it's not going to be green then I'm going with gray scale kamo or Longleat Zebra stripes.
Did the same thing with the crankshaft seal except I had it back in a running vehicle before realising its was leaking and had to strip back out from underneath, learning the hard way. Also got the second one from Turners been in 8 years now and still good.

Hard to believe but it's true, these type of seals must be installed dry or they'll leak right away.
Good Job
I have a great upgrade for cardboard floor sheet, I use 3 or 4 rubber floor mats from Halford, makes working on my car on the floor way easier
Milestone! Eager to see what color... sorry, colour you have chosen.
It's coming along nicely Max, you do know that you can 'clock' the turbo into a position that's more suitable for you don't you? Just Google clocking turbo for ideas. I did this on my old Defender with an aftermarket turbo.
Great progress. Jealous of the hoist.
Nice work Max proper job 👍 My guess is bulk head is gonna be black I think I spot a recurring theme with the paint scheme so far.

looks like a 200tdi defender exhaust may fit .they fit tight to the engine and follow the chassis rail .
Did my series one Spice. Which was a slightly dark orange ( same colour as the large dinky series one model from the fifties. Did the wheels maroon/ red. Looked great.

Definately paint the rocker cover to match your narrowboat bench grinder. Garanteed +5 hp
Looking forward to colour max
good luck
Jeez! Long time since I've seen someone using a "Yankee"
I think it's going to be blue!
Great x
Love the old meths bottle. when it goes clear you know its old. still cant drink it though.
Without mistakes one never improves.
GOD BLESS JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What sort of screwdriver did you press down to tighten the screws ?
It’s a Yankee screwdriver
BTW, lose the EGR valve. They just put crap in the inlet manifold.
Tidy 😀👍
Looking absolutely awesome. Talking of Awesome what every happened to Project Awesome ?
I've seen a Discovery in polished Alu and clearvarnish, her in HH Germany, it's look amasing.....
To quote another UA-camr: I enjoy my job so much I do it twice. 😀
