You’re epic, do you know that? 🤩 your way of showing us ink is just incredible. 🙏🏻 I really appreciate your soothing tones as I watch ink spilled all over the place! 😃 It’s fantastic to watch and listen to. Brilliant review with superb and thorough testing for us. Just so damn good. 👍🏻🙂
Thanks for a wonderfully thorough review. It is comforting to know that Tomoe River paper is not going to cease being produced (as was reported elsewhere). If anything, your review indicates that for users who are writing rather than drawing/sketching on the paper, the Successor Tomoe River paper is an improvement.
Thank you! That is a great way to put it--if you just write "normally", you will probably like this paper. It's the people who like all kinds of ink that are a little "out there" that may pick up on some of the subtle differences.
I'm dying of laughter! 🤣 So well-done. Thorough, inky, and humorous. This is vintage Inky Rocks. By the way, I was wondering about this new, oddly-named "Dude in a marker" ink at first...
I think a normal review of this new paper would have been a lot of writing but I feel like your tests were much more applicable. TR paper was so unique that these tests were far more revealing to me than a bunch of written lines. Plus the descriptions of the paper and writing feel were invaluable. Great video!! I'm sitting on a quite a stock pile of pre 2021 paper. In 2019 I bought a whole bunch b/c I loved the unique TR paper so much and I felt so ridiculous but now me and my 200 sheets are having a grand old time waiting to see what comes of TR paper in the future
hahaha! It 's always nice to have a "stockpile" of the good stuff! Make sure you keep it in a dry place. Though I like the new "S" paper (what they are calling it now), I have a whole shelf of the old stuff. Thanks Thomas.
Thoroughly enjoyed this & now ambivalent about rushing out to procure even more TRP as opposed to be previously buying as much as possible. Thanks very much again for a wonderful review
I usually love your videos. But I flat out adore this one, so witty, sly and useful all at once. If you ever heard of Danger Man (aka Secret Agent played by Patrick McGoohan) or Danger Mouse for that matter, you’ll understand how I can say you’re the Danger Woman of Fountain Pens.
Sterling stuff, Alesa- and what a terrific service you provide here, and always. 'Successor'-with its apparent drag-assy chalkiness concerns me (and reminds me of one of Cosmo Light Air's drawbacks) but, in other aspects, it does look promising. I note that you wisely withhold which of the two papers you personally prefer…for now, I’ll just say I remain glad to have a significant stash of the Good Old Stuff!
hahaha! I figure I will go with the future. I have a stash of the old stuff too, but this is good paper. I don't love CAL but I like it and use it. But with normal wettish inks with normal nibs, I prefer the new stuff as it's more crinkly and has slightly less how thru. Thanks so much!
The blackmail interlude made my day! Thank you so much for all that you sacrifice for your viewers ♥️ Amazing review. I use my Tomoe River notebooks for sketching, and you really helped settle my mind about the TR Successor. I can stop hoarding old TR now!
We have fun! I’m working on the Hobonichi vid now and they give a sample of the Sanzen TR they will be introducing next year. I feel like they “tweaked” it a bit and I’m liking it even more (not as draggy)
Fantastic 2022 Tomoe River paper review for us Fountain Pen Friendly folks. Scientific grade details and info, and reassuring that the new paper is not the disaster some expected. Can't wait to try it, after the confidence this review provides.
Thank you for your kind words. From what I understand, they still haven't sent out the paper to retailers yet (and I don't know if they have used up all their inventory from the buy out yet.) But at least we know that TR is still in the game!
Glad you found it useful. Another blogger asked me to test Tombow pens on blending. They don’t stay wet as long on the paper so two (or more) colors don’t blend as well.
Thanks for the detailed comparison! I thought you were going to say that Jacob and the source's Tako-yaki/octopus exchange was a sort of secret spy-code identification protocol. I guess that's what you were subtly hinting at.
This is exciting & it sounds like I'll like the new successor Tomoe River paper! I find myself low on TR for letter writing right now so maybe I'll wait on stocking up til the new paper is available! I started using more Pilot inks so I'm able to have success on more paper types. This video is a real help and I'm grateful you got this paper in your hands and could show it to us ... Thank You!!!
Hi Chris! Thank you so much for dropping by! I agree, using more straight forward inks allows you to use more papers. The older I get, the more I like the classics.
Excellent video! Thank you so much for "acquiring" the paper in order to show us. I am looking forward to finding an adequate replacement for TR paper. I have enough to several months, but am exploring all options for the future.
Ive enjoyed your many interesting explorations of pens and inks. I hadn’t appreciated your sleuthing talents. Thanks for the low down on the new paper.
Loved the blackmail interlude, and thank you so much for this thorough review, a real "tour de force" in comparing the two papers. Looking forward to the release to test it out.
I was sad to see Tomoe River disappear. I was lucky and got one of the last packs of A4 loose-leaf. I will make some books with it. Also found some little handmade notebooks of the 68gsm from Spain. Did a lot of research to find that. Not sure I will be trying the Successor. I will have to watch your videos on paper products before I decide.
I agree. The fountain pen niche is pretty small and it was a business decision. I believe there are packs of the Successor out now for sale. While not being exactly like the old TR paper, it's the closest to it compared to any other paper I have tried.
Another epic review. Love the inside joke between Jacob and you ;) As I told Jacob on his blog, the tactile aspect is very important to me. I'd already gathered from his review that the texture would be a little different. I haven't tried the "new" TR paper in the 52 gsm variant, but I have an Endless Recorder with new 68 gsm TR and although it's still very good paper, I really dislike how it feels, both to the touch and to write on. I miss the silky feel of the old TR. Hopefully this paper will be better than that and a bit closer to the old paper when it comes to the writing sensation.
I really don't know if it's closer to the "old" than the "new" was. There were some bad batches of the "new". It feels nice but there is the drag with dry and chromoshading inks. I think there will be a group of people that won't enjoy it, like with Cosmo Air Light.
Thank you! I love your videos and wish to see you on the videos also. I watched your video about fasting and it was great! Thank you very much for that. Have a most wonderful day! Blessings to all🖋
Thank you for the detailed review. I was laughing when you explained how you got the paper, I guess the code was takoyaki! I've procured enough Tomoe-river paper that it will last me for about 3-5 years. Listening to the sound and seeing the inks, it looks very promising.
Like different nibs and different inks, each paper kind of serves it's purposes. I prefer the Successor with normal nibs and normal ink. It's crinkly and has less show thru with normal writing. Where it's different is with dry and chromoshaders. We'll see how this falls out. Thanks so much!
Beautiful comparison! Thank you for all of the detail you gave - this is an amazing video! I'm looking forward to giving this 'newer' paper a try...what's the secret phrase to get some sheets??? :)
hahaha! Actually they had samples at the latest stationery show here and they said they may still change it if they get enough feedback. They don't see any going out till sometimes next year. Thanks Liz!
Fabulous as always! The Uber-geeky depth of th3 comparison makes my inky heart sing! And the hilarious tako -yaki trash talk made me spray my coffee all over this iPad…Bravo! All hail the shifty paper hunter and his stealthy tBlackmailing tracker 🤣🤣🤣
Curious about the different aspects of both papers - you find Successor to be smoother/plasticky while Fudefan finds more texture/tooth. At the same time, you find a drag and ink-absorption that sounds like CAL?
hahaha! Pen trash talk is the best! Actually, I meant the "hand feel" was more plastic-y and smooth. I think Fudefan found the writing to be slightly more feedbacky and I found the writing with dry or chromoshading inks to be "draggy" (a bit like CAL). Thanks so much as always Inky!
Great review thankyou, do keep track of those paper sneaks! And more farting around, as much as possible. I've been playing around with the Successor a bit since its release. My first impression was that it's a lot like the white 68gsm, but I guess it's a bit better than that, if you like your sheening as much as I do.
Yes, it probably just comes down to personal taste. No one paper can be all things for anyone. For me, it all comes down to how it feels when I write. Glad you like the new stuff. I do too! (And paper sneaks-they need to be locked in a room with cheap copier paper!)
I’ve been using TR paper for about 3 years. Don’t know if it’s the new, don’t know if it’s the old. I haven’t noticed any differences, haven’t had any problems. I prefer the 68 in general. Looks like I won’t even notice the change when the Successor paper comes out.
You're sooo awesome Alesa thank you for this very informative feature! This gives us the peace of mind that the successor isn't that different from the old TRP. Hugs and warmest regards from Manila - Love, Gema
Thanks so much Gema!💝I think there may be some people that won't like it but some that didn't like TR before may come around with the less show thru. I enjoyed it.
Heh, I loved a little joke about blackmail. But that aside, it was great to see successor in action. I'm so happy that tomoe will have a cooler version, double so if it indeed ghosts less! Thank you
I never tried Tomoe River Paper and got curious literally yesterday and then found out it changed and then it was being discontinued and then today I thought I'd do some more searching and I found out it was bought by someone else which led me here. It sounds like I'll like the new paper over the old paper.
Actually, you are lucky that you have not tried the old paper--you will go in without preconceived opinions and can just judge the paper on whether or not you like it!
I have not used this paper for regular writing purposes but discovered it is a near perfect weight match to bible paper. I got a small stash of cream A4 to cut down and use as insert note pages in my bible and I love how it doesn’t add any thickness like a normal page does. Good to see this paper is not gone for good, although I think I will go ahead and stock up on more sheets for bible use just so I have it.
I finally got around to watching this video. Thank you for all your efforts in obtaining this paper--haha! I'm hoping that this will become a new staple when it finally comes out in the US! I really had been having a hard time finding a good replacement for the old Tomoe River. I'm hoping the "smoother, more plastic feeling" holds true because I can live with that. But the increase in "feedback" makes me wonder.
Yeah, I think the feedback may be a problem for some people. If you use a lot of dry inks or chromoshaders it may feel a bit like CAL. Regular to wet inks would be hard to differentiate. Hope it works out for you!
Your telling of how Jacob got his samples and then yourself was very funny. I'm looking forward to trying out the new Sanzen TR Successor paper. I wonder how long it will be before we get to buy it in the UK?
Thanks so much Joanna! The company Sanzen is mailing out to the wholesalers at the end of the month. Then I guess companies need to work thru their old inventory and then make whatever they are going to make of the paper (like journals or paper pads) and then it will go out to the public. We were thinking (me, Jacob and the "source") that maybe early spring of 2022?
Amazing review and humor hahahaha, made my day ! You never disappoint with your amazing reviews . Btw may I ask if there are any news when/if any they will use this new paper the hobonichi
Thank you so much!💖I don't know at all. I had heard that Sanzen bought the rights and then all of a sudden I got these samples. I don't even know if they will be making a 68gsm.
Subtitles and translations are up!
Yes Richard put words to my thoughts here. Great video.

Hilarious “blackmail” interjection 😂-but as always, a thorough and interesting education 😁-thank you! Looks pretty good overall-
Actually, like it! Thank you!
Thank you for a serious service to the pen community. Your espionage skills match those of James Bond.
Thank you so much Joel! James Bond would eat my dust ahahaha! (I'm in a trash talking mood today...)

Yeah, "Dude in a Marker" sounds like some spy novel. Good thing I blew your paper cabal wide open--can't hide from me!
You really covered all the bases! I love how you snagged those sheets!! Inky Rocks Rocks!!!! Thank you for doing this review.
hahaha! It was actually rather mundane but we weren't allowed to nae our source so we came up with this convoluted story hahaha! Thanks so much!💝
I think a normal review of this new paper would have been a lot of writing but I feel like your tests were much more applicable. Excellent review. Thank you. And having met Jacob, the Spy story was hilarious!
I know! Jacob couldn't be a spy if he tried. He would just talk about paper and planners and kill the bad guy that way hahaha!
Oh my gosh, a great review as always - but loved that bit of humor at the beginning. The spy/blackmail routine had me so entertained!
hahaha! The "Paper Hunter" can bore you to death with all that paper talk--I had to have some fun!
I had just heard about it via the Inklings podcast. Including the sound it made. 😄 Really cool to actually be able to see it. Thankyou!
Glad you got something out of it! It will be interesting to see other reviews when the paper comes out.
THANK YOU sooooo much for this! Blackmail, cabal of paper sneaks, and Tako-yaki 😂 This is my favourite video for today 😆
hahaha! I thought cabal of paper sneaks was on the money funny. Thanks!

Alesa, thank you so much for the explaination from the older to newer Tomoe River Paper. This means alot to all of us!!! 💐📝
I’m late to the paper party but I’ve heard such great things about the TR paper that I’m looking forward to finding some.
I'm so glad you found this useful! It was so confusing with all the changes! Take care💝
This should be out sometimes early next year. It is going out to the wholesalers at the end of this month.
Just getting to this video. It’s such a joy to see how smart you are about testing these papers. Thank you! Lots of inky, papery fun!

I appreciate the review.
Thank you so much!💖
I really enjoyed your “undercover” investigation to get some of this paper! Thank you for sharing your insights!
Thanks Pamela! If was fun concocting this. Basically, we were not allowed to say how we got it!
Heh, I loved a little joke about blackmail. But that aside, it was great to see successor in action. I'm so happy that tomoe will have a cooler version, double so if it indeed ghosts less! Thank you
Blackmail was useful hahaha! I thought it was especially better with my normal writing, especially if it will be used in a journal.
You rock Duchess of Nibs! Thank you! 👍🏿
hahaha! I love that name! Thanks!
That's an awesome use of TR paper that I have not heard about before! In the event you don't stock up, I think the n TR Successor would fit the bill.
Fantastic video! Thank you for doing what had to be done to bring the info to the people. 😂
I was willing to Lie, Cheat and Steal. Blackmail was nothing...hahaha!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much!💝
Great review!
Thanks Eileen!💕
Oh yeah! Congratulations Your Inkiness Duchess of Nibs. 👏🍾
hahaha! I have it in the description on my "About" page!!
Thank you, that is exciting news indeed.
Great video! Thank you 😊 🙏
Thank you Valentina!💞
The Duchess of Nibs has spoken! Tomoe River 3.0 is good.. So let it be written; so let it be done. Selah!
The Duchess of Nibs! I love it! I'm going to put that in my channel description hahaha! Thanks so much!
wow, excellent review
Thank you very much!!

I have a feeling that I have a sample of that paper... It came to me a "zen" paper. I do look forward to using it
I'm a supporter--I like it!
