Hell yea! I use the old shoes as a "brace" to push the piston flat with the caliper.

Its not manatory .; I just pump the brakes with the car off about 30 times and whatever air thier is bubbles out in the resovoiur

Seriously, I have blue rubber gloves on also and the thumb is split from wrist to tip lol. Looks alit like yours .
That grove means rotors are in your forecast, they aren't expensive. I usually replace mine every few brake changes. It's cheaper now to replace the rotor than pay a shop to turn them. John sr buy new ones.
