Excellent- I have some quite bad rust patches on my mini and needs some work but thankfully I have a gasless mig welder and this video to help me in the summer- thank you very much for the superb video
Many thanks for including some quick notes at the bottom on what you're spraying and what you're doing! For instance, I didn't even realize "Weld through" primer is a type of primer I should be looking for if I am going to be welding on it. For me as the viewer, little details like make the video not only a satisfying compilation of hard work, but also a realistic and approachable tutorial I could follow. Again it's a little detail but I wanted to point it out so that you know some of us appreciate it and find it helpful!
Wish i still had my TR7 feel like I could learn so much watching you and definitely have the confidence to tackle the rust on it just makes you realise you don’t need to buy expensive bad fitting panels
It just occurred to me that the Mini is almost as old as old as me , and in all that time how many people have worked on these little rot boxes patching up the many holes but not many of theme did it as well as you do - excellent work
What happened work shop looks empty, have done a few minis, am aware of many replacements , did you forget to take off the steel that covers the lip between rear light and wheel arch , didn't realise how long ago this was
Hi :) our channel isnt about saving time or selling our services, its about Fabricating an repairing things yourself, the metal i used cost about £7 and i repaired 3 sections with it so a lot cheaper than 3 new pattern panels , we are showing the work and how to do it so it can be done to any car , maybe even a car that the panels are a fortune or even not obtainable :) thank you for your comment :)
Thank you Jason, it wont as long as everything is neutralised and protected after the work is done , iv been doing this for over 25 years and i see a lot of my old restored cars years later with no issues, its tried and tested :)
What better way to showcase the new shop, than by working on a Mina! To me, alongside a Moggie and a BSA , HRD/ Norton or AJS motorcycle, they are the most iconic and recognised British cars. Great work as usual and love the series. Would these patch repairs be prior to the British MOT inspection?
Thanks a lot for making these. Your techniques give me confidence on continuing to repair my 240z. Also what was the tool you used to grind down the welds @17:45?
Nice work on the a-panel! that bit right at the end on the rear arch, the seam cover has been left on, they have a small section of steel U shaped that pops over the two meeting flanges. I think you've created another flange on top of this finisher piece.
Lovely Jubbly video, great skills to have and use. Would it not be more economical to replace the whole quarter wing in labour and time than to cut and repair the panels which can be done easier.
I don’t think it’s easier to replace a rear quarter than to patch. Mainly, I would guess, the car’s corrosion doesn’t yet warrant the full panel replacement.
@@yorkshirecarrestoration we have a good welder at my work but I get the impression he doesn't like doing minis or doesn't want to do mine slightly cheaper for me, I used to be pretty good myself but I'm half blind in one eye after a snap on tool snapped in my face, should drag my mini out before the MG Metro turbo seizes up completely 🤔 a garage would be nice though 🤣
Great video. Thanks for making them. I'm restoring a mini currently so was useful to see how to do some of it. Out of interest do you use 0.6 or 0.8mm wire?
Hi Steve that’s good welding you make it look easy, can you get the same results with a flux core machine? As l suggested to Ryan stop kneeling on cold concrete floors you’ll suffer later only thinking of you guys , excellent bodywork & fabrication skills 👍
To make as clean a job, flux cored wire needs more skill. If you were underneath the car and the repair is away from peoples vision then OKs. If the repair is seen then the argon mix shield makes it easier to do a cleaner weld. Some mig welders will allow the fitting of the gas gear which will add say £120 to buy a bottle plus the first fill and a regulator. Some MIg welders are pure gasless and you cannot convert them to allow the gas bits.
@@royster3345 The few cars I have seen that were welded with a "Gasless MIG" after you as you say " you have ground then down", the welds did not get a smooth surface as there was areas that did not get a similar thickness of weld laid down. My welding efforts with Argon mix are less than wonderful, and I need all the help that I can get, That is why I say it is OK for unseen areas. I friend who had a gasless MIG for many years, for his 65th birthday I got him a Clarke 151 and all the gas kit. He loves it for inside the shed welding. Now if you are welding outside on a day with some wind a gas MIG you in reality are back with a gasless outfit as the Argon is blown away.
@@drumtochtyglen Thanks for the feedback. I'm currently on a welding course for DIY purposes, oxy done, currently at TIG stage, MIG to follow, with gas, keen to try after that gasless.
Got a question for a change gang if I wanted to buy replacement body panels for a 17 year old Mazda 6 (which I do) other than Mazda who would be the best people to speak to ?
Well done you for helping some poor misdirected person. Fixing up their old Mini so that they can perhaps sell it for something that doesn’t keep loosing them their fillings. You can tell I’m a fan, right?
The A panel has a wrap around closer to the a-post…can’t fault your fabrication, but you must admit that minis rust beyond that which is visible. I’d guarantee the top of that a panel to scuttle is rusty…as for the rear quarter and lower valance…tell me this mini is just a test bed for your skills.
Enjoying the videos, but why did you noy just make the repair section a little bigger to include the rusty hole you welded up!! plus on ther rear wheel arch you did not seam to spot the returned new section to the inner wing lip ??

Quality work as usual . Well done , learning lots from the channel some of which I have put into practice on my old bmw !

Good welding Job !!

Fab job !!

Lots of effort there, a new a panel even a pattern one for £25 would have save a fair bit of time

outstanding mig showcase, have to ask what was wire thickness and gas used? Any plans for rx-7 fds that were seen in background often?
Thank you. Wire is 0.8 and the rx7's are destined for restoration. :)

Some of the best panel fabrication and MIG welding that you'll see on the internet.

nope not a test bed, just repairing what the customer requested and can afford as a full restoration would be out of his budget :)
No wonder. There’s Minis out there with patches all over I wouldn’t want to buy it ?
Good skills but it would have been quicker and cheaper to get a decent quality repair panel
I have to ask, why are you using rusty metal to patch this already rusty Mini?
It's only a bit of surface tarnishing nothing to worry yourself about. :)
