      Max B my tip is bring a crate, blanket, puppy pads, and baby wipes. All of these stuff are going to be needed to follow theses steps.
      1.Put your puppy in the crate, and cover the crate with a blanket.
      2.Puppy pads in case of accidents, and baby wipes to clean up the mess.
      3.Make sure your puppy is calm and safe.
      4.Last but not least, make sure to secure the crate with a seatbelt.
      Hope this helps!🙂👍🏼

    I am bringing home an 8 week Shih Tzu puppy in two days. I will be putting her in a small crate for the one hour drive home. She will be joining my 5 yo Shih Tzu, Lia. I have literally been preparing for this for over 6 months. I recently found your videos and they are wonderful. I will be re-watching many of them over the next couple of days.

    I will be getting a chihuahua puppy (adult weight charted to about 4.5 pounds). It will be two full days of car travel to get to the breeder, and then another two full days to get home with the puppy. I will be training her as a service dog for myself. She will definitely be in a crate on that trip, but haven’t decided which one yet.

      Just got my 8 week old goldendoodle yesterday! 2 hr drive each way. Followed advice and went with the crate for my drive home. Was such a good decision as my pup fell asleep in it almost the whole ride home. From there I didn’t need to convince her to like her crate. It’s day 2 today and she’s doing fantastic. Thank you so much for the helpful content! I’ve learned so much from all of the videos. One question though, do you think getting a dog is a good idea with little kids at home and is beneficial for kids, or just too much work? I’ve been seriously thinking about getting a dog, but I just need good advise before I make a bad decision. Hope you can understand. 🙂

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! This will depend on the age of your kids and the breed of puppy you get. I always say all puppies under a year, and more so under 6 months, are like having another baby in the house. They do require a lot of work, more than most people realize. Reach out to us at support@howtotrainadreamdog.com and let us know a little more about your family dynamics so we can help you determine if a puppy or maybe even an older dog might be the right fit for your family.

    Hi! My family and i just brought our puppy home at 9pm (it was a 3 hour driver to and back and we couldn't go earlier due to scheduling issues). We stopped after 2 hours to see if she needed to pee or poop but she didn't. Then, before we brought her home, we gave her another chance to pee in the spot we designated for her outside our apartment and she didn't. Then we put her in the crate when we brought her inside and she started crying so much (which was expected). We waited about 15 min and then brought her back out again for about 10-15min and she didn't do anything. We put her back in the crate for another 15 min and waited until she stopped crying to take her out and try again. Nothing. Now we've put her back in the crate and its quite late so we figured we would see if she just went to sleep and would try again when she starts making a fuss again. It's been an hour and a half since she stopped crying and I'm just wondering if we're doing the right thing. First time owners btw.

    Thank you for this video! We are planning on picking up our 8 week old puppy in a month or so, and it will be a cross country roadtrip - about 5 days (eep!). We were thinking of a slightly larger crate so we can fit in a small/standard Fresh Patch in the crate as well. I know you said only enough space to turn/etc but bc of the length of the trip it might be nice for him/her to be able to have the option to relieve themselves on the patch. What do you think?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Рік тому

      We're glad you found this video helpful! We don't recommend placing a patch inside of the crate, as it may teach your puppy to potty in the crate. With that being said, you will definitely still benefit from using the patch on your trip. When you make your stops, you'll want to avoid your puppy touching the ground at all costs. Using the patch will help you to keep your puppy safe!

    My sister and I are getting 2 Springer Spaniel puppies from the same litter. Will it be OK if we put them both in the crate together to travel home and should we still cover it if we do? I could put the crate in the back of my station wagon or on the back seat where my sister could be sitting. Which would be best?

I did not do the desensitizing training before-hand (i've had her 3 days now) and wonder if I should 'retro' train? Feedback welcome. Thank you !

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  8 місяців тому

      Yes, it sounds like you'll want to take a step back from car rides for now, and work on desensitization. The more time she spends in the crate in distress, the harder it will be to help her love it for the future.

    I agree a crate is primarily the right thing to use. I find it interesting that other dog trainers on the same subject bring up holding the pup ( not the driver ) as a form of bonding and calming. I can also see a pup which has never crated before could then see it as a negative. I have to drive about 5 hours to get my new pup in a couple months. Lots to consider.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Рік тому +1

      Most pups are so exhausted on the way home that they sleep, which becomes the first association to the crate (sleep!). It's also much safer than having a pup on the lap. In the even of an accident the puppy could become seriously injured.

    My dog is 6 and we don’t own a crate because she has severe car anxiety so we typically just put a dog seatbelt on her for vet rides. We’re moving from ny to California next summer and we will be driving so we want to start crate training her now so she’ll be ready. What crate do you recommend for long term travel? She’s a medium sized pitbull about 55lb

    • @Zalayaya
      @Zalayaya 2 роки тому

      Note- we got her when she was 2. She was a rescue from the shelter after being a bait dog so the first few years were spent trying to get rid of her anxiety and introduce her to a safe environment so we never felt like crate training was an option

    My dogs first car ride IS NOT from a breeder. It's from a shelter and all my dogs first rides will be. Adopt don't shop.

      Well it is okay to shop from both!

      Adopt and shop responsibly. If you get a dog from a reputable breeder you won’t be contributing to the over populations of shelters.
