Ms. Garrett! Wow! Where have you been all my life? 🤭 I have an extremely intelligent, 5 mth old, Blue Heeler/Cattahoula Cur mix, female pup. I'm 58 yrs old and until the past couple years I've >never< been able to successfully housebreak a dog. 😔 My current pup, Sheenah, is only my second nearly successful attempt. She still has accidents in the house, but that's when I feed her later than normal. I feel Sheenah's level of intelligence requires a higher level of training than I feel qualified to give at this moment. Could you suggest a place to start with her so I can help her reach her potential? We're in a very rural environment with our closest neighbor being 3 miles away. Cows, chickens, cats and 2 other dogs outside. Teaching her to help with working the cows would be great! I love your personality and what I've seen of your training philosophy in the two videos I've watched so far. I plan on sharing you with one of my daughters and one of my sons, too! Thank you so much for what you're making available here! ❤
I was so glad we got a puppy when we did. The snow storm hit Texas and we were home for a week before my husband had to go back. So he got comfortable quick.

In the next couple of months, I’ll be getting either a Chihuahua puppy or a 4 year old female. Do any of your podcasts address the needs of such tiny dogs? You fav dog toys, harnesses, etc are all geared toward much larger puppies. It’s been nearly 20 years since having a puppy, and that was an Italian greyhound.
I am so glad I was enrolled in Home School the dogs and Recallers' programs and watched all your free videos when I got my puppy. You and your team have made my puppy's and my life so much fun and easy. Thank you! I have shared your podcasts with a friend that just got a puppy. I will make sure he listen to this one :)
I continue to be in awe at how much fabulous free information is available in these podcasts. I'm not getting a puppy anytime soon... but this podcast sure makes me want to. And if I did, I would definitely follow your guidelines 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
Wish you had this when I first got my puppy, although I have always managed to stay at home with her the first six months. I LOVE PUPPIES, but they are certainly a lot of work! Something that is VERY IMPORTANT where we live is shots! Have always been warned by my vet and the breeder not to take them any where there is access to dogs that are not vaccinated against Parvo and Coronaviruses--so contagious especially in warmer climates until they are fully vaccinated, usually at 16 weeks. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for all the wonderful training and all the educational info!! You mentioned that you feed 75% of their food is feed through training. How do you do that when you feed raw?
Susan. My labradoodle is 13 weeks and we have had him for nearly 4 weeks. I employed all the thing you mentioned in your potty training course. My pup is 93% potty trained. He still pees 4-5 times per week in the house. Usually between 7 and 8:30 and within a 5 foot radius. Not sure why this pattern or how to stop it. It was only 2xweek until my son cam home from college and now has increased.
I just want to thank you so much for your podcast/videos! I have a rhodesian coming to me in another week or so and I want to start right. I know she will get so big and want terribly to make this the best dog pal ever. I wish i could join your recallers but just cannot afford it so I am very thankful for your podcast! Thank you!

This is a great video but right away, your suggestions for feeding raise questions for me. By the time we get our puppy, we'll be in the country with no pet store for at least 50 miles. I definitely intend to follow your advice about raw meet but would like to know more. You had a clip in this video showing you preparing food for your dogs and you mentioned 7 protein sources. Do you have a podcast or video showing how you feed your puppies? I'm sure I can find a hundred videos telling me how to do it but, preferably, I'd love to hear what you do, Susan.

Really agree with the food part, especially feeding puppies raw food. Don't cheap out if you want your dog to live long and healthy. Most of the dog foods are just full of artificial fillers and burned down leftover from human food production. That's how they make profit, sell you at cheap prices with even cheaper contents... Which results in you taking your pet to the clinical to spent even more on medical bills.
Thank you for the always wonderful podcast. I was wondering, as a city dweller with no backyard awaiting her puppy in the next month, I have been apprehensive about many people saying I shouldn't walk around the block with my puppy. It's basically my only option to potty train. Do you have tips or alternative solutions for people who live in cities?
Please can you help as I’m at a complete loss. I’m fostering a 13 week old Lurcher pup and this will be her 4th home ! I don’t know too much about her but I do know she was taken from her mum at only 6 weeks! I have had her for 2 days and struggling to get past her constant need to lunge and bite, I know I should say mouthing but she’s growling, her fur is up and she fights off any attempts of distraction just to get to me. She is big and strong, My clothes are torn and her bites bruise and draw blood……that said, your words are still ringing in my ears so I know she’s doing the very best she can with what she must have experienced so far.😔 When she first wakes she’s calm but that only lasts until I try very gently and gradually to interact with her. I do see her really trying and already doesn’t want me out of her sight. I don’t want to give up on her, I really want her to have a wonderful future. Perhaps she needs more than I’m knowledgable enough to give but I’m listening and learning everything I can from you….and I know you wouldn’t give up on her so it’s just how to start our journey together. Thank you so much for all you do, you’re podcasts are amazing!
@lesleychallacombe4547 thank you so much for helping this puppy! 🧡 We have a playlist dedicated to puppy biting - ua-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy03hWZgAQfG1t5Q6YzGPi7z.html You can download the PDF for journaling the biting on our podcast page - dogsthat.com/podcast/18/
Hi Susan. I am loving your content and so glad I stumbled upon your podcast. Where did you get that soft flooring for the puppy pen at 12:05 - 12:12? Thank you!
I messed up that really badly. I scold my puppy, and I wish it was different. Now I think I lost the chance to have a great relationship between me and Autumn. I wish I found you earlier.
I love all of these videos, I have been doing all of the dog training with Recallers, Wag Nation, and homeschool the dog, they were great and still are for my beautiful boy who is already one year and nine months old :) I can definitely say how amazing he has become thanks to all of this, finding a good trainer in Germany was let's say impossible, so thanks to Susan and the team. ok, so we decided to get another puppy :) :) training one dog was great but now I'm a little confused... I know what to do and stuff but how or is there any advice when having a puppy and still training the other dog? Should there be two different schedules? i dont want my current boy to feel left behind, or that he has less attention? i really want to start doing the things as i did with my dog and still have some time to organise the puppy schedule and stuff so any advice would really be great :) :) thanks to all !!!! :)
great video. First ever puppy on the way to this pair of retirees Question: we have an apartment yes a balcony can we use a poop mat in the house. Or take pups down in the elevator
I finally got my new puppy. Not a new dog owner but, I haven't had a puppy in 12 years and my old dog passed one year ago so I haven't had a dog in a year. I belong to recallers and puppy peaks but, I am overwhelmed anyway. Please tell me which videos to watch or how to get him (husky) to not holler and yodel in his crate or when I leave the room? This video says not to leave alone but, I have outdoor chores that take time. (I live alone) Please point me in the right direction.
This is exactly the video I needed! I'm bringing home a malamute pup in a few months and I've been anxious about those first few weeks. I have confidence and an exact plan about how to be ready now. Thank you!
I have had a lot of huskies over the years but, I haven't had a puppy in 12 years so welcome all information as I will be getting my new one in May. Question: In past episode, I believe Episode 26 you talked about taking puppy out on a leash. This video it was an x pen. Is the leash only at night? So leash or x pen?
I use both Helen. If expen is available that is my first choice, if not leash for sure. With all of my past puppies I used a leash after the age of 10 weeks old as by then they had some positive history with a leash, with my current puppy This! I just kept using an expen until she was 4 months old.
I am flying to another state to pick up my puppy and will be spending the first night in a hotel before flying home the next day. Obviously life in the hotel that first night will be very different from life at home. What steps can I take to not transfer any confusion of the first night into regular home life? Thank you in advance for any advice!
What suggestions do you have for training a toy puppy that arrives at her new home (mine) weighing under 5 lbs.? I’ve had 8 dogs and puppies over the past 30 years but none as small as this. (I’ve been downsizing over time.) 😊
Hi Susan, thanks for the info! I'm really curious about your take on vegan humans feeding their dogs vegan diets? Particularly interested in feeding a puppy vegan from the start before they get used to eating meat. I've seen you mention you are vegan, but you also recommended getting a raw food with meat as the primary ingredient. I noticed most vegan dog foods (homemade or packaged) usually have rice, beans, peas, pea proteins, oats, and sweet potatoes as their main ingredients. Would love to see a podcast running through your opinions and maybe some science on this, including your personal view as a vegan who feeds their dogs meat and how you feel about that. I have found some studies that seem to say "vegan food can be ok, but be careful and work with your vet". Many testimonials on both sides, and lots of "controversy"...what's your take?
I'm trying to train my dog she's almost like three or two she is a mix and I have I've been doing a treat training try to walk her she doesn't I'm trying to do it but when I'm trying to do man's she does it sometimes I hike hike sometime and today and I try to the high hike thing today then I did the stop thing and stop stop cuz she keeps dragging me she's almost like two or three or four I don't know how old she is or five I'm like 9 then she doesn't want to do anything with me she just plays drums on me and scratched me every time❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉
With my first dog, when I got her from the breeder, I headed to my mom's place for vacation for about a week, she lives in the mountains and has a huge yard which was useful. Especially with potty training. It transferred quite well when I came back home in the city. Next year, I am getting a new pup. Same breeder. I'm just wondering if I got lucky with my first dog (she is 6 now), would it be a bad idea to spend a week at my mom's? Regarding coming back home and the puppy getting confused? I wonder if it actually helped with my first dog, or if it was just luck that she remained potty trained even in an apartment.
Regarding the Puppy cycle 10:43 : does the ‘sleep’ part mean you are putting the puppy in the crate within the ex-pen vs the ‘free time’ part where puppy is in the ex-pen but able to sleep or play? I’m just letting him choose to sleep or play within the ex-pen, but having just rewatched this today, I’m wondering if I am supposed to put him in his crate.
Question - I am setting up a timetable for my new puppy, my older dog, and me. I’m looking at the get up, out..etc as a cycle with gaps in between. Would it be reasonable to initially schedule 3 cycles through the day until bedtime?
Would you be willing and able, to help me adopt a service dog? Either, a puppy that is trained or needs to be trained. I have been researching for a little over a year. No results 😢. Thank you for any help and guidance can provide. Service dog , non-epileptic seizures, protection when I am in public or at home and diabetic. Thank you again 😇🙏
Can I ask something? Sorry - I'm not a native English speaker and I recall wondering the same thing with one of your earlier podcasts. Are you saying party or potty when you take your puppies out to the toilet? Thank you
Hi Karen, Susan is saying "potty". There is a closed captioning option on the video as well that might be helpful as well. Thanks for enjoying the podcasts!

What age do you consider the best to start here cause with breeders its easy to get them at 8 weeks but can you start with a 15 week old resuce? Does age matter?
My dog won't do anything for food, I throw treats in the kennel and she just looks at me, and lays down. After a couple minutes she may or may not get up and go into the crate for kibble. I skipped 2 meals and my 4 month old dog refuses to do anything for food besides lay down. Now what

She is big and strong, My clothes are torn and her bites bruise and draw blood……that said, your words are still ringing in my ears so I know she’s doing the very best she can with what she must have experienced so far.😔
When she first wakes she’s calm but that only lasts until I try very gently and gradually to interact with her.

Amen on the Gunner Kennel!!!
Hi Susan. I am loving your content and so glad I stumbled upon your podcast. Where did you get that soft flooring for the puppy pen at 12:05 - 12:12? Thank you!
Thanks so much Leah! That is wonderfleeze, which was bought from a company called Avidog, but they don't seem to sell it anymore :(
I am committed- thank you
That's awesome, Terri, remember to send an email to wag@dogsthat.com ❤️
Thank you Susan! This is all so great.
I messed up that really badly. I scold my puppy, and I wish it was different. Now I think I lost the chance to have a great relationship between me and Autumn. I wish I found you earlier.
I am committed 🙏
First ever puppy on the way to this pair of retirees
Question: we have an apartment
yes a balcony
can we use a poop mat in the house. Or take pups down in the elevator
Super helpful!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
OMG i needed this!!!
Tater Salad is a star!
Hi Helen, here's another to help you with gradually extending the time ua-cam.com/video/IokYnQOAWVg/v-deo.html
This is exactly the video I needed! I'm bringing home a malamute pup in a few months and I've been anxious about those first few weeks. I have confidence and an exact plan about how to be ready now. Thank you!
How'd it go?
I have had a lot of huskies over the years but, I haven't had a puppy in 12 years so welcome all information as I will be getting my new one in May. Question: In past episode, I believe Episode 26 you talked about taking puppy out on a leash. This video it was an x pen. Is the leash only at night? So leash or x pen?
I use both Helen. If expen is available that is my first choice, if not leash for sure. With all of my past puppies I used a leash after the age of 10 weeks old as by then they had some positive history with a leash, with my current puppy This! I just kept using an expen until she was 4 months old.
The big end stores are doing better with raw and have big freezers now.
I am flying to another state to pick up my puppy and will be spending the first night in a hotel before flying home the next day. Obviously life in the hotel that first night will be very different from life at home. What steps can I take to not transfer any confusion of the first night into regular home life? Thank you in advance for any advice!
I am committed to raising the best miniature schnauzer I can possibly raise. We pick up Rory on 07/06/2023. Sign me up. Thank you,
What suggestions do you have for training a toy puppy that arrives at her new home (mine) weighing under 5 lbs.? I’ve had 8 dogs and puppies over the past 30 years but none as small as this. (I’ve been downsizing over time.) 😊
I am committed.
Feeding raw with 7 different protein- sources with rotation is the best!
I started at number one podcast and finally made it to 70
Big celebrations and a big THANK YOU!
I am committed! Thanks a lot for your amazing podcasts and training programs ❤️
Susan, you said to use 75% of their food for training. Also, you said you feed raw. What kind of food do you use for training? Thank you.
Hi Lisa, Susan uses a variety of home made cookies, dehydrated and freeze-dried treats, and also uses a spoon to reward with minced raw food.
Thank you again 😇🙏
at 8:20 there is a quick clip where it looks like Susan is showing what she has in the puppy's crate, is this in another episode or blog post?
Hi Caitlin, the clip is from a puppy training Workshop in our Agility Nation classroom.
What if puppy doesn't have shots and I'm basically home bound with puppy

If you put your puppy back in the crate @ 5 a.m. after getting busy, what if they bark for the next 20 minutes?
Hi Judy, then "don't wake da mama" is for you! Here's the episode: ua-cam.com/video/Fd8wkmmZnvs/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared

How early age do you start training? What podcast is that?
Hi Bridget, our playlist for Puppy Essentials shows a lot you can do with young puppies - ua-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy2hywpv3Md3HbWWPPbVF8W5.html
👍❤️
💕💕💕💕💕
i can't find the handouts
Hi Mary, everything Susan mentions in the video is in the description box right underneath the video ❤️
What make of xpen do you use 🤔 please
Hi Siobhan, Susan has a few ex-pen favorites here: dogsthat.com/favs/
How did you know I'm getting a new puppy?!
@@DogsThat Thank you for the answer. Potty made sense but I rather thought party was fun :-)
Can anyone direct me to the pod cast where Susan shows how to shape dog to wear gentle leader
Hi Kim, here's the episode for you:

The episode on shaping a dog to wear muzzle is also a great resource to see how things are broken down into elements to create a positive conditioned emotional response:

What age do you consider the best to start here cause with breeders its easy to get them at 8 weeks but can you start with a 15 week old resuce? Does age matter?
Hi Ashtyn you can start with your 15 week old for sure!
link to toys is not working, unfortunatelly :(
Hi Sofya! We've just checked and both the 4MyMerles and the West Paw links work, are those the ones you're referring to?
@@DogsThat I checked again and it is opening only through PC, not from laptop or phone on wi-fi. Thanks!
My dog won't do anything for food, I throw treats in the kennel and she just looks at me, and lays down. After a couple minutes she may or may not get up and go into the crate for kibble. I skipped 2 meals and my 4 month old dog refuses to do anything for food besides lay down. Now what
Hi Barbara, Susan did a podcast on this topic, here's the link for you: ua-cam.com/video/lSoSuz2hV3g/v-deo.html

Hey thank you for this info I am new to your channel I’m getting a puppy in march but I have a 2 year old cat that’s not use to dogs I’m worried for her is there any advice? 🤍
Hi! Congrats on your soon to be new puppy! Here's a video on introductions: ua-cam.com/video/K17x8i_Qb9k/v-deo.html
We will have a new puppy in a few weeks. But we have to travel one month after getting him so he will be back with the breeder after 30 days for two weeks. Any suggestions?
