The Wizard of Oz was made in 1939, one of the best years of old Hollywood. It's iconic and your movie knowledge is incomplete without watching it!
The lyric of, "but Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man, that he didn't already have" means the Tin Man already was caring and empathetic and had a "heart" for others.

The Wizard of Oz is such a treasure. "From 1959-1991, the showing of The Wizard of Oz was an annual tradition on American commercial network television." My family used to watch it yearly. I definitely would encourage Jay to see it at least once as part of his film education.

Those of us of a certain age remember when "The Wizard of Oz" came on only once a year on TV and everyone watched it. I can't remember what time of year it was, but we all watched it. The film was released in 1939 but still popular as late as the 1970s and '80s. It's strange to me that people are no longer familiar with it, since it was an annual TV event for literally decades and decades.

I don’t remember the time of year but it was always a Sunday evening. What these later generations can’t comprehend is all the things they grew up with that we didn’t have like VCRs and DVD players. Also, we had literally only 3 or 4 TV stations to watch, not the hundreds on cable. These guys have been able to watch whatever movie they want, whenever they want. Because we never had that luxury is what made the annual showing of the Wizard so special because we couldn’t see it again for another year.

If your goal is to watch classic movies, 1939's Wizard of Oz is a must. It's one of the first films in colour and uses a bit of black and white to separate the fantasy from reality. Good for the kids and adults as well. Talk him into it Amber. As for America, you'll want to hear "Sister Golden Hair", "Ventura Highway" and "Lonely People."

You didn't try to make too much sense of the imagery; you just let it carry you away into another world. And, man, that blend of harmonies, instruments, and rhythm on this song is just magical.

It's so much a part of American culture, that it will help you understand so many references in songs and other movies. It was also an amazing film considering it was made -- in color -- in 1939. For those of us who grew up with them, these guys were a trip.
"'Tin Man' was the first single released from Holiday in the Autumn of 1974,, and became a hit, the band’s fourth Top Ten hit in America, staying at number four on the Hot 100 list. In October it went to number one on the Easy Listening chart.
"Released only as a b-side to their song 'Mad Dog' in the UK, it did not become a UK hit. …
"Here now is Dewey, in his own words, on the origins of his song 'Tin Man.'
DEWEY BUNNELL: "'Tin Man' was manufactured from the chunks of thoughts and themes that I was putting together into a kind of mosaic. It wasn’t a common thread.
“'Horse With No Name' was a dialogue; it’s a story from the first day to the last day and what it was.
“'Ventura Highway' has certainly got a thread, a chain. But with 'Tin Man,' I think you have to break it up into chunks that were going through my mind at the time to understand it.
"I originally wanted to write a cohesive dialogue about The Wizard of Oz, which I loved. It was my favorite movie as a kid and it’s still one of my Top Ten. I probably even would go so far that if someone said 'What’s your favorite movie of all time?' I might go there.
"The song is like surrealism, which was a genre of art that was always mesmerizing for me. There’s the whole psychedelic thing, coming out of the Sixties, the Woodstock generation, opening your eyes, expanding your mind and looking at things differently. We really did, we were a straight culture out of the Fifties. It was all black and white. …
"Some are quick to take the bait when you come up with a subject to expand on it and catch the perfect prize that waits among the shells. Actually, in the lyrics here, it says `shelves,’ but it should be `shells.’
So even when you grab onto a subject, you grab it and you take the bait and you run with it, you talk about it and you figure it out. Like we all try to figure out the fate of the world. That would be the perfect prize. The reason that I say that I’m on the shells, because that relates to catching the fish that waits among the shells. It’s pretty abstract, I agree. …"

It would be by far the oldest you watched on your channel, made in 1939. What the song says about the Tin Man is that he already had a heart, he didn’t need the Wizard to give it to him. To add to my previous statement. The Oz books were published in May 17, 1900, there were 12 of them. There was a book FINDING DOROTHY, by Elizabeth Leets, great insight into the movie and L. Frank Baum. When you kids get a little older you should have them watch them.

Wizard of Oz was released in 1939. Just a hint…. We are taking you on a musical journey through tunes from years and years ago like 40s, 50s plus. You like our music? Yes? Look at your wall, Frank Sinatra to Hendrix to Metallica. You haven’t delved into classic old Hollywood movies. From silent screen to black and white to color, there is a whole world of amazing cinema out there, that is just as breathtaking as the music. Just cause we’re old, doesn’t make us irrelevant. Remember you wouldn’t have artists in music and film today if those icons of yesterday didn’t pave the way.

Oh my. Guys, the Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film, that starred the great Judy Garland. It was a great year for films, but how it became a part of American culture was through TV. Starting in the late 50's, it was shown once a year, in the Spring, on a Sunday evening, often around Easter. This was before VHS tapes, and there being only three major networks, I believe NBC had the rights to it. But it was "must see" for the entire family, especially once color television became household wide. So, it is deeply ingrained in most of us over the age of 45 (?). I hope you watch it with your children, or on your movie reaction. It is a great film. A classic of the highest form.

Also there is some supposed synchronicity between the movie and Pink Floy's Dark Side of the Moon album (start them both at the same time and, at times, the music seems to follow the movie's action).
