    *Whatever gear allows YOU to tell YOUR story, is the best gear for you* 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 _I wish more people understood this!_
    To the person who asked for an alternative to the GoPro, I believe they just want "compact camera" options & I'd say *Olympus TG-6* &/or the Sony Rx100 series.

    I have a question regarding the actual handling the rig over the full time cycle of the dive i.e. what is the best way to carry the rig when you are commuting between filming sites, what is the best way to store the rig during the ascent when you need both hands, what you think is the best way to enter and exit the water with a slippy shore entry over rocks etc.?
    I live in Scotland where dark waters, strong current, rough topside conditions, carrying a decompression stage etc. are the norm.
    So far I have been shooting with a reasonably compact GoPro rig w/tripod, and have managed ok but now I am moving onto a much more substantial SLR rig and I wonder how I will deal with it underwater when I am not actually using it, mainly during the ascent and surface swimming in rough conditions.
    Love the videos and keep up the great work! Your editing is 2nd to none and I find your advice super useful, with your tutorial on camera buoyancy being the best one available on the web by far!

    Would you recommend the olympus tg6 for beginners in post treatment video/photography? Because it can shoot raw but without a full manual mode. Or is it a better camera in the same budget?
    Thanks a lot for the videos i just discovered the channel and subscribed!

    • @ReefPatrol
      @ReefPatrol 5 років тому +2

      I would go for a camera that has full manual controls, to really learn the basics... once you leaned them they are the same on all other cameras :) helps a lot! Having RAW photo files is very important, but nearly all the cameras have a RAW photo mode these days.

      @@ReefPatrol Thanks for taking the time to do this and this answer - I had exactly the same question, especially since the missus just bought a TG5 for UW stills... Played around with it for video but mostly disappointed. Looking into the TG6, while the new ability to shoot 4K in the camera's famous UW macro modes is very tempting, the lack of manual controls seems too limiting to take the plunge.
      If I may rebound on this question (maybe a new question would be in better?) do you think you could, in the near future, give out some recommendations for, herm, relatively budget options cameras that offer good video and manual control - most of the stuff found online focuses on stills, stills, stills with very little actual info on using cameras primarily for UW video - compacts such as the Sony-a6400, Canon G7X and Sony RX100 are often mentioned as having good video performance but that's about it... And most basic kits are these are still quite price jump from say TG6+ housing set...
      I work in diving and use Gopros for small (storyless ;) ) logbook clips such as these ( ua-cam.com/video/H3-LJUT4_UI/v-deo.html ) but would really like to try to push things a little further in the future, both in terms of editing and equipment, while staying in the portable, sturdy and financially relatively accessible zone if possible (unfortunately not options to dive for myself only at the moment)
      Thanks again for taking the time to do this!
      Cheers!
      Ben

    What do you think of Nolan Omura's underwater art?

    • @karyleianawildernesscapes
      @karyleianawildernesscapes 5 років тому +2

      It's highly stylized with a lot of post-processing. But it's what makes him standout, it's a "look" very much associated with him, & as a photog/creator, that's always the goal (to have your own distinctive style).

    Congratulations guys. This video has just been embedded in Sony's new sensor website. We'll done. I also have a question.... I'm debating to buy Aquatica or Nauticam housing. I was going to go with Aquatica mainly because its smaller and I'm female with small hands. I see you use Nauticam Vanessa, I'm guessing you don't have any issues reaching all the controls when your holding the housing?

    • @ReefPatrol

    • @ReefPatrol

      Hi again, no I have absolutely no issues reaching any controls... great housing! Aquatica are great too of course... personal preference... try both... I like the smoothness of the knobs on Nauticam. Also they have a lot more accessories in my opinion.

      Hi, btw you can USE Ambient Filters with NO RED filters. RED Filters will just improve the colors, the Ambient light fitler will get rig of the RED Tint, that the white lights get, when you do a manual white balance to the ambient light, check out our video: ua-cam.com/video/Zn4NRQgl2tw/v-deo.html If you have a Sony camera, then a RED Fitler makes a LOT of sense, as their White Balance doesn't work very well underwater because their Kelvin range is not enough. But the good news is, Sony are really good in low light, so adding filters will lower your exposure... but you can increase the ISO a LOT on sony, so you can compensate for the light loss due to filters! :)

      @ReefPatrol 5 років тому

      acrually had that one in ... but cut it out... :) because I thought perhaps he didn't like the form factor ;) the OSMO Pocket and the FDR3000 ere a little different. and now thinking about it... of course you can also go 360° *lol* but I am guessing a compact cam will be best for him... but it's always so hard to say right? When you don't know the budget, etc...

    • @dylanslater83
      @dylanslater83 5 років тому +1

      @@ReefPatrol Yes that's a good point, and I guess for the same price you could get an LX10 or something in that class. I wouldn't say a 360 cam though, I have a passion for hating them but that's just me. I'm just using the Sony fdrx1000v with lume cubes, it's doing the job for a beginner diver.

I'm using a Sony rx100 point and shoot...(if not, maybe you could talk more about the tripod you use, and considerations you take when using it. I was worried about when you *wouldn't* want to use a tripod. Like say if you were muck diving-could a tripod hurt anything in the sand?)
