This episode is about color grading underwater footage. This technique will help you restore the white balance of your underwater video (of course depending on the footage only to some extent). Vanessa Cara-Kerr explains the Channel Mixer VIDEO effect in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019 and why it makes sense to use it instead of the Lumetri Color Panel to restore your white balance. Also she talks about the Lumetri Scopes and why you need the RGB Parade, RGB Waveform and the YUV Vectorscope.
We hope this underwater color correction tutorial will help you with your underwater filmmaking skills and underwater footage.
--------------------
If you are using Final Cut Pro X you have to use a 3rd party plugin like Alex4D Channel Mixer: www.alex4d.com/... there you can find it under: Effects - Stylize Plugins - Channel Mixer
(Channel Mixer - Combines colour values from red, gree, blue and alpha )
Also for APPLE users you can find the Channel Mixer in APPLE MOTION.
If you are Using DaVinci Resolve the Effect is called RGB Mixer.

This tutorial is incredibly helpful to me. I come back regularly to watch how you edited the video with the great white shark. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!
This video not only has great information but it is presented in a manner that is easy to follow and learn. Thank you!
wow, ended up here on a google search and though, wait a minute, I know this lady :). Wonderful content, hope you are well!
Best tip for underwater footage color grading on UA-cam!

@@ReefPatrol I guess make a video about tips on pre-care and after care of camera and lights equipment before and after diving? Everybody must not forget the basic basic! 😅😂
Yes! Great tutorial. I needed this for a video I recently shot. You guys bring out the best colors underwater.
thanks mate!
thank you for the tipps!

Amazing Video. Thanks. The first one I see mentioning the Channel Mixer. Love those tutorials
I don't have a channel mixer under video effects in my premiere pro 2023
Love behind the mask ...great tutorials. So helpful
extremely helpful! applied in the last dive trip and the sharks also start to look Sharky! :) Thanks a lot!
Thanks for this video. The best for underwater color correction so far!
Amazing. Keep going with this videos. Very good.
thank you Paulo!!! :)
thank you. i wonder if this is what the dive+ app does
After watching this I wan't to redo my Hawaii video, this was such good information! I use DaVinci Resolve but I think I can do about the same... hopefully.
it is called RGB Parade :)
@@ReefPatrol thanks! Also didn't know about this channel, more great content to pore over :D
cool!
Very helpful thank you 💙

Thanks for this great tutorial. It just made my new Video so much better. :)
Thank you 😊
Hi Vanessa, thanks for sharing this video. That's really useful for me. And I have a question that where can I buy the Underwater type colorchecker passport, or that's just ordinary type and used water proof case? (I already have Xrite color passport.) Thank you.
thank you so much! 💚💚
Thank you so much!
Amazing tutorial! Thanks!
The best tutorial on this out there! Do you have a way to help adjust the colour grading with changing depths? Ascending from 30m will have a big change and a lot of red when returning to the surface. Just wondering if there is a tick to this? Thanks
Tq Great video I'm your new subscriber 😁
Can you do a color grading in Davinci?
This was great! When is the next episode of BTMcolorgrademyfootage coming out?
Hi! I cant find this in Premiere 2021... Which version are you using? Is there a different name for this version? Thanks
Any idea what tool in Final Cut Pro X would be the equivalent of the Channel Mixer in Premiere?
Totally unrelated question....What do you use in your hair to keep it from drying out in the salt water?
:) :) :) nothing... fresh water shower after dive :) not a fan of chemical products.
@@ReefPatrol Awesome. Natural girl ;)
While reducing the blue in the red channel, how did you know to use the Blue-Red slider and not the Blue-Green? In other words, how did you know that you needed to reduce in the red channel and not the green channel?
Thank you very much. Very useful video. I have a general question : why is is better to use the curves (S curve) in order to put more contrast instead of using the contrast slider?
Thank again
defently! you have a lot more influence :) if you just wanna add a quick contrast sure... but if you want to be more detailled... CURVES ;)
Reef Patrol thank you. I will watch more videos about this subject. Even for pictures, I always use the slider...
@@regish1618 you can use the slider, but Curves are better to control :)
The standard contrast slider effects the entire image. Curves let you change contrast in more precise regions and gives you more creative options.
Would you be able to colour grade some of my footage from the UK? I shoot RAW on a GoPro Hero 8 Black - a lot of the time I don't use a filter as the depth of my dives change. Alot of the water here is very green and often looks washed out.
I'd love to see how you edit some of the UK footage?
P.s I'm colour blind so this is already super tricky but I think I'm getting there haha
Amazing again! 😎
thaaaaank you!!
thank you!
Hello. I know this might not be the best video to ask this question. Anyway, I really hope I could have your idea about the choice I'm facing. I know you are using Panasonic GH5 camera. I am considering to buy one, but cannot decide if I should get GH5 or GH5s. Each has its own advantages. GH5 with IBIS, and GH5s with bigger sensor... And I really dont know which one would be better for underwater still photography, and accidental videos.
I would really, really appreciate to hear back from You. Thank you!! :)
for still defently GH5s :) If you are using strobes you won't have an issue because of lacking IBIS. Use a lens that has IS. :)
@@ReefPatrol Hello. I was leaning towards GH5s. Just needed that final "push"., Thank You!! :)
Great tutorial...bless you
How about 360 videos? Anything possible to color correct them?
360° with GoPro Max and Insta 360 will for sure be a topic!
First of all, thank you for your tutorial. It was very helpful. I am in the process of making gopro hero 8 underwater setup. Do you think premiere pro post processing can replace the red filter and ambient light filter? I would prefer to have just gopro hero 8 and 2 diving lights without any filters on.
Very good info video! Helped a lot.
Very nice video Vanessa. Nevertheless can you slow down a little? We’re learning....
Just learning about underwater color correction, finding your content very helpful. Is laterally shifting the RGB curve in Lumetri a substitute for the channel mixer adjustment layer? Seems to have the same effect on the lumetri scope. When I add the channel mixer to my timeline its a little hard to organise with transitions between clips that have different Channel Mixer adjustment, ie i get a split second of a red filter for one clip during the transition. Guessing there must be a solution for this as well.
This is one of the best videos I had ever seen. It gives me so many info on how to use tools in Adobe Premiere Pro that I as a newbie did'tn know. I will test the channel mixer on my footage from last year trip to red sea. Thank you very much.
#BTMColorGradeMyFootage taken with Gopro Hero7 at 2.7k 24fps (this year I will use 60fps), gopro color profile (I'm scared, but maybe I'll try flat profile).
PLEASE let us know how it went and if you need help, drop us a message here!
@@ReefPatrol of course. We are going to Maldivas on December. Hopefully I will get great footage on that trip.
@@ReefPatrol Oh, and of course I will let you know the result of my tests with the channel mixer 👌
amazing! Thanks!
Arrived from red sea! flat footage, time to edit! :)
Ah, and one other question. I have a 1DX2 and getting ready to purchase a nauticam housing and a 8-15mm. So not a small investment. I also just noticed that canon announced the 1DX3 which has raw video support. Wondering if it's worth holding out. Its sort of unknown at the moment when it will be out plus when Nauticam will have a housing ready.
Do you guys usually sell your gear and upgrade often or just buy new stuff and start a gear museum? :)
really informative video, helped alot, thanks
Hello. Thoughts on differences between 'Channel Mixer' and 'Levels'?
Wow... thanks a lot
WELCOME!!! :)
welcome :)
Oh Wow, Just too much good luck everyone
Another awesome video, thanks for all the tips, I really appreciate what you are doing! great footage and thanks for helping others make great footage also! Also #BTMcolorgrademyfootage !
thanks :)
So good!
Idk if anyone else here has experienced this, but my camera only shoots 8bit h.264 and when I try to do any color correcting via the channel mixer I get severe banding in my colors. Is there a way to use channel mixer without getting this problem?
The Channel Mixer option is not available anymore in the latest Premiere Pro 😞 What a bummer!
Damned!
Indeed@@BehindtheMask ! I had to take a long road via After Effects....
Where I can get these white balance and color check cards?
Will be out soon :) we ll let you know
@@ReefPatrol thanks
Keldan will have them very soon.

OMG. it;s still too complicated for me to understand , my mind just overwhelming with these information
we want more vidéos 😊
Hi Vanessa. When you are shooting raw video, do you still white balance or just do that in post? With my photos I don't worry about it and just white balance off sand or something white in the photo. Just wondering what your flow is for capturing the source footage. Thank you!
#BTMcolorgrademyfootage. I have a clip of an eel but there is lots of sand...which is way to white after my correction attempt. Please show me how to maximise this clip.
#BTMcolorgrademyfootage so I have an awesome shot of three Goliath Grouper in one shot... I’m in the Gulf of Mexico without a red filter... could you help me salvage the footage?
#BTMcolorgrademyfootage
How do I give the footage to you?
#BTMcolorgrademyfootage I traveled 20 hours to reach Malapascua Philippines in order to dive with Thresher sharks. Sharks can be spotted at sunrise with low light conditions. I ended up with pixelated Gopro footage :(
maybe you can restore a bit this way :) Use a de-noiser too if you have one.
Same. In a cloudy day :/
@@hshneo ?
@@ReefPatrol Is de-noiser a software or a plugin in Adobe Premier
I got worst conditions @Reef Patrol
