@@LoveJT8DI flew that exact same plane via American Airlines from Dallas to Spain in February the takeoff is like a rocket when the brakes are released it was a nighttime flight because of the 8 hour time difference I had a window seat in premium economy I got to see how the new flaps worked it was incredible
It's a real treat to see these reflections. It's almost like watching some liquid oozing across the wing. More airlines need to give their wings these reflective surfaces :)
I want the Concorde back. I saw it take off from London Heathrow when I was 10. The terminal windows vibrated to no end. It was awesome watching that plane take off
Bad Moe That’s exactly what I miss about the glory days of aviation. When passenger aircraft such as the Concorde shook buildings. For as much as I like the Dreamliner, Airlines today are too quiet on the outside :). Really cool you got to see the Concorde fly in person. I had a chance as a kid but never went to see it.
Hydraulics on that plane are like no other. Love it. 767 use to have my favorite hydraulic pump sound. Now it’s the 787.... 757 still has the best flap sound though followed by 787 n then 767
The sound recording in your video is phenomenal! Im sure those electric pump whines were annoying after a while, but in the video they sound pretty cool! Great video overall thanks for sharing!
Yup. 787 is my favorite. But those pumps are the worst part of this plane. I feel like I'm gonna go insane after non-stop of that sound. You could only hear it in this area of seats though. Behind or front of the wing are fine. None of these sound.
+Noel Jacobs Nice to meet another 787 fan :) Looks like I may have flown UA's first 787 around the same time you did, when the aircraft were first being delivered. I think I flew mine, on Jan 1, 2014.
what a fantastic beginning of a new year....a flight with Boeing's new flagship > thumbs UP! I think, it's the -8 version, or? Awesome night scenery in DFW and LAX...GREAT JOB!

I hope you had a great flight and got a chance to look at the front of those ge90 engines I flew a Triple 7 out of Jamaica sitting right in front of the GE 90 s in a heavy rainstorm and I watch that thing and just massive puddles from the runway just turned them into vapor was beautiful
Really spectacular departure and approach to Lax international airport I’m going to Austin international airport Friday and taking American Airlines to LAX international airport my flight leaves at 9:00pm
I know when I use to fly from .Maryland to LAX California at Christmas time at night it was absolutely Gorgeous with all the 🎄 lites looking down T the area you are about to land at.
It's from the motors deploying the flaps. it uses a spinning shaft that originates from under fuselage portion over the wing. That's why it's so audible. It is surprising it is so loud having on the brand new 787.
+LoveJT8D You'd think the "flap tracks" would house a hydraulic system used to deploy the flaps. But that's no the case. They really are just flap track guides.
That constant high pitched sound sounds exactly like the flaps extending and retracting, but they are seemingly not moving a lot of the time the noise is there! And the noise is there when the flaps should not be being altered such as whn the plane is already thundering down the runway about to take off. What possible explanation could there be for this? Maybe the high pitched whine of the engines on this plane sounds exactly the same as the flaps almost?! hah
My assumption is that they're pumping hydraulic fluid to a pressure in which the flaps can be pushed out, since it requires a lot of work to counteract the movement of wind over such a large area. I don't know why the pumps are so loud for the 787 specifically, but I honestly quite like it as an avgeek.
All aircraft have them. Wingtip navigation lights. Red on right green on left. Some aircraft have white also. Tail has white. These are to make the aircraft more visual to other aircraft and controlers. If you are talking about the the bright colored lights on the wing that is a reflection of the lights below.
This is why I have always, always enjoyed flying--if private, Military--whether helicopters, twin engined transport. That is catapulted off. This is when I was aboard the USS Midway CV41 overseas, on Westpac cruises. After that, a helicopter ride around Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Then even more flying. But. Even before that, I flew aboard prop airlines--just before jet liners became public used! Of course more than I can say now...

I remember hearing this similar bump sound upon liftoff back in December '75 when returning home on a B722 on two flights (same plane). visually a great video but the whine from the hydraulic pumps makes the video difficult to listen to. I haven't flown a 787 so I don't know if the whine from the hydraulic pumps is normal though I'm not sure how this whine can be normal, sounds like the pumps are not working properly.
+Andre Boardman Yes it was quite loud. I have read online that this electric "whining" sound is attributable to a hydraulic pump that assists in the deployment of flaps.

why would they add more weight (means more expensive fares) for isolating a noise you hear just couple of times a flight.. During landings and take offs.
@ LoveJT8D: Where were you flying from? I heard the pilots and flight attendants say that flight was to LAX. I saw gate 153 where the plane left from. You must have started at a very huge airport. Wherever you started had a very beautiful view.
When I hear the sound of all those hydraulic motors, my heart just goes lub dub lub dub *heavy breathing*

it's got all these unique whines and hums that happen during take off and landing, presumably from the slats and flaps. very intresting
Yes and much more audible than I would have expected. I believe all stemming from the hydraulic system specifically the hydraulic pumps.
sounds like hydro pumps? correct me if im wrong
It's from the motors deploying the flaps. it uses a spinning shaft that originates from under fuselage portion over the wing. That's why it's so audible. It is surprising it is so loud having on the brand new 787.

Night is really a cool time to fly. Especially departing from a large city. There's something so calming about seeing the lights from up high.
I can’t believe they made the 787 that exposed to hydraulic whine.
