Beth's story about her indoor herb garden is so inspiring! It's a reminder that sometimes all we need is a little attention to bring something beautiful back to life. 🌱
Hats off to Beth for shedding light on the evolving landscape of online advertising and privacy. It's a topic that affects us all, and her insights are valuable.
Great stuff! People need to better understand how the web's content is subsidized by advertising, the inherent value exchange of ad-supported media, the controls users have available, and how data gets safely anonymized
Interesting insights on the Bader Meinhoff phenomena and how it relates to our online experiences. It's fascinating how our attention and confirmation biases shape what we see online.
This stuff is really interesting. I know my algorithm is off because my girlfriend uses my phone to search for things she wants - starting to suspect she does it on purpose so they come up in my suggested ads.
I can relate to Beth's coffee shop analogy. It's nice when places know your preferences. But, I'm still not sure if I'm comfortable with online tracking.
I'm so glad the analogy resonated with you. The main takeaway is think about what you are comfortable sharing and what you are not. Knowing what kind of coffee I drink is different from knowing what medications I take.
While Beth argues for the benefits of data sharing, I can't help but worry about how our personal information is used without our consent. It's a trade-off we should think more about.

Am I missing something here? Information about me has been on file [somewhere] since before I was born. Does it matter and is it accessible to potential employers, partners or hackers?
Ok, so you're 11 and you're using your computer to look at online gratification.... It's the family's computer used by everyone. Now I can understand your paranoia that this information will be shared and they'll know what you look at.

She raises a valid point about the importance of data sharing for democratization of the internet, it's interesting to think about it in that light.

I agree that transparency is the key. It's always a trade off and one that should be made carefully and knowingly.

I laugh when I get adverts for things I've been googling. It feels good to know I've given some computer algorithm something to do.
You’ve reminded me of the beauty in life.
Am I missing something here? Information about me has been on file [somewhere] since before I was born. Does it matter and is it accessible to potential employers, partners or hackers?
I'm not entirely convinced that targeted ads are a good thing. It feels a bit invasive knowing that companies collect so much data about us.
in a perfect world, defintely. but we don't live in a perfect world.
I'm not sure what specially it is that upsets people about data sharing. Unless you're involved in illegal activities what do you have to hide?
I still don't like cookies, don't like being tracked
Exactly, that should be your option.
hmm, not sure about this, if I google tractors I don't want to see ads for tractors for the next few weeks. It's overwhelming

Excellent example of bad faith. How to convince people that advertising based on stealthily grabbing their data is good for them.
TLDR: Give away your data so that content creators can get more money from you…
No thanks!
That's true only if you then buy something from them. Giving access to your internet activity doesn't automatically give them your money.
