Good review, but i think people are judging it like a utility knife, its not really meant for heavy use, its edc/self defence it doesnt need to hold an edge that well
Exactly, its not meant to be a razor sharp knife to cut paper sheets, its meant to stab an attacker in a vital area such as the chest, neck or skull in a life or death situation, and I think its great for this purpose.
Bought one of these yesterday for $35 at a gun show. I'm really impressed by the design of the sheath and its mounting system. I played with it a bit last night, trying out various mountings and positions on my belt. (I wear an IWB or OWB holster on my strong - right - side, and a mag carrier at my 8:30 position. There are also wide belt loops that have to be worked around on most of my pants.) The sheath can be attached with just one loop attachment, but you can do something interesting with two. With the two loops at opposite ends, the blade (when mounted sideways) is held very closely to the belt, making for a very low-profile setup that's very discreet. The downside to this mounting is that the handle is so close to the belt that it's difficult to get to quickly and surely. So I've mounted mine at the toe and mid points of the sheath. This holds the sheath fairly close to the belt, but presents the handle farther from the belt for ease of access. (For now, I've settle on carrying mine at the 1 o'clock position set up for a left-handed cross draw.) (The black sheath and grip is still nearly invisible to the casual viewer against a black belt). Another thing that can be done is that the loops can be mounted facing in different directions (both facing out, both facing in - at least when they're at opposite ends, and both facing in the same direction). I found this can be important when dealing with other articles on the belt already, and with belt loops, and making minor adjustments to move the sheath closer to those obstacles. I think the video is slightly unfair. The reviewer tests the knife for purposes for which is it clearly not designed. This is a back-up or last-ditch weapon, to be used to deliver a few stabs or slashes, and either beating feet, or then drawing a firearm (possibly after using the knife to defend against a gun grab - the specific task for which I purchased it to replace my usual EDC folding knife; a fixed blade is superior to such a task). It is not a survival or woodsman knife, and is not intended to be used for more than a few seconds of close and bloody work. For that, I think it's superbly designed.
The purpose of this knife is pretty much the exact same as the Benchmade SOCP. It is for use as a backup self defense weapon OR for an emergency CQB situation in which you are unable to draw your pistol because an adversary is too close, basically "on top of you" This weapon can be deployed rapidly and used to "create distance" so as to then enable you to draw your firearm. I don't plan on chopping any wood with mine.
Thanks so much for sharing how you adjusted the belt loop placements. I can't grab it with the loops at each end. However after adjusting the loops it still didn't give me the needed purchase to feel i could pull it for its emergency sd situation design and not drop it.
The pins on the sheath that hold it in place is what dulls the blade, best to pull the blade out with pressure towards the bottom of the blade not against it ,and will stay sharp, just purchased the Bdz-1 steel version and the Bdz-1 strongarm version both better steel and less corrosive,so upgrade to the latest and you won't have to worry about the protective coating
A concealable USA made Gerber, with a sheath thats actually useable, for $50 ?!?! This thing just shot strait to the top of my 'To Buy' list. I narmally EDC a Spyderco Salt in my back pocket as backup weapon for my pistol. A nice fixed blade with REAL mounting options could supplant that nicely.
Gosh I love the blade, but your review is just gold, man. EVERY ASPECT, is covered. Not just the blade, but also the sheath. It's very, very hard to find a UA-camr that also reviews the sheath. Thank you
I have one of these with the neoprene sleeve to carry as a "boot knife". The sleeve could be a little larger, I have to wear it lower on my leg than I would like, which makes it tough while wearing boots, but most people with "normal" calves should have no problem wearing it a little higher on the lower leg and be able to access the blade pretty easily. especially while wearing boots. I've also used it as a horizontal/scout carry belt knife. It is a bit small for my hands, but I don't know how many small boot/neck knives will fit my xl/xxl large hands all the perfectly. The sheath is really nice, as you talked about in your video. Honestly, for the price I wasn't expecting the sheath to be as nice as it was. Retention is awesome and it can be used to carry the blade in a number of different ways. This is a really nice blade for the price. It was $40 for knife, sheath and neoprene sleeve on Amazon not to long ago. I try to use it purely as a self defense knife and have only used it on occasion to open boxes, etc. Overall I'd give it a 4/5 for the price range, knocking off a point for the ergonomics.
Great video, but, your video's generally are, what would be neat though, would be a Carbon CroVan go against a 420HC, sort of stainless vs. carbon, my candidate would be a BK14, "And in this corner weighing in at 3oz's with Sheath" get the picture, he he he.
I just received the Gerber Freeman Guide Folder knife and love it so much and I love it so much. The Emergency Survival kit I received from them came with a small knife to be used in case of emergency and I love how that knife looks as well. The knife you are reviewing is nice and good for urban use.
EDC for me right now. Only time I need something bigger is out hiking with the family or when you see that 1 guy that carries a buck 119 every day. I cant do my daily tasks at work if it's not mounted horizontal. This is the best and biggest fixed blade I've found that does not imprint too much if I conceal it.
I've had this knife for about a year, only wearing it on my belt. I found the rubber started to wear off, but I was able to wrap it in parachord with some creativity. also, you can fit a molle strap through the belt loops, I've tried it and it works perfectly, it's very wobbly, though.
Yeah I don't really think Gerber ever really intended for this knife to be a "long term" use knife though. I would use this for light duty utility or as a last ditch combat knife to create space between an attacker and myself in a grapple. I wouldn't use this as an outdoor knife other than maybe for skinning. But certainly not whittling.
Eh, 3/5, this is a defensive blade pure and simple. I get the Bushcraft task or lack thereof in terms of the Ergos, however this is definitely meant to be a defensive blade. Totally agree with your rating though.....thanks for the Vid!! Keep em' coming!!
Thank you for giving the measurements. I'm tired of knife *reviewers* who say, Go look it up yourself. (This is important to me, cause I'm looking for a small knife under 6.25 inches for a survival kit.)
searchoverload8 Thanks. I was keenly interested in the Izula, but I found out that is precisely 6.25 inches. I need the knife to be under 6.25 inches, with sheath, in order to fit in the kit.
The ankle wrap on this knife is extremely well designed in case anyone was wondering. I would put a lanyard on the end though, if you have a generous amount of hair on your legs you'll pull it while gripping the rubber handle.
Daniel Stoner. I wouldn't say all their stuff is crap. I haven't had much from Gerber, but the things I've had from them are rather decent. Especially the Strong Arm. That blade is absolutely awesome. Yeah, I would like it if it had better steel, but the 420hc is actually holding up better than I was expecting. It's super tough (put it through a lot of hard work, and had no chipping or rolling), and the edge retention isn't *that* bad. From my usage, ot holds and edge just a little worse than my Mora Bushcraft Black. I'd give it a whirl before you start saying *all* their stuff is garbage.
hay bro can you tell me what to use to sharpen it cuz I just got one and I want to keep it sharp ,as you were saying you had to touch it up a bit to get it to cut the rope?
Hey gideonstactical, would you recommend the Gerber Ghostrike or the SOG Tangle as a back-up knife for small bushcraft task? I was looking to piggyback a skeletonized knife onto my CS Trailmaster.
I have owned this same knife for multiple years And I can tell you that the rubber on the handle will eventually come off I have had to redip my handle twice now and still it Starts to wear and eventually peels off I am considering Sand blasting the hand to give it texture then recipe I like the concept but agree the handle needs upgrading
Thanks for the good review. I think the knife would be ok and the sheath is a good design but the one thing that I don't like is that the knife edge stops well before the handle and so the cutting edge is shorter that it should be if you understand what I am trying to say. I have a bk 24 and an izula 2 and the length of the cutting edge is much better and comes close to the start of the handle.
I have a folder for cutting stuff so the edge holding ability of the ghost strike is not a concern for me. I bought this knife as an edc backup weapon if someone is fighting my right hand going for my gun. it rests in the small of my back ready for left handed draw. its so light and compact you dont even feel the knife even while sitting. The ghost strike is awesome for its intended purpose.
IF YOU WANT TO MAKE CUSTOM HANDGRIP (that fit your hand perfectly) it would easy,, USING what's there as a frame MIGHT THINK ABOUT DOING THAT SOMEDAY..... NICE REVIEW
I love mike and i wear it around my neck... now in 2020 this knife went up in price to mid/high 40$ and now this steel for that price is a bit of a stretch i think
been wearing mine for a few weeks now. the only thing i dont like about it is the handle sticks out just a little to much when its on my belt. there is like a 1" gap between the end of the knife handle and my belt. this makes it easy to grab but i catch it on all kinds of stuff if im not careful. like it i turn sideways going through a doorway and happen to slide up against the door frame, itll catch or if i sit in like a wood slat back kitchen chair i have to be careful when i got to stand up or lean forward also because of the gap and rubberized handle, my shirts tends to cling on it so it can be hard to actually pull it out quickly.
Great review. Thanks for making it. The handle issue is a very important point. Even people with smaller hands would probably have similar issues. These seam like a great knife, but they're a freekin' rip-off, in Australia. They cost AU$180! (About US$126) from the official Gerber distributor. (They don't seem to be available elsewhere, yet.)
It's a self-defense knife... Not meant as an EDC, survival, or camping knife. There's a difference. As a self-defense knife, compact, light weight, easy to conceal with a great sheath... Easily a 5 out of 5 * rating.
This knife is meant for self defense not edge retention/cutting tasks. 420HC is really high in toughness and corrosive resistance. Its meant to sit against your sweaty body and the tip won't break on bone if you have to use it for self defense. This is a niche product I dont get all the cutting tasks.
Sheath concept is great but bad execution. The retention bars dull the shit out of my knife. Can’t keep it sharp. Sucks you have to get an aftermarket sheath made to carry with confidence
Thanks for the review. I like the knife and think I'll buy it! Though, it gave me pause when you mentioned you couldn't wrap the tang with cord due to the sheath. Then I thought... why don't you just modify the sheath? After all, you are a bush crafter, right? Would be nice if you could get your pinky finger around the handle, for sure. Considering the minimal weight and price it seems like it would garner more than 3 out of 5 review score, at least based on my expected use of this knife. Can you actually recommend a better knife in this price and weight class that is full tang? The Shango you compare to is over $100. Thanks again.
I got the paracord and love it little bigger and maybe twice as stong and case is just great on both of theses knifes I really use mine hard and both have done well good vid cheers go paracord
It is a nice sheath, but also i find it kinda sucks. I got one today, came kinda dull and i got it nice and sharp and it was slicing paper no problem, a clean edge. Then i put it in the sheath and took it out and it dulled it to where it wasnt a clean cut.
That is a downright absurd price for that knife with its mystery (but certainly crappy) steel, especially in light of the much higher quality chinese knives you can now get for 1/4 to 1/3rd that price at gearbest, aliexpress, etc. And the video doesn't even do the one and only thing I wanted it to do, which is *show us* exactly how the sheath works to attach to the belt, so I can assess solid-ness. Gerber is synonymous with fecal gear, in my experience. I just ordered a D2 steel neck knife from at the eafengrow knife store at aliexpress for $14.95. This knife should be $12, tops.
I just can't get past the stainless steel. I've been buying stainless steel knives since I was a pretty young kid and didn't stop until I learned about carbon steel. Unfortunately and embarrassingly enough that really wasn't too long ago. I know that there are many different kinds of steel but I can't remember which ones are good. I don't know how guys like yourself do it. I just know that sharpening was always a problem until I found carbon steel. Mike in South Jersey
I would love to purchase the knife. However, it is illegal in California to conceal carry any knife, only if it is fixed. However, you can conceal carry folding knives. Sucks living in a liberal state.
Mami Burger I know your comment is old but what I do is I mount it on my belt in front of me that way my shirt can cover it to be concealed or I can tuck in my shirt which makes it visible and legal.
Come on, gerber. Cold steel mini tac bowie is $23 and shits all over this knife for edc. The only downside of the mini tac would be the slightly longer blade on the mini tac (3.625 vs 3.25) for purposes of edc.
In my city . Every one and there baby sister has a automatic pistol . you better hope the ONLY one at the end of the Ali is a wooden stump . Having said that I would take it to the River all day long
Good review, but i think people are judging it like a utility knife, its not really meant for heavy use, its edc/self defence it doesnt need to hold an edge that well
Exactly, its not meant to be a razor sharp knife to cut paper sheets, its meant to stab an attacker in a vital area such as the chest, neck or skull in a life or death situation, and I think its great for this purpose.
Agreed...it's a sticker and has one purpose and cutting cardboard ain't it lol 😆

Is the sheath made out of plastic or metal

It’s discontinued now unfortunately
I wear this at work and when out in public with my family. Definitely not a bush knife. The sheath is amazing.
This is an urban self defense knife.
I love mine. Most carried knife I've ever owned. Keep it on your belt, you'll forget it's there and have it when you need it.

diggin it. i'm really into these little fixed blades lately. super handy!

You may want to try an Esee Izula. It's more for bush tasks than this EDC blade.
searchoverload8 Thanks. I was keenly interested in the Izula, but I found out that is precisely 6.25 inches. I need the knife to be under 6.25 inches, with sheath, in order to fit in the kit.
Try the esee candiru
Also I turned my 2 belt loops inside Mounted to the very bottom of sheath now you can Mont upside-down this is very handy
The ankle wrap on this knife is extremely well designed in case anyone was wondering. I would put a lanyard on the end though, if you have a generous amount of hair on your legs you'll pull it while gripping the rubber handle.
I really appreciate your honest reviews.
I like the handle design on the gerber ghost strike fix blade
For me, this is for Defensive weaponry. A go to hidden blade. I'd use something else for the bush.
Thanks for the review. I thought it was very complete and well done.
Really good Review! It's a pitty the blade material don't hold the edge too much!
That's because Gerber stuff is all absolute crap, and has been since the late 2000s - we knew this.

@@SteveSmith-sd5hq how to best sharpen?
was it made for self defense or wood processing
I love this knife but the steel is just a bit soft for me.
Lol my tip snapped off just dropping it into a piece of lumber somehow
I was on the wall with this one, love the blade shape, but not hearing enough good on it to lay out what it costs. txh much.
hay bro can you tell me what to use to sharpen it cuz I just got one and I want to keep it sharp ,as you were saying you had to touch it up a bit to get it to cut the rope?

Hey gideonstactical, would you recommend the Gerber Ghostrike or the SOG Tangle as a back-up knife for small bushcraft task? I was looking to piggyback a skeletonized knife onto my CS Trailmaster.
Ok I'll wait no pressure still looking for the perfect knive
Gerber strongarm

Did it not come with the velcro strap you can attach it to to secure it as a boot knife?
I love mike and i wear it around my neck... now in 2020 this knife went up in price to mid/high 40$ and now this steel for that price is a bit of a stretch i think
Hey great video, But I think the blade length is listed at 3.3 Inches and overall total knife length is 6.9"
been wearing mine for a few weeks now. the only thing i dont like about it is the handle sticks out just a little to much when its on my belt. there is like a 1" gap between the end of the knife handle and my belt. this makes it easy to grab but i catch it on all kinds of stuff if im not careful. like it i turn sideways going through a doorway and happen to slide up against the door frame, itll catch or if i sit in like a wood slat back kitchen chair i have to be careful when i got to stand up or lean forward

The sheath's loops look like they fit through a very wide belt. Does anybody know the exact measure?
Great review. Thanks for making it. The handle issue is a very important point. Even people with smaller hands would probably have similar issues. Platatac has them for $79
Thanks for the review. Can’t you just trim back the sheath a little to paracord the handle?
Excellent review, thanks for your efforts
Great video! Thanks for doing these!
great review though have to pass on it for the reasons you stated.save me some money thanks.
Always solid reviews.
Hey really nice vid! I thought to buy this knive as a small backup knife for backcountry snowboarding in the winter.... Whats your opinion..?
+Roberto Castelli I would go with the White River Backpacker, but it is double the price.
it was just because the mounting was so great... and what is your opinion on the gerber paracord? because it is a little bit bigger..
They need to make a larger version with serrated version for military version
It's a self-defense knife... Not meant as an EDC, survival, or camping knife. There's a difference. As a self-defense knife, compact, light weight, easy to conceal with a great sheath... Easily a 5 out of 5 * rating.
This knife is meant for self defense not edge retention/cutting tasks. 420HC is really high in toughness and corrosive resistance. Its meant to sit against your sweaty body and the tip won't break on bone if you have to use it for self defense.
This is a niche product I dont get all the cutting tasks.
How is it as a throwing knife seems well balanced
Gerber finally is coming out with some decent products
No, they're not.
I love this knives !
Your's reviews are fantastic !
Ahahahaah ok

Sheath concept is great but bad execution. The retention bars dull the shit out of my knife. Can’t keep it sharp. Sucks you have to get an aftermarket sheath made to carry with confidence
Great review. Just ordered it.
I watched a Shot Show video on the new Gerber products and I was not impressed. Gerber is out for me. Thanks-Ted
I got the paracord and love it little bigger and maybe twice as stong and case is just great on both of theses knifes I really use mine hard and both have done well good vid cheers go paracord
would you recommend it?
look outside upgrading the handle. minimize the sheath so you can paracord the handle deeper then the original design.
It is a nice sheath, but also i find it kinda sucks. I got one today, came kinda dull and i got it nice and sharp and it was slicing paper no problem, a clean edge. Then i put it in the sheath and took it out and it dulled it to where it wasnt a clean cut.
How wide are the belt loops?
I think the ergonomic rating was a little unfair. It wasn't designed to be used for repetitive tasks.
I saw someone who said it would lose its sharpness after putting it into the sheath and out again
what is a lashed itch self defense knife?
Thank you SO much for making this
Great little knife thanks for sharing.
what is the thikness of the sheet?
i would get this if the sheath was more compact similar to the izula sheath
That is a downright absurd price for that knife with its mystery (but certainly crappy) steel, especially in light of the much higher quality chinese knives you can now get for 1/4 to 1/3rd that price at gearbest, aliexpress, etc. And the video doesn't even do the one and only thing I wanted it to do, which is *show us* exactly how the sheath works to attach to the belt, so I can assess solid-ness. What would make a better get home, last ditch knife, esee izula or gerber?
fran kie Izula
@@gideonstactical why? This one is designed for it. What makes the izula better with less blade length and piercing tip. Really curious

Awesome review !!
Where can you get this one though where can I order 1 please comment back thank you
You could still wrap the back gap with paracord
I would love to purchase the knife. However, it is illegal in California to conceal carry any knife, only if it is fixed. However, you can conceal carry folding knives. Sucks living in a liberal state.
Why don't you move
Mami Burger I know your comment is old but what I do is I mount it on my belt in front of me that way my shirt can cover it to be concealed or I can tuck in my shirt which makes it visible and legal.
Good thing I love sharpening knives 🤗
Great info! Keep it up!

If you dremel a choil i think it will be more cuomftrebal couse den your pinky is on the handle.
Could you use this as throwing knife?
BaD Bac0n yes but throwing knives are special balanced so it will not work as well as a real throwing knife
Do you have it still
1095 version or 440 stainless?
fran kie 420HC
I really like the knife but it dulls to quickly for me
Come on, gerber. Cold steel mini tac bowie is $23 and shits all over this knife for edc. The only downside of the mini tac would be the slightly longer blade on the mini tac (3.625 vs 3.25) for purposes of edc.
I want an Izula blade with this exact sheath. Lol.
Love your Dog!!!
Back up boot knife 5/5.
Great review. And I always look forward to seeing that great looking, wood chewing dog of yours!!! LOLOL :)
