  • Sixty years after Ernest Marples and Richard Beeching ended the branch passenger service between Dereham and Wells-Next-The-Sea, the Mid-Norfolk Railway are setting out to reverse their work.
Back To School is a public appeal to upgrade the Norfolk rural branch station and County School and reconnect it to the international rail network. Can you help the Mid-Norfolk Railway complete a 50 year dream, and do what even the national government cannot? Let's Reverse Beeching and get Back To School!

My first train journey was a Santa Special at County school in 1993, when trains were still running over the mile or so of preserved track.

About half a mile of track was laid using the planning permission when it was first approved. This was used by the F&DRS and then the GER (1989) Ltd until the late 1990s, when the site was closed. Sadly, the materials used at the time were more of what was available, rather than what was really needed. As a result, most of what was laid isn't really suited to modern use. This is why, from the second part of this project which will focus on the second 1/4 mile southwards, the plan is to restore the line to more modern standards.

@@CountySchoolSM Must have been along that half mile then! I have no memory of it, but my Mum told me it was in a carriage pulled by a diesel shunter two runs out until Santa got on, then he gave out gifts to the boys and girls. I have a photo of it somewhere, amazing the things you end up holding onto.
