Hey Calvin I’m set to start my degree at WGU in Cybersecurity on June 1st 2022. I might need some help if you don’t mind we can get in touch as I might really need help at the beginning to understand the system and few questions and tips from someone already in the program
OMG, my IT Pocahontas 😍. I had applied to WGU 3 years ago and they kept giving me the run around, even went through 2 different advisors. It was the worst and most discouraging experience for me with a school. I enrolled at a local college (online) and have been thriving since. I’m not down talking WGU the entity, but they should seriously look into the “first time experience” for new people not only coming in, but wanting to come in.
Lol "IT Pocahontas", thank ya! 🎶I can code with all the languages of the wind 🎶 lol Sorry to hear that happened to you though. You might have gotten some subpar employees or something unfortunately; I do think most of the ppl at WGU are chill & good at their job, but I have hit a few that made me wonder how they got the job in the first place lol. But congrats for being adaptable & able to redirect to a school that was right for you! At the end of the day, all that matters is that you get where you want to go/ accomplish what you want & it looks like you're well on your way! 👏🏼😊
@@ITGirlll You are so effing motivating, I swear!! I’m learning how to code more now to be a triple threat lol. I have well over 15 years of experience, but mostly because I just love helping people. Helping humans and make an impac, even if it’s small
@@elthanos879 Aw thanks, you as well; & yeah - get it! 👏🏼 Helping is what it's about - like Audrey said, "we've got 2 hands - one to help ourselves and one to help others."
19:00 - Yes! I completely agree! You have to constantly keep your training, educations and skills fresh. Never stop utilizing them especially because YOU are the investment!
I am in a different program. I am going to become a Teacher. I would love to accelerate but it would not be very good for me. I just am going to take my time due to kids, and work, but I do think that next term I could fit in more coursework, maybe 1 or 2 more classes.
I think that's a great plan! Hopefully, you're still at it & it's not a race, we all do what works for us & the end result will still be you bettering yourself 😊
Great question! I've never used Course Hero, so I can't speak to their helpfulness, however, if you're starting WGU, I wouldn't spend any additional money on helper items. You get free access to so many helpful sites, not to mention the WGU library, that I'm sure there will be multiple sites you'll find useful for this degree. Personally, the most useful for me was Udemy, followed by PluralSight & Linda, but you also get free (or limited time free) access to every student version of sites :)
@@ITGirlll thank you much for replying. Do we get free access to udemy as WGU students? And how about pluralsight? You bought the yearly plan or something?
@Franny Sorry, I didn't see this, but here's a link to the one I got. It was just basic & I sold it after my last proctored exam, but it did the job! smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MVY1H9V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hi! Nice vid btw! I appreciate your experiences and input on being as a student in WGU. However what do you think about WGU for students that just graduate from high school? I've been hearing that people just don't recommend it at all because you NEED work expierence (based off the degree you apply to) to get through these courses. I'm planning on applying for a BA cyber security degree, however hearing that people just don't reccomend applying to this school without work expierence is kind of demotivating me to attend. I would really appreciate it if I got input on this, and it would help me be more comfortable on deciding on other options besides WGU. Thanks!!
Thanks & glad you enjoyed the vid! Great question! There's a lot that can go into this, but ultimately I think it depends on the type of person you are. WGU does have some enrollment requirements like needing work experience or a previous degree of some kind typically; however, there is also a sister school you can attend to waive those requirements I believe, which an enrollment counsellor can tell you more about. I've only come across it in threads, & can't remember the name rn unfortunately. But it's what WGU alum parents have their kids do so they can go to WGU when they graduate high school or concurrently while they're still in school. Also if you have any certs already, they might take that into consideration as "work"... Def check w/ a counsellor though & let us know what they say! :)
Hi! So I am actually one of those people that is currently doing this. I'm working on the BS Cybersecurity and Information Assurance degree without any IT experience or any previous degrees. Basically they require you to attend WGU Academy first, and once you graduate you automatically get accepted to WGU. WGU Academy can take as long or as short as you want, though it will likely be around 2 months (ish) since the first month is a Communication and online school success course (called PACA). The second course is the CompTIA A+ certification course.
I believe I completed it about 3 months into my 1st term… I did a vid where I broke down my full degree here if it helps: How to Get a Software Developer Degree in (NOT) 8 Mins ua-cam.com/video/boI7xetclh8/v-deo.html 😊
Great question! On average, I'd say it took me about 4 days or 48hrs per course probably... I did between 8 & 10hrs days since I had the time then. However, if I had been balancing a different job or had other obligations, I probably would have cut that down to 4 - 8hrs per day & it probably would have taken me 1.5 - 2 weeks per course. But whatever time it takes is okay - all that matters is we get where we want to be in the end 😊
Great question! The certifications are set as what we call a "PA" for certain courses. A PA is a performance assessment and it just means you had to demonstrate your competency in the course by performing a task (in these cases, actually sitting for the exams). So, they are automatically included in your program, but you have to pass the tests to get them like anyone else. You do have I think 3 chances to pass them without directly paying though, so that is one of the bonuses from taking them through the school.
Great video! Very informative. How long did it take you to graduate? I'm trying to get a ball park for myself. I would be starting from the beginning.. Thanks 😊
Glad you enjoyed it & thanks for watching! All together & excluding my break, about a year. If you really end up enjoying building computers though, you'll go much faster. Definitely check out Mike Meyer's Udemy course on CompTia A+ if you don't, and it'll help you plow through even faster!
That's kinda a tricky question since WGU gives you free access to Udemy, Pluralsight & Linda (among other resources), and they definitely help you pass cert exams. If you mean strictly just the resources assigned for a specific course... I think you could... I can't say for certain though, because I prefer watching things to reading an ebook for learning certain concepts (plus, staring at the screen for so long can really do a number on your eyes). But I think for one (maybe 2...) of the certs I did just read the book & passed just fine 🙂
I used to be a nurse, but then I got laid off at the end of 2009 at the height of the recession. Fucking hate capitalism with a passion, I'm a Communist. Regardless, I knew I had to do something and I had been trying to get into IT since 2001. I happened to be living in NYC at the time when 9/11 happened and that dashed my hopes of being able to go to school then. I moved away from NYC and ran with my nursing career for a total of 14 years. After 2009, I got on unemployment which was very generous at the time due to the recession. I spent 2010 and 2011 getting an associates degree in IT/Internet Security from a shitty diploma mill school in my area. I was also extremely self motivated, and got a total of 13 certifications in the span of about a year. These were: A+ Net+ Sec+ Server+ Linux+/LPIC-1 MCITP: Enterprise Administrator (5 certifications for this title) CCENT CCNA I was going to get the SQL server admin certs, but my job at the time didn't care about it, so I never sat for the exam. My formula was 1.) Watch an entire CBT Nuggets course for the exam 2.) Read the "official" book for that certification 3.) Read an alternate book to the official one 4.) Take a ton of practice exams (no brain dumps) until I score 95+ consistently 5.) Sit for the exam This worked well for me back then, but I got lazy at my last job, stayed there 11 years, huge mistake. They ended up fucking me over for the IT manager position, so I quit and now I'm working 100% remote as a Cybersecurity Engineer for a Fortune 500 company pulling well into 6 figures, and I live in a tiny rural town too. It has been great and I wish I quit that job sooner. I'm now working on getting Certified Ethical Hacker and CompTIA CYSA+ next. Maybe I'll do some Azure and AWS next, but my goal has always been getting the CISSP and then when that's done, go for 3 years and get my JD. I think having all that Cybersecurity stuff PLUS passing the bar exam will just throw my salary will past the 250K-400K range. That with nearly no debt and low living expenses. At least I hope.
It's funny that you said you don't like deadlines, but you are competitive; that means, you don't like outside demands, you like being the underdog, and you enjoy the challenge. Great energy and great information. Thank you.
