It's also worth mentioning that the Baltic states are European Union states, so they are part of the EU's Common Security and Defense Policy, which includes mutual defense like Nato. That means any conflict with the Baltic states would not only include Nato, but also Ireland, Austria, Malta, Cyprus, and, most crucially, Sweden and Finland. In particular, Sweden and Finland's ability to reinforce the Baltic states form the north would be strategically key.
There would be no help from Finland, since that would mean war with Russia, and during war, Finland wouldn't have anything extra to give. Everything would be needed in national defense.
Too bad Sweden has thrown it's once massive defence force in the garbage can. We would need all our forces since the step after a Baltic invasion inevitably would be Finland and Sweden. There is noone coming to help... not you, not us.

If the Russians attack the Baltics the conflict is already escalated. Their would not be any thought that attacking air defenses or any other relevant Russian military forces, other than strategic nuclear forces (or any attack with nuclear weapons), would be a risky escalation.
So I just watched this again based on the current Ukraine issues and would like to see if your assessment has changed. We have learned a lot. Apparently, in 1990, the West-German government actually received an offer from Moscow to give Kaliningrad back to Germany, but Berlin refused the offer. That would have changed the scenario in this video a lot.
The region was almost entirely Russian. Not German at all at that point. Also, Germany was still under a magnifying glass internationally and didn't want to have anything to do with expansion (so it was well timed to be able to say: "Look, they refused it when we offered. See? So rightfully ours for all time.") Fun fact, not long ago Germans from Russia thought about making it a German cultural center again and started buying up properties and settling there. Once the Russian government found out this was happening they didn't allow them to do it anymore.
It's not something we know for certain happened, it was reported in the media according to some secret inside informant, so nobody knows how accurate it really is. And yes, Kaliningrad had a majority Russian population even back then, but so did Northern Kazakhstan and various other parts which would later end up not being part of Russia when the USSR collapsed. Well, I think we've now seen that Russia is a paper tiger. Its strength on paper vastly exaggerates what it can bring to the battlefield in practice. It's equipment is poorly maintained, its troops poorly trained and with low morale, and its stores of modern munitions tiny. Furthermore, its vast size is actually a disadvantage as it needs to spread its forces thinly to cover vulnerabilities along an immensely long land border - a problem only further exacerbated by its relatively small population given its size. Add in that its population is aging, shrinking and poor and it has little capacity to sustain a full-scale war. Its economy is almost wholly reliant on fossil fuel exports, and thus very vulnerable, as we've seen. If it struggles this much with Ukraine - a poor nation, outside NATO - I think any direct conflict with NATO will make it look like Iraq in the Gulf War.
russia is winning in ukraine but its costing them more than expected, why? because russia underestimated ukraines dedication and also sent old soviet junk and conscript soldiers, Russia can win if they use their better weapons and seasoned soldiers, Russia wants big prize winnings while waging the cheapest bet possible

And if you realised kalliningrad is a place which is at sea level and surrounded by flat area that means it is extremely vurnerable for an offence and a blockade at Gotland island would choke it pretty much easily from naval supplies. I don't think nato is the one who is vulnerable here.

In theory when one NATO member is attacked other countries are supposed join the war. The problem is there was a similar pact before WW2 between Poland, England, and France. In 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, but France and England decided to wait and build up the army instead of attacking. I'm afraid it can happen to NATO as well.

@@Rahul_G.G. Finland has quite large army and Nordics would fight as one force, so there wouldn't be that much to worry about. Russian military is not in size it used to be, it is impossible for Russia to concentrate enough power against Baltics / Nordics since it would leave rest of the border wide open. Just to give you some idea of the Nordic scale, Finland and Norway together have roughly 2000 000 men war time reserves, this is only 2 Nordic country together. That is actually the size of Russian military strength, to bring it to the scale. So you see, Nordics doesn't lack the power to fight Russia, but Nordics doesn't have enough resources to do it. Then again Nordics gets those resources from Europe and USA so the war could go on and on without end for decades even if it would be only Nordics fighting it.

Yes, and nobody wants it. That's why he hopes that nobody actually will defend Baltics. And that would undermine the whole idea of NATO. It's his real goal, not the territory of Baltics itself.
As long as the Baltics play nice with the Russian minorities there I really don't see any reason why Russia should ever invade them, apart from strategic value there isn't any considerable economic value for Russia. The only instance I see Russia invading the Baltics is if it really feels threatened by NATO, in which case it will do and station tactical nuclear missiles there, I doubt European countries Will be willing to risk a nuclear exchange with Russia for the Baltics, some may be fool enough but not all, not even the US will as I don't believe there will be sufficient popular support in the US for a nuclear exchange with Russia. Remember, any HOT WAR between NATO and Russia will go nuclear because conventionally Russia may not win on the long run because economically and due to demography NATO combined is more powerful and thus it represents an existential threat to Russia.
I think the thing that you left out was Poland. They have direct connectivity to Lithuania and will likely commit heavily to stop Russian expansionism. Their military would be large enough to slow down an attack by 50K land forces and provide direct land access to the Southern Baltic States allowing reinforcement directly through Poland and Germany.
Realistically, poland will not be able to hold the sowalki gap as russian forces move from belarus to kaliningrad and vice versa, effectively cutting off the baltic states from rest of nato.
@@realpolitics527 _realistically_ Belarus is a separate country. What next, you're going talk about how russian forces can move to Poland _through Ukraine_ maybe?
@@realpolitics527 Here is the thing. In the scenario he described, it was 50K Russian Troops against 18K Lithuanian Troops. And that significant NATO forces were very far away. They are not. Can Poland defeat the entire Russian Army? Of course not. On the other hand will LOTS AND LOTS of Tomahawk Missiles and artillery turn Kaliningrad into a very large smoking crater? Yes, it will. Which is my point here. There will be a balance or Russia would invade today. Russia does not because things are in much more of a balance than has been stated here.

FYI, Russian Roskosmos collaborates a lot with NASA, EASA, JAXA and other space agencies and private companies around the world. When in 2014 US announced broad economic sanctions against Russia the heads of NASA and Roskosmos met a least 2 times in US and Russia to discuss how to continue the collaboration despite the sanctions. The last news I`ve heard on the collaboration topic is that, sadly, the planned Soyuz launch in 2020 with Oneweb satellites was cancelled due to Oneweb`s bankrupcy. This was a mutually beneficial deal, but it failed due to poor financial managment of Oneweb.
Small update on Suwalki (lit. Suvalkai) corridor. At the moment russians CANNOT move through this corridor. Both Lithuania and Poland belongs to Schengen area (border-less area between most of Europe nations) and any russian wanting to enter it has to get visa and so on. . THE ONLY freedom of movement via land to Kaliningrad is via train from Minsk (Belarus). This train must move without stopping in Lithuania (the only place where it stops is capital Vilnius, for lithuanians border check). This rail line is used for military equipment movement as well as to move civilian passengers. But as I said - without legal possibility to enter Schengen area. . Suwalki corridor definitely would be used in military conflict, as Kaliningrad is something like North Korea (heavily militarized zone). All sorts of weapons and brigades are there despite the fact that neither any Baltic state nor Poland pose any threat to this russian district. . As a local of Lithuania I was a bit anxious in 2017 when ~100,000 military troops (officially only ~15,000) started military exercise next to Lithuanian border titled "WEST" (ZAPAD). I htink it is clear message who is aggressor in the region and who is trying to defend at all costs.
jimmy hopkins but hey, Sweden would start selling weapons, parts and iron to everyone again, making a pretty penny out of war while pretending to be a neutral sheep.
That's why Poland is key in such scenario. There are many options if Poland decides to be active. Even invasion of Kaliningrad. With new investments in their army, Poland would crush Kaliningrad. And thus everything changes.
This border has been a key issue for Russian security. With flat plains, it is a vulnerable spot for Russia. This is where it focuses military exercises. It is a place where conflict is likely, especially with Russia's actions in Crimea and Ukraine.
Mia they would have to potentially safeguard other areas now. Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and the whole easternmost portions of Russia would be extremely vulnerable if the US got involved.
That choke point is not a problem For nato i think in a situation of War kalliningrad is the most vurnerable to a land offense. Also as you said it is a pretty flat land

While attacking the Baltic States would definitely result in a short-term success and their occupation, Russia has no chance of winning a long tug-of-war conflict against all of NATO - even if some members will chicken out, which is unlikely. There is no sufficient manpower\technological\economic potential in Russia to achieve long-term occupation and\or annexation of the Baltic States.
It would come down to China. If the US does try to ‘contain’ China’s international expansion, Russia can be a handy way to preoccupy European allies and tie military assets in place. NATO can’t attack Russia for fear of nuclear reprisal, but can’t empty out military assets or Russia could simply walk in. This is why the NATO expansion and hostility toward Russia will prove a serious error. In repudiating Russia as a culturally ‘Western’ nation, and undermining their military security - resulting in the annexation of Crimea as pushback - an enormous gift has been handed to China as it seeks to displace the US as the dominant global superpower. Arrogance and stupidity has always been the downfall of empires.
@Massimo Hack China has already been talking about war, what are you talking about? Biden is going to bring more wars to global stage like he promised.
Well, if a nuclear exchange occurred, it will all be over for everyone - everywhere. Even if/when the Russian military was pushed out of the Baltic states - dear God, the devastation would be CATASTROPHIC. Win the battle, lose everything. It would take 40+ years to rebuild, and with millions of casualties. This is a war NO ONE should EVER wish for. WW2 would look like a day at the beach in comparison. "We're free!" say the survivors, surrounded by utter destruction and ashes and a guaranteed famine that would take a monster effort from the West to resolve. Not my idea of 'victory.'
Binkov’s battlegrounds explored this Even without USA in a situation with no Ukrainian resistance, assuming the EU can stand together and react properly, Russia has no chance, there’s no way either that they’d pull their sino Russian border troops either

The principle of M.A.D. still holds as the core of NATO’s defence. It was never designed to stop Russia via conventional forces; they are simply meant to slow Moscow down whilst a coordinated nuclear response is mounted. The goal is not to stop Russia but to impose deterrence by making the costs of invasion unbearable. If Russia ever did launch an attack the result would be a foregone conclusion on day one of the invasion: either total victory or mutual annihilation.
@Trunk McEight a war between russia and nato (without nukes) it will very similar to 2ww with russia instead of germany, russia will steamroll east europe initially, maybe they can reach vistola or oder, but then the infinite superiority of nato industry, manpower, resources will enter the field and russia will sentence to death

Fun fact, not long ago Germans from Russia thought about making it a German cultural center again and started buying up properties and settling there.

In theory when one NATO member is attacked other countries are supposed join the war. The problem is there was a similar pact before WW2 between Poland, England, and France. Also no one wins wars without mobilizing invasion force of men and machinery, that is just a fact. This is the lesson learned from WWII and modern conflicts.
Finland would need to help itself first before trying to defend any other nation. Your country would be the apex of any potential invasion from Russia
Imagine 20 000 russian troops parading in Cuba, Canada or something.
Not saying it's wrong, but this is the kind of stuff that Americans would see as imperialist or sth like that if it came from the other side.
Stephen Jenkins in addition, nobody seems to acknowledge the people in between. There’s a reason why the Baltics joined NATO.
. Those Americans in the Baltic’s aren’t an invasion force but a deterrent. They make it impossible for Russia to open up a military engagement without starting ww3. They idea that the US protecting smaller states right to exist is imperialism’s is complete horseshit.

The clay ain't worth it, both ways. You could say it's their saving grace.
Putin is one of the smartest ones out there! If he sees a good opening hes probs gonna take it!

All sorts of weapons and brigades are there despite the fact that neither any Baltic state nor Poland pose any threat to this russian district.
.

These piss ant countries couldn't save themselves if Russian sdiers lined up and pissed over their border.

Binkov’s battlegrounds explored this
Even without USA in a situation with no Ukrainian resistance, assuming the EU can stand together and react properly, Russia has no chance, there’s no way either that they’d pull their sino Russian border troops either

As a Latvian I am suprised about this video but glad you made it, even I had been thinking about Kaliningrad I hadn't thought so much about the Suwalki gap.
The notion that NATO will risk the death millions of its citizens to stop Russia from invading the Baltic is ludicrous to me. Russia took Crimea. and NATO could do fuck about it. don't say Ukraine wasn't part of NATO nonsensem Of Russia feels NATO is pushing too close to its sphere of influence they more than likely will ennex lands in the Baltics, let's see than if NATO values Lithuania enough to risk all out M.
