Hello! I'd like to ask you a question if I may. Let's consider the possibility that the Russian Federation collapses as a consequence of Putin's war in Ukraine, how likely would it be then that Circassia breaks away as an independant state?
@@hugodesrosiers-plaisance3156 it is a very low proximity of recreating ethnically solid Circassia nowadays, since Circassians (inc. Adyghe and Kabarda people), even summed with Turkic people (Balkar and Karachai), are a minority in the Western Caucassus region compared to Russians. That problem could be solved by repatriation of million Circassian descendants from Turkey, but many of them already became Turkish, so, creating independent Circassia would need repelling millions of Russians from Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachaevo-Cherkessia, and most notably Krasnodar, because without Krasnodar, or at least its southern half, there is no option to connect separated Circassian republics. AND then you'll probably have to separate Circassian and Turkic people, which again would be an administrative nightmare
@Rustem Zholdybalin you can make a a state which would be democratic with Circassian identity which encourages Circassians to immigrate to it with ease so that all the Circassians would go back to their historic homeland and the state would maintain minority rights
Finally. Someone who called a spade a spade. Perhaps the only non-Circassian channel/individual to not dance around the word genocide. Thank you for shedding light on our history, very few people know who we are and what our ancestors had to go through.
On a Sunday morning, I watched this the first thing and my blood boiled listening to all the atrocities which nobody in the west or further east is even aware of … sorry that you guys have to go through this … Insha Allah, the souls of your ancestors gets jannah 🙏🏼
Not only did the Circassian genocide cause the annihilation of the Ubykh tribe, but it also led to the Ubykh language's extinction. The last speaker of this very unique language, Tevfik Esenç, died in Turkey in 1992, and with him the language went extinct.
@@quintu5 Esenç was actually very insistent on preserving as much of the language as possible. A combined effort with a French-Georgian linguistics professor tried to preserve the many unique aspects of the Ubykh language, especially its phonology. You can still find many of his recordings here on UA-cam. Unfortunately though only recording and documenting a language cannot save it from linguistic death or extinction.
We thank the people of Georgia and their government, for their stance against Russian imperialism alone, they too had suffered Russian incursions into their lands. We’ll never forget 1864, and keep on trying to make the Turkish government here recognize the genocide, whose banner is home the largest diaspora of Circassians is located in the world. After fleeing from the Russian empire, many circassians took refuge in the Ottoman empire, where they became highly influential. They produced great politicians such as Hayreddin Pasha, powerful military generals such as Ahmet Anzavur Pasha and great Intellectuals and poets such as Ahmad Shawqi many many others.
Especially in the second half of the nineteenth century, the number of Circassian slaves imported from the Caucasus to Istanbul actually increased, due to the forced migration of the Caucasian population that was under threat by the Russian state.57 The sale of children was widespread among the Circassians, mosty among those who already belonged to the slave class.
It wasn't refuge to be frank, it was more of a "trade". The Ottomans bought what was remaining of the Circassian population who were forcefully exiled by Russians. The Ottomans were well aware of the Circassian warriors capabilities as they've encountered them at the times of Mamluks. In order for capable Circassian men to feed their families, they were offered to join the Ottoman army, fighting in the Levant, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia.. etc. Not to mention that almost half of our ancestors lost their lives either from hunger, thirst, disease or drowning across the black sea. Of course, nowadays, most of the Circassian population lives in Diaspora, mainly in Turkey, Jordan and other surrounding countries.
Turks didn't help Circassians. Just like their Mongol and tatar brethren, they wanted slaves. Turks call typical turkish women "Kara-kura". Circassians women have white skin, often light eye and hair color. Those are written records of slave traders why they aimed for Circassians.
@@ahmadabida7427 interestingly those circassian people who were sent to bulgaria became part of the başıbozuk (nut jobs) units who were irregular troops usually used for suppressing dissent and some of them were settled in varna by the ottomans who dislocated local christians to do that, it is said that the circassians were unusually brutal against the local christians, maybe bulgarians being a slavic orthodox people reminded them the russians who knows. I always find this detail in bulgarian history very interesting because ottomans tried to use circassians as an assimilating force against the christian minorities who they thought would eventually secede but it turned out to be a great mistake as the unusual brutality was used as en excuse by russians to declare war which was definetely catastrophic for any muslims and turks, especially for those who were left in the balkans
Love the visual at 0:52. As Circassians, the metaphor of the "Black Sea being a grave" to many of our people is something we’ve often heard from our grandparents. Some in our family used to refuse eating any seafood that came from the Black Sea for some time, saying that they had the blood of our ancestors on them. They often said that the shores of Northern Black Sea and the Turkish shores where the deportees arrived were full of dead bodies and "red from blood and flesh" for days.
The atrocities committed against your people really do break my heart. I wish there had been an intervention by Muslim powers but we ourselves were in a position of weakness. May Allah swt bless you and your family.
@yağızkart2 ❤ May I ask where you live? There are some circassians in egypt, but most are in Turkey, correct? Is the circassian culture still alive? There's not much I know about circassians if I'm being honest, and it's not fair to a people to only be known by a genocide.

Americans are talking about murdered Native Americans. Belgians are talking about the Kongolese. Et cetera. Nobody in Russia is talking about the genocides of North Caucasians. I'm not even talking about schools, I haven't seen nothing about this in Russian at all.
That is just one topic of what Russia really did in Caucasus. Many more tragedies happened in North-East Cuacasus and Georgia, not to mention the fake reason of annexation of Georgian Kingdoms.
@damnmodebadzeYou clearly don’t, given you assisted the Russians in their genocide and claim the lands of their brothers. Circassia is Adyghe, not Russian, and Abkhazia is Apsua, not Kartvel.
I did a whole giant study on this whole topic, its truly a tragedy but the Circassians put up one hell of a fight. The whole thing reminds me of the native Americans wars as it does happen contemporaranously
I see the conflicts as very different. There was a huge difference in technology and numbers between Native Americans and US government and consecutive waves of settlers, especially in the Central plains of US. The Circassians had endured in that area for probably 5000 years, defeating multiple invasions. There was no natural settler wave, everything was forced, everything was avoidable. Also the Circassians were a sizeable population considering the mountainous area, all they lacked to stop the Russians was cannons.
As an american I don't see much meaningful difference. Genocide for economic benefit, or genocide for national prestige, are both still genocide. How it was done matters little, the Native Americans and Native Circassians are still dead or fundamentally reduced.
@@Bayard1503 what? In both instances the native people were genocided so that their homeland could be colonized, there is no diference - both were cold and calculated slaughter of natives.

This is one of your best videos. I found the part about Zass sending skulls to his "academic friends in Berlin" particularly chilling, even more so considering it in the context of the twisted history of the pseudoscience of phrenology. As a Pole, I also have a sad reflection on how the Russian Empire (like many other empires) was using the people it conquered and oppressed on one of its edges, against others in a similar situation elsewhere. For example, some Circasians in Russian service took part in putting down the Polish uprising in 1831 (one particularly interesting insurgent - Antonina Tomaszewska reportedly distinguished herself in a skirmish against a Circassian cavalry unit). After that uprising, many Poles were forcibly conscripted into the imperial army and sent to fight in the Caucasus.
Teofil Łapiński was fighting for Circassians around late 1850s. Previously he was one of many Polish volunteers fighting in 1848 for Hungarians, then he was engaged in organising Polish troops during Crimean War. He also took part in sadly unsuccessful attempt of delivering weapons for January Uprising by the sea route.

Six: It's very telling, at least for me, that in Russian political spheres main adversary of Russia is called "Anglo-Saxons" - British Empire is the only one that can stand side by side with Russian Empire when ruthlessness, cultural insensitivity and exploitation of local populace are concern; in any of this categories one of those empires is first while other is close second, usually with Spanish Empire being distant third Seven: Russian Empire is the only one that never ceased in its efforts to grow larger; yes, some other empires were checked in those efforts by other powers, to the point of these other powers becoming empires of their own, but even when some power was utterly destroyed during its empire making phase one can find in political spheres of that power glimpses of idea that maybe it's time to stop growing.

@Kabardian Salafi As if I am not mistaken, you are saying that Israel is not a state. This interpretation concerns you, Circassians have no problem with the state of Israel. You cannot say this with your Circassian identity to the interpretation of a Jew who supports the Circassians. You cannot marginalize someone whose mother is Circassian by saying that you are not one of us, some things happen not by blood but by belonging and feelings. We do not live in the Middle Ages. This is radical. Adige Xabzes is inclusive, understanding and does not marginalize.
@Kabardian Salafi I agree on that, but what I'm talking about is different. Xabze has not been taken into account, yes. He has a half-Circassian child. I cannot marginalize this person as half-Circassian.
As a Circassian, it’s a great honor to seeing one of the greatest history channel made a video about us. World community do not have any idea about Circassian culture, mythology and this awful tragedy of course. So this video will be a trigger point to make people search about us. Thank you sir!
I've read some articles over the years that claim the Circassian, that were banished from the area. Were moved to israel. And they became the large majority of the palestianins. IS that true? Do u know anything about where that idea started from?
@@ranxerox76D Actually not only Israel. They forced to move to Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and Turkey (which has the biggest Circassian population around the world about 5 million) through the Black Sea on ships. However Palestinese story is fake. There is a region/town called “Kaffar Kama” or “Qafar Kama” in Israel that most of the Circassian people living. They don’t even live in the same region with Palestinian also they are closer with Jewish families than Palestinian ones. As a cultural identity, Circassians have a sense of ownership to country that accepted them. Since 1864 (Circassian Genocide) they played huge roles in the histories of the countries they settled. Examples are Turkey and Jordan. In both countries especially in Turkey they were soldiers and had a huge role in Turkish War of Independence (search Cherkes Ethem) there are countless names that Circassian rooted soldiers/commanders helped to establish the modern Turkish Republic. Before that they serviced in Ottoman Empire too as soldiers and servants to Sultan himself. In Jordan they still serve as guard of the king and loyal members. (search Journey of the Prince Ali) From the day they settled in Israel they do not intervene in the conflict between Israel and Palestine. As I said they close to Israel side. For that, Israel government has a special treatment for Circassian people for being with their side and to region they living. Even most of them are Muslims. Also you may want to look for Circassians in history stage by searching Memluk Empire which had Circassian generals and rulers. I think most of the sources are in Turkish but you can translate it into English using google translate or yandex. If you got any questions you may ask. I will try to answer as i know. Thank you!
As a Circassian, I thank you for this excellent video… our ancestors fight, beyond courage, has not been in vain. Hope we/next generations could keep their flag high, remain worthy of it 🤲🏻
I have been a great fan of your content and I am so pleased that you have decided to cover the Circassian genocide, which has unfortunatelly become almost forgotten and unknown despite being so enormously bloody and tragic. I have been talking to people about this for years and literally no-one else who wasn't circassian had heard of it. I have many circassian friends, my wife is Circassian, I'm very passionate about this subject. The sad thing is that Russia has not really changed since this time. They dont regret this genocide, they have carried on the same policies in the Caucasus right through to the Chechen wars. They are now doing the same in Ukraine.
@Kabardian Salafi well Adyghe khabze forbids many things that circassians do now anyway (I.e father and son sitting eating at the same table etc), it doesn't stop someone being Circassian. Circassians intermarry with Turks and Arabs etc all the time anyway. The main thing for her family is that I respect and understand and to a certain extent follow khabza values. I have even given our son a Circassian name and encourage Kabardian Adigabze as his first language (he speaks better Adigabze than any other 6 year old we have encountered in KBR...)
@Kabardian Salafi no but you said she can't be circassian on the basis she married a non-circassian when in fact many circassians marry non-circssians such as Turks.
The Circassians defended their lands so fiercely against the russian empire that it took 101 years. This is the longest war in russia history. Circassian resistance war should be a movie
Exactly, this story that millions had to go through and still a fresh memory to many, deserves a movie of its own. Maybe the folks here in Turkey will someday make a movie about it. There are many Circassian actors, screenwriters, artists and choreographers who have the power and logistics to take up such a project, many famous too, but they have not made a big production about it, yet.
Maybe if they didn't resist so fiercely they would still be around. But noooo, those mountain savages just had to resist for the sake of their so-called "pride".
I'm not Circassian, it just makes me happy to see that atrocities and injustices like these are brought to light and aren't forgotten. Greetings from Sweden, Leve Cirkassien! 😇
I came to know Circassians through there music and dance. And lord, what a beautiful culture it is. It made reflect, how much has humanity lost to wars and genocides that wiped out some of the tribes and cultures of the world!?
Keep spreading this knowledge. Most people don't even know this. They watch Circassian dances and think them as Russian when in fact Circassians had no choice. What happened to Circassians should never be forgotten
My passion to this channel even increased after this video explaining the heartbreaking destiny of our ancestors... Many of us (including me and my parents) still don't eat any seafood caugh from the Black Sea thinking that the fish in Black Sea may've fed with the flesh of our ancestors corpses... It is a glory, proud and encouraging for us seeing someone finally talking about us and describing what happened to our people with the word of "genocide" as it should be. As a half Adyghe and half Abkhazian, I can clearly say that the Black Sea is "black" at most to us... Many thanks for all of your efforts...
@@Circassiangurl2002 Nice to meet you then 🤗 It is actually very sad to ask this question as we are scattered all over the world from our homeland, but where do you live?

I am glad that more work is being done on genocides done against muslims in the balkan and caucuses. A subject that receives little attention... no body wants to remember that there were millions of native muslims who were ethnically cleansed from there. Love from Beirut
As a half Circassian Turk, thank you for covering this. Sadly Circassian people never recovered the genocide and majority have been assimilated to local populations they live side by side. None of my relatives speak a word of their language and know anything about their culture, they just know they are of Circassian origin. It is really sad to see Russia is trying to do the same, in this era, while the whole world is watching.
Yeah, Turks love Circassians genes. They will assimilatedl them, strip them of their ethnic and cultural values and incorporate into "türk" ulus. Those actors with all red hair and blue eyes do not come from lineage of metes and Genghis khan.
@@xXxMonkeyBoomxXx I didn't know it was a pissing contest. Why can't both genocides be addressed in neutral language? Our National poet Taras Shevchenko even wrote a poem on this conquest as he was alive during this historical period: Mighty mountains, row on row, blanketed with cloud, Planted thick with human woe, laved with human blood. Chained to a rock, age after age Prometheus there bears Eternal punishment - each day His breast the eagle tears. It rends the heart but cannot drain The life-blood from his veins - Each day the heart revives again And once again is gay. Our spirit never can be downed, Our striving to be free. The sateless one will never plow The bottom of the sea. The vital spirit he can’t chain, Or jail the living truth. He cannot dim the sacred flame, The great god’s fame on earth. ’Tis not for us to duel with Thee! Not ours the right to judge Thy deeds! Ours but to weep ana weep, and weeping, To knead the daily bread we eat With tears and sweat and blood unending. We groan beneath the yoke of hangmen, While drunken justice sodden sleeps.
Oh, when will justice rise at last? And God, when wilt Thou give Thyself from all Thy toil a rest? - And let the people live! Yet we believe in Thy great might And in the living soul. There shall be liberty and right! And then to Thee alone All tongues will pray, all heads will bow For ever and ever. But in the meantime, rivers flow, The blood of men in rivers! They didn't give anything good to the world, only despair, death, and corruption. Everything they touch turns to shit. It makes me sick to see the Russians pride themselves now on Sochi city, which was built over the corpses of the circassians and other indigenous people. Excellent, beautifully explained and described. Fantastic maps, as always make everything fit into place. Hardly heard of this war, and had no idea of the extent of the genocide.
Russia's bloody history of genocides are mostly unknown to common people. Everyone speaks about British-Spanish colonialism etc but Russia has written the history of genocides. Russia deliberately and mostly, openly degraded minorities by inhumane treatments and killings. Also not only minorities, they exterminated other ethnic people on their own lands in order to "make" them minority in their lands. Turkic Nations in central Asia, Crimean Tatars, Ukrainians, Circassians, Caucasians and many more faced genocides, and many become minority in their own lands.
Russia doesn’t want to acknowledge their genocides. The West’s tenants of free knowledge and education allowed us to criticize their nation’s past for past actions. Russia claims these never happened and they still have ambitions to Russify and Genocide. Essentially, Russia is stuck in the past politically and socially. While Western Empires deserve all the criticism and distaste, Russia deserves more hatred for their complete denial and lies regarding of their Imperialist war crimes.
tnk I agree Russia should talk more on their crimes. But really, none saw the extremely damage caused by British and Spanish colonialism, it’s on an other level (for geographical reasons, not because they were worse as people; but it still was)
One interesting fact: Pavel Tsitsianov ( a russian general ,which was mentioned in video) who was well known for his hate toward Caucasus , was himself a native caucasian , georgian. And his original last name is Tsitsishvili.
As a Romanian I can say our interraction with Russians were similar specially in the Basarabian Region and Northern Bucovina. One of the great athrocities done by the Soviets still mourning was the Massacre at the White Fountain. So no big surprise Russians still might apply the same retoric today specially in Ukraine.

Same here! Too many atrocities, sadly. Humanity has sought extermination on a variety of bases. Nazis used evil biology, Communists used evil socioeconomic ideas, and both groups also outlawed political disagreement. Genocide has happened since antiquity. The Romans, you could easily say, did it to the Carthaginians in the Third Punic War. Those who weren't killed were enslaved and scattered around the Roman world.
Thank you for this absolutely beautiful work! Aside from some pronunciations that no non native can get right this is the best entry point to the topic. The research must have been exhaustive. This Adiga survivor of the genocide approves!!!
As much as they called noble Caucasians deregatory names, they instantly copied clothing (Cherkeska) of locals and adapted it for entire army. Their soldiers would drop their weapons and pick up locally produced Caucasian swords called "Sashka". Soon, Empire just replaced their own Sabres with this very same design. They also almost starved themselves to death when they were unable to farm on newly captured lands, until Circassians taught them the advanced methods and averted destructive famines.
Brilliantly done and such an important topic - thank you!
So you're telling us the only way to maintain an empire is through genocide? Good to know!
As a Circassian I’m very happy that this topic is being spread over the internet I cannot thank you enough sir

The Ottomans enslaved many of them, sadly.

I did a whole giant study on this whole topic, its truly a tragedy but the Circassians put up one hell of a fight. The whole thing reminds me of the native Americans wars as it does happen contemporaranously
Actually the conflicts with Native Americans were quite different.

@morzh1978 One: Not imperial but nationalistic
Two: I consider events of 1918-39 as combined bloody stupidity and utter tragedy
Three: Right now we're again 100 years away from those events and it looks like most of us had understood that paths chosen then hadn't been the good ones
Four: "Imperial" part of Polish history is a) linked in unbreakable way to "imperial" part of Lithuanian history, b) despite some people looking at it with rose-tinted glasses recognised as period of nobles' domination over all other social classes of PLC, c) recognised as period of chances lost because of nobles narrow-minded political viewpoints.
Five: Can We please stop dropping responsibility for Russian imperialism and imperialistic policies on Mongols?
Six: It's very telling, at least for me, that in Russian political spheres main adversary of Russia is called "Anglo-Saxons" - British Empire is the only one that can stand side by side with Russian Empire when ruthlessness, cultural insensitivity and exploitation of local populace are concern; in any of this categories one of those empires is first while other is close second, usually with Spanish Empire being distant third
Seven: Russian Empire is the only one that never ceased in its efforts to grow larger; yes, some other empires were checked in those efforts by other powers, to the point of these other powers becoming empires of their own, but even when some power was utterly destroyed during its empire making phase one can find in political spheres of that power glimpses of idea that maybe it's time to stop growing.
By the way, the Poles helped the Circassians no less than the British. Although among the Poles there were those who served this damned Russia, including in the Caucasus, but many ran over to the Circassians and other rebellious Caucasian tribes
As a Circassian of Turkey, I thank KG on behalf of a community whose story is almost lost to history. We’ll never forget 1864, and also that the shores of Northern Black Sea was home to many prosperous indigenous peoples of the Caucasus (and Crimea) before Russian incursions, be it Tatars, Kabardians, Kumyk Turks and our Adyghe people. Our ancestors had to endure being treated like uncivilized, "barbaric" folk merely "blocking" the Russian passage to the Black Sea harbors, so they had to suffer the worst.
TODAY, as of this moment, this same Russian mentality of a similar agenda is trying to swipe Ukraine of her lands, causing much bloodshed and suffering to the people of the Russian borderlands. We’ll never forget 1864, and keep on trying to make the Turkish government recognize the genocide, whose banner is home the largest diaspora of Circassians is located in the world.

I will never forget what I saw in the port of Novorossiisk, seventeen thousand Circassians gathered on the shore. Those who saw their situation, whether they were Christians, Muslims or irreligious, could not stand it and collapsed. In the cold of winter, in the snow, homeless, without food, and without proper clothing, these people were afflicted by typhoid fever, typhus, and smallpox. It was heartbreaking just to see it, the corpse of a weak woman dumped in the garbage with her two babies, one struggling for life, the other looking for food on her mother's breast. Such scenes were not uncommon at all. This sad page, which is a disgrace in Russian history, has caused great damage in terms of Circassian history. (Adolf Petrovich Berzhe, Russian researcher)
There were human bones thrown by the sea. Crows built their nests from male beards and female hair. For seven years the sea was beating human skulls like watermelons. I don't want even my enemies to see what I saw there.
On the way we came across a shocking sight, the corpses of women, children and the elderly, dismembered, half eaten by dogs, the deported struggle with hunger and disease, they almost have no strength to move their legs, they fall to the ground and are eaten alive by dogs. Turkish sailors immediately throw those who show the slightest sign of illness into the water. The waves are dragging these unfortunate corpses to the shores of Anatolia. Only half of those deported were able to see the land alive.

Hope we/next generations could keep their flag high, remain worthy of it 🤲🏻
I'm an Egyptian but the struggles of the Muslims in the Caucasus against Russia is very dear to me. May Allah swt grant you victory.
As a Turk I did know many people with Circassian roots. I never knew the background of these roots were this devastating :/
@Kabardian Salafi neither of us are religious. I am fully aware Islam forbids women marrying outside the religion but this does not apply here.
@Kabardian Salafi no but you said she can't be circassian on the basis she married a non-circassian when in fact many circassians marry non-circssians such as Turks.
@Kabardian Salafi where are you from?
@Kabardian Salafi how many circassions live in Jordan? Why dont you move to caucasia?

Our National poet Taras Shevchenko even wrote a poem on this conquest as he was alive during this historical period:
Mighty mountains, row on row, blanketed with cloud,
Planted thick with human woe, laved with human blood.
Chained to a rock, age after age
Prometheus there bears
Eternal punishment - each day
His breast the eagle tears.
It rends the heart but cannot drain
The life-blood from his veins -
Each day the heart revives again
And once again is gay.
Our spirit never can be downed,
Our striving to be free.
The sateless one will never plow
The bottom of the sea.
The vital spirit he can’t chain,
Or jail the living truth.
He cannot dim the sacred flame,
The great god’s fame on earth.
’Tis not for us to duel with Thee!
Not ours the right to judge Thy deeds!
Ours but to weep ana weep, and weeping,
To knead the daily bread we eat
With tears and sweat and blood unending.
We groan beneath the yoke of hangmen,
While drunken justice sodden sleeps.
Oh, when will justice rise at last?
And God, when wilt Thou give
Thyself from all Thy toil a rest? -
And let the people live!
Yet we believe in Thy great might
And in the living soul.
There shall be liberty and right!
And then to Thee alone
All tongues will pray, all heads will bow
For ever and ever.
But in the meantime, rivers flow,
The blood of men in rivers!
Mighty mountains, row on row, blanketed with cloud,
Planted thick with human woe, laved with human blood.
’Twas there that We, the Gracious [60], found
Poor freedom hiding ’mid the crags
(A hungry thing, and all in rags),
And sick’d our dogs to drag her down.
A host of soldiers on those hills
Gave up their lives. And as for blood!?
All emperors could drink their fill,
In widows’ tears alone they could
Be drowned together with their seed!
The sweetheart’s tears, in secret shed!
Unsolaceable mothers’ tears!
The heavy tears of fathers hoary!
Not streams, but veritable seas
Of blazing tears! So - Glory! Glory!
To hounds, and keepers of the hounds,
And to our rulers golden-crowned
Glory!
And glory, mountains blue, to you,
In ageless ice encased!
And glory, freedom’s knights, to you,
Whom God will not forsake.
Keep fighting - you are sure to win!
God helps you in your fight!
For fame and freedom march with you,
And right is on your side!
A hut, a crust - but all your own,
Not granted by a master’s grace,
No lord to claim them for his own,
No lord to drive you off in chains.
With us, it’s different! We can read,
The Gospel of the Lord we know!...
And from the dankest dungeon deep
Up to the most exalted throne -
We’re all in gold and nakedness.
Come, learn from us! We’ll teach you what
The price of bread is, and of salt!
We’re Christian folk: with shrines we’re blest,
We’ve schools, and wealth, and we have God!
Just One thing does not give us rest:
How is it that your hut you’ve got
Without our leave; how is it we
To you, as to a dog a bone,
Your crust don’t toss! How can it be
That you don’t pay us for the sun!
And that is all! We’re Christian folk,
We are not heathens - here below
We want but little!... You would gain!
If only you’d make friends with us,
There’s much that you would learn from us!
Just look at all our vast domains -
Boundless Siberia alone!
And prisons - myriads! Peoples - throngs!
From the Moldavian to the Finn
All silent are in all their tongues
Because such great contentment reigns!
With us, a priest the Bible reads
And then to teach the flock proceeds
About a king of ancient times, [61]
Who took to bed his best friend’s bride,
And slew the friend he wronged besides...
Now he’s in heaven! See the kind
We send to heaven! You’re denied,
As yet, our holy Christian light!
Come, learn from us! With us, it’s loot,
But pay the shot.
And straight to God,
And take your family to boot!
Just look at us! What don’t we know?
We count the stars, and flax we grow.
And curse the French. We trade or sell,
And sometimes lose in cards as well,
Live souls... not Negroes... our own stock,
And Christians, too... but common folk.
We don’t steal slaves! No, God forbid!
We do not trade in stolen goods.
We act according to the rules!...
You love your brother as is writ
Within the Golden Rule?!
O damned by God, O hypocrites,
O sacrilegious ghouls!
Not for your brother’s soul you care,
But for your brother’s hide!
And off your brother’s back you tear:
Rich furs for daughter’s pride.
A dowry for your bastard child,
And slippers for your spouse.
And for yourself, things that your wife
Won’t even know about!
For whom, O Jesus, Son of God,
Then wert Thou crucified?
For us good folks, or for the word
Of truth... Or to provide
A spectacle at which to laugh?
That’s what has come to pass.
Temples and chapels, icons and shrines,
And candlesticks, and myrrh [62] incense.
And genuflexion, countless times
Before Thy image, giving thanks
For war and loot and rape and blood,-
To bless the fratricide they beg Thee,
Then gifts of stolen goods they bring Thee,
From gutted homes part of the loot!...
We’re civilised! And we set forth
To enlighten others,
To make them see the sun of truth....
Our blind, simple brothers!!
We'll show you everything! If but
Yourselves to us you’ll yield.
The grimmest prisons how to build,
How shackles forge of steel,
And how to wear them!... How to pleat
The cruellest knouts! - Oh yes, we’ll teach
You everything! If but to us
Your mountains blue you’ll cede,
The last... because your seas and fields
We have already seized.
And you, my good Yakov, you also were driven
To die in those mountains! Your life you have given
For your country’s hangmen, and not for Ukraine,
Your life clean and blameless. ’Twas vour fate to drain
The Muscovite goblet, the full, fatal draught!
Oh friend good and noble, who’ll be never forgot!
Now wander, free spirit, all over Ukraine
And with the brave Cossacks soar over her coast,
Keep watch o’er the grave mounds on her spreading plains,
Ana weep with the Cossacks o’er all of her woes,
And wait-till from prison I come home again,
And in the meantime - I shall sow
My thoughts, my bitter tears,
My words of wrath. Oh, let them grow
And whisper with the breeze.
The gentle breezes from Ukraine
Will lift them up with dew
And carry them to you, my friend!...
And when they come to you,
You’ll welcome them with tender tears
And read each heartfelt line...
The mounds, the steppes, the sea and me
They’ll bring back to your mind.

It makes me sick to see the Russians pride themselves now on Sochi city, which was built over the corpses of the circassians and other indigenous people. We should do what we can to support the war in Ukraine against the Russians. As eastern Europeans it's a unique moment to get some payback time against those animals who brought only suffering.
While Western Empires deserve all the criticism and distaste, Russia deserves more hatred for their complete denial and lies regarding of their Imperialist war crimes.
to be fair the turkic peoples did attack the russians first so they retaliated
tnk I agree Russia should talk more on their crimes.
But really, none saw the extremely damage caused by British and Spanish colonialism, it’s on an other level (for geographical reasons, not because they were worse as people; but it still was)
The imperial model of Spain and its conquest in America is not close or similar to the English one
One interesting fact: Pavel Tsitsianov ( a russian general ,which was mentioned in video) who was well known for his hate toward Caucasus , was himself a native caucasian , georgian. And his original last name is Tsitsishvili.
He was a horrible person that had hands in blood of more Georgians than even circassians.
Perhaps he hated even his own people .

@arthegor When that land was annexed by the soviet union in the 1940s it was a lot pf Ukrainian soviets doing the genocide since they're right on the border

Because media doesn't cover it for some reason
@Kas Adam nor do schools I imagine unless you're either in a AP history class or possible college course
And that's why we Circassians are doing our best to spread awareness of our history and the genocide
Great work , thank you for putting some light on this forgotten tragedy.
Had no idea this happened. Thanks for this video.
