I wonder how many hundreds of songs Chris wrote over the years that never made it to an album. I hope to hear more some day. My heart is broken right n9w.
This song actually made it onto a record. The song is called "The Cure" and is track #12 on Audioslave's album Out of Exile. It almost sounds the same besides an older Chris with a more developed voice and that distinct Tom Morello/Audioslave vibe.
I know that this is an old post and you may know the answer already, but this song is on the soundtrack to the movie "Singles" that was about a grunge musician in Seattle... Chris had a cameo in the movie, as did members of Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins... There was a tape with fictitious song titles on it that Jeff Ament had made to be used as a demo tape prop that was dubbed the "Poncier Tape", Chris Cornell thought it would be cool to write actual songs to go with the fictitious song titles, this is one of those song titles... Spoonman was another of those song titles that originally started out there...

A Soundgarden/Chris Cornell fan since 1994 and a collector of all their singles I listened to this song today for the first time. Such a strange feeling
I've taken a lot of different meds for depression all my life sense the day I was born...this one is the best...he absorbed a lot of people's pain with simply a beautiful song.
Man, this is just so raw and ... pure Cornell-ian magic. The introspective lyrics, his powerful voice, and his acoustic guitar strumming in perfect harmony. Simply beautiful. I wonder if he kept recording of his old demos. Since he's been releasing "old" songs on newer albums (Like Murderer of Blue Skies), I guess he had it somewhere. Would be a thrill to listen to more of his demos.
apparently Soundgarden was a decent ways through what would have been their next album, but for some reason the rest of the band isn't allowed access to his vocal recordings. I hope every day that somehow they will attain the tracks and be able to put out a few more songs.
The day we met, time seemed suspended for an entire summer afternoon in June. Siobbhan was so smitten that you had taken an interest in her that she showed much gratitude for hearing your singing voice on all of your songs .She always perked up when I said "Chris from Beverly Hills" and she perked her ears for a return to the Vancouer beach bench where we first gazed into each other's eyes. There was joy and mutual interest in places we had both visited around the world. Definitely a gem of a song of the early grunge days. I wonder if he wrote the lyrics while inspired by the late Great Andrew Wood. Two beautiful souls who enjoyed being together, composing and playing sings. "They don't sing like you anymore" in 2020.
Chris Cornell had such an amazing voice that almost no one ever talks about how great of a guitar player and instrumentalist he was. Favorite musician of all time.
Chris at his finest... lots of people might take this as a hopeless song... but I do not think that what Chris was about or what this song was about. We are all out there doing the best we can do... We make more out of things than we should. The truth is, we do our best and if what we are striving for does not come to pass, it does not mean it was meaningless. This song is hope. Oddly, there is hope in hopelessness...
I have tried to embarrass the madness of that moment, The cold room of a bathroom ... The last few moments, sweat drops. The night does not leave the sound of pounding thoughts It takes courage to detach itself from the rest of the world and choose to leave. I feel a little more since you are not ... Lyrics in this definitely made it to other songs. But it still stands on its own, which is an amazing testament to how good CC truly was. Beautiful song.
Chris never ceases to amaze, he was truly a very bright light in the world, his music takes me away, lifts my spirits, in my soul, in my heart.. breathtaking, heartbreaking.
I'm a huge SG fan and collector, thanks for the upload. Wonderful to hear. I think SG were the best band on the planet around the superunknown era and CC was at his creative peak writing so many incredible songs, whether heavy or soft. Wish he recorded and released this solo or with sg,but still amazing to hear. Something must have happened after euphoria morning creatively ... audioslave (the rage guys) and scream etc totally doesnt make sense when comparing it to this stuff. I can't get my head around it. But this period I'll treasure forever. Thanks Chris, legend.
1zv You can't deny his songwriting with Audioslave or the Scream album. That's how diverse he was. It's all in the same sort of vein as a Beatles progression, mostly without the acid. Dude was off the charts in songwriting abilities. There aren't many musical Gods left now, due to the state of the industry. It is all copycats and some artists who think they are original. Chris Cornell represented the last bit of originality that I can see for miles.
that's true, and i certainly don't think those albums were bad, in fact i listen often, but i definitely feel there is a marked difference in quality in what he was doing say superunknown to EM era vs audioslave and onwards. this stuff was magical, unique, eerie. i think comparing soundgarden to ratm/audioslave actually reflects this-soundgarden were innovative, lyrically dark, genre pushing, diverse and technically superb, whereas audioslave were simply ratm (a meat and potatoes band with a great rapper that did the same thing over and over, even as described my morello) with chris belting over their riffs instead of zach. their releases and how the band doing rage covers with CC suggests to me that the rage guys didn't do enough to bring out the best in CC. just listening to this song, poncier reminds me of the chris' total genius, which many seem to overlook. definitely peak cornell for me.
1zv Great point dude. I do agree that his writing was darker at that point in time. He evolved in his songwriting. That first Audioslave album is gold. He is the one who would find the bridge for songs for Morello. Also, when I listen to Higher Truth, I think it is one of the best songs of all time. It's got a John Lennon feel to it, and if you saw it live in his solo show, he ended the show with that song. It was fucking epic!
I'm not dissing Soundgarden here by any means as BMF is top 2 of my all time favorite albums but Rage is being totally underrated here with your statements. They were COMPLETELY unique when they came out. I remember hearing them and thinking what the heck is this. Not really liking the rap vibe at first, but getting it later. I think the Audioslave thing was more the RATM guys playing more straight ahead rock. A lot of it was moving towards blues. I think an average listener would get Audioslave way before they would Soundgarden. Like my girlfriend would never hear or appreciate all the time changes in some of the Soundgarden songs, but she could sit and listen to Audioslave much easier if that makes sense. Like if I put on the song "cold bitch", she just wouldn't hear that monstrous riff for what it is, or all the time signature changes that shouldnt work at all, but they do with soundgarden, then it all comes back into a catchy chorus. .
Wow, this is great!!!!! RIP Chris. We'll never forget you, you saved so many of us, sorry we couldn't do the same for you man, but hope you're happy wherever you are now that you left this miserable place, hope there is something better after this life for you and for all of us, hopefully one day we can meet in another place, "no more suffering".
just found this today, this is a masterpiece, i'm so glad chris doesn't have a lot of attention like... kurt... but he deserves more recognition, i just don't want any fake fans to come along and ruin it for us
Thanks for posting this ,a very Jimmy Paige sound on the guitar there I must say,is it Jimmy on guitar?? ..Thanks Chris for leaving us with your magnificent voice ,love ya my friend and I hope the ferry boat man took you home safely. xx
Waiting for my album to arrive in the post. It hasn't been dispatched yet so thanks for uploading the track. Beautiful and very sad. Please can you upload the instrumental track score piece #4.
Does anyone know when this song was written and why I've never heard it before?????????? It's beautiful! Is that really what it's called Ferry Boat? Jesus Christ I can't stop crying
I don’t know exactly when it was written, but it was part of the Singles soundtrack. I would guess sometime around 90 or 91. It was an unreleased track that saw the light of day on the 25th anniversary edition. It’s also the basis for Audioslave’s The Curse
He wrote it during the making of the film Singles around 90 or 91. Jeff Ament (who plays bass in Pearl Jam and is in the movie) designed a cassette tape as a prop for the movie, and Chris liked the titles Jeff came up with: Spoonman, Flutter Girl, Seasons, etc. so he was inspired to write music to go with them. We would not have Spoonman or this beautiful piece if not for Jeff Ament Edit: the tape is called “Poncier” and doesn’t include Ferry Boat #3, but the tape is where he drew the inspiration
Considering that Chris Cornell wrote this, Flutter Girl, Spoonman and Seasons during the brief time he was involved in the filming of Singles is testimony to the staggering musical talent and creativity he possessed.
You can hear the first few cords of this when she's on the dock after the pregnancy scare and split. They should have played it a lot longer IMO.
Underrated comment
God damnit yes
If this and Birth Ritual were all he ever wrote, he'd be worth remembering. Fortunately they're the tip of a tasty iceberg of grungy coolness 😎
Yeah! and It gets crazier.. In the book "Total Fucking Godhead" there is said he sat down and it took him 5 hours to write those 5 songs.
You can hear it all in here... Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Temple... Solid gold.
I love you friend

Help me I don't know what I'm doing
Help me before I fall to ruin
And if I'm blind, I'll save you all

When your eyes forget to well
And when your lies forget to tell
And when our paths forget to cross
It doesn't mean you're lost

way better than Audioslave version
My God. There’s something in my eye.
Wow, this is great!!!!! RIP Chris. We'll never forget you, you saved so many of us, sorry we couldn't do the same for you man, but hope you're happy wherever you are now that you left this miserable place, hope there is something better after this life for you and for all of us, hopefully one day we can meet in another place, "no more suffering".
just found this today, this is a masterpiece, i'm so glad chris doesn't have a lot of attention like... kurt... but he deserves more recognition, i just don't want any fake fans to come along and ruin it for us
It’s so insane how much of an impact Andy had on Chris and how much Chris developed after Andy passed
Perfection. I often come here to listen to this marvel.

It’s on the deluxe edition of the Singles soundtrack.
The Curse is arguably the better version but make no mistake this is as raw as it gets as well! Wow!
Wonderful..jeust wow....thanks
Wow! Thank you!!!
He left us this.
Weird that no one realized that the lyrics in this song were used in the Audioslave Out of Exile album. Maybe I'm just too big of a fan.
We would not have Spoonman or this beautiful piece if not for Jeff Ament
Edit: the tape is called “Poncier” and doesn’t include Ferry Boat #3, but the tape is where he drew the inspiration
2:32 That is one of the best riffs I have ever heard, seriously
Still can't believe it
