His wife is a true ride or die! I feel like most significant others would do their best to keep them from doing what nearly killed them. But she was supportive in his return to climbing even though it scared her!

I think she realizes life is too short to live in fear of doing stuff you enjoy, even after something bad that's happened. There is a thousand ways we could die everyday, and climbing is generally safe if done correctly.
This guy is an inspiration, and a true breathing living legend. Phenomenal spirit and heart.
I remember when I had to climb three steps in order to get another Heineken beer. I got to the last step, cat ran in front of me. Stubbed my toe. It changed my life forever.

Man his friend had some serious explaining to do ay.
Long time friend of Craig's and sat with him in the hospital. It was an honest miscommunication between them. Craig has said so repeatedly.

As a belayer his friend should never answer okay while he was not ready. Their communication between them should be precise and no miscommunication.
His friend almost caused his death

I know that's what we're left to assume but what climber would ascend 100ft and not secure his own anchor rope? I've never seen a climber lay back that high up while relying on some one else to have ESP.
Steve was liable.
I like a little adventure now and then, but these shows make me grateful I never felt the need to conquer a cliff, sail the high seas, explore a cave, fly in a little plane, etc. etc.
This man got some serious mental strength.

This has given me goosebumps, what a level of endurance he is having, climbing again with the prosthetic foot is an ultimate sheer resistance towards following your passion. Simply incredible.

Steve must feel so bad..
My god, the bravery to break a record after having a fall that nearly killed you… I could only hope for that kind of courage if I were mangled so severely. What an amazing man! The support of his wife truly shines though. I don’t know that I would be so willing to let my husband go it again so soon, but she knew it’s what he needed to truly recover, both physically and mentally. So inspiring!
Theses rescue people are wonderful.
And I guess they are underpaid :(

Or also known as a Darwin Award 😂😂😂😂
Actually, this is a very common mistake. Saying it only happens to rookies make you sound like a douche. Countless legends have died from simple user error mistakes just like this. The part worth being critical of is the fact that they even bothered to describe the E rating of the route when that played zero role in the accident.
And just in my local community we call this a bad day 😅

I'm definitely not an expert on rock climbing but didn't his partner break the golden rule of belaying?? Yikes.
As a rock climber myself his partner broke on the biggest rules in rock climbing. What they were doing What's something called lead climbing, Lead climbing is where you climb the natural features on the rock when you make it to a bolt you clip in a Quick Draw . You can place cams nuts or hexes along the route if the bolts are spaced out pretty well. When you make it to the top you clip your PAS personal anchor system in to the bolts make a anchor. Once you pull up the rope to repell down you then say take me off belay. Then reppell down then your down while going down you collect your Quickdraw and cams and nuts or hexes. Your partner should fireman's belay for you in case of a accident.
In this situation What ended up happening once he made it to the top of the climb he assumed that his partner Had a mom play when he leaned back to sit down to be lowered he fell. The biggest thing to take away from this video is that when your climbing or lead climbing you always want to make sure that your belayer is downer when you are ready to be lowered his partner made a fatal fatal mistake for taking his blade device off and walking away so there was a miscommunication during this accident

Indoor climbing is fine just not outdoor climbing. I tried outdoor climbing and it was scary since you had to look for places to step on and the foot holds aren’t big most of the time
Yea im definitely into climbing things less vertical. I like when it's kindagiant boulders that go up in steps. completely vertical stuff i look down and get sick in my stomach and scramble back down

@@christianbishop6524 erm when you climb things less vertical you’re more likely to fall and get tired and you will fall more on lead climbing i feel you when i started climbing i was scared of heights but after that i got used to it plus don’t forget you have to find a comfortable positions to clip into the quick draw (aka those clips he clipped the rope into,in the video) assuming those route are already set up by people with bolts attached to them and you have to keep chalking to not get hella sweaty palms

Omg I haven't climbed in a while but our number one rule was never to let go of the belay rope unless it was tied off 😭

@@Lettusfarm @Amber - it was an honest miscommunication between them. Steve thought Craig was going to belay him up to the anchor. Once Craig tied into the anchor and called off belay - Steve took him off to get his shoes on to follow and clean the route. (Source - long time friend of Craig's)

@@Wallrat yes but why can't you just wait until your climber is on the ground to put your shoes on? I never let the rope go even when my climber is off belay!
@@Wallratthank you Wall Rat, I keep seeing everybody blaming Steve for not tying off the rope but imo it was mainly Craig's fault for not harnessing directly to the rock at that height. Everybody's blaming Steve but this was a combination of errors. And they both were responsible for checking equipment beforehand.

Nostalgia when I watch Wonder's format: Okay, the format of this show Wonder is tripping me out, and I love it because it's exactly like stuff that I watched in the 90s on a tube tv, with scan lines. Back then, we would watch shows like this, probably before or after X-files. This format is exactly how they did it back then, with a very similar announcer and cadence and script, and re-enactments.

When he said the "clifs gonna tip over" I died 19:19
In high school I had to have 4 surgeries on my knee. The pain of physical therapy was extremely painful and I almost gave up, then the doctors told me if I didn't keep going and work though the pain I would lose movement in that leg and possibly lose the leg. I developed a bad staph infection from all the surgeries. I had to deal with this for 4 years, my high school was mostly in and out of hospital. I only had a knee injury, I just cant imagine what this guy went through with so many injuries. This guy could have been paralyzed and now his is back to climbing. It's just awesome to what he accomplished after his fall. My doctor told me I will never play sports again because my other knee with go out like the one that I had 4 surgeries on and as a teen I believe him and never play sports again but I did find a new outlit though photography.

That's scary I would never do something like that I stay on the ground. When my brother was climbing a very high tree from the 2nd floor to cut the branches I was so scared he was going to fall but he acted like it's nothing.

Kirsten K. I am just new on here and haven’t read all the comments but yes I used to rock climb. You would never unhook anybody from your harness. You are their lifeline. Even if they run out of rope because they mistook the length of the climb you have a huge knot tied so they can’t slip through. They Called this his accident all the way through. It wasn’t his accident it was negligence by his climbing partner.
I disagree. When you're up 100ft and can't see your partner, you clip your harness to the rock, not your pully rope. Also, if Craig thought Steve was climbing, hooking the pully would mean he will start getting slack as Steve ascends. Why would he risk that? Steve was a long time climbing partner so if he didn't even have knots in the rope and didn't start his ascent by then, he clearly was intended as a guide, not an anchor. It's not clear why neither of them blame each other but in every retelling they call it an accident without pointing fingers. Craig was 100 ft up and mistook one of the pully ropes for his own harness. Sad to see someone claiming to be a rock climber blaming the person on the ground.

After all of that, there is no way I would be teaching my daughter to rock climb. There is a point of challenging yourself, there is also a point that is called stupidity. This is why so many adrenaline junkies have their lives cut short
Some people get so much joy from climbing that they feel it’s worth the risk. That’s different from stupidity. How many parents let their girls do gymnastics even though they could fall at a weird angle and break their neck at any moment? You can mitigate the risks of climbing by being a lot more careful than the guys in this video. They ignored a lot of basic rules. THEY were stupid, climbing isn’t.
Climbing is not a dangerous sport when performed following safety rules! Here the belayer was absolutely insane for getting him out of belay and he forgot to ask him to take rope to be sure he was on belay. So they both did a huge mistake but the belayer should be arrested!

He did say off belay so I don't understand why he clipped out without confirmation that he was back on belay ? 🤔
It seems like everyone, even people who claim to be climbers (except Wallrat), are blaming Steve. But what happened here is that once Craig secured himself to the rock face, that is supposed to mean his harness is secured to the rock face and he's no longer on the belay. At that point, yes there should have been knots in the bottom of the rope, but Steve had no reason to think that Craig would need those knots. So these are two rookie mistakes that both of these men made. It wasn't just Steve and it wasn't just Craig but if anyone made the fatal error it was Craig by unhooking his harness and assuming Steve had started his ascent.

Here’s a fun story like this: Yesterday, me and my best friend went to urban air yesterday for my birthday. We went on the rock walls, and she strapped herself in (in case you didn’t know they have funny locks) and thought she was strapped in, turns out she wasn’t. When she jumped off, the rope broke and she fell. She was practically at the ceiling, when she hit the ground she hyperextended her foot and ended up falling on it wrong. We go her on a bench and it wasn’t swollen or bruised, but she couldn’t move it. Today, she went to the hospital to get an x-ray and I came along because I felt really bad. Turns out, she ended up breaking 3 out of 5 bones in her foot and had to get a cast. She was crying beforehand because she didn’t want surgery (she was scared of not waking up again). However, she didn’t have to get surgery. I got to sign her cast and I got her LOTS of candy, three different huge Harry Potter lego sets, and a puzzle. I feel really bad still, but I’m glad she’s gonna be okay.
