Rebuilt the front brakes and new CV axles before vacation. Trucks been good to me now after we fixed everything. 127k only issue I had was water pumps untill my last one I went threw 7 in 6 months . This year trans will be rebuilt with all better stuff. New rear brakes and new hoses and rad. To support the power I'ma throw at it. My goal is 350 hp then next year head and cam. About that, I used to watch a channel called Hack'n Pack Shop (and it's exactly what it sounds like).
So just for experimenting (and because I was pressed for time) I did some super quick tackweld patch repair on rear arches, housings, rocker rear ends, and around tailgate on my forever crusty work-car, same as in the videos on that channel.
Didn't take more than a couple of hours, the repaired sections ended up way stronger there vs on the factory stuff which is wiggly wobbly all over the place, that was 6 years ago and it's still holding up (I test it like a mad viking with a poke hammer every year).
My stupid theory is the factory stuff only has a required amount of spotwelds per square foot for this and that section or something to keep with auto industry ISO safety standards or something or another.
Anyway, the point is that same as me, you have about f*ck all time to spend fixing it, and welding it 200% correctly is what takes too much precious time and resources for it to be worth the effort of keeping it alive vs re-shelling. If you do it quick, a lick or two of primer, duraglas for protection and some paint on top, it'll hold up for a while longer instead of driving around with a car that's turning into crust all around you.

Take a tip from the Jeep world. On rockers that get hammered, cut them out and weld in 3" square tube. It's mostly to avoid damage from rocks off-road, but it's a thicker piece of steel and you can paint it inside and out as well as drill holes to let water escape.

    • @FloorItDuh

All the money they saved by switching from a metal assembly to a plastic one. Engineers get run hard by the bean counters. Corporate says we want this, engineers design it and say it will cost this much to do it right, bean counters say that is too much for how much they want to sell it for or make profit on. Bean counters tell corporate. Corporate says to engineers it must cost this much. Engineers redesign it to cost less and get a working design out the door.
Long story short fuck bean counters.

@@FloorItDuh I get it. I'm in school for engineering right now and do my own mechanics and I curse engineers and bean counters every time I pick up a wrench. The other major factor is getting it down the assembly line as fast as possible. Changing the starter on a 2003 ford ranger 4.0L 4x4 is a massive pain, but since the engine, trans, and transfer case were dropped in the frame as a unit with the starter already bolted on, it wasn't a problem. For the poor sap who has to replace it, good luck, so much stuff in the way.
As far as engineers go, I know someone who had to teach the engineering intern how to use a wrench (literally) and another the difference between steel and aluminum. Not saying all engineers are this way, but in school, there is a severe lack of hands on that can't be taught in the computer. Just because it works in the computer doesn't mean it will work in the real world.

I recommend sending that exhaust tip over to Peg, he can mount it up on ol' Slave Lake or Big Dick.

Back in my day when the one fifty Cummins was about the biggest diesel fuel engine and I got real used to working on the outside first then going deeper when you had to, I found them simple engines that were easy to adapt to most stationary projects like yarders, loaders... and then trucks...18 wheelers. Then the detroit made their entrance with the 53 series and they were no challenge but the 60 series won over because they had close to 200 hp. But then I learned how to work on the fuel pump and cummins was the primary choice. then after I learned the fuel system the cummins was the choice again cause the detroits had no torque but cummins did and black smoke trailed them back a half a mile.Spite fueling then, they got better mileage and easier starting. BUT if you had never driven a cummins the detroit it was for new drivers till they learned how to drive cause head gaskets were cheap but liners were not and if you got a bad reputation then you were screwed. Wish I could tell you about the first truck I built frame up... All we had was krylon paint but it kept the wheels white... Heh heh heh, I found Canadian crowme and the race was on

Hey Rich this truck has been my inspiration for my current project 2005 cc/lb Cummins nv4500 np263xhd swap. I started on it Oct 13 2020 that was pulling apart my donor truck and then the Chevy it was a complete truck Duramax Allison np263xhdthat i bought not running. I drove the truck for the first time Dec 4 2020 drives great for a truck with 315k on it waiting on an air dog pump to correct my lack of knowledge on Cummins cam shafts swapped a 2nd gen fuel system on a 1st gen. My lift pump isn't happy which in return makes the p pump unhappy. My main concern is my speedometer isn't working I had the thought that using the stock transfer case and wiring I would be good but I was wrong. I can not get low range either but I'm probably going to switch to a manual t case in the future to remedy that issue because I believe that issue is due to no Allison vss output and maybe that's what the issue with the speedo is. I would really appreciate any help you can give me! Wondered what you did for your speedo
