For lifting the front wheel, I'm consdering dropping rear wheel out and then weighting and strapping down the back of the bike on the centre stand... So hopefully see-saw'ing the bike down c.25cm at the rear and c.25cm up at the front...
I'll let you know how I get on.
I had considered not bothering with the stupid bleed screw/50cm thing and hoped the water pump would 'self bleed' into the expansion tank when the system got hot, but when I read about hot spots and cavitating in the pump I though best not to risk it!

So it worked pretty well. Bike was a little unstable for some of the more heavy handed stuff (I was swapping the radiator too) and the bike kept wanting to balance on a squint on the right hand 'foot' of the centre stand and the left hand... whatever the bit of the centre stand is called that you stand on to lift the bike on to, and drop the bike off the centre stand is called. But with care and persuasion it settled down well.
I've a ground anchor point for chaining my bikes up to when I go away from home for a while and I used a strap tie over the rear off the bike through the ground anchor. Simples!

@@kurtthemotorbicyclist2686 hi Kurt, im in the process of chaging out my radiator after i found a leak. so i have striped the bike down, quite daunting i must say but now have the radiator off. I can't see and stone marks so it looks like one of the cores is split inside. Anyway i ordered a new one. Bloody expensive at over £400. Anyway not having any manuals to work with im relying on videos such as this one. very useful, however i thought i was going to see the front of the bike jacked up 0.5m but it wasnt. I understand you took the back wheel off and pivoted from the centre stand. Makes sence to achieve 250mm. So most of my water is out at the moment. when i refit the new radiator i'll do the engine drain too. i did see another video where they didnt do raise the bike. I'm wondering if its really nessasary, although i know it probably is. my bike is 3 yrs old, 10k miles on it and the S model. do you or Patrick have any other advice you can give me? Thanks, Terry

@@terryploppypants2792 The tilt is to ensure any air in the coolant system is out. I had thought I wouldn't bother as it may just work through the system and bubble out into the expansion bottle, but I read enough accounts of damage to various engines because of air in the coolant system (about 3) to think it was simpler to just do it.
I've also still got my old radiator and intend to get it re-cored as a spare or too flog on fleabay... but it's still sat there.

@@kurtthemotorbicyclist2686 Thanks for the reply. OK so it looks like i'll be coming up with some sort of plan to tilt the bike back. removing the wheel seems the best bet. i'll brace the bike either side to be sure it wont fall. Hopefully 250mm is enough :)

Hey, I know I'm repeating what you said, but dont (I know you said you wont) sell and change the bike!! I dont have one but I sure do have a lot of knowledge about the 1190R. It's a terrific bike, a premium bike that's made way better than the 1090R plastc wise and more analogue ( yeah, better) than the 1290R. It really is an awesome bike that does not need changind for the 790R, at least not for 3 year since KTM sells prototypes to people the first years and shit is def gonna happen. All the best and keep the videos coming, do a start up next time after the change, do it as in film the freaking thing.

What a pain in the arse job this was.
Lifting the front 50cm was the most annoying part.
Had a buddy position her on a load of bricks for me so I could take care of her (phrasing! - do you watch Archer?)
    Seemed to work okay.
    Coolant looked beyond it’s best..
Worth doing. Good for another two years now 👍
    Cute doggos btw

Big fan of Archer. Yeah, that whole lifting requirement was probably added to make lazy people go to the dealership.

It? ...daily basis thank you very mu...oh, you mean the bike? Every time it is at the dealership for repairs. Hm. Lazy guide to washing a motorcycle coming up.

    Howzit Patrick,
Another KTM-riding, German-speaking Patrick from SA here!
One question, though: When flushing the cooling system with demineralised water, how do you you start and run the engine with no fuel tank and no fuel pump?
I'm aiming to do my 1290 properly very soon.

    • @PatrickFlinner
      @PatrickFlinner  5 років тому

      With lots of profanity...
There is no easy way unless you place the tank back on the bike, or raise it next to the bike on its side so that the pump connection can be hooked up. Honestly: Just dump everything, refill with de-mineralised water, lean the bike from side to side (wash cycle), drain and refill.
