I have to say that all the reviewers just use a foldable for a couple of weeks and move on, but they are such a new way to use a phone it's only after months you really appreciate what you can do and how it will fit in your life. I know they all like to hate the thin screen on the Fold 5 but if you use it for a few months it is just so lovely to have a smaller easy to reach screen. It also makes it so lovely to hold in your hand when folded up. I was so worried it would be a problem before I got the fold 5 but I simply love it. I don't want to have a wide phone in my pocket or hand any more. Just my opinion anyway.
100% true. I use the cover screen alot but I also find myself not even using my other phone cause I love the slim screen. I hope samsung doesn't change it.
I am surprised you barely mention one plus open new split screen and multitasking UI, which is what we have been waiting for on foldables. It makes you want to use the phone more…. Most of the comparison is focused on cameras.
I've owned every Samsung Fold. When I bought my OPPO Find N2...I never touched my Fold 5 again. But because of the Chinese ROM, I was super excited about the OnePlus Open and bought it within minutes of the release ending. I hate the form factor of the Fold but that's me. Not everyone agrees. That's the great thing about companies releasing their own formula. Something for everyone.
Given everyone takes their screens from Samsung, the leaks of the "fold 6" aka "s24 ultra fold" are kinda spot on - regular size front screen. I sold my fold 4 cause I couldn't bear the travesty of what the front screen is. My s23 ultra is perhaps the best phone in the world rn next to ip15pm. S24u coming soon, but the Open is THE best foldable rn.
@@ancientslav4863 really curious how the OnePlus 12 turns out. Apparently they are using a BOE display this year. 4,500 nits (but only in certain situations in a small area) and supposedly works even when the screen is wet.
I enjoy my samsung fold for 3 reasons, software, ecosystem, and size. The UI is just packed full of useful features, the Samsung ecosystem is the closest i can get to the Apple ecosystem and the more narrow outer screen is what i prefer.
@hellsfavoritesaltyberserke4724 Says someone who never used a Samsung fold Buddy i moved from fold 3 to 4 and now 5 and this phone has absolutely no comparison
I like that the outer screen mimics inner screen. Its easier on muscle memory and quick peripheral vision to just go right to the click you want to make without thinking.
1:38 so much hate for the narrow outer screen of the Z Fold 5, but as someone who doesn't have large hands, it is a godsend compared to a lot of other devices. Coming from a pixel 6, I haven't been this excited for a phone since the HTC M7 with BoomSound speakers
I completely disagree with your assessment that the fold five is not the right form factor. That's the thing I'm glad that Samsung went their own direction. I don't want a foldable phone that says wide as a normal phone. It felt really nice being a bit more of a candy bar shape when it's folded. And I'm even talking about the fold three that I have. I'm sure the five is a very nice refinement. We don't want all phones to be exactly the same or what's the point? It's cool that offer when their own way and it's a very nice looking phone but to say that Samsung should have done the same thing and is wrong for not doing it it's just ridiculous. Not everybody is looking for the same thing in a phone that you are. Phones are like a lot of things, subjective
having the camera shown on the screen has never been a bad thing for me personally. i've never liked under screen cameras and even when OP did the pop out camera on the OP7 i felt like that was a better design.
@@MatthewMoniz why do you need multiple cameras that do the same thing. I've taken interviews and more on the underscreen camera and everyone says they can see me fine, and I look way better than most people connecting with webcams and PCs. I forget its even there until I need to use it.
I really need to upgrade my phone and since I've had 4 Galaxy phones in a row, I was about to go with the Fold 5. The Open has really blown me away though. The hardware and software look very fleshed out. I've never had a Oneplus phone but I think I've gotta give them a shot with this one
I'm thinking of trading in my S3U for it honestly, while it has been a great phone I want to give foldable a try and I remember having a good enough experience back when I had the OnePlus 7 pro with the pop camera (rip Cool feature)
Have you got a OnePlus phone now? U better do, because if u had 4 galaxy phones in a row, u should try something new! And choosing OnePlus is the best choice ! Saying from experience ;)
You can say one plus has learned from samsung and the feedback from millions of users, hence their design improvements. One thing that favours Samsung is, its folds are tried and tested. The quality factor and reliability of the folds Is proven. I'm writing this on my Z fold 3.
As a Z Fold 5 owner who came from a Note 20 Ultra 5G, let me say definitively that the smaller size of the phone when its folded and the smaller cover screen are both reasons to buy the phone and are NOT hindrances in anyway. And don't be fooled by the battery, it will last the average person easily all day. Glad to see competition in the folding phone arena, but larger cover screens are not more productive or better and kind of, in my opinion, defeat the purpose of having a fold-able phone. If I need a larger screen, I'll unfold the phone. Great comparison though.
It ain't much to do with size as much as the aspect ratio. The oneplus feels like a regular phone folded than the Z fold 5 with the taller aspect ratio.
@joelo5164 Yeah; I don't understand all these people who want a regular slab phone on the outside so they never have to unfold their foldable. What's the point? 🤷♂️ Samsung views the Z Fold as a tablet that fits in your pocket, not a slab phone that turns into a tablet.
Buena comparativa!
Been using Sammys Fold since the 2, one thing i can say is if your liking the OnePlus, wait until the 2nd version......1st versions always seem to have bugs, the 2nd version of the Fold was so much better than the first.
Personally love the narrow front display. Just super convenient and comfortable to use. You want something huge… just open it. The only thing Samsung would have to do to perfect the fold would be to bring the Ultra cameras to it.
My country in SEA region there’s tons foldable phone to choose from Xiaomi mix fold 3, Honor magic vs2, oppo find N3, Huawei mate X3, vivo x fold 2 & Samsung z fold 5. One Ive use right now is honor magic vs2 along side with oppo find x7 ultra.
If there's anything I've learned over the years, is that the hardware is only as good as it's software. If OnePlus can refine their software a bit, i think it can be a better alternative to Samsung, but right now it looks like it'll be a "just ok" phone. We'll have to see.
@MatthewMoniz Gotcha! Yeah, Samsung's camera's are pretty solid, I'm sure OnePlus will be able to pull through, especially considering the camera specs
@@MatthewMoniz How come SOFTWARE is great? I owned and sold the OnePlus 11 because even their SECURITY UPDATE always DELAYED for 2-3 months, then their SOFTWARE UPDATE always have TONS of BUGS. I was a fanboy of OnePlus, but never again… I will choose any day the flagship phones of APPLE, GOOGLE & SAMSUNG, as they update their flagship phones ONCE A MONTH, for years to come!
@@cliffm8846 it's most likely that you're doing something wrong because I never had those problems. I don't know anyone that has either. I've had more problems with my iphone
I own a z fold 5 i wish it would have looked like this with a built in pen. Only reason i choose samsung is because of the software. Samsung is way better optimized and has dex, and a pen water resistant. Other then that im not interested in the oneplus software.
Samsung software has more features but I don't think they are better optimized. Coming from S22 Ultra to the half price OnePlus 11. The software experience is definitely an upgrade.
Every Fold they come out these sponsor dudes day it's better for people to find out months down the line it is nowhere near as good. Honor are in their 3rd version this year and the 2 was supposed to be a h best according to these guys. The OnePlus gravy train is back.😂
Thank you for an unbiased review. I have the Z Fold 5 and couldn't be happier. I actually appreciate the slimmer outer screen. I don't have any issues using it to send a text or scroll through my feed. The larger inner screen was literally made to handle everything else. Your points about app optimization and camera quality, not too mention Samsung's more developed ecosystem, (I have the watch, buds and tablet plus I've e been a Note user since the first Note), the S Pen stylus support, DeX, prolonged software support and the insane incentives offered when u pre-order, ( I was given $1,000 off the Fold 5 for my S22 Ultra), are all reasons the Fold 5 is a much better all around phone, in my humble opinion.
My beef with Samsung is the Hinge issue that happens to all Z series phones and if you don't pay for warranty you are staffed while the OnPlus Open comes with 2 years warranty and for damage or accidental damage for free they will fix whatever for free but two or more weeks waiting lol but I don't care if my phone gets fixed
I was torn between the Open, Fold 5, or iPhone Pro. Thank you for this informative video. Your video really leveled the Opens' camera. Other video had it destroying everything that folds. Dex and the S-Pen are used almost daily by me for work. I subscribed to your videos and keep up the great work.
@@MatthewMoniz @11:45 you are incorrect. The OnePlus CAN use a stylus. It is not noted anywhere that specifically it cannot use one. However, the Oppo Find N3 is the exact same hardware and it says that it CAN use one. There are videos of people using the Oppo pen on the OnePlus Open. (The S-pen and the OnePlus stylo will not work, only the Oppo pen which you can get online easily.
Oneplus ditching wireless charging to make the phone thinner and lighter is definitely the right move. Is it really that hard to put a little bit more effort to just plug in the wired charger? Never understand why people need wireless charging.
Meh. I have the Fold since launch, never used Dex. It's a nice gimmick, but there's no reason to use it in 2023. The use case being : you absolutely need a screen bigger than the Fold's one, you don't have a tablet nor laptop, you have a display sitting alone in your house, you have a mouse and keyboard on that orphan display. I tried it once and never used it again, and I don't see any Samsung user using dex. Same for the spen. I loved it on the Galaxy Note. So I bought it with my Fold. I ended up not carrying it because the cases are bulky and there's no place to put them inside the phone. You use thel at first, but after a while you just rock the phone without it. It's just a pain in the butt. On the other end, having a better front display is something you'll use ALL the time. The utility isn't even close
@@azuree31 I find the response time not good enough to be enjoyable, there's a little bit of lag. Plus the definition seems below my native 4k tv output. The OS is limited compared to a PC or Macbook. I can't used it in any place like a laptop. I get you, but for me it's not worth the hassle for a subpar experience. I'd rather have a good show on my Oled tv and working on the couch at the same time with a good laptop. Not for me. I get you tho, thanks for the explanation my friend. It's appreciated
I absolutely love my Fold5, been a fold user for years. However... This design is getting extremely boring. I'm glad that there is competition, hopefully it'll spark some new innovation on the Samsung side. Gonna skip out on the OnePlus (for now)... Reasons: first gen device, no wireless charging, not ipx8, and software limitations. But that form factor is sexy.
I really, really hope Sammy is paying attention. I love the Fold 5 and honestly have gotten used to the form factor and it's actually great to use. But man, make it wider, stick the pen inside, and you've got a winner. The Open's issues (while I actually really like the form factor) and misses don't make me want to switch...
I couldn't care less about the pen personally, I'd much prefer that they slim it down a bit instead or maybe even increase the battery capacity. But the outer screen width is definitely an issue right now with the fold 5
Man this OnePlus Open looks amazing, and I'm jealous as an iPhone user. My only concern right now is the durability, especially after Mr. Mobile's first unit had condensation inside the camera housing, and MKBHD's unit developed dead pixels for seemingly no reason in a couple weeks.
Slim design for a reason. Don't you think samsung tried. I got my fold 5 two weeks ago. Won't be going back to iphone. Also samsungs slim design is better when opened. Youll see when watching videos or content.
Serious question: why is the lack of wireless charging disappointing? I don't see how plugging a phone is an inconvenience. It's not like you don't have to get up and place the phone on a wireless charger. I don't see the big deal. Thoughts?
Whilst I agree with you about wireless charging (I don't even use it) the majority of people who are buying a handset at this price point expect wireless charging as a standard. They'll probably have wireless chargers & have become accustomed to using them. It doesn't bother me at all, but I understand it when people point out the lack of it at this price point. It was a poor decision by OnePlus imo . I presently use the OP 11 & I would have upgraded to the Open but in Europe there's no trade in deals which makes the OP Open too expensive
I personally love the size of cover screen on my fold 5. Never understood the hate. Gives me vibes of vertu times. The moment they make it wider, I am off from fold. Literally the only phone (plus some Sony midranges) that is comfortable to hold in hand.
Awesome comparison. I learned that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 camera is as phenomenal as the OnePlus Open despite how the latter is marketed by having better sensors and colorimetry. Nonetheless, I gave the credit to OnePlus for how well designed the Open is.
If Samsung doesn't fix up and make the Fold 6 have this samenform factor then im moving to OnePlus. Been waiting a long time for a folding phone with good Software. Samsung finally has competition.
I traded from fold 2 to 5 and disappointingly there's really not much difference. Feels like the same old phone. I love it, will never go back to a traditional phone but I'm really thinking about the Oppo because I hate the cover screen, it's pretty useless
I had enough experience with my previous Fold 4. I think this is the correct time for me to try another foldable phone. This Oneplus/Oppo came out at the right time, allowing me to adopt a new system.
I think the Samsung found a working formula so they are just trying to polish it. I don’t think they are lazy they just are focusing on the smaller things for a seamless experience
Yeah I think people have it confused, I understand wanting a bigger outer screen I'm typing this from my fold 5 right now but I think it was just a design choice because the fun is in actually using the phone unfolded. I upgraded to this from the z fold 2 and it's an improvement in every way. I played around with the Google pixel before making my choice and I t honestly didn't feel as good even with the wider outside screen.
Samsung just needs to make the damn thing a little wider and put some good cameras on it make a silo for the pen if possible and nothing will come close

The first comment I got from others when letting them fiddle a bit with my Fold5 is that the narrower, taller screen lends itself well to people with smaller hands or for single-handed tasks. It's rather interesting to see reviewers diss on that "cover" screen (which is actually seen as the main screen by normal users), because it shows the clear disconnect between your normal user and enthousiast user demographics.
I don't think Samsung is lazy - they are just playing it safe including tried and tested hinge and screen technology. Of course I think they should be more innovative but at the same time I appreciate that I see on online auctions 2-3 year old Z Folds 2 & 3 for 600 usd and they still work very well and are not broken :)
I moved away from samsung and i am so much happy with the one plus open. The battery life is the best part and the obviously the charging time. I dont care for wireless charging so i am good with the open. Also the screen is so much more beautiful in the open. Thank you OnePlus for making life so much easier.
You've made me have second thoughts about getting the Z Fold 5, not because I prefer the OnePlus, but it's the size of the Z Fold 5 😂. I was playing around with the Fold in the shop and I liked how the phone is slim when it's folded, how it feels in my hands, because I don't want a huge phone like the S23 Ultra, but you've made me think about how "unproductive" the slimmer screen is, I might end up waiting for the S24 plus
haha sorry about that! But ya, I will say the Fold 5 does feel smaller and easier to hold due to how narrow it is. But i'd personally go OnePlus Open if I had to pick between the two. S24 Plus should be awesome!
Might eventually hold out till the S24 comes out, hoping the rumours are true that it will be out earlier. I don't even have a foldable yet and I'm already paranoid of ruining the inside screen
@@MatthewMonizHey! To further this. I would really appreciate if you could let me know what video is like side by side with bit devices. I've been trying to find the dimensions online and am wondering if the same video played on UA-cam will look bigger or smaller on the oneplus open. Apparently it's longest edge isn't as big as samsungs. Therefore it's a bigger screen but for media consumption might actually display a smaller image? Would really appreciate the info! Thanks
I've had the Fold since the 3, and it's amazing. All of these brands can release what they want, but the Fold quality will always win. The Fold 6 is going to be the King as it'll have a new design which does increase the outside screen to be a normal size and will be mirrored to the design of the S24 Ultra. Look that up before buying anything, and I'd recommend waiting for that if you can.
@@MatthewMoniz HOW MUCH ONEPLUS PAID YOU? Samsung CHOSE to have the outer screen SMALLER so we can easily hold it, then IF we need a much bigger screen, just UNFOLD IT! It is super DUMB to have a big outside screen, even before you will open it, period.
But it's not Samsung. Samsung has better build quality and software support than any other android devices out there. In another review, MKBHD was showing dead pixels in the new Oneplus Open phone. Imagine you spent USD 1800 and found out that there are dead pixels. This is where the Samsung excels. their build quality is top-notch. Don't get me wrong, this is my opinion.
Well I mean Samsung did release a phone that blows up the note 7 so I wouldn’t say they have better build quality. But yes that’s very unfortunate mkbhd got a dead pixel already if that happens to mine I’ll defintely make a UA-cam short about it
I disagree with you saying that the Z Fold 5 is an inferior experience. The smaller cover display is more ergonomic and feels better in the hand, and it encourages you to use the inner display which is still better on the Samsung coupled with the software. The purpose of a foldable is to use the inner display. So, if you are more interested in a larger outer display, just go get yourself a regular smartphone, that's all I can say to all the UA-camrs who are very keen on the larger outer display aspect.
The purpose of a folding phone is not to just use the inner display. You might as well just carry an iPad with you instead of a phone. The whole point of a folding phone is to have a tablet to go with your phone. The outer screen is the phone that most people interact with on a daily basis to do phone things. The inner screen is the tablet that gets used when you need a bigger display for watching content, reading or multitasking. The Fold 5 is great but the front screen being so skinny is not great except for making the phone feel smaller to carry in your hand.
You're the type of person to make a bug sound like it's a feature lol, encourages to use the inner display... It saddens me there are humans with such horrible reasoning capabilities.
SAMSUNG is a MULTI BILLION COMPANY with THOUSANDS of employees all over the world that they also ASKED & SURVEYED before they launch any of their products. I know, because I worked with them for years, and they have an amazing people especially in South Korea. I bought the Z FOLD 5, even after I played around my brother Pixel Fold, and it DEFEATS THE PURPOSE of what FOLDABLE PHONES means. People still marvel when I open the Z FOLD 5, than when my brother open his Pixel Fold ( the same logic of OnePlus Open, that have wide outside screen). The people reaction when they see Z FOLD 5 (after you opened it) was inspiring, as it has smaller and compact front screen BUT when you open it becomes huge, but with Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open it’s like NOTHING CHANGE as the perception of the eyes that it is already BIG! It’s like when my wife open her FLIP 5, people still saying WOW, but if you will make the screen outside BIG, that wow factor will be gone, period.
@MatthewMoniz for sure. I will carry an iPad next time. To add to what I said earlier, I am an Honor V2 foldable user and while everyone raves about how thin and light and like a normal phone it is, I will tell you that the experience on Samsung is way better and I wish I had bought that instead of the Honor V2 foldable. Having just a wide aspect ratio isn't everything a foldable needs to have when the rest of the experience just falls off.
Currently using the OnePlus Open. Got a sweet deal through Amazon here in the US, and man it's such a good phone. Also the camera on this thing is sooo good.
Foldables are not my thing but it's nice to see more options for those who like them. Kind of surprising to see the OP shooting 4k video with the front facing camera.
I think the z fold 5 has a perfect front screen because it actually makes me wana open it seem like all other folds have a bigger screen n to seem i would never open it but thats my opinion
If that's actually true then you should never need any folding phone... if you can do what you would be doing easier on one single regular size screen... then why are you even looking at foldable phones?
As a Samsung fan, I agree with that the Folds cover display is probably the worst out of all of the foldables. If Samsung ever decides to change it up, I might consider buying a foldable cause I'm kinda stuck with Samsungs phones. I prefer One UI THAT much over any other android skin that I do not want to move away from their devices
I am going to trade my s23 ultra for this phone. This is a game changer with the outter display being wider and being able text better and better on the go. Hopefully samsung next year wont be lazy. 😂
I really appreciate how you show the phones and also having them side by side Matt. A lot of reviewers just show their faces 😂. Common you're not the subject here.
Lol you're welcome! But you'll be surprised how much better just showing your face does sometimes. There's a connection there that having no face doesn't provide. I think a good happy medium where it makes sense is the right way to do it.
The stylus connection option is there in the setup menu. The trouble is the stylus is available only in China. Check with the OPPO distributor whether they have bothered to import together or not. Cheers!
Zfold owner here (past 4 years), I actually think the software experience is better on the OP. I'd also feel comfortable saying OP undershoots their water resistance on all their phones, but you typically can submerge, someone should test this. As for the cameras, I really wish they would at least match the iphone 13 pro, I currently carry the zfold and the iphone 13 pro, mainly just because I don't like the cameras on the zfold...
People that complain about the fold 5 outer screen being too narrow have completely missed the point of a big foldable phone. When closed it's supposed to be perfectly one hand friendly, thin, narrow, feel like a small phone in your pocket, use for quick stuff while you are walking without worrying too much about having to grip it. When you need a bigger screen, you open the phone. And when you do that, you get a perfect productivity-focused aspect ratio. Perfect for browsing the web, for PDF reading and signing, etc. Having a big "normal" outer screen will just make it so that it is not one handable anymore, harder to grip while on the go, bigger in the pocket and when you open it you get a widescreen display: something that's less multitasking friendly and less work (PDF etc) friendly, and more entertainment focused. Even when you have them side by side in the video you can clearly see how much more compact and "small phone vibes" the Fold5 gives. And that's what makes it amazing: it's a huge screen that feels like a very small portable phone when closed. That's the magic of it. I don't want an S23 Ultra that opens to two S23 Ultras. I want a small pocketeable one handed compact phone that opens into a huge canvas + pen when needed. Seeing as all other brands are trying the "normal big two handed phone that can open up to get even bigger" idea I actually hope that Samsung sticks with their idea of a "work tablet that fits in your pocket and you can use it on the go as a very small and portable work machine. Big when you need it, super small when you don't". Also any phone that comes out without S-Pen or similar support is an instant skip for me. As an ex-Note user, S-Pen is a must for me.
I get what you mean however being narrow has its weaknesses. It's not just the factor of being narrow, but it also plays in the functionality. For example, aspect ratio and some app functionality. The borders that you get when watching a UA-cam video. It's a better form factor on the Open. So it's not entirely missing the point of having a normal out of display. There are reasons to have a normal outer display. Different people have different preferences, although it would be great to have pen support.
Before I bought the Z FOLD 5, I played around for days (PIXEL FOLD, that’s almost the same as OnePlus Open), and after 1 week I returned it to Best Buy and replaced it with FOLD 5. If I want a BIG FRONT DISPLAY, I will just buy the iPhone 15 Pro Max or Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or Pixel 8 Pro. It’s super DUMB to have a HUGE OUTER SCREEN for a FOLDABLE, as it defeats the PURPOSE of it, It’s like a FLIP 5 with BIG SCREEN, so why we have to buy those, if we still looking for BIG SLAB PHONE?!?
@@cliffm8846 OK hear me out, for the most part, The Pixel Fold and One Plus Open are different in certain ways. Watch Mr. Whosetheboss's video to see my point on why it makes more sense. The point of the larger outside display is to not have compromises. Having a big outside display should not defeat the purpose of the larger display. As long as the inside is bigger than the outside. The purpose of it is to have and utilize the large inside display you can not do the same things on the outside similar to a normal slab phone as you can on the larger inside as long as the weight is down. If I'm not mistaken, it weighs less than the Fold 5. It should be fine, the only thing I would consider at this point is to add pen support same pen as the One Plus tablet. People want a device that does not compromise the outside, or the aspect ratio and does not hinder the weight because this is still the weight of a premium slab phone which is great. I think One Plus is on track as long as they polish the software.

The problem with any other Android phone which is not Samsung is that Samsung is the only one putting alot of features and competing with iOS . For example copying text from photos not using Google photos is only there in Samsung.
for all android phones, with built in google assistant, you can simply pull the assistant up from the bottom and push "select text" for any screen. No need for google photos, it works in any apps.
Just bought the One Plus. The 3 disadvantages you speak of: No wireless charging. No IP8. Big camera bump. These are not important to me. Wireless charging is inefficient. Plus it runs the battery hot. IP8? Don't care. Don't plan to drop this in water. I've only dropped one phone in water in my life (down the toilet). But I've had it in the rain a few times. So if this can handle that? I'm good. Lastly, the camera bump won't affect it. I will never put this thing on the table and then use it. Why would you do that? I will always use it in my hand. So the bump is irrelevant.
I always enjoy how objective your reviews are (and thanks for including call quality!). I really like that OnePlus Open, and if I were in the market for a foldable it would be my choice (even with the lack of Dex support). That is, until you review an even better foldable next week. 😁
I have zfold 5 3 weeks now, it's a great phone. I have small palm, made it one of the best phone for 1 hand typing. I hate that rounded weird camera on One+, they should have align the camera location straightly.
Z fold 5 design is still the best. The outer screen is on point. You can use it with one hand, unlike any other fold phone. Yes, it's narrow, but you'll get the use of it.
I found it terrible and suspect if Samsung had a display like the OnePlus, it would have sold 2-3X more Fold 5s. But for financial reasons, they decided to keep narrow, which is the only fold like that. They can rely on hardcore Samsung fans to stay loyal. When the Fold 6 arrives with the wider display, and you try it, you will quickly realise how bad Samsung's design was.
I've had samsungs since the late 90s early 2000s always was a note series then ultra had the fold 2 hated the front screen, broke it and never looked back was waiting to see what oneplus did and I happily am jumping ship already pre-ordered should be here by the end of the month can't wait!!
Great review/comparison. I agree; the main reason I ditched the Galaxy Fold 4 was the aspect ratio of the front display. Otherwise, it was above average, though still handicapped by not having premium cameras and also the relatively small battery. The front display was a major deal-breaker. I can live with 60Hz or 1080p, but that front aspect ratio sucked beyond any known sucking thing. I hoped the Fold 5 would rectify that design flaw, but Samsung went one more year with that design. Every other fold has a better front display, so the Fold 5 is last for me. The OnePlus went to number one for us in the West.
Great review, but every reviewer that I found seems to neglect the one big question when it comes to foldables: Repair experience. Does the One Plus Open have an sceen protector on the big screen? Both my fold 3 and fold 4 had that peeling off after 1 year of usage, and Samsung replaced it both times for FREE. They even replaced the entire screen and hinge because of apparently "hinge failure". Don't get me wrong, I've heard horror stories of customer support with Samsung, but so far my experience has been great. While the one plus open is tempting, I have no idea what their customer service is like or how this 1st generation device will hold up. Hope it does well though! Maybe gen 2 or 3 for me in a few years
Thanks! i agree the support aspect is always important but unfortunately these reviews go up to quick for long term feedback. I will be using this long term and will report if I have any issues. The OnePlus OPen does have a screen protector for the bigger screen but not the front one.
6:31 you can see that the crease in oneplus open is just spread out wider then reduce the depth. While ethe Fold 5 has a narrower crease but deeper. I prefer the cleanliness of narrow crease but less deep crease is better for touch and reflection
Yeah the Samsung front screen is not as big but all in all i would rather have the fold 5 then the one plus. Also one plus used Oppo's foldable it's not really a first gen product from one plus by any means
I don't understand the hate with the small front screen. The one handed operation is a huge feature. When you want a big screen then you can open it. This is from and function. If you put a big screen up front then it becomes a two handed operating screen - then you unfold it for a bigger 2 handed operating screen. It's redundant. I seriously hated balancing my S21Ultra on my pinky while I try to tap things at the top or the left side of that phone with one hand.
Oneplus have taken a third generation phone from their sister company and made it their own and as such I would hope that the lack of development cost would have reflected in the price and it doesn't.
The reason it is thinner is the lack of wireless charging (the coil adds quite some thickness and weight). It also is not water proof and does not have s-pen support (at least not the wacom thing Samsung has). That also makes the weight less. The additional brighness and bigger screen will impact the battery (thus a bigger battery). I really like the form factor, however lacking wireless charging on such an expensive phone for me is strange. Finally all the comments on the under display camera of the Samsung. This camera is not intended to make picture (you have 4 others), only for a conference call. I think the reasoning is that you will use your internal screen more often for content than having calls, thus hide the camera for most use cases sounds logical. So, hopefully Samsung will make a folding phone with the form factor of the Oneplus or the Pixel. Let's see!
yes, the lack of wireless charging is so STRANGE when it charges from 0-100% in 40min. I see you'd prefer saving yourself the 1-2 seconds of plugging in so you can get a 20% charge in 3 hours instead
I got the one plus open recently. got disappointed by single core performance and html5 performance, I majorly use my phone for chrome. I was shocked to see latest snapdragon 8 gen 2 perform worse than my 2.5 year old s21 ultra. I should have bought fold 5. :(
Your first line is correct. Samsung Z fold should be what one plus fold offers. Yet no one is bashing Samsung for that. But everyone is bashing and saying Samsung is offering fingerprint, 200x zoom lense etc. Why Apple is not doing that? P.S : I am using a pixel 6, not an apple fanboy
Honestly for their First gen Foldable they got the basics right. Samsung is just Cost cutting by recycling same design since Fold 3 with minor tweaks and processor upgrade. I want Oneplus Open to Succeed so Samsung feels some push. They got that arrogance of unbeatable since the first Generation Fold.
If i needed normal screen upfront...there are many options. The slim size of fold05 is what sold me, got best of both worlds big and small. Fold 5 is clear winner for me.
As a long time Fold user I keep thinking how much the S pen factor is suddenly avoided when comparing devices......in this department, Samsung has NO match and at least for me, that is one of the most enjoyable features of the phone!
The fact that only 0.1% of smartphone sales are for phones with a stylus suggests that, for the vast majority, no one cares. Obviously, like you, there will be hardcore S-pen users, but even I have an S23U and never touch the S-pen and would prefer a larger battery instead.
I'm sure Samsung will get out of their comfort zone and catch up with OnePlus. Love the OnePlus, but no wireless charge and not being waterproof is a HUGE downside for me, and had no other choice but to wait ti see the improvement on either Z Fold 6 or OnePlus Open 2.
It's typical of oneplus not to provide the highest water resistance rating, yet to achieve it unofficially. They've done this with past phones, tldr It's likely you can submerge the OP Open, I'm sure some youtubers will test it.
What people miss out is if one wanted to use slab phone then just buy that. Biggest advantage of Samsung design os that its narrow so easy to hold such heavy phone and store in jeans pocket. Has anyone noticed how difficulty it is to use broad heavy slab phone. I am using fold 3 and since its easy to hold with narrow body I dont even use any cover but with any slab phone its so diffocult to hold broad phone one needs to use cover as phone keeps slipping. So one plus is awesome but considering I find holding broad phone difficult to use with single hand hence going to stick with Fold 3. Finally not everyone has big hands so fold is just perfect for both single hand (closed) and two hand use ( open). I am surprised reviewers do not understand how everyone do not have big phones hence fold is a sweet spot for all types of folks.
The OnePlus Open is too good and exactly what I've been waiting for in a foldable phone. What do you guys think?
No wireless charge & maybe no spen support🤧
Does it have HDMI or video out at least?
@AlexRubio should have video out because of usb c 3.1 port
@@modestman6753 I personally don't care about the spen but I do want wireless charging!
@@modestman6753 I hope so at least I can play my emulators in my screen unlike the OnePlus 11 which didn't have that.
So true about front screen
True 💯 add on the software and features
100% true. I use the cover screen alot but I also find myself not even using my other phone cause I love the slim screen. I hope samsung doesn't change it.
I'm glad others share the same opinion that I do about the fold 5.
I appreciate fold'5s narrow screen.. your value is what speaks to you.. Samsungs my brand
What did you notice that one plus fold is better than fold5 ?
How's your experience so far? I just ordered the Open to replace my ZFold4.
@GCharlesE how do you like your OnePlus compared to the Fold 4? I'm thinking about doing the same with the new discount on the OnePus.
OnePlus came out swing hard with this fold. I'm actually going to order one next week. They won me over this time and I'm very impressed
You'll love it, it's badass
How are you liking it?
@@ancientslav4863 "s24 ultra fold" huh? Regular size front screen? Heh. We are yet to see it, but the leaks show nothing has changed.
you should have shown off the multitasking feature more, it'd be the stand out feature of the device as it's quite unique and creative
I enjoy my samsung fold for 3 reasons, software, ecosystem, and size. The UI is just packed full of useful features, the Samsung ecosystem is the closest i can get to the Apple ecosystem and the more narrow outer screen is what i prefer.
@hellsfavoritesaltyberserke4724
Says someone who never used a Samsung fold
Buddy i moved from fold 3 to 4 and now 5 and this phone has absolutely no comparison
@hellsfavoritesaltyberserke4724incorrect. One UI is innovative
I like that the outer screen mimics inner screen. Its easier on muscle memory and quick peripheral vision to just go right to the click you want to make without thinking.
Ya thats true! I also notice I dont have to restart apps because of it.
thinking is hard for you huh?
Galaxy gives you a choice to mirror or not.
@@CastroJordan Exactly what I was going to say. Too bad Matt didn't know that for this comparison.
Galaxy handling of inner vs outter apps is ridiculous and not intuitive at all.
1:38 so much hate for the narrow outer screen of the Z Fold 5, but as someone who doesn't have large hands, it is a godsend compared to a lot of other devices. Coming from a pixel 6, I haven't been this excited for a phone since the HTC M7 with BoomSound speakers
Maybe that's why I really like this phone lol.
That's what i like about 1 plus. It's a happy medium
Ya its never bothered me either and I rather a proper camera then a 4MP one that doesn't take great video.
@@MatthewMoniz why do you need multiple cameras that do the same thing. I've taken interviews and more on the underscreen camera and everyone says they can see me fine, and I look way better than most people connecting with webcams and PCs. I forget its even there until I need to use it.
Love the privacy of OP7, wish all phones had hide away cameras.
@@CrunchyTire i mean theres a difference between people seeing you fine and you seeing the video how you want to

I had oneplus 5 once, and that was the best android phone i ever had. Switched to Samsung just because oneplus stopped their official release here.
You can say one plus has learned from samsung and the feedback from millions of users, hence their design improvements. One thing that favours Samsung is, its folds are tried and tested. The quality factor and reliability of the folds Is proven. I'm writing this on my Z fold 3.
How is Samsung’s support? Do you still get frequent updates for the fold 3?
so are these...bearing in mind oneplus is the european arm of OPPO who have been doing foldables for around 3-4 years
As a Z Fold 5 owner who came from a Note 20 Ultra 5G, let me say definitively that the smaller size of the phone when its folded and the smaller cover screen are both reasons to buy the phone and are NOT hindrances in anyway.
I came from, and still have, an S23 ultra and feel the same way. If I pick up the old phone it's shocking how I was able to use it for everything.
It ain't much to do with size as much as the aspect ratio. The oneplus feels like a regular phone folded than the Z fold 5 with the taller aspect ratio.
interesting I'm in the exact scenario with a Note 20 Ultra considering foldable. 🤔🤔🤔
If my goal is to use the outer display, I'll just buy a slab phone. I LOVE how compact the Fold5 is.
Fair point
I agree seems if i buy the one plus i wouldn't mind to open it because i would do everything in the outer display
@@Sesar707Very well said
Yep, tried pixel fold and realized I prefer the skinny profile
@joelo5164 Yeah; I don't understand all these people who want a regular slab phone on the outside so they never have to unfold their foldable. What's the point? 🤷♂️
Samsung views the Z Fold as a tablet that fits in your pocket, not a slab phone that turns into a tablet.
Buena comparativa!
What stand are you using at the end of the video 11:31? Thanks.
One plus open supports a stylus on the outside and inner screen now.
Im glad you were honest on the camera comparison.
I really like my Fold 5 and don't think i would give it up for the Open
Been using Sammys Fold since the 2, one thing i can say is if your liking the OnePlus, wait until the 2nd version......1st versions always seem to have bugs, the 2nd version of the Fold was so much better than the first.
Personally love the narrow front display. Just super convenient and comfortable to use. You want something huge… just open it. The only thing Samsung would have to do to perfect the fold would be to bring the Ultra cameras to it.
Same but then they'll wouldn't be no need to upgrade again
What they need is an ultra and FE version
Thanks for the review. I have a fold 4 and wanted to update to a 5 but it wasn't a big enough jump. After this review I'll wait til the fold 6

Which one do you suggest out of oneplus and z5
If there's anything I've learned over the years, is that the hardware is only as good as it's software. If OnePlus can refine their software a bit, i think it can be a better alternative to Samsung, but right now it looks like it'll be a "just ok" phone. We'll have to see.
Software has been great so far. Honestly the only thing that currently needs refinement is the camera
@MatthewMoniz Gotcha! Yeah, Samsung's camera's are pretty solid, I'm sure OnePlus will be able to pull through, especially considering the camera specs

Samsung software has more features but I don't think they are better optimized. Coming from S22 Ultra to the half price OnePlus 11. The software experience is definitely an upgrade.

Oneplus ditching wireless charging to make the phone thinner and lighter is definitely the right move. Is it really that hard to put a little bit more effort to just plug in the wired charger? Never understand why people need wireless charging.
Although better design but without Dex and S Pen I would still opt for my Fold 5. Game changer

They do that I wont buy the Folds anymore.
Make it a little wider and upgrade the cameras then it will be a game changer. PLZ give us the ultra camera specs!!
The honor magic vs2 looks to be the perfect foldable phone in my opinion, only drawback is having to wait for a global launch.
Is just the best
I have the one plus open and the honor magic v and I agree if honor had a global release I would buy it over any foldable
Definately Open is the leader and winner in foldable phone world
One plus one is the best foldable. U either buy it or not. Some phones do get faulty but that does not mean all the phones are faulty the same

I agree, the Fold is so comfortable to hold one handed, texting for example is so much easier to reach all the letters on the keyboard.
Agreeed!! It just feels so comfortable. I’d probably never really unfold it if I had one
At least for me, The fold 5 outside screen is perfect! And how it fits in the pocket... very very comfortable!
Awesome comparison. I learned that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 camera is as phenomenal as the OnePlus Open despite how the latter is marketed by having better sensors and colorimetry. Nonetheless, I gave the credit to OnePlus for how well designed the Open is.
software update will sort this, oneplus have already said one is being worked on...to improve the cameras
If Samsung doesn't fix up and make the Fold 6 have this samenform factor then im moving to OnePlus. Been waiting a long time for a folding phone with good Software. Samsung finally has competition.
I love the form factor of the z fold my personal opinion
I traded from fold 2 to 5 and disappointingly there's really not much difference. Feels like the same old phone. I love it, will never go back to a traditional phone but I'm really thinking about the Oppo because I hate the cover screen, it's pretty useless
I had enough experience with my previous Fold 4. I think this is the correct time for me to try another foldable phone. This Oneplus/Oppo came out at the right time, allowing me to adopt a new system.
How have you found it?
8:34 you forgot to mention the OnePlus Open has a new way to multitask / interact with multiple apps
I think the Samsung found a working formula so they are just trying to polish it. I don’t think they are lazy they just are focusing on the smaller things for a seamless experience
I disagree it’s not workable it’s actually the #1 reason most people trade it ASAP
There is only one problem people have with z fold. People want to 19:9 aspect ratio cover display.
@katinasoutherland7693 well I daily a fold 5 coming from an iPhone 13pro and I can tell the front screen size is perfect.
Hi. Can the oneplus open be used with an external display like a dex for samsung? Thanks!
No
I don't think Samsung is lazy - they are just playing it safe including tried and tested hinge and screen technology. Of course I think they should be more innovative but at the same time I appreciate that I see on online auctions 2-3 year old Z Folds 2 & 3 for 600 usd and they still work very well and are not broken :)
their latest hinge is new...it got changed from fold 4 to 5
OnePlus just single-handedly improved the foldable category overall. That is one great piece of tech there!

HOW MUCH ONEPLUS PAID YOU?
@@MatthewMonizIt is to make a compact "ipad"
It was never truly my thing either. I used the fOld for awhile but the cover display ruined it for me. The OnePlus Open changes that.
Oneplus/Oppo have done an amazing job with this one, and not skimping on the camera like Samsung for instance really does
I think the z fold 5 has a perfect front screen because it actually makes me wana open it seem like all other folds have a bigger screen n to seem i would never open it but thats my opinion
If that's actually true then you should never need any folding phone... if you can do what you would be doing easier on one single regular size screen... then why are you even looking at foldable phones?
I'm annoyed by that narrow screen on the Fold, but love the One Ui. If there was OnePlus Open on OneUi I would buy one
💯
But the lack of wireless charging is a deal breaker
@@cooliipie why? 80w fast charging is superb as a compromise
After your review on oneplus open, it's the phone for me. And I'm coming from Samsung ultra 20.
I am going to trade my s23 ultra for this phone. This is a game changer with the outter display being wider and being able text better and better on the go. Hopefully samsung next year wont be lazy. 😂
Lol I'm sure they'll make it wider next year. They would be nuts not too
They are lazy and seling old hardware to their custommers. Old cameras. No changes. I hate samsung. Micro sd card slot should be in everyone
Whats the point making the outer screen bigger? Might as well buy a normal phone
@@irdibasha391 what's the point? What's the point of having a phone if it doesn't have a camera. We shouldnt desire to have innovating new tech 👊🏻
The Open is soooo dope. such a good phone
I had the fold and i hated how chunky and small outside screen... Ure right on. Oneplus nailed it in all categories
Maybe it would make more sense to invest in a camera than an extra phone in that case.
@SsSoutlaw4SsS a camera is big compared to an iphone, but maybe
It’s super DUMB to have a HUGE OUTER SCREEN for a FOLDABLE, as it defeats the PURPOSE of it,
It’s like a FLIP 5 with BIG SCREEN, so why we have to buy those, if we still looking for BIG SLAB PHONE?!?
@@micahjohnson9184
All those UA-camrs, especially those outside USA was PAID FOR by OnePlus, that’s why they have almost the same SCRIPTS.
And IF you have the Pixel Fold (and I do), it has almost the same way the OnePlus Open did to their outside screen hat DEFEATS THE PURPOSE of FOLDING PHONES.
ALL REGULAR USERS (like normal people, not those tech nerds and UA-camrs) wants a FOLD & FLIP phones that are SMALL when FOLDED and only big when you UNFOLDED/OPEN them.
SAMSUNG is a CONGLOMERATE that almost own the whole country of South Korea and have hundreds of thousands employees around the world, so whatever me and you thinking they ALREADY KNOW, but they already SURVEYED MAJORITY of people in this planet, by getting the DATA from stores, wireless carriers, etc………….. to what MOST people wants from a phone (not the 1% tech nerds), period.
@@micahjohnson9184
You said it WEIGH LESS, but it’s BULKY inside your pants/shorts, and again, that DEFEATS THE PURPOSE of what they want to ACHIEVE.
SAMSUNG know the MARKET more than ANY UA-camrs or Tech nerds, as they have LIVE DATA from stores, wireless carrier, etc…………. that sells phones, tablets, laptops, etc….. every day.
(We can have our OPINION, but they have FACTS)
The lack of wireless charging is a deal breaker for me. I use my phone daily on my magnetic car mount
OnePlus fold seems to be the best foldable out there.
100%
Thanks Bryan I appreciate it! haha no foldables next week but lots more next year.
Its full of opinions that most folding fans would disagree with. but ok.
OBJECTIVE?
He was PAID FOR by ONEPLUS, like most UA-camr that were reviewing it now, period.
@amfrepo nah don't choke. Accept the fact. One Plus what? Lol
@@powgee22what fact idiot?
if you find the op open too wide for one hand use then none of the flagship slab phone works for you. when folded it is the same as an iphone pro.
@qilu2004 That's the review of how exactly it was. But these paid tech reviews are insane lol
I've had samsungs since the late 90s early 2000s always was a note series then ultra had the fold 2 hated the front screen, broke it and never looked back was waiting to see what oneplus did and I happily am jumping ship already pre-ordered should be here by the end of the month can't wait!!
excellent review. wondering where is your phone stand from?
Nice joke 😂😅😂
The OnePlus OPen does have a screen protector for the bigger screen but not the front one.
all these tech influencers ranting and raving about this phone still won't use it at their daily driver 💀
Except Mr. Mobile
They all got their bags
6:31 you can see that the crease in oneplus open is just spread out wider then reduce the depth. While ethe Fold 5 has a narrower crease but deeper. I prefer the cleanliness of narrow crease but less deep crease is better for touch and reflection
Yeah the Samsung front screen is not as big but all in all i would rather have the fold 5 then the one plus. Also one plus used Oppo's foldable it's not really a first gen product from one plus by any means
Yup its more like their 3rd since its an OPPO design
Are you able to compare it to the Honor Magic V2? Software questions aside, it looks even better. The OnePlus is much thicker. Thanks.
I dont have a honor v2 here to compare it too they don't sell it here in Canada unfortunately
Yeah they say it's the best foldable out there, but reaches the market in 2024 for many countries like UK and Europe
Personally i like the skinnier display of the galaxy, feels more one handable
Until u try to type not to mention watching video looks silly
It's meant for one handed use. Unless you have the biggest hands you can type on the outer display.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is Killer & Incredible.💪😎😍❤💙💜💚❤
Oneplus have taken a third generation phone from their sister company and made it their own and as such I would hope that the lack of development cost would have reflected in the price and it doesn't.
OnePlus has superior split screen multitasking over the Samsung! That means Samsung's software advantage is OvEr!
Samsung is more stable less buggy
I was going to consider buying a Oneplus Open until I saw there were only one color option for a glass finish, which is the green shown here.
the original vs copy cat 😅
Let's see!
Great point
yes, the lack of wireless charging is so STRANGE when it charges from 0-100% in 40min.
You pointed out everything I was thinking off in regards to the OnePlus, great video
My boy MM always bringing great reviews with that Canadian touch....great work. Put my pre-order in for the Open this moring.
Thanks man I appreciate it!
If i needed normal screen upfront...there are many options. The slim size of fold05 is what sold me, got best of both worlds big and small. Fold 5 is clear winner for me.
I’m thinking when Samsung refreshes their foldable, they’ll make it wider with an S pen sliding in
As a long time Fold user I keep thinking how much the S pen factor is suddenly avoided when comparing devices......in this department, Samsung has NO match and at least for me, that is one of the most enjoyable features of the phone!
