Wow... I'm a drop D kind of guy. I watched others cover and teach this song, and I like them. However, this one I love!
I saw you. I saw a gut string guitar and thought, this isn't for me. But, you totally nailed it! And, this is absolutely up my alley.
For no reason, except we are on the subject of Drop D, I love these songs:
"Don't Let The Old Man In", "Forever Young", "Into The Mystic", and... a bunch of others I can't seem to remember because it is after midnight. LOL.

I know i might be a late to the party but great cover man. I have been playing for around 12 to 13 years. I am currently recovering from a broken hand and its just getting to where i can play without to much pain. I have always wanted to learn this song but never got around to it until i saw your cover video of it (which was awesome btw). I saw this lesson in the recommended and decided wth ill give it a shot. This is great. When I do it, or try however, everything I do becomes/sounds so basic. I feel like, and often am, just strumming one string with a very basic rendition of the song. Been trying for years to at least become a half decent player, but afraid I just don't have "it". Still loved this tutorial.
Bit by bit, brother. Try things that you are new to, constantly. And, don't give up! I've been playing all my life, and I've still to learn so much! If I can do it, so can you. Never be satisfied with the result, but always adjust and continue. Every minute makes you stronger and more able. Keep rockin!

I just started. Learning open cords. How many years do I need to practice to get to ability to play this?
Strumming is intense here. I am not sure how to mute the 4th and not to mute 3rd…
Practice, brother. Patience and practice. If you are just starting, dynamics will take quite a while to get right.

When you are going for the chord change, pull of the chord quickly but note by note. Adds an extra rhythmic triplet kind of feel! :)

Wow, this is great. I think I might actually be able to do this! You play so well. Love the tone of your HUGE guitar. (Nylon string!!!) And watching you makes me realize I need to loosen my wrist. My right hand is way too rigid. This is gonna be a challenge, but definitely do-able.

4:39 To get the "tsk" sound do you palm mute everytime with your rhythm hand?
TheMolecule Man hi! The stroke must be muted at the same time as it comes down with the part of your hand closest to your thumb.
Thanks for explaining. I never quite understood how clean it sounds with some guitar players (such as you, you're exceptional good at it) and it's hard to see when someone is playing. I've never been able to do it, well guess the key to it is practice then :-)

Of course you did mention to your viewers that the song is actually in D flat? They(Collective Soul) do that funny drop "D" tuning but they play a D flat, B , F#

Of course! I did my original cover in Db.
The tuning on the tutorial has been modified for the benefit of those most, who use standard tuning. I mostly do everything in Eb tuning XD
