I play bass on this song in my band--it's a great song. I play guitar too, and this is a solo that's within my abilities. I think this'll inspire me to learn it!
Thanks for this. We are playing this in our upcoming gig in November. On that 2nd lick I found it extremely useful when learning the scale climb pattern to completely keep the picking out all together and just get the pattern down with the fretting hand making sure to really hammer down and pull off THEN later add the picking hand. With the amp cranked you can pretty much play the whole solo without a pick.😂. But it is so much easier to learn it with only the fretting hand.
Also by doing this I caught an error I was making early on right after the chromatic lick that was causing me to be off for the rest of the solo which was perplexing me until I figured out which note I was hitting wrong. By doing it this way (fretting hand only) I was easily able to identify where I fell off the train tracks. Very important to get that run on the A string down correctly then the rest falls into place.
👍👍❤️❤️🎸🎸Thank you for this Kelly Dean! This is such a great ,great song. Your back in fine form I see! And (Hear) -This is a song I’ve been wanting to learn if -I can ever pull myself away from all your awesome David Gilmour lessons!
awesome stuff man. that descending lick is a hardsection to get up to speed the ascending part is driving me bonkers instead of hammering on that one note my hand wants to pick it thanks this will be fun to get up to speed I usually play whatever in that pentatonic scale when faking it through this solo thanks again
Yezzzzz! After I saw your shorts few weeks ago, I've been trying to learn this. Been a dream of mine over 20 years ago. Lol So hard to get to speed that pentatonic sequence and the tapping.
Hint: initially do NOT use your picking hand. Crank the amp and get the pattern down with just the fretting hand with hammer on and pull offs. Once it is drilled into muscle memory then add the coordination of your right picking hand.
Curious why you're doing this in this tuning.. isn't the studio version drop d? We actually played it with one guitar drop d and the other standard because we heard somewhere a million years ago Collective Soul may have done it that way 🤷♂️
To be fair, Collective Soul had some seriously nasty riffs, and Childress delivered a whole bunch of face-melters. He may have been a wife-stealing douche, but damn if he didn't know his way around a guitar lick.

learning this one for a gig today wtf this solo is so intimidating thanks for breaking it down! that 2nd lick wooof
We gotta know how the gig went! did you crush the solo?
man i cant even remember but chances are i did NOT hahahaha@@cooperwilde8107
Awesome tutorial! I think the hardest part for me is the last part of the solo nailing those pull offs on then14, 13, and 12 of the g string.

That Pentatonic run is super quick and tricky.

It's such a good solo man
Great thanks
Kelly DEAN MACHINE Allen !
Great lesson, can you teach us the solo from Heavy by Them?
Thanks so much for this post! How did you get that tone?
What effects pedal did you use?
I use bias FX2 software pretty much for every cover I do. Can't remember what my settings were here however.
haven't heard of Group nor song before, BUT your rendition of the solo is very good and convincing.....nice....cheers....might give it a go.
you live under a rock?
Collective Soul has a lot of great songs. I've messed around with this song, but the solo always stopped me cold!
Great lesson!!!

Hi, is that a Mexican Stratocaster? or a Custom shop?
Canadian made Godin.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar Thank you.
Never tune down in tutorials! Those of us with floating bridges just scroll on... as I'm about to do.😂
Yeah so I play in standard as well. All I did was just follow where he was and play it at separately.
@@timothydevoll12 Me too but just super irritating overall 😎
I use transcribe+ and adjust the video up one half semitone. You just have to exercise your brain once in a while.

Yes. The studio version is in drop D, however the solo isn't.
Whaaa??? You have a 24 fret strat!! Please tell me that is a custom
It's a 24 fret Canadian made Godin. Lovely guitar.
