  • I really think this is the best scene in the "children of dune" series. why is it that we have the best conversation with our grandmothers? frank herbert is without a doubt in my mind, a kind of legend. he wrote this scene, and james mcavoy did a superb job. it reaches out to me on a personal level, reminds me of conversations with my grandmother. look at the colours... golden light, the golden path: but there also are shadows. yin and yang...

A kid couldn't really pull that kind of thing off. Also when Ghani talks about whose blood she wants to see spilled on the wedding sheets.. well, it would be kind of cringe-worthy if a child would say those things. I"m glad they "aged up" the twins.. it made them less "oddities" or "precocious pre-borns" and more human; downplaying their "genetic inheritance' and elevating their other qualities.. Leto's insight and Ghani's empathy and compassion.

He clearly is the one in power in this situation.

    A lot praise in this scene for how McAvoy handles his part, but I want to praise Krige for being able to showcase Jessica in this. Jessica comes in expecting to deal with a child's mind, something she should be able to easily pry into. But in mere moments she goes from confident to terrified that all her abilities are little better than an insects compared to what this "child" in front of her is capable of. When he reads through her to see that she see her Duke in him, to him laughing at her effort to use the Voice on him, to his using the Voice on her shutting her down and locking her in place even though he's not really putting anything into the Voice.

    I love this scene. McAvoy at his subtlest and best acting. Also the dialogue is great and James plays the role of the precocious teenager winning verbal exchange after verbal exchange with his Bene Gezarit grandmother to perfection. I don't know which line/acting I like best. I just love for example when he tells her that he reminds her of Leto, his namesake and her beloved Duke... and how talking about it will lead them down a line of intimacy which will make them both feel uncomfortable. I also love how subtle is McAvoy when she tries to use the voice on him and how mature is his responds when he tells her "it is possible, but is it desirable? I have some difficult decisions to make, Grandmother." I also love the ending... Lady Jessica still thinks that she has the upper hand and tells him "I can help you." I just love his response, along with him choosing to use the voice "on the contrary, Grandmother. It is I who can help you." Just brilliant dialogue and brilliant acting. Rebecca Ferguson is great here, but James steals to show.

    Watching this scene as I begin to understand Dune lore more and more always fascinates me.
    We learn here that Leto II is much more powerful than everyone who has came before him. Paul, Jessica, Leto - They were needed to push Leto II to this position of power and he understands that. He doesn't take this opportunity as a gift for him to use, but rather a privilege - since he knows that he is unlike anyone who will ever exist. At this stage of power, he knows he can get whatever he wants whenever he wants, hell he can even see it himself eventually happening. But here he's asking the question, "what is better for humanity?"
    He can be a good leader, an Emperor which only provides for their people and lives for them. But he sees this outcome, and while it is comfortable, it isn't long nor prosperous. He can choose the path that Paul abandoned, a way into history that will make him dominate the Known Universe with an iron fist for a people which despise his hand, but humanity will continue. He can become more powerful than any being before and after him, but he needs to change himself completely into something almost monstrous.
    It's once again the issue that Paul had upon his arrival to Arrakis. Lose greater power which saves lives but ultimately leads humanity into a dead-end, or gain power at the cost of lives for humanity to preserve itself.

    I think Herbert was drawing on powerful experiences of his own with certain archetypes, and that he used fiction as a container or space in which to safely explore them. He was engaged in what Jung called active imagination.

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 4 роки тому +12

      Well, he was also exploring certain ideas that were popular at the time. For example, the idea of genetic ancestral memory, which is seen as fringe today, was actually being treated seriously by some people in the 60's and 70's.

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 2 роки тому +13

      @Curiouser11 - You're forgetting one small, crucial detail: we do *not* carry the genes of *all* our ancestors. Only 1/4 of your genes come from each of your grandparents, 1/8 from great-parents, 1/16 for great-great grandparents, etc....
      Thus, the amount of genetic information that you have from ancestors reduces each generation back that you go. Eventually, you will have little or nothing carried over directly from distant ancestors.
      Not that Herbert was ever very consistent on this topic anyway. For example, he frequently forgot, in his own explanation of genetic ancestral memory, that no further genetic exchange takes place after conception. So, just as an example, the ego-memory of Baron Harkonnen that possessed Alia should have been of a younger Baron with no recollection of what he had done in the decades after conceiving Jessica.
