Alia's ashes water was spread in the sand because she was an abomination, she was possessed. NOrmally Fremen would distill her water from her body and then it would be added to the seitch's water to strengthen and nourish the tribe. Spreading her water in the sand was not an act of honor but because she was possessed by her past lives, particularly her grandfather Baron Harkonnen; her water was tainted and unsafe for the tribe.

One minor correction... Spreading Alia's water among the sand was not the Fremen equivalent of spreading someone's ashes. Alia had become "abomination" and her water was deemed unclean and had to be discarded in the desert rather than reclaimed. A Fremen's water belongs to the tribe but her water was given to the sands.
    Very nice summary! Thanks!

@@johno1544 the books described him as about 10 meters long and 3.5 meters high if I recall correctly.
So my image was essentially a giant sand worm like we knew, but instead of the gaping maw with the three fold mouth you had a human face in the center
      Tiny
And somewhat impossible if you think about how the creature would eat
It was a long tube with round ends and on one end you streched a human face on that tube
Only mouth, eyes and 2 slits for the nose because the face was streched on to the tube
And then you add the crippled limbs on to that similar to how a walrus looks
      Flat
      At a sharp angle
      Decrepit
Feet elongated and close to the actual body
Hands still at the front in touch rsnge because the book describes him doing hand training exercises and I feel like that involves touching one hand with another
As a whole imagine you put a staw into a human and blew him up until he is about to burst i guess
      Decidedly non human
      Decidedly ugly
      Decidedly Lager than life
Most depictions i saw were of essentially medusa versions
Either a long worm body with a human upper body
Sometimes the head protruded like a pimpel on a worm bending his body like a snake would;upwards and forwards
I never saw a depiction that showed him Lager then a human in diameter
He usually had arms and no feet.
      And I dont know
I feel like my mental image is stronger then pictures
But i dont think I will be able to ignore a 2+ hour movie showing him in most likely human dimensions
Most likley a normal human head grafted to a small and tiny worm.
I prefer him a monstrosity barely human enough to be recognized as a former human if you want to believe it badly enough.
The golden path visually would be cool yeah, but i would also assume the same goes for that, i imagine you have a strong mental image and I wouldn't know how to fairly visualize a concept such as infinite numbers of possible futures where you cut away infinities every second with everything you do or dont do.
Also im afraid they might just take a graphic with vague pictures of possible futures and show them in a branching tree with golden connections, some of them golden like a research tree in a video game with some research beeing 'recommended' .
It could be amazing to see
      Or trivialize the concept entirely
Like for example the mini series did with the weirding ways turning into a blur of 'im so fast you cant touch me' .

A female army openly accepting lesbiens
A future without computers, came up with in a time where computers had effectively no real future telegraphed.
In addition to that technology that both seems plausible but still unobtainable
And seeing problems in space travel that we still struggle with.
He was sooo far beyond his time
And managed to deliver his message greatly without seeming on the nose about it.
      Dont trust charismatic leaders
      Power consolidates power

Also in DM & CoD, Chani was being given contraceptives by Irulan, which Paul knows about and allows by inactivity : this is due to him having foreseen Chani's death after birthing Ghanima (Leto II is not in his father's prescient vision)- so Chani goes along without having children for quite a while (yet wanting them badly) because Paul is afraid of losing her. In a bout of tragic irony, she died after the Twin's births because her body had become so weakened from the contraceptives which Irulan had given her and Paul had "allowed" her to ingest; if he had only stopped Irulan, Chani's death could have believably been prevented. Sigh. We can see the future, but not all of the paths that led to that future.

In his dark side adled rage hurts his wife to the point that he injures her fatally (she probably sustained an injury from that Force Choke, nevermind she dies of losing the will to live). the children of dune miniseries is actually the sequel to the dune miniseries syfy released in 2000. it was probably the best adaptation of the book until the new one. the 1984 version is something else altogether. they had to make so many sacrifices from the source material to get that one out. great movie in its own right just not really dune.

Any real fan of The Dune Universe needs to listen to the audiobooks. Frank Herbert left detailed notes on EVERYTHING, and the production of the audiobooks took time and effort to pronounce people and place names the way they were intended.
This may sound trivial but there are a lot of words in the books that dont have a standard English equivalent.
Thats part of the beauty of Herberts creation, the details.
For instance...no one in any of the books refers to "baby sandworms". Its because they have a name. Sandtrout.
And pouring Alia's water on the sand is nothing at all like scattering someones ashes. She was an Abomination.
Under normal circumstances the persons water belonged to the tribe. A person's water dosen't just refer to whats in their canteen, but to the water in their body. At death, a body would be taken to a place where the water is removed and tokens for the amount given to the immediate family or the winner of the fight depending on circumstances.
Because Alia was an Abomination, even her water was tainted spiritually and was poured on the open sand for the sand and little Makers to cleanse. (Another name for Sandtrout).
And another thing... Abomination wasn't a mental breakdown. Mental breakdown was a symptom.
Bene Gesserit Reverend Mothers and some others who had gone through the Spice Trance had "Other Memory" in which real conversations and knowledge could be passed to the person from their Lineage. Paul and Leto II were special because they were the only Men who had ever lived through it.
Alia was an Abomination because she became a Revered Mother in utero, because Lady Jessica was pregnant and didn't know what was about to happen.
Alia was a weird child because she was basically a mature woman inside. Eventually one of her ancestors drove her insane and had "possessed" her.
The Dune Universe is full and rich with detail and character. LOTR with all its beauty and depth, is a bedtime story in comparison.

Susan Sarandon. Worst casting in the miniseries. I forgave the aging of the twins, although it did make their abilities less dramatic IMO, because making them closer to adults made it easier to tell the story. But casting Sarandon as the YOUNGER sister to Princess Irulan was just HORRIBLE, just a wrong wrong choice. It's too bad they weren't able to cast Saskia Reeves as Lady Jessica again; I think she was an excellent choice in the Dune miniseries.
    1. Jessica was not Leto's wife, she was his concubine, just like Chani is Paul's. A child from a concubine is legally acknowledged and can inherit as long as there is no child born from a legal marriage(and Paul swore he'd never sleep with Irulan so that would never happen). This is one reason why Leto never married, the other was because keeping his options open to marriage made it easier to deal with other Great Houses in the LANDSRAAD.
    2. The original Lynch version did have Paul mentioning to his mother that she was the daughter of Baron Harkonnen. It was literally mentioned in passing, although the later extended cuts of the movie gives a little more info. The Dune miniseries focused on that fact a bit more.

My favorite part of the TV miniseries version of Dune shown throughout this video was the scene where Paul becomes Mua Dibe through a kaleidoscopic special effects sequence that was supposed to represent his spirit journey culminating in perfect spiritual enlightenment.
It was made even better a few years later when the exact same special effects sequence was used in the movie Southland Tales when the character played by the guy who played Stiffler in American Pie also achieved perfect spiritual enlightenment and became one with the universe. He then turned to his buddy sitting with him in a tricked out pickup truck after they used the truck and a chain to rip an ATM out of a bank wall. He said, after ascending to a higher state of consciousness and achieving spiritual enlightenment, "We're taking the ATM with us to Mexico."

I have watched them both dozens of times over the years and they are my go to sci fi watches over all these years. The acting and story are top notch from start to finish and todays movie may look better but it lacked the depth the scifi channel series had and as pleasant to the eyes the new movie may be, it is long but is hurried the entire time and they try to get so much in, they leave so much out and IMO the new movie has not done Dune proper justice at all.
